Has Spring Finally Arrived? As the weather starts to change and the snow melts it is a clear sign we are getting really close to our busy season. e board is very busy planning all the up coming events with our 9th An-nual Banquet, Boat & Sportsmen show, Sensory Safari, Sport-ing Clay Shoot to name a few. We have a fantastic group and we are always looking to our members to volunteer a couple hours here and there to be a part of the banquet committee or work a shift at the sportsmen show and you will never feel more rewarded then helping a visually impaired person through our ex-hibit at our sensory safari. If you can spare some time to help out please contact one of the board members or a chair person. With that I would like to welcome Val-erio Sansano to our board. Val has accepted the vacant position as our 11th member and will be re-sponsible for our newsletter going forward. is will free up George Belter to do even more work. Ha Ha! It is now March and I am fi nally recovering from the Reno convention. e show was amaz-ing and even though I was busy in meetings like the Canadian com-mittee meetings or the AGM one thing kept coming out from people in the SCI world. What a great chapter the Northern Alberta Chapter has! is makes me extremely proud and should make you as well! Hear are some things for you to consider the NAC has the largest chap-ter outside the

USA. Internationally our chapter has contributed the largest amount to conservation, education and humanitarian projects to SCI again this year. Our membership grew more than 151 new members last year. We received recognition on our Hu-manitarian project such as “Blue Bag” and “Sensory Safari”. On a side note it was announced in Reno that SCI just hit a huge mile stone and exceeded 300 million dollars in funded conservation projects world wide. WOW! A funny thing hap-

pened when I went to pick up a donation form from a long time donor: he was tell-ing me how much he like donating to us and we are a fi rst class chapter and our members are great. Here is the funny part an outfi tter next to him heard us talking and came up and asked if he could donate and then the guys across were called over and we managed to get 3 donations based on a reference from our donor. We have built something special here in Northern Alberta and it is because of you we are able to grow with your continued support towards our chapter and donors. Just a heads up make sure you don’t miss out on April 4th, 2009 Banquet get your tickets soon before they are all gone for. We will also be drawing all the prizes for the 2009 membership drive!

STORY BY TERRY OSTROM

Let at Be a Lesson to Ya

Sitting on the couch and saying to myself “there is no way you missed that bull”. I had to get my butt back up the mountain and look for him 1 more time. I had taken a shot at a 5-point bull directly below me in the timber on a slide. A 70 yd shot at his shoulder through an open patch of pine and scrub. He was quartering toward me and I thought for sure it was good. I could just make out his antlers through the 10 12-foot high spruce and pine as I looked down from the top of the Chute.

I will go back to the beginning, which is always a good idea when you don’t know where to go. It was 5am and I was fi nishing my coff ee and staring into the inky black-ness watching for head-lights coming up the road. I had not had enough sleep but it was opening day of Elk season and I had com-mitted to take a newbie out and pop his cherry…may-be. I seem to be doing a lot of that lately, introduc-ing people to hunting. It’s rewarding and a challenge to take neophyte budding nimrods along on your hunt….

is fella was 23 years old and supposed to be in good shape. Oky Doky then lets go..I am thinking he’s 24 years my junior he should be able to keep up to the old guy. Ha ha ha.

Just as I fi nished my coff ee he showed up and away we went. A short 2-mile journey to a local mountain. I instructed my ward to pull over and related that we would be hiking in a couple miles and then climbing straight up the mountain, then bugling and cow calling elk. So keep up and shut up. Away I went humping along pretty good, I had been climbing the bears hump at work 3 times a week for a lunch break, its about a 1000 ft climb in elevation over 1 mile. So this moder-ate uphill was no biggie. OK well there’s a steep uphill right off the bat and at about the 1km mark I stopped to see if the punk was still with me. Couldn’t see nothing in the pitch black, musta left him in the dust. Th at’s when I hear a noise, “RAAAlph, RAAAlph, whats that? Oh Oh he’s back down the trail puking. Ha ha…Hmmmph can’t keep up to the old guy. Poor kid. Oh well I carried on until I got to the beginning of the real climb. Th ankfully I didn’t have to wait to long, dawn

was starting to break and we needed to get to the top of the slide. Kid looked a little green so I said I am off , I told him just keep going straight up I will be waiting at the top.

Th e sun was well up in the sky and I had almost given up on him when I saw an alder shake and the kid popped out from behind it. He struggled the last 100yds up to where I was and sat down, he was a cool shade of grey, pulled out his mirror sunglasses and perched them on his baseball cap and lit a ciga-rette. After all the coughing and hacking I didn’t care about noise but told him to lose the mirror shades. I cow called and bugled intermittently for about an hour and half without

results. Now the sun was climbing to that 10ish an-gle and I said “lets move to the next slide over on the mountain. We tried for half and hour or so at that slide bugles cow calls and nothing. By now I had my jacket off and it was looking like it was going to get quite warm, not conducive to elk hunting. Well we had to go south to get to the truck anyway so we might as well go to the third slide and try some calling there. We came out of the timber near the top of the slide right below the rock and near timber-

line and when I looked down I said, “hey there’s been game through that crossing down there”. I cow called and bugled and we sat on the ledge there for about 15 minutes, no return. I stepped into the bush to look for a path to the next ledge and when I looked back the kids got the gun up and is pointing down the hill. I stepped out from behind the trees and there’s a 5 point bull elk at about 10yds looking at us. Up comes the 300 and poof! the elk is gone before I can shoot.

No panic I know this game and doubt he went to far. I put the kid where the elk was, looking downhill and moved 25 yds to the side and bugled again, then proceeded to pick the bush apart with my binoculars. I spotted antler, branched antler be-tween some trees and there’s some shoulder, Boom!!!!! a pretty steep downhill shot and he whirled around and was gone. We looked no blood no real rail to follow. We circled and pickedapart the place for an hour, no sign of a hit. I reluctantly said I musta missed aint the fi rst one, but I couldn’t see how I could miss at 70yds and the 180 grain bullet shoulda slowed him down.

results. Now the sun was climbing to that 10ish an-gle and I said “lets move to the next slide over on the mountain. We tried for half and hour or so at that slide bugles cow calls and nothing. STORY BY TERRY OSTROM

Well we gave up and headed back to the house and that’s where the story started. Th e kid went home and I sat on couch and decided to head back up the mountain. It was high noon and hot, I took the quad and drove to the base of the second slide and climbed back to where I shot and started the search again. is time fanning lower and wider through some deep slop-ing ravines. No blood, no distinct tracks except down on that quad trail and its cows and calves, must of run off when I shot. My gut told me I hit that bull and as I came over the last ridge I spotted a bedded bull, up came Winnie the 300 but I didn’t need her, the bull was dead. He had bedded there, looking downhill, antler rested against a tree and about 450yds from

where he took the bullet high in the lungs, he had bled inside nothing coming out. e good news was it was only 120yds down to the quad trail from here. Now I wondered if I should gut him or phone the kid so he could see how to do it. It was warm and I was worried about bone sour but he was laying in the shade and I fi gured ½ hour more wouldn’t make a big diff erence. Up came the kid and I showed him how to gut and quarter and made him pack a quarter down on his back taking the rest on the quad. I think he learned a few things. Just cause the punks young don’t mean he can keep up, just because there’s no sign of a hit don’t mean ya missed. So let that be a lesson to ya.

CLOSING DATES FORSUBMISSIONS

I was asked to say a few words and introduce myself as the newsletter Editor. I thought about this for some time and didn’t want to give the typical autobiography. I felt that becoming a member of the Northern Alberta SCI Chapter and SCI should speak loudly about how much I enjoy our sport and fi rmly believe in what our chapter and SCI stands for and continues to achieve for not only the hunting community but the community at large.

As Walt Disney said:“Somehow I can’t believe that there are any heights that can not be scaled by a man who knows the secret’s of making dreams come true. is special secret it seems to me can be summarized if for C’s. ey are curiosity,

confi dence, courage and consistency and the greatest of all is confi dence. When you believe in a thing believe in it all the way implicitly and unquestionably.”So I ask all members of NACI to please forward any and idea’s that you feel can help me make you newsletters better. Stories of hunting trips, studies, perhaps a article that you may have read that we should include, all your brag pictures. So with confi dence I ask you to get involved and help me make your newsletter something we are all proud of.

STORY BY GEORGE BELTER

Father and Son Antelope Hunt

It started at the NASIC chapter fund raiser two years ago when I bought an antelope hunt donated by TROPHY RIDGE OUT-FITTERS in Carlile, Wyoming. Th e hunt was to take place in the fall of 2008. After the purchase I contacted my son Doug who lives in Michigan, whether he would be interested in join-ing me. After a positive answer I made arrangements with Ralph Dap-man to add an extra hunter. We then fi lled out the required paper work and waited for fall 2008 to arrive, sometimes time really goes slow when you are waiting. Doug and I decided to drive him from Michigan and I from Edmon-ton. We both left ursday morn-ing at 6 am and I drove to Hard-ing Montana, stayed the night. e next morning after breakfast I continued on my way to Carlile which is located in the north east corner of Wyoming. On the way Doug and I kept in touch by cell phone, we met on the interstate exit to Carlile and continued on to the lodge on our way down we saw hundreds of antelope. We were shown to our cabin which is modern newly built com-plete with all facilities. en we met with Ralph and decided on what was going to happen. It was decided that Tom would be our guide and we would hunt the next morning at daybreak. Of course the excitement was building and it was hard to fall asleep. Next morning after a hearty breakfast Tom our guide and Doug and I climbed into Tom’s truck and we were off down the road to look for antelope. We passed several herds from 50 to several hundred head. Finally we settled on herd that seemed to have a fair sized head. Out of the truck behind a hill and we snuck up the hill. On all fours we crested the hill and there must have been about 50 in the herd. Most were about 350yds away but there was a nice buck about 325 yds and it was decided I would try my luck, but laying in the grass with cactus pricking my elbows I knew it was a miss as I pulled the trigger on my 270 short mag. Well after the shot they were over the hill. We tried to go around, and get ahead of them, but they were spooked enough that we could not get close. Now we decided to look for another herd and sure enough after driving about 20 minutes we found another herd with a single buck of to the side.We dropped Doug of and Tom and I drove past the buck and just then the buck fell to the ground and Doug had his fi rst An-telope. After fi eld dressing him taking pictures and measuring the lengths of horn it turned into a 15 ¾ in. buck.

Now we were off to fi nd another antelope, and we went back to a herd that we had seen earlier. In this bunch were a couple of bucks that interested me. One had a very wide spread and the other had what looked like a couple of extra points on one side. Tom and I decided that we would try for either one, but with the range fi nder they were about 500 yd. After looking at them from diff erent angles Tom decided we should climb thru a fence and slither in the grass for about a hundred yds. and then wait, as it seemed they were feeding toward us. After we managed to crawl thru very little grass and cactus which seem to be everywhere and not being detected we waited. Slowly they came toward us, but then a couple jumped the fence and stood on the road. As

luck would have it a car came along and those two decided to return back into the fi eld with the rest. Now they started to come toward us again. It can be a long time when you are waiting for them to come closer. I could not see them as I was lying behind Tom. Fi-nally Tom said they are 150 yds and he would sit up and I was to use his shoul-der as a rest. is time the 270 did its thing and I was the lucky guy with a 16 in. and a unick horn. After pictures congratulations and fi eld dressing we were back at the lodge by 11.30am. Doug and I both decided that this was the fastest hunt that we had ever expe-

rienced. e afternoon was spent sight seeing e Devils Tower, which rises to 1200 ft. and is used by many climbers in the sum-mer. In the evening we visited with other hunters and stories were told of the days experiences. Sunday morning we parted ways and Doug headed east to Michigan, and I west and north, and arrived in Edmonton before midnight. Although it was to be a 3 day hunt we were both busy and glad to head for home. Doug and I both decided now that we know what this entails we will be back to take a book trophy animal in 2010 and will take our time until we fi nd one that we like. Anybody that is interest in an antelope hunt I would highly rec-ommend TROPHY RIDGE OUTFITTERS they have knowl-edgeable guides good facilities and you will have an easy hunt

Safari Club International-Canada Endorses Bill to Scrap the Long Gun Registry

Ottawa, Canada - Safari Club International (SCI)-Canada is pleased to support Saskatchewan M.P. Garry Breitkreuz’s Private Members Bill, C-301, which would finally end the unpopular Long Gun Registry.

“Mr. Breitkreuz is widely respected for his rational approach to issues concerning Canadian firearms legislation. His legislation would make public safety the priority of our country’s gun control laws, as it should be. We all know that the long-gun registry wasn’t working because it targeted the wrong people” said Sven-Erik Jansson, chair of SCI’s Canada Committee.

“We encourage all Canadians to support this initiative” added Mr. Jansson.

SCI-Canada respectfully urges Members of Parliament from all political parties to support Bill C-301 as a reasoned, balanced approach to ending the waste of up to $2 billion of taxpayers’ money and streamlining the provisions of the Firearms Act, making government more efficient. Bill C-301 also eliminates the unwarranted stigma that has been attached to law-abiding gun owners.

“SCI’s Canadian office helps enhance the hunting tradition in Canada and supports reform legislation like C-301 that as a very important step to ensure the future of hunting,” stated SCI President Merle Shepard.

SCI-Canada works to represent and advance the interests of hunters on a wide range of issues and is committed to monitor developments at all levels of government in Canada. We work to ensure that policy development recognizes the rights of hunters and the important contribution we make to conservation and to the economy. Alternative Wolf Management Strategies and BeyondDr. Evelyn Merrill

Department of Biological Sciences - University of Alberta

Historically, wolf management goals across much of North America have focused on eradication, using poisoning, aerial gunning, trapping, bounty programs, and government employed hunters. While it is widely recognized that intensive control programs can be effective at reducing wolf populations to meet management objectives, these techniques have several limitations such as high costs and rapid wolf colonization after control efforts are stopped. As a result, jurisdictions across North America continue to struggle with developing and implementing effective wolf management strategies that balance continued persistence of wolves with the maintenance of prey populations. Therefore, as wolves continue t o thrive in most of Canada and are undergoing rapid increases in the lower 48 states, alternative effective wolf management strategies are required.

The Alternative Wolf Management Research Project arose from an on-going partnership on wolf research in the central east slopes of the Rocky Mountains between researchers at the University of Alberta (UA) and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (AB-SRD). On 12 March 2007 a meeting was to possible research to evaluate an alternative approach to reduce wolf kill rates on ungulates based on previous work in Alaska and Yukon where pack sizes were reduced and the primary pair was sterilized. The 3 major research hypotheses were that (1) wolf packs reduced to the

dominant male and female pair that were sterilized would maintain territories and prevent adjacent packs from moving into the area, (2) the reduced packs size would reduce wolf predation rate on ungulates in their territory, and (3) on average there would be a to killing smaller prey. The general idea of was that it was believe the approach will require about half the wolves be culled and require less funding over a long period to implement than traditional wolf control approaches over time. Because it required that fewer wolves be removed over the duration of a control effort, we suspected that it would be much more palatable to the general public than traditional culls.

A follow-up meeting was held on 23 July 2007 where a broader audience of potential funders, resource groups, and stakeholders were invited, including Parks Canada. At this meeting, the study design was narrowed to pack reduction by trappers, supplemented with additional helicopter reductions and wolf sterilization of the 4 targeted packs. At the conclusion of the meeting AB-SRD requested that the project move forward. Phase one of the study included capturing and deploying VHF and GPS collars on wolves in 4 “experimental wolf packs” and 10 adjacent packs. Trapping efforts started in July 2007.

As part of the requirements for issuing the AB-SRD’s Research and Collection permit for Phase II of the study, AB-SRD and the UA researchers developed a Consultation Plan for moving the project forward. The plan involved the formation of a scientific review committee which was scheduled to meet by mid-summer 2008, and a stakeholders review committee was to be convened in early fall 2008. During the one-day session on 30 July 2008, the scientific review committee was asked to assess the scientific merits and technical issues of the proposed research. Although the scientific committee voted in favor of the scientific merit of the project, there was considerable discussion on where the research would best be conducted. Based on these discussions, AB-SRD decided to discontinue its commitment to the project in the proposed study area. Alternative Wolf Management Research Project will no longer be moving forward.

ALTERNATIVE WOLF MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND BEYOND

1717

However, we are continuing to research wolves in this study area through summer 2009 focusing on the remaining radiocollared wolves as part of the Alternative Wolf Management Research Project and additional collared individuals in 4 selected packs. The study follows up on Nate Webb work on winter kill rates of wolves, but focuses on summer kill rates. Wolf predation rates have almost exclusively been studied in winter, due primarily to methodological problems for kill rate estimation in a snow–free environment. Typically wolf predation rates are estimated to be about 70% of predation rates in winter, but this now been questioned. Pete Knamiller, a new MSc at the University of Alberta ran a pilot study in summer 2008 and developed a method to estimate summer wolf kill rates and composition based on intensive tracking paths of GPS-collared relocated every 15 minutes. Because of the success of the approach and the need to address this gap in understanding summer rates of wolf predation to predict their impacts on ungulate populations, the research will continue through summer 2009 given adequate funding is available. This study will be among the first to address these issues in Canada and more importantly in a multiple-species prey system.

37TH ANNUAL SCI CONVENTION RENO, NEVEDA

WHAT A CONVENTION!!

is year’s convention in Reno was even bigger then past years if you can believe it!! ere were endless rows of booths and the taxidermy displays were nothing short of amazing. e Northern Alberta Chapter was there in numbers this year we had many members enjoying the events and most of them managed to stop by the NAC hospitality suite at the Peppermill Resort Casino. For the last 2 years the board of directors has rented out a hospitality room for 2 nights so we can bring up our donors and possible donors to meet our membership. It has worked out fantastic!! Our members meet with the donors and other chapter members as well as some special guests from the SCI executive board of directors. Pictures tell a thousand words! We also attended the Awards Night on Wednesday evening and seen Tom Selleck. Great Night! I know some of you may have heard about the mis-print on International Chapter of the Year award we won again or almost! Since that evening we have been assured everything was above board and we will put that to bed. Watch out this year!! However as noted in the last newsletter we where recognized as the top Humanitarian Chapter for our submission of the St. Edmund “Blue Bag” and a huge poster was hanging in the main hall. As you can see we all had a great time at this year’s convention. I hope you are making plans to attend next January!
