V O L U M EDetermining the volume of REGULAR

and IRREGULAR Objects

REGULAR OBJECTS

• Rectangular Prism

• Cube

• Cylinder

What is Volume?

•Volume is the measure of the capacity of a container.

• It is the space occupied by a substance.

• It is the measure of how much a container of a particular shape will hold - liquids, dry substances, etc.

•Volume is measured in cubic units.

One Cubic Unit

1 unit

(length)

1 unit

(height)

1 unit

(width)

A unit might be

measured in inches,

feet, centimeters,

etc.

Rectangular Prism

How many cubic units is this rectangle?

Yes! There

are 10

cubic

units.

The formula for finding the volume of a rectangular prism is ….

Length x Width x Height =

Volume

Example:

4 x 3 x 2 =

24 cubic units

L W H

Try this one

Remember…

there are some

cubes you can’t

see!

How many cubic units is this Cube?

3 x 3 x 3 =

27 cubic units

L W H

V = s3

Cylinder

• The cylinder has a radius and a height. Think of the area of the circle r2 and then to find the volume multiply the area by the height. You extruded the circle to give it a third dimension. Just like the squares and the rectangle.

Illustration of Formula

Example:

Ralph Laureen has a cylindrical water jug. Ithas a radius of 6 cm and a height of 25 cm.How much water will fit in the jug?

Answer: 2826 𝑐𝑚3

Irregular Objects

Displacement Method

Starting level: 40 mL

Displacement Method

Beginning Water Level: - 40 mL

Ending Water Level: 60 mL

Volume of the Object 20 mL

Exercises:

•King Dexter bought a bronze bar in the junkshop to be used in experiment. She wants to know its volume. If the measurements of a bronze bar are 10 cm (length), 5 cm (width) and 2 cm (height), what is the volume of the metal bar?

Exercises:

Atlanta Resort construct a publicpool beside their hotel in Casade Salcraper. The pool measures78 feet long, 36 feet wide, and 6feet deep. How much water willfit in the pool?

Exercises:

One of the students of Science Class wasassigned to determine the volume of a 20th

century coin. First, he was instructed tomeasure 30 mL of water. After puttingsome water, he placed the coin at thegraduated cylinder and the readingbecame 55 mL. What is the volume of the20th century coin that the student put?
