BIBLE JOURNEY: AROUND THE WORD IN 365 DAYS

Many members of the congregation (and beyond)

are enjoying the opportunity to read through the

Bible together this year—and you can join in at any

time! Sign up to let us know you are participating –

either through Realm or by contacting Erin Bowers

at [email protected] or 336-884-2248. There

aren’t any meetings, just an occasional email. But

look for preaching texts and Bible studies to focus

on our readings from this journey this year!

that not all churches have pipe organs?! There are several reasons for

NOT having a pipe organ: lack of knowledge about pipe organs, lack

of funds and/or space, prefer an electronic organ or piano, doesn’t fit

the worship style, no trained organist, etc. Fortunately, the people of

our church from its inception made having a pipe organ a priority.

You might not know this, but our Schantz pipe organ is listed in the

Organ Database maintained by the Organ Historical Society. Our entry

needs to be updated, but to view our entry, go online to the Organ

Historical Society, click on Organ Database, and answer the questions.

You’ll be surprised to discover that there are thousands of pipe organs

listed? Who knew?! Stay tuned for more trivia …

look at.” - Edward Bok

Charitable Gift Annuity: A fund that provides payments to you for life, and a gift to support a

specific mission or ministry of your choosing after your lifetime. Annuity payments are based on the

amount of the gift and the age of the donor.

Did you know churches have a positive impact on their local communities? On average, congregations

aid 2 direct service programs, 2 educational, health or cultural programs, and 1 community

development or political/social advocacy program – all of which helps the local economy, and the

health and well-being of its people.

“Don’t hold back – give freely, and you’ll have plenty poured back into your lap – a good measure,

pressed down, shaken together, brimming over. You’ll receive in the same measure you give.”

Luke 6:38

Our camp was a fun week of music, art and learning about God’s

creation and our part in it. We began the week with the creation story and then focused on parts of creation through the week, ending with a harvest

celebration and program. Thank you to

those who prepared and served our

‘harvest’ lunch! And many thanks to

the creative, talented adult and youth

leaders who made the week such a

success and to the families who

participated.

RING THOSE CHIMES!

The electronic Carillon in our church tower has lost many of its functions, including playing

hymns. Many neighbors say they have missed this ministry of our church to the community.

Some have even stepped up to contribute to a fund to restore the Carillon. Currently, the fund

contains about half of what is needed. Our goal is to bring the chimes back this fall. Please

prayerfully consider making a donation in honor or memory of a loved one, or simply as a love gift to your church to help us realize this goal. Thank you!

Summer Sunday School for Pre-K – 5th Grades

Summer Sunday School has begun. Most Sundays we combine PreK -5th and are touring

different areas of the church led by different members of our congregation. Other Sundays

we have activities and art projects in our classrooms. We meet in the larger Godly Play

room with the circular rug each Sunday.

is Monday, August 26th at 11:45 a.m. Our program will feature Shirene Gentry, a High Point author and life

coach. Shirene will talk about her spiritual identity and share her story through her new book entitled,

“Identity Unveiled: Daughter of the King of Kings”. This will be a very interesting and enlightening talk

that everyone should enjoy.

Our meal will include a delicious assortment of quiches, a vegetable salad, roll and a wonderful apple

cobbler for dessert. The lunch cost is $7.00 payable at each meeting or $63.00 for all 9 meetings. Please

make your reservations by calling Ashley at 336-884-2248 or email [email protected]. Please let us

interested—no commitment just yet! If you are interested, and would

like to be kept informed of further developments, please contact Erin

Bowers at [email protected] or 336-884-2248.

A Simple Gesture

food pantries. To participate: 1. Fill out a registration card. 2. Get

your green bag. 3. Fill your bag with food. 4. Put it on your porch

on the scheduled collection day. A volunteer from A Simple

Gesture will pick up your full green bag at your house and leave a

new bag for the next collection. For more information or if you

are interested in volunteering, please contact A Simple Gesture at

336-547-7000, or [email protected].

If you prefer to continue to bring your food offerings to church, simply bring food to our

pantry, and place it in the green bags there! Non-perishable items requested include: canned

tuna, vegetables, fruit, soup, juice and tomato sauce; jars of peanut butter, pasta sauce or

jelly; boxes of cereal, mac and cheese, or pasta; and bags of rice, sugar or flour.

ACTS Ministry

The unsheltered homeless in High Point are in need of tents, sleeping bags, and small portion

food, water, and paper products for their nourishment needs. Members with items to donate

can either call Dick Becker at 336-869-3145 for pick up, or drop them off in the gathering

area.… also High Point Community Against Violence finds they are often in need of diapers.

Diaper donations may be dropped off in the gathering area as well.

Dominican Republic Mission Trip Testimonies

My experience in the Dominican Republic was truly life changing. One of my biggest worries about this trip was my fear of a language barrier. When we got to the work site and started working, the language barrier was almost nonexistent. I remember one day Beck and I were pouring concrete to make pillars. We were having so much fun while doing it, we didn’t even realize that we were covered in sweat and concrete. The week went by pretty fast and it was time to go before we realized. I will never forget the memories I made in the Dominican Republic. -Will Allen

Just before we touched down in the D.R. I saw the ocean and the mountains from the window in the plane and knew this was going to be one of the coolest and scariest experiences I would ever have. Once we started driving to the place we were staying, the roads, towns and surrounding nature was so different than back home. The views of the mountains were breathtaking. After we arrived, although it was very hot, no one complained about it that day because no one knew what to say. The food was delicious, and I was stuffed after every meal. The people in the village were very nice, helpful and understanding. I learned that I know more Spanish than I thought but I also was taught some Spanish by the people from the village after I taught them some English. By the end of the week I felt a lot closer to God and my fellow youth. When we started packing on the last day I couldn't do it, I just sat on my bed and looked at my things because I didn't want to leave. It was even more difficult to leave when we got to the airport because that was when we had to say goodbye to our translators, which was very hard for me because I had gotten to know them very well. On the plane back to the states I started planning my next trip to the D.R. because I couldn't wait to go back. -Carter Redding

In the Dominican I saw God. I saw God in the people from Ohio, I saw God in the Dominicans, and I especially saw God in every one of us. The children in the Dominican were full of faith and they were so helpful. They helped in everything and they learned English so fast. You could tell they really didn’t want a language barrier so they did everything they could to communicate with us and help us understand. There was God everywhere on that trip. -Cadence Rainey

The trip to the DR was a life changing experience. We got to work with an amazing group of people and get a sneak peek into their lives. We were able to bond closer as friends and make plenty of new ones. I get to learn about a different and unique way to worship. I’m so glad I took this opportunity to make a difference. -Nate Gorham
