Being a contract worker these days, I found myself between engagements at the end of December. With weather being what is here in the northland during the first months of the year, a road trip seemed in order. So, to the sunny south and a chance to see some car related events while escaping the cold weather. Amelia Island should be on the bucket list of any true car enthusiast, it is at the highest level of car events held in the US and is a chance to see some of the rarest and most beautiful cars at one venue anywhere in the world. There is heavy manufacturer participation, with many museum cars not normally seen in the states. It is also exciting because of the variety of everything from brass era to the latest super cars are on display, and the venue couldn’t be any more beautiful. Some outstanding Packards were also on display, so I thought I’d share some of those with you. Minnesota Packards Member Survey ResultsIn order to better understand what you all enjoy and would like to see, I created a responder to help plan events that make sense and would likely be the most fun and get some folks interested in future event participation. Here are the results. We will use this in event planning going forward as a guide. Car collections seem most popular and I will explore events with other clubs going forward. We’ll try to contact those interested in ride alongs. If you have additional ideas you’d like to share, email me at [email protected] or call me at 612-961-5060.

There were no responses to the request to list the best events, with this club or any other that you may belong to, that might be a possible event for us to consider in the future.

There was one response as to what type of event should be avoided.

Modified, Hot Rod, Street Rod event.

Only two responded that they would attend the National in Pennsylvania this year.

Minnesota Packards 2015 EventsWe are still giving some thought to events this year in light of our survey, but the first event will be to partner with our friends in the Classic Car Club in their annual Spring Garage tour. Here are the details on that event. On our survey car collections were the most popular thing to see, as a result I expect to see many of you. You will never have a better opportunity to see them than at this event!

Upper Midwest Region Classic Car Club of America Garage Tour Saturday April 25, 2015

It’s Driving Season! The Spring Garage Tour is the best way to start off the summer driving season. There is no excuse to not bring out your Classic or other Collector Car this spring. No snowbanks to melt out of the way of the garage door. Just sunshine and dry roads. Join the trip to see cars that you will probably never see on the street. Some have been off the road before your lifetime, and will still be off the pavement after we’re all gone.

Our Annual Spring Garage Tour will cover 2/7 to possibly 3/7 of the seven county Mosquito Control District. Doughnuts and coffee start at 8:00 AM at Roger Wothe’s Collection. It is at 6317 Cambridge Street, St. Louis Park, MN. Departure time from Roger’s is 9:00 AM.

Clubs that have been invited to join us are the Packard Club, the Lincoln and Continental Owners Club, the Cadillac-LaSalle Club, the Buick Club and the Franklin Club.

Questions? Winston Peterson: 612-723-5131 or 763-557-4580, Tom St. Martin: 763-493-8497 or 763-438-7657

Other events we know about at this point are the New London to New Brighton August 8th, and we are wondering if anyone is interested in showing a car or just going to the Pantowners show on August 16th. If you’d like to participate, email me at [email protected] or 612-961-5060.

The Joint Meet with the Iowa Club is scheduled for September 11 to the 13. Again, would like to hear if you are interested in going.

(Amelia Island 2015) (continued from page 1)

A ’41 Darrin 180 and a ’34 12 cylinder phaeton.

Have you ever seen two Packard speedsters together before? I sure haven’t.

Here we have one of 50 ’34 12 coupe roadsters and a ’34 12 Lebarnon bodied “Aero Coupe.”

A wonderful event worth the time to see – if you’re in Florida, give it a try! I think you’re sure to enjoy it.

If you would like to see all the cars I got to see at this event, check out these webpages:

It was an overcast and gloomy day (a mirror reflection of my mood) as I turned on to 320 Sanborn Drive for the last time. I knew this address and location well from being there dozens of times and shipping many packages of Packard repair parts addressed to Dr. Earl Sejurp. With 60 plus years as a mechanic, I thought he deserved a doctorate.

Farewell and Good Luck, Dr. Earl by Mike Dulinski

The task at hand was to pick up the Packard Club chairs, tables and a few boxes of literature stored by Earl for many years. The chairs and tables were only used once a year for our annual, much attended, Technical Seminar hosted by Earl. As we loaded the chairs, we talked about the previous occupants of them, many were pillars of the club no longer with us.

The seminars were spectacular with many fine automobiles of all makes scattered in the driveway among the huge Oak trees in fall colors. Other attractions were different projects Earl was working on, a table of homemade baked goods, a repair shop resembling a Norman Rockwell painting and dozens of car enthusiasts (nuts) of all ages. There were always guest speakers sharing information about almost any topic related to car collecting with hundreds of years of experience between them. The ladies of the club went antiquing while the men attended to serious business.

Earl always had stories about his years as a mechanic (sometimes detective) on particularly tricky repairs. Homemade test equipment and repair gadgets were on display to inspect – Earl was always proud of his straight eight head gasket collection.

After my truck was loaded, I took some final pictures to remember days gone by. I had a hard time focusing the camera due to the humidity in my eyes (now, too, as I write this) but I think you get the picture. Earl was in the process of packing the garage contents for storage until he relocates his shop to his permanent home in Texas. He says he’s done working on customer cars – hopefully, he’ll get a chance to work on his own car.

Earl was our mechanical maestro for decades and he will be greatly missed. As Bob Hope sang, ‘’Thanks For The Memories.’’ Thanks also for the friendship and guidance. Farewell and good luck, Dr. Earl.
