Please be sure to

say hello and

help them feel

welcome !

We have some fun things planned for February. On the 2nd we have a Sock Hop Dance in tribute to Buddy Holly, Big Bopper Richardson and Richie Valens. Should be a fun night. Our wine dinner for February will be on Valentine’s Day for all the couples wanting a romantic night out. And Prime Rib Night will be on the 22nd.

Details and on the events are in this newsletter. Please be sure to RSVP.

I would like to thank everyone for being so cooperative in signing tickets. For those of you who are not aware we are requesting/requiring everyone to sign a ticket when they charge anything at the golf shop or restaurant. This protects both you and the club from incorrect charges.

Please note that we will continue to bill Trail Fees monthly until something happens with the sale or not.

Handicap fees were also billed this month.

Looking ahead, please be aware that we will be aerifyng the greens on March 10, 11 and 12. We will also be closed on all the Mondays in March and April 1 for course maintenance.

Thank you,

Jim Nodurft, PGA

Concerning the Advisory Board

Well February is just around the corner and yes we are still waiting to hear

more regarding the club sale. It is our understanding that things are

continuing to move forward although slower than desired. A reminder to all

that the club has re-implemented the policy of having members sign all charge

tickets in all areas of the club. While a small inconvenience for some this

policy protects you and the club form incorrect charges. So please remember

to check in at the golf shop each time you play and sign your ticket in the res-

taurant prior to leaving.

Activities continue to be well attended with the New Year’s Eve party

ushering in 2019, the Polar Bear golf tournament fielding 80 players and a

sold out Wine Dinner in January. The social committee is bringing a new

event in February. The Big Bopper Party celebrating the “Day the Music

Died” on Feb 2nd starts at 6pm with costumes, dance contests, and lots of

fun. Hope many will come on out. February golf brings the Divorce Open

for couples, the next wine dinner will be on Valentine’s Day, Feb 14th, and

the ever popular Prime Rib night is Feb 22nd. Do remember to sign up early

and enjoy the festivities.

Jim has promised another Rules class soon for those that were unable to

attend the first class. As all the golfers know there have been lots of changes

which we are all trying to get accustomed to. The maintenance team is hard at

work continuing to keep our course in prime condition. Some of the Tee

signs have been moved for ease of mowing, Par three’s roped off to protect

the course and bad spots on greens are being plugged. The course will be

closed on all Monday’s in March for course preparation for spring and

summer including aerification.

The Advisory Board looks forward to the opportunities for 2019 and seeing

everyone at the club.

Last Month we had the Polar Bear Tournament. Eighty people braved the freezing 65 degree weather! This month is The Divorce Open. It is a couples modified alternate shot. Details are below. Don’t forget that there are many new changes to the rules of golf and our local rules sheet. I did a seminar in December and will be doing another one on February 5th at 4:00 in the Organ Room. No need to sign up. Just show up if you can. Handicap fees were charged this month. If you do not have a handicap, and would like one, please see me, Mike or Nick in the golf shop. Fee is $35 for the year. Fairways and greens, Jim Nodurft, PGA

Greetings Members,

With February rapidly approaching it is time to begin the process of implementing a planned control of

unwanted weeds. Pre-emergent herbicides are typically applied to stop the heavy germination of several

species of weeds including Poa annua, crabgrass and goosegrass. Weeds are the number one pest

problem in turfgrass and are aggressive competitors for water, nutrients and sunlight. There are many

characteristics of weeds which allow them to survive and increase in population.

1. Weeds can produce tens to hundreds of thousands of seeds per plant.

2. Weeds can germinate and establish quickly even in unfavorable environmental and soil conditions.

3. Weed seed can remain viable for many years if buried in soil. Due to large quantity of seed

production some weeds have greater potential for long term survival.

4. Weed seed has various adaptations such as clinging pods, wings to fly or are very light allowing

greater area of dispersion.

5. Most perennial weeds possess special vegetative structures that allow them to produce asexually

and survive.

It is very important to note that in order to control weeds you must first know what weed species are

present and where. This is a technique known as scouting and mapping.

Scouting and Mapping references include:

1. Weed species present

2. Weed stage of growth

3. Weed population size

4. Previous control measures

5. Health of infested area

6. High or low traffic area

7. Degree of sun exposure

8. Dry or waterlogged area

Each herbicide has a label that explains what and how it controls. Herbicides can be very useful in

controlling unwanted plants from damaging desired species. However, it is an absolute must to know

what weeds species need to be controlled, conditions where weeds are present and how a specific

herbicide works.

Also planned is the strategic removal or thinning of plant material course wide. This process is to allow

the ease of maintenance, elimination of rodent habitat and obstruction of play.

Procedures include:

1. Scouting for decayed and diseased plants and trees.

2. Removal and disposal of downed material.

3. Seed/sod planting in affected removal area on the golf course turf.

Thank you all for your support.

Always Greenside Up,

Gil Martinez, GCSAA (A)

The newsletter due date is prior to our January Jill so winner announcements

will be next month.

Your leadership team has been hard at work already this month with the

approval of a 2019 budget, finalization of tournament leaders, audit of last

year’s finances and in general preparing for a great new year. Jean Davis and

several others have been busy with the development and editing of our 2019

LGA Directory, now completed and at the printers. There were many edits

this year due to the rule changes and large membership change. Thank you

for a stellar job.

Sylvia and Cheryl Tom Nelson have us on a strong base with all of the Play

Day games planned and scheduled. Thank you both for agreeing to take on

this task. After a great deal of discussion the Play Day and executives decided

the Golf software we have been using in the past is not returning the value

for the cost so processes for keeping the points and data required have been

established and the golfware software deleted from our expenses (thank you

Valerie for arranging our refund). We will need all members to please circle

their birdies on their cards for Sylvia’s quick identification and recording.

Janis Paul is handling our Hole in One fund for this year. Most have already

contributed however if memory fails or you are not sure if you contributed

your $2 contact Janis and she will provide clarity.

Our first tournament this year is the President’s Cup and Club Championship

on April 8-9, 2019. It is being coordinated by Chris Fritz, Lynn Zeemont and

Karen Lord. A fun time to be had by all I am sure.

A final reminder to all interested in joining our Border Team this year, see

Candy ASAP as shirts have been ordered however additional members are

still welcomed.

As always I want to extend a big thank you to all of the Picacho Hills

Ladies Golf Association for all your willingness and support.

Greetings and salutations! I hope everyone had a

great New Year’s. Here at the MGA we are

definitely excited about 2019. We have an

excellent slate of officers who will be working

hard to bring you some great tournaments this year. Don’t

forget the Club’s Divorce Open coming up in February, too

bad we can’t have cameras following everyone; it would

probably make for some riveting reality television. 2019 should

be an interesting year all around, with the new rule changes

and new ownership coming our way. I hope you were able to

enjoy the prime rib Chef Henri and his team laid out for our

yearly meeting on the 10th, just one of the benefits of being a

MGA member. I’m looking forward to my term as your MGA

President. Please feel free to hit me up with any comments,

concerns or questions you may have.
