As most members already know, the Chase Bank building where the Chamber has maintained offices for the past 30 years has been sold. It became imperative for the Chamber staff to find new quarters and after an exhaustive search a new site was found. The Chamber’s new offices are located in The Preserve which is located right off 610 and East T.C. Jester Boulevard. The newaddress will be 2050 North Loop West, Suite 203, Houston, Texas, 77018, and the telephone number will not change. The new facility can be easily reached via East T.C. Jester Boulevard, coming into entrance # 2 and there are ample parking spaces with only a short walk to the building.Following a complete move in, and getting organized, an invitation will be given for a December 7reception where members can see the new offices.

ChamBer maDe the moVe

Dear Members,

What a year. We saw a new President sworn into the Oval Office, cried as Houston survived oneof the worst storm events in the nation’s history, and cheered as the Astros won the World Seriesfor the first time ever. We have had shocking news abroad and at home, and the headlines havetaken us on a rollercoaster of emotions that change weekly and sometimes daily.

Here at home we have had our ups and downs as well, though thankfully not at the frequency of the world at large. We have seen favorite stores and restaurants close, and have welcomed the ground breaking of our new HEB, and other new ventures. We have been plagued by an organized gang of thieves, and cheered as those same thieves were finally caught by our local law enforcement. We rose to the challenge of Hurricane Harvey, and came through the storm as strong as ever.

And our Chamber has gone through the same. We opened the calendar year with a fantasticEconomic Forecast Luncheon (2018’s seats are on sale now! See inside!) and then struggled asour largest fundraiser, the Annual Crawfish Festival, was shut down by bad weather. In spite ofthat we determinedly carried on, and awarded more scholarships at our Education Luncheonthan ever before. Lack of interest had us retire our Gateway to Local Government Luncheon, but the membership rallied for a fantastically attended and wildly successful Chairman’s Event. We closed out the fiscal year in September with the highest number of members in the pastdozen years, and event attendance is up across the board.

Out of all those things, perhaps the most momentous event for the staff and I was the recentmoving of the Chamber office. Moving is always disruptive and annoying, but was also necessary. Our new office is wonderful, and will be a strong place to lead the Chamber from over the nextyears, but I will admit – annoyance of moving aside - leaving our old home was bittersweet. The bank building on 19th street was the Chamber home from its beginning, and there was a lot of history and memories embedded in that space. I myself have driven to the old officeto work for almost 10 years, and I will miss running into random people in thecavernous lobby of Chase. But time and progress march on without heed, and we must march with it or be left behind.

So as I gather my family and my friends to celebrate this holiday season, I will take a moment to raise a glass to Chamber history, and what the future holds for our dear organization. I hope you will do the same.

Cheers.

Jacob MillweeYour Chamber President

What a Year as we Review the Chamber’s Events and Activities of 2017

As of press time, from December/January Through November, 2017 we were pleased to welcome these new members:

Our monthly events continued to attract members and prospects for networking opportunities:

Our annual November/December issue allows us to look back on the fiscal year 2017 and reminisce about the many tangible ways the Chamber helped its membersgrow their businesses, get referrals, build friendships and find trusted fellow members for products and services. This was a year filled with activities as the Chamber

worked to meet its Mission: “To promote and develop business and industry beneficial to the economic viability of the greater Heights area.”

The 2017 Education Luncheon attracted a huge crowd and the program recognized graduates going into the military, scholarships

presented to deserving students, and honored outstanding educators.

New Member Plaques were presented to 103 members and 70 ribbon cutting events were conducted during the year.

In December the Education Committee will begin meeting at Baptist Temple Church (theChamber moved) and Baptist Temple, (keeps us central for all the schools), is 2 blocks fromChase at 230 W. 20th Street between Yale and Rutland. Our parking lot is located behind thechurch and accessible from 19th Street. The main entrance to the building is located on the westside of the building (near the covered drop-off area), and it easily identifiable from both 20th St.and 19th St. parking lot. It will likely be in the “Heritage Room,” which is located on the firstfloor of the building. They are providing coffee! See you Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Baptist Temple at 10 am.

The Education Committee’s goal is to build partnerships among businesses and schools! This year we are emphasizing more education with ways to make it mutually beneficial for bothparties. Businesses—you have a marketing opportunity with the PTO, events hosted by theschools that gets your name associated with parents, teachers and kids (your customers now or inthe future)! Businesses can support endeavors through time—by reading (less than an hour) toelementary students. Role model! Give of yourself. And yes, donations can help with Festivals,Fun Runs and Equipment. Schools can call businesses to be a vendor at one of their events orPTO meetings. Maybe light snacks are provided—more people come and this helps your statisticswith school rankings, grading etc… so let’s build partnerships!

High School Ahead is partnering with Farmers Insurance for Lemonade Day! Schools are reaching out to help Post-Harvey victims and celebrating Harvey Hero’s. Harmony Schools and Houston Community College have an event every other week through mid-December. Womenof Waltrip need women to speak to a small group of high school girls—share your experiences and knowledge. Many Career Days are coming. Scarborough is growing and will have severalfundraisers to help with their needs, especially the band.

St. Pius X has their Learning Center opening and had their Fly Over the School with Channel 13and their football stadium was named for their alum, Gary Kubiack. Garden Oaks Montessorihas Read for the Record coming soon and will need volunteers as well as Kathryn Smith Elementary. Hartz Chicken is ready to help schools with their fundraisers—call Naro! He spokeabout Veteran’s Day at K. Smith. American Legion Post 560 can help by making all those historylessons come to life—a veteran (young and older) is available to visit your classroom or businessand talk about it: history. Northside High School will have their Financial Night and programsbeginning in the spring and Houston Highway Credit Union will assist. Houston Heights needs a gym to practice and play in! Scholarship applications are on the Chamber website and the Education celebration for May was discussed.

For further Education initiatives, please access “Education” on our website under the “Article &News” Section.

Since joining the Idol of the Heights committee in 2013 I have served in many various roles. This year I have the esteemed honor of leading the committee as their Chair. It is a pleasure working with my committee members,Hector Castellanos of Allegiance Bank, Taylor Woodard of Raymond James & Assoc. Inc., Jan Stephenson of Jan Stephenson Graphic Design. I enjoy the position because Idol of the Heights gives the community something fun to look forward to every year. I am always amazed to see year after year the number of singers who come backto compete for their second, third, and even fourth time. It shows me how much winning Idol of the Heights reallymeans to them personally. It is very exciting to see the competition grow.

In 2017 we had more contestants than our record breaking 2016. We expect to again have record numbers at the 2018competitions. Idol of the Heights also provides the opportunity to work with venues, sponsors, business owners, and more which is exciting because we work with those who make the Houston Heights community so eclectic and amazing. The committee’s participation is crucial in deciding on venues for our events, getting sponsorships, event promotions, coordinating setup and take down after each competition, and organizing volunteers to assist with artist check-in. I lookforward to what 2018 has in store for Idol of the Heights.
