Indiana University Wells Scholars Program

The PSAT is an important indicator of College and Career Readiness. Sopho-mores and Juniors interested in taking Homestead courses that provide students with the opportunity to earn free college credit should remember that the scores they earn on this exam are used to qualify them for all of our free Dual Credit courses. Juniors who do well on this exam may also be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and other programs that use PSAT/NMSQT scores. On Wednesday, October 16, students at Homestead High School will take the PSAT. This test will provide students, parents, and guidance counselors with an earlier and better gauge of post-secondary preparation. After the test, students get free access to My College QuickStart. Some features of My College QuickStart include an interactive score report (allowing students to address areas of weak-ness before sitting for the actual SAT), a personality test, major and career sug-gestions, and a starter list of colleges. AP Potential may also be used after the test to identify students who demonstrate potential for Advanced Placement Courses. Please encourage your students to do their best on this test. The following links are great resources to help your students to prepare for the exam and they are FREE!

SPARTANATTENTION:

Final exam procedure Final exams at Homestead High School are scheduled for December 18th 19th, and 20th and May 26th, 27th, and 28th. Students are expected to be in attendance on these days to take their final exams. Parent/student va-cations should be scheduled after the end of each semester, noting that the second semester exam schedule may change due to cancellation days. Stu-dents may NOT be parent excused on final exam days. Students are expected to be present in school the entire day during final exams. Any student who is absent during final exams will be considered unexcused and will receive a zero on exams/projects/papers/etc., regardless of the time in which they were completed. For example, a student who is required to give a presentation prior to a final exam day for a final grade must be in atten-dance for the scheduled final exam day for that class in order to receive credit.

Due to the important nature of final exam review and testing, NO LATE ARRIVALS OR EARLY DISMISSALS WILL BE ALLOWED ON

FINAL EXAM DAYS!All students will be required to take finals during these designated

times.

Students who walk home are not permitted to exit Door #1 at the end of the school day. Walkers exit-ing the building should exit Door #2 if they are headed south toward the baseball fields, or Door #35 if going toward the YMCA or St. Elizabeth’s. Parents must pick up students from only Doors #4, #7, and #26. Door #1 is not a student entrance/exit.

FCCLA Competes in Anaheim This July, FCCLA members at Homestead had the opportunity to com-pete at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California. Stu-dents who advance from the state competition attend nationals where they create projects that encompass aspects from the Family and Con-sumer Science curriculum. Megan Hostetler and Ariana Layton, both se-niors this year at Homestead, competed in the entrepreneurship category at Nationals and received a gold medal for their business plan of an A.M. Café business. Jennifer Brocher, a senior this year at Homestead, was awarded a silver medal in Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation where she redesigned a restaurant within a hotel to meet tourist’s needs. Kather-ine Scardina and Palak Sood, both juniors this year, won a silver medal in food innovations for creating a healthy salad which incorporates en-vironmentally friendly options, such as making a salad dressing holder from rice paper! Wren Niedzwiecki, a recent graduate of Homestead, received a silver medal in the interior design category at Nationals where she was required to design a modern Floridian hotel beach resort. All Homestead participants were able to exercise their current knowledge of family and consumer sciences in a formal setting, putting themselves to the true test and building upon their foundation of the expertise.

Latin Students Take on Italy

Four students from Homestead traveled to Italy with the Indiana Junior Classical League in June. Thir-ty travelers from all over the state enjoyed the sights, sounds, and tastes of Italy this summer from June 10 – June 20 with the Paideia Institute. The group spent five days in Rome and four days in the Bay of Naples region. The group read Latin inscriptions and passag-es on site, connecting texts and knowledge from the classroom to real world locations. This was an un-forgettable experience for the students and chaper-ones, as they saw the stunning sights of Rome. Photo-graphs and highlights from the trip can be found here.

Attention Class of 2020: The Common Application announces

2019-2020 essay prompts By conducting a review process every other year, rather than annually, we can hear from admissions officers, as well as students, parents, and counselors, about the effectiveness of the essay prompts. These prompts are designed to elicit information that will strengthen the other components of the application.

2019-2020 Essay Prompts1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incom- plete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or m failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify

a solution.

5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engag- ing that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it cap tivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

TRAVEL TO ECUADOR AND THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Nine Homestead High School students went to Ecua-dor and the Galapagos Islands June 21 through July 2 with one parent and Biology teachers Bekki Vail and Diana Cronk. Since there were only 12 people in our group, we were paired with two other schools, one from San Diego and the other from Olympia, Washington. The first day was spent in Quito touring Ecuador’s capital city and the Initian Museum of the Equator where they balanced eggs on a nail the day after the summer solstice. The next day, we flew into San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands and hiked up to overlook Darwin’s Cove. The day was capped off with a stop on the beach with Galapa-gos sea lions to watch the sunset. The next day began with a hike past marine iguanas to a beach for snorkeling and some free time in San Cristobal before boarding a boat for the two-hour ride to Santa Cruz. After our return to Quito, the group toured the Mindo Cloud Forest, hummingbird sanctuary, butterfly garden, choc-olate factory (a group favorite!) and hiked up to a waterfall. Along the way, the students gained a sense of accomplishment and self-sufficiency that cannot be replicated in a normal classroom environment.

“Our trip provided opportunities to learn about Darwin’s discoveries and was informative and fun at the same time. Meeting people from other schools and our local guides was the best part of the trip. Everyone was so nice and learning about the culture of Ecuador and discovering the beauty of Ecuador was a bonus.” Harley Walczak (11)

The students have all been study-ing Spanish at Southwest Allen County Schools for at least two years and ap-plied all they have learned as they met new people and explored new places. “The Ecuador trip was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had,” said senior Michael deCaro. “Everything we got to experience was incredi-ble from the views to the food and people as well.” Homestead students spent four hours volun-teering at a community center for the elderly in Baños, Ecuador, where they prepared lunch for more than 40 people and led arts and crafts activities. The students peeled potatoes, cut squash, read stories, sang songs, made friend-ship bracelets, danced and colored. The Spanish V students on the trip also do-nated a book of stories they had written and published in the spring of 2019. “At the elderly center I got the oppor-tunity to draw with a lot of the seniors

and make stencils for them to draw in (apples, sunsets, etc.) which was ex-tremely rewarding and one of the cool-est experiences I’ve done,” said Char-lotte Hagedorn, a 2019 HHS graduate who is a freshman at Indiana University. Other highlights from the trip includ-ed taking a Spanish class with native speakers, taking a train ride along the route of the volcanoes, learning to salsa dance, visiting a volcano crater, stand-ing in both hemispheres at the equator,

and shopping at one of the most famous markets in Latin America. “Going to Ecuador was an actu-al experience of a lifetime,” said senior Chloe Johnson. “Interact-ing with all of the native speak-ers, especially the sweet people

at the elderly home, was a great experi-ence that I feel really helped me better my Spanish. The hikes we went on, the people we met, and the things we saw were truly extraordinary and I know I will remember this trip forever and I hope to go back and continue traveling to Spanish-speaking countries.” Spanish teachers Angela Bailey, Justin Peeper, Kelly Truman and Lisa Yde led-students on the trip students on the trip.

Homestead High School’s Parent Club & Sylvan Learning Centers of Northeast Indiana are

offering SAT / ACT exams for PRACTICE

• The SAT and the ACT exams are predictable and you can increase your scores through practice.

• The SAT and the ACT do not test intelligence, and they do not necessarily reflect high school grades. However, they are used in the college admission process.

• The Homestead High School Par-ent Club along with The Princeton Review instructors provide official SAT/ACT college entrance ex-ams for students to PRACTICE,

receive scores, learn tips on answering questions, and review results for improving scores in PREPARATION for taking the “REAL” college entrance exams.

• We simulate the college entrance exam environment, provide professional proctors and score/review sessions.

• We also provide take-home exam packets for those students with IEPs, scheduling conflicts or emergencies.

Virtually all U.S. universities and colleges accept SAT or ACT exam scores.

These SAT / ACT entrance exam scores are pivotal components of college applications.

SPARTAN athletics

21SPARTAN TIMES VOLUME 6 Issue 2 SEPTEMBER 2019

The Pre-Participation Physical Eval-uation Form (PPE) must be signed by a physician (MD or DO) holding an unlimited license to practice medicine, a nurse prac-titioner (NP) or a physician assistant (PA) only after the medical history is reviewed, the examination performed, and the PPE Form completed in its entirety. Pre-signed or pre-stamped forms will NOT be accepted. Physicals must be

dated after April 1, 2019 for athletic par-ticipation during the upcoming 2019-2020 school year. All the updated forms are on the athlet-ic web page under the tab titled “Pre-Par-ticipation Forms” as well as outside Home-stead’s athletic office. Click here to find the forms. The most current version of the IHSAA PPE Form must be used and may not be altered or modified in any way.

IHSAA PHYSICAL FORM PROCESS

In order to remain eligible to play, ath-letes will undergo mid-term grade checks. A snapshot will be taken three school days after the grading period ends at 4 p.m. It is this “snapshot” that will determine athletic eligibility for the remainder of the semester. Students must be passing 5 credits to be eligible. It must also be noted that an incom-plete (I) is treated as an F.

Q: If the grading period ends on one day, why is the snap shot taken at a later date? A: The snapshot is taken 3 school days after the grading period ends for those

who may have missing work or previous outstanding work to be completed.

Q: If the student shows me a Power-School grade that differs from the infor-mation given, what should I do?A: Ask the student if the printout was done on the day of the snapshot and if there are still discrepancies, see Ms. Tanzler or Mr. Updegrove.

Q: What if a student is passing 5 credits one day after the snapshot due to some updates in PowerSchool at 6 p.m. on the day of the snapshot?A: The student athlete will remain ineli-gible.

Mid-term Academic Eligibility

Althetic Passes The admission price to all home sporting events costs $6 during the regular season. We offer athletic passes and punch cards that can save students and individuals money. We currently offer an Adult All-Sports Pass for $75, a Student All-Sports Pass for $40, and punch cards that cost $50 each that are good toward 10 admis-sions to any home athletic event (please note that these cards never expire and may be shared by multiple individuals).

**Tournaments and IHSAA events do not apply to any of the above passes.**

Academic EligibilityThis is a student-parent responsibility. In order to remain academically eligible to compete in IHSAA athletics students must be passing five credits. By IHSAA rule an “I” (incomplete) is considered a failing grade when determining eligibility. The IHSAA requires all schools to determine a “certification” date within 10 school days of the school’s “end of grading period.” Grade checks are made after 9 weeks and at the semester. Any student athlete who has not passed five credits on this “certification date” will be declared ineligible for one academic semester.

SPARTANNinth Grade Academy News

A message from Ninth Grade Academy Assistant Principal, Jennifer Bay

Welcome to Homestead High School, parents of the Class of 2023! We have had a terrific start to the 2019-2020 school year with our newest Spartans! As we continue this journey toward college and career readiness, your son’s/daughter’s success is very dependent on two-way communication. We regularly encourage our Ninth Grade students to be self-advocators. It is imperative that each student learns to reach out if he/she has positives to share, is struggling academically, has a question or concern, and/or needs further information or details. In order to encourage this self-advocacy and support teacher/staff/student communication, each Ninth Grade student has received his/her own SACS email account, and we encourage regular check-ing and use of the account. Within this two-way communication, it is also very important that you, as parents, stay informed and contact us directly whenever needed. I encourage you to double-check Powerschool to make sure your email address(es) are current. We will frequently send out import-ant information, reminders, and updates via email. I encourage everyone to folow us on Twitter as well, if you don’t already (@spartanshhs). You do not need to have a Twitter account to follow us. Tweets and daily student announcements are also posted on our Homestead Website. See below for specific contact information, and please call or write with any questions. We are looking forward to a terrific year with the class of 2023!
