The sounds of music havehung over Pensacola Beach'score area for many years. Tooloud. Too late. And almost im-possible to control. Santa RosaIsland Authority boards over themany years have tried. Theythought they had won the battlewith the 70 decibel restrictionWednesday, July 23, at their com-mittee meetings, but the musiccame blasting back once again.

Residents living in the corearea are complaining that thenoise from nearby entertainmentfacili t ies is getting worse.Sheriff's deputies say they can-not enforce the ordinance be-cause they do not have theproper equipment or the exper-tise.

Beverly Boswell, owner ofthe Sandshaker Lounge, who hasbeen trying to comply said therehave been fewer complaints re-cently about her bar. "Our im-provements are helping," shesaid. "We should try to live to-gether, work together and playtogether."

Jeff Marker, speaking for theBoard of the South Harbour As-sociation, responded, "The 2 a.m.

and Dave Oerting are the principlerace officers.

"This race was a success fromits very beginning," Rita Finkbonecommented. "Race committeemembers and the PBYC have al-ways done everything to make thisone of the Club's most high pro-file competitions."

For more information aboutthe Race for the Roses, call RitaFinkbone at 850-554-3219 or JulieConnerley at 850-932-5958.

Sleepless on the Beach - Residents Continue To Battle The Bandstimelines were shot down andsince that time Capt'n Fun's is un-believable. The customers theyare attracting are thugs. Not tour-ists. A combination of time anddecibel levels needs to be en-forced."

A motion to fund a decibelmeter passed unanimously.

The Committee voted todesignate 1.75 acres just west ofthe Gulf Pier as an alcohol freearea. This item will go to the FullBoard for approval and then onto the Board of County Commis-sioners for final approval.

In another Pier related prob-lem, Bob West, SRIA Safety Di-rector, said the differences be-tween anglers and the surfersaround the Pier can be settled bylaw enforcement. "This is not abig issue in my mind," West said."I would like to see segregationof surfing, fishing, and swim-mers. It's a good thing. I recom-mend that the present ordinanceof prohibiting surfing 900 feeteast of the Pier be enforced with-out changes."

This item will be discussedfurther.

Creating more parkingplaces for customers is the goalof Portofino Boardwalk busi-nesses and recently they askedthe Authority to consider mak-ing the parking lot "patron only,"meaning employees would haveto find other parking areas. Prob-lems associated with this planrevolve around the safety of theemployees walking alone duringthe late hours and the enforce-

ment of the policy. The parking lot is the area

which begins in front of IslandStyle and continues to Key Sail-ing. The patrons only parkingwould be in effect from 10 a.m. to9 p.m. during the months ofMarch through November. TheSRIA has determined that thepolicy should be enforced bybusiness owners.

Ronna Saxton, mother of afemale Boardwalk employee, spoke against the policy, point-ing out that the Boardwalk isvery dangerous at night.

Board member John Peacocksaid there was a risk even at theMall.

Saxton replied, "They arenot all drunk at the Mall."

A final draft of the patrononly parking policy will be for-warded to the Full Board meet-ing on August 13.

Presentation of a plan forbeautification of PensacolaBeach which was promised byAllen Levin before his death, wasgiven by Robert Rinke, Portofinodeveloper.

Portofino developers volun-tarily agreed to pay additionallease fees with the excess above$315,000 per year to be desig-nated to an Island BeautificationFund and to the General Fund.

"This is a big deal to the Is-land and we are proud of it,"Rinke said. "It should be thelegacy that Portofino leaves tothe Island. It's a lot of money thatstays on the Island, goes on for-ever, never goes to Pensacola."

The SRIA decided to re-quest information to better un-derstand the lease and bond re-quirements. This report will bebrought back to the August 23Committee meetings includingstaff input, bonding and financ-ing information

The Full Board approved arequest to rezone the Palace prop-erty from general retail to com-mercial hotel during a quasi judi-cial hearing prior to the begin-ning of the committee meetings. The development will be a hotelwith four 650 square feet suitesper floor.

A low bid of $2500 was ac-cepted from Quina Grundhoeferto prepare the drawings for theplan proposed by ChrisShearman, Alcon Constuction, for core area development.

A Budget Workshop was tofollow the Wednesday nightmeeting, but the regular agendahad consumed so much time thatBuck Lee, Executive Director, suggested that each memberstudy the budget and makesnotes to be discussed with staff.

John Peacock ended themeeting on a high note when hesaid, "I would like to commendthe SRIA staff for their excellentjob during the Blue Angels AirShow. The weather created anespecially difficult situationwhich was handled well by all."

The Full Board meeting willbe Wednesday, August 13 at 5p.m. at the Island Authority of-fice. All meetings are open to thepublic.

The Islander Lounge had al-ready attained the ripe old ageof 21 years by the time I movedto Pensacola Beach in 1979. Thebar patrons inside were charac-terized by their snobbishness. The Islander was their lounge.Make no mistake about it. If astranger managed to negotiatethe long hallway leading to thebar, he was greeted by many"looks." Like "Do Not Enter.""No Strangers Allowed.""Maybe, you should leave." Justlittle subliminal messages. Theinterloper didn't usually stay longenough to finish his drink andthe guffaws of the locals couldbe heard all down the street asthey laughed that one off andordered a round to celebrate.

I was a stranger when I cameto the Beach, but not for long. Ihad the good fortune to buy ahouse on Ariola Drive, where theinfamous Harry Gowens thrivedamong a bunch of hippies (atleast they called themselves hip-pies). He asked me to come overthat summer to help them preparefor the Beach Appreciation Party.

I went. I loved them. Theyloved me. I was "in."

So, when I entered the Is-lander for the first time, I was inthe company of magicians. I wasmade welcome as evidenced bythe fact that I did not pay for onesingle drink all night.

The bar was then owned byAaron Grimsley, a barrel of mon-keys kind of guy - about once ortwice a year. He could tell sto-ries, crack jokes, and he listeneda lot. Probably, the main reason,he was considered the top dogamong bar owners on the Beach. That, and the idea that he felt the"no strangers allowed" club washilarious.

The bar, back then, con-sisted of five areas; the packagestore which was open to all viathe front door, the office, thelong bar with a few odd littletables, and the Outrigger Roomwhich was where pool tables andpinball machines prevailed. There was also an upstairs roomwhich was rarely mentioned, butit was always available for

"sleeping it off" as opposed todriving.

The Package Store was anentity to itself. You could alwaysdrop in on a frosty morning tochat with the manager R.L.Touart. No purchase required. The store was jammed with mer-chandise, most of it normal beerand hard liquor of your choice. However, Aaron had some kindof quirk which compelled him tobuy odd bottles of miscellaneousbeverages. High up, he had onebottle shaped like Elvis Presley, complete with guitar. I wanted tobuy it to give it to my daughterCandy, for her antique collection.

"Well, since it's you, I canlet you have it for half price,"Aaron drawled. "Don't know whyno one ever wanted that bottle,"he said as he removed it from theshelf, dusted off years of debris, and carefully wrapped it in abrown paper bag.

Did I mention that Aaron wasa generous man, completely be-loved by the Beach family?

The Package Store also of-fered "purses - - for free." Beachgirls always carried Crown Royalbags as purses, so Aaron kept asupply on hand to give them whenthe old one wore out.

After the favored members ofthe Island fraternity made their waythrough the tunnel-like hallway tothe bar, they took their seats. I'msure there was some kind of peck-ing order. Morrie was in bar stoolnumber one, close to the TV andthe Six O'Clock News.

Harry Gowens sat in themiddle stool where he could con-duct the business of the day.Flanked on his right would be FredBates and Wally Pecevich; and tohis left were Bill Motley, MaryDrees and Diane Roberts. Theseare the ones I remember. If youwanted to sit at the bar and didn'thave a reserved seat, you were sentto one of the tiny, wobbly tree trunktables, even if the bar stools wereall empty.

There was a small dance floor, but hardly anyone danced.

Quite a few did migrate to theOutrigger Room to play games.

Many events, impromptu and

otherwise happened at the Is-lander. It was the site of the BeachFamily Thanksgiving Day Feastwhen the best cooks brought foodand loaded down the newspapercovered pool tables. It was alwaysa joyous day. It was the site of thepact between Larry Geisel, FrankDouglas and me to start the MardiGras on the Island. You all knowwhere that went. The Islander wasa proud sponsor of the SpringBreak Festival. They hosted thePool Tournament which was al-ways won by either Papa JoeReynolds or Gale Walker.

Mainly, just meeting at the Is-lander every day was required tokeep your membership current. Wewere all very able to maintain ourmemberships. Any business whichthrives on the Beach for fifty yearshas to have a lot going for it. Thismeans making changes. Oh yes, itdoes, you guys.

Even just changing hands. PatGilmore was the original owner. Hesold it to Aaron Grimsley, who soldit to Ken Rudski, who sold it to his

brother and wife, Kevin andRenee Rudksi, who sold it toDave Kelly and Matt Hartley, inwhose hands the treasured barstill remains.

In the last few years therehave been some changes. Thepackage store was turned into asandwich shop which has sinceclosed. The new and wonderfulupstairs Cypress Bar has beenadded, featuring great bands. Thelong hallway is still there but it'sno longer the dreary, scary place itonce was. And bar seats are nolonger reserved. It's okay becausemany of the hippies who oncereigned there have passed away.

So, the Islander is an oldBeach bar with new perks. A littlebit of history I would not want tooverlook is one of the first bartend-ers, Nita Pace who served the baron opening day, wearing a topmade of real coconut shells and agrass skirt. Aaron always called herlittle Nita Pace although she wasvery tall.

How I would love to have the

space to record all the things Iheard and none of the things I didat the Islander, during the Age ofthe Aging Hippies at the Bar. I amsure there are members of the cur-rent regulars who don't even knowwhat a hippie is. On the Beach, itmeans you had a pony tail (maybeeven with beads in it), a great tan,t-shirt and shorts. There were spe-cial shirts for celebrating eventssuch as the night they shut thedoors at The Tiki, and mourningwas carried on for hours inside theIslander. They bore the message,"The year the music died," Remem-ber; there was no music at the Is-lander.

Actually, there has been onlyone significant change. That oldguard of folks who preferred drink-ing to working is gone. Every one,twenty-one or over, is welcome atthe Islander Lounge, which hasgraciously graduated into theTwenty-First Century.

Thank you, Dave and Matt, foropening your doors and hearts toall who thirst.

GREEN ACRES QUEENOur regal friend and former

Krewe of Nereids' queen Ella Hesshas vacationed so long in Iowa thather krewe has dubbed her theGreen Acres Queen. Although shemissed the Blue Angels, it was fora good reason. Ella was travelingby car to Canada, then on to NiagraFalls, with an additional stop inLaurel, Maryland. Ella will be onthe Beach for a quick two week visitin September to see all her friends.

TEXANS VISITChrissy and Mike Cook had a

houseful of guests during BlueAngels week. Their son, Mike Jr.and his wife Sheila from SpringTexas and Sheila's parents, LK and

Sandra McNeil from Houston weretheir houseguests. Mike, Jr. is aMajor in the Air Force Reserve anda pilot for Southwest Airlines, sohe really enjoyed the air show, ac-cording to Chrissy.

ZOO - KEEPERBeach gal Lois Hausmann is a

TRAVELERS RETURNPortofino residents Johnny

and Sandi Johnson are home aftera cross country drive from the Pa-cific Northwest. Johnny's careertook him away from the Beach foralmost a year and Sandi joined himfor the trek home. She loved thescenic route they took which in-cluded a stop in Rising Sun, Indi-ana to see her sister Barbara, butwas happy to be back on theBeach.

Pensacola Beach trivia playersare steeped in knowledge when itcomes to the Blue Angels. Playersfrom Atlanta and Hot Springs Villageto Navarre and everywhere in be-tween knew the correct answer tothe last question. Even PierMcMillan, six-year-old fan of theBlues who expects to be a Blue An-gels pilot when he grows up an-swered correctly, the F-18 Hornet, the Blue Angels plane, costs 21 mil-lion dollars. Although your reply wastoo late, good work, Pier. Keep onplaying.

Guess who no longer wants apink t-shirt because she finally wasthe first to email the correct answer?Yes, Sharon Mattair was the num-ber one this week. Bob Seitz fromArkansas came in second and thirdplace went to Dave Wheeler fromAtlanta. The Beach's Mike Cook fin-ished in fourth place. Marsha Y.Gustfasson also submitted a correctanswer.

STEP BACKWARD: Accord-ing to Sir Morrie Drees, Knight ofthe Trivia Roundtable, the correctanswer to the question concerningownership of the bar which becameKevin's en la Playa (Island Times,

July 2) is still Terry D'Alemberte. SirMorrie said he and fellow triviaplayers still believe the answerTerry D'Alemberte is correct. TheTrivia Master stands by the an-swer Donna Witt Nyberg, basedon the information from KevinEvans, who purchased the bar fromher. The Trivia Master does notstand by the highly inappropriateuse of the male gender in describ-ing the owner. That was dumb.Dumb. Dumber. We will now takea ten minute break while the TriviaMaster/Mistress leaves to scrapeegg of his/her face.

The boys of summer areswinging their bats and the girlsof summer are pitching their soft-balls this season. But they are notplaying on the Beach. Many yearsago, Bill Greene asked the SantaRosa Island Authority to build abaseball/softball field on the is-land. What reason did they givefor turning down his request?

The rules are the same. Sendyour answer to [email protected] with “trivia” in thesubject line. Please include yourname, phone number. The dead-line is 5 p.m., August 6.

Wine TalkBy David Griffin, Beach Wines and Liquors

Big Things Down UnderThe Shiraz grape came to Australia in the 1830s and has become thecountry's most widely planted grape. Noticeably similar to NorthernRhone Syrahs (the name by which Shiraz goes everywhere butAustralia), Australia Shiraz are big wines with rich, fruity flavors. One reason for this isthat Australian winemakers wait until the grapes begin to shrivel before they pick them, thereby concentrating their sugars and flavors. After that, the grapes are commonlyallowed to finish fermenting in oak barrels, where the grapes' tannins are polished to makeplush textures and the oak flavors are integrated into the finished product. The resultantwines, at their best, are big and resplendent with berry and sweet spice flavors.HINT: With its generous, fruity style, an Australian Shiraz makes a food-friendly dinnerwine when young.Moderate amounts of alcohol are supposedly healthy, so enjoy a good wine. BeachWines and Liquors, Inc. has available a wide array of wines from around the world, including the great Australian wines, and one that will be the perfect complement towhatever type of meal or party you are planning. We are very knowledgeable about thewines we carry so if you need assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. Come by and seeus at 5 Via de Luna or call 932-8850.

Lord, I've been red, white andblue tattooed! Okay, so it was re-ally stick-on tattoos.

Did you see all the true Is-landers return on Sunday for theBlue Angels? Being a true Islanderdoesn't require living on the beach;it's a special place in your heart thatswells with love and gratitude forjust being a part of this wonderfulcommunity. And as the skies filledwith thunder that Sunday, ourhearts were filled with joy.Courtney Winstead joined Bill andme for Friday's show and was im-pressed with our view. I couldn'thelp feeling a sense of pride andaccomplishment for what Bill and Ihave done in recreating our life onour little piece of leased Paradise.I give the praise and glory to Godbecause without Him we would notbe here at all.

On July 4th, our panoramicview had our heads swiveling andbobbling like those dolls you usedto see in the back windshield ofcars! The skies seemed to be infull bloom and there were more fire-works than we could even watch!

Congratulations to our new-est U.S. Citizen, Irma Watson, whofulfilled her requirements, com-pleted and passed her test just daysbefore July 4th. Irma and husbandJerry (Turk) just celebrated theirsixth wedding anniversary.

The SOBs decided that noth-ing would stop us from celebrat-ing Kim LoBue's birthday this year.Kim had the misfortune to be bornbetween July 4th and the Blue An-gels Show, which makes it prettytough to squeeze in another party. But the kidnapping was executedwith barely a hitch and we whiskedher away to Paulette Provost's per-fect patio for a surprise celebration!

Speaking of being surprised -Kim Schmitz finally joined us forour Wednesday Mental HealthNight. After Kim had been there forabout a half hour, someone saidGary Cole was sitting patiently inthe golf cart downstairs, while Ben(the dog) waited by the front door.Seems that Kim told Ben it was 'girlsonly' and he was not allowed. Kim

decided to stay a while, so Coleand Ben reluctantly left. Imagineour last surprise of the night whenGary returned bringing cocktailsand treats for all the ladies!

Bill and I will be celebratingour twentieth wedding anniver-sary. Seems like yesterday…..Happy Anniversary, Baby. I can'twait to see what the next 20 yearswill bring us!

This week's recipe comes from8-year-old Chef Isabel (Bela)Kennedy and her sister Briana whois a writer at age 10. So, written byBriana Kennedy - here it is….

"Hello people of Florida! Myname is Briana Kennedy. My sis-ter Bela and I stayed at our amaz-ing Aunt Lila and Uncle Jim Cox'shouse last month. Everyone at theBeach is so friendly and we alreadycan't wait to come back.

Bela and I would like to sharea recipe that we picked out. It'scalled a Parfait, but don't say the t.If you like Reese's peanut butterand Hershey's chocolate then thisis the treat for you. A Parfait isgreat to serve at parties, weddings, graduations and banquets. Youcan use it for anything. I'm surethe minute you taste the Parfaityour mouth is sure to water."

“The older I get the more I en-joy Saturday mornings,” started thestory of a thoughtful man. He indi-cated he had started to do his usualSaturday morning activities, but aninterruption brought on one of thosenever to be forgotten lessons. Itseems he was listening on his hamradio and came across an oldersounding man who was talkingabout ‘a thousand marbles.’

His voice and the storysounded so intriguing that he hadto stop and listen.

The intriguing voice said,"Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you'rebusy with your job. I'm sure theypay you well but it's a shame youhave to be away from home and yourfamily so much. Hard to believe ayoung fellow should have to worksixty or seventy hours a week tomake ends meet. Too bad youmissed your daughter's dance re-cital.” He continued, "Let me tell yousomething Tom, something that hashelped me keep a good perspectiveon my own priorities."

He began to explain his theoryof a thousand marbles. "You see, Isat down one day and did a littlearithmetic. The average person livesabout seventy-five years. Now then,I multiplied 75 times 52 and I cameup with 3900, which is the numberof Saturdays that the average per-son has in their entire lifetime. It tookme until I was fifty-five years old tothink about all this in any detail, andby that time I had lived through overtwenty-eight hundred Saturdays. Igot to thinking that if I lived to be

seventy-five, I only had about athousand of them left to enjoy. SoI went to a toy store and boughtevery single marble they had. I tookthem home and put them inside ofa large, clear plastic container righthere in the sack next to my gear.

“Every Saturday since then, Ihave taken one marble out andthrown it away. I found that bywatching the marbles diminish, I fo-cus more on the really importantthings in life. There is nothing likewatching your time here on thisearth run out to help get your priori-ties straight. Now let me tell you onelast thing before I sign-off with youand take my lovely wife out forbreakfast. This morning, I took thevery last marble out of the container.I figure that if I make it until nextSaturday then I have been given alittle extra time. And the one thingwe can all use is a little more time."

The author of the story saidwhen the story teller signed off, everyone was quiet. He said hehad planned to work on the an-tenna that morning, and then wasgoing to meet up with a few hamsto work on the next club newslet-ter. Instead, he went upstairs andwoke his wife up with a kiss, say-ing "C'mon honey, I'm taking youand the kids to breakfast." "Whatbrought this on?" she asked witha smile. "Oh, nothing special, it'sjust been a long time since we spenta Saturday together with the kids.

Hey, can we stop at a toy storewhile we're out? I need to buysome marbles....”

Q: How often should I run theDisk Defragmenter program?

A: If you are running it on aregular schedule then you areprobably wasting your time. Thepurpose of the Disk Defragmenterprogram is to keep your data filesorganized. The program onlyneeds to be used after significantchanges have been made to yourcomputer. For example, when youhave added or removed a largenumber of files, upgraded to a newversion of Windows, or installednew programs.

It may also be needed moreoften if your disk storage is morethan 85% full. (At that point you

might want to look at getting a big-ger disk.) On most computers, theDisk Defragmenter gives you theoption to analyze the disk. Theanalysis only takes a couple of min-utes and it tells you if you need tocontinue with the defragmentationprocess.

If you have never run the pro-gram, you might want to try it.Make sure that you won't need touse your computer for a whilethough, because it might takeabout an hour to complete. To lo-cate the program, go to your pro-grams list -- then to "Accessories"-- then to "System Tools".

For questions, contact Joe [email protected] or 206-3156.

Delusions BY MIKE WILLETT

Can you hear a rainbow shinning? Can you see a gentle wind? Can you touch a spirit talking with no beginning and no end?Can you walk among the clouds on a perfectly clear day?Can you smell a bright color or hear the wall that's in your way?Can you look at all the sounds that exist inside your head?

Can you feel the darkness coming orheal the wounds before they've bled? Can you live among the dying? Can you right the wrong you've done? Can you be your father's mother? Can you be your daughter's son?Can you stop and take a minute to reflect on who you are?

Can you jump the lake that's burning? Can you catch a falling star? The things we find impossible to obtain for us today. Are the things given freelyLet it go! Get out of your way

"It was great to have his as-sistance, since he and I togetherhad to drag the rather largeLaggerhead turtle on a tarp about300 yards back to the Gulf ofMexico," said Kirsten

Calling Kirsten at 850-232-3640 to report a turtle sighting isnot the only thing Beach residents

can do to be turtlefriendly. The adultfemales and thehatchlings are dis-oriented by brightlights and will notfind their way backinto the Gulf, soresidents are re-minded to keeplighting to a mini-mum until nesting

season ends in November. Here are some basic rules for

turtle-friendly behavior: Shut off or shield lights that

are visible from the beach. Closedrapes or blinds after dark. Use 25watt yellow-bug lights where ex-terior lighting is necessary. Avoidusing flashlights or fishing lanternson the beach. Fires are not permit-ted.

Remove beach litter. Bal-

loons, plastic bags, foam and othernon-degradable pollutants causethe deaths of many sea turtles whomistake them for food.

Quietly observe a nestingturtle from a distance. Do not shineany lights on or around her -- shemay abandon her effort to nest. Noflash photography. Stay behind theturtle so that she cannot see you.

Do not harass a turtle bytouching her or prodding her tomove. Stay out of the way as shecrawls back to the water.

Stack or remove beach fur-niture

Keep pets on a leash, awayfrom sea turtles and their nests.

Leave nest sites undis-turbed. If you find a hatchling wan-dering in daylight, place it on moistsand in a dry container, shade it andcall Kirsten Dahlen, immediately:850-232-3640.

Pensacola Beach Slowly Returns To Turtle Friendly Nesting Grounds

A female Laggerhead turtle begins her journey back to the Gulf of Mexicoafter digging a nest and laying eggs. Females return to the beach wherethey were born, so she is a native of Pensacola Beach. Nesting seasonlasts until November.

A 2008 hatchling takes his firstswim in the Gulf.

Ranger Kirsten Dahlen holds Loco, a Laggerhead turtle. The turtlehas been named Loco because he seems to be confused aboutwhere his habitat is located. The rangers arranged a free ride aboardthe Blue Water Adventures dive boat last week. They took him overa mile offshore and released Loco. Within hours he was spotted bykayakers headed back to shore. Just like the rest of us, he seemsto like living on Pensacola Beach.

T h e LIZZARD’S TONGUEby E.K. Hewson

Life is funny. Everyone alwayssays be careful what you wish for,it just might come true. It seems attimes we want what the other per-son has and then when we get it,we would give anything not tohave it. Well, sometimes.

I can remember when I at-tended my first Change of Com-mand ceremony, a time honoredtradition in the Marine Corpswhen one commanding officer re-linquishes command to his pre-selected successor. My hus-band, Harry, was then a first lieu-tenant and stationed at CampPendleton. We were seated in thecheap metal seats under the tent, but at least we were not in thebleachers roasting in the sun. Hisadvice to me was just do whatthe colonel’s wife does andyou’ll be fine. So I did. If shestood, I was instantaneously tomy feet. If she placed her handover her heart, my right handsprung to attention. If she gra-ciously fluffed her dress beforebeing seated, I tried not to tugtoo hard on mine before plop-ping down. Yet deep down, whenall was said and done, I wantedto be her.

Throughout the years, wewould attend many changes ofcommand. The ritual would soonbecome a memorized routine, butjust in case, I always did whatthe colonel’s wife did. After all,I’ve always been a firm believerin practice makes perfect. WhenHarry was a captain, I somehowmanaged to arrange my workschedule to attend these ceremo-nies. Sometimes I would changeout of my business suit and intomore appropriate attire while sit-ting in the squadron parking lot, especially if I was delayed bySouthern California traffic whichwas more often than not. Forsome reason, I can even remem-ber buying a maternity change ofcommand dress when I was eightmonths pregnant. I might havebeen a little slow on the stand-ing up and sitting down, and Imay have exchanged heels forflats by then, but I still attended.

By the time Harry pinned on ma-jor, I could balance a sleeping in-fant dressed in the tiniest flight suiton my hip, walk through the receiv-ing line, schmooze and be backhome before our son awakened.Timing was everything.

Before I knew it, Harry wasa lieutenant colonel and the op-tion of sitting in the cheap seatswas no longer available. Soon wewere receiving invitations withVIP parking instructions and ourseats were reserved with ournames: LtCol Hewson and Mrs.Hewson. Though still many rowsback from the seats of honor, Ifound myself a bit envious ofthose in front. It’s that feeling ofbeing upgraded from coach tobusiness class, but not quite be-ing placed in first class. Oh soclose and yet so far away.

And then, just like I hadwished for for all those years, ithappened. Two weeks ago, as myhusband gave up command, Ifound myself sitting in the frontrow, center seat with hundreds ofwell-wishers seated behind me.Harry and his successor, along withthe guest speaker and other digni-taries were positioned accordinglyon a raised stage. As I was escortedto my seat, I overheard someonesay, just do what she does andyou’ll be okay. What I would havegiven to be taken to a back rowseat, or even better the standingroom only section was starting tohave its appeal. I wasn’t ready tobe scrutinized by every young wifein the audience.

The ceremony lasted less thanan hour. It felt, however, like an eter-nity. But through it all I rememberedto do exactly what I was supposedto do from saluting the flag as itcame into my peripheral view tograciously accepting the arm of thefemale Marine who escorted me toand from the stage as I was given acertificate of appreciation for mySemper Fi spirit while my husbandwas in command. In the end, I thinkI even remember to fluff instead oftug. Thank you, Mrs. Connolly forteaching me that one.

Until next time…

The United States Marine Corps booth at CasinoBeach was a big hit during the Blue Angels AirShow on July 12 before the storms arrived. GulfBreeze’s Hunter McCloskey, 15, is showing hisstrength on the pull-up bar while Staff SergeantAdam Wenc, USMC, keeps count. Wenc, who isstationed in Pensacola, is originally from Pace,Florida.

Local artist Nina Fritz, left, and Amy Martin of Crab’sWe Got ‘Em were presented with personalized, autographed Blue Angels posters in gratitude fortheir support of the Blue Angels Wives’ Luncheon,July 10. Attendees were able to purchase NinaFritz’ poster of the Blues on the beach at the cham-pagne luncheon which was held upstairs onCrab’s gulfside deck.

If you really want to experi-ence the area waters and have agreat time, ultra light gear is the wayto go. Try rigging up the lightestrod and reel combo you can findwith four-pound test and hit thegrassbeds with your favorite jig. Anice small topwater BassAssassinin green is always deadly. Try a liveshrimp which should always bringthem runnin’. The fight you will getfrom the light gear will trip your jig. There is nothing like hookin' up aBig ol'Redfish on four-pound testline and battling him until you can'tsee straight.

Top area angler Trace Lewiswon a nice ultra light combo at theTexas Hold ‘Em 4444 Fun tables lastmonth and he cannot stop hootin'about the fight the fish are givinghim.

In area waters, Specks arehuge and if you hit the hole you'llhave the table full of fresh fillets.Good for you and saves your gro-cery money, too.

Capt. Darrin is spreading talesof massive Redfish catches alongthe grassbeds off the Island, butwill not divulge the location of thesecret spot he was driftingthrough. I think he was around BigSabine Point. That’s where I wouldgo. (Hint, hint.)

The Big Boats are bringing inthe bounty at Pensacola BeachMarina and I caught The LivelyOne II gasing up and cutting up amassive catch of Grouper, Snapper,

and a host of tasty others they har-vested in the Gulf.

Capt Ronnie and Pip are al-ways out on the Hog Wild and I’veyet to hear a bad story out of Pipthe deckhand. Go book your ganga trip. Do yourself a favor and gofishin.

Number one and two on mylist are THE most importantthings you should do for your-self, and for your performance. Isincerely suggest you will readand heed the following:

Sleep deprivation is not justa silent killer which may increasethe onset of heart disease, obe-sity, high blood pressure, and

diabetes, but it also is a “Perfor-mance Zapper” for competitivesports and especially women!

That’s right, and somethingto really think about. If you wantto compete at the top of yourform, and be the best team mem-ber you can be, it’s time to con-sider your own personal perfor-mance first. Allow yourself to geteight hours of uninterruptedsleep.

Want to know if you aresleep deprived? Answer thesequick questions:

• When you sit down at theTV or to watch a movie, do yougo to sleep almost immediately?

• When you lie down atnight, are you asleep by the timeyour head hits the pillow?

• Do you wake up in themiddle of the night, and stayawake for more than 8 minutes?

• Do you often wake up inthe middle of the night and haveto get up because you cannot goback to sleep?

• Do you get sleepy or tiredduring the day, often after lunch?

• Do you sleep a full 8 hoursof uninterrupted sleep eachnight, and sometimes 9?

• Do you get uncomfortable,or achy in your bed, and wakeup as a result?

• Do you have indigestion orother symptoms that wake you orkeep you from a peaceful sleep?

the mornings when you have toget up for your normal work ordaily schedule?

Sleep deprivation is a silentkiller. It quietly allows you to‘get by’ with these actions, andrepays you slowly with weightgain and internal damage, ofwhich the signs are minimal un-til serious damage is done.

In your Sleeping Environ-ment, make sure your room issoothing, and sleep inducing.Keep it quiet and dark. Regulatethe temperature of the room aswell as your personal bedding.Be mindful of what you eat anddrink prior to bedtime as well asthe level of activity. Slow downand relax. There are many thingsyou can do to make your sleeptime longer and more soothing.
