SUPERINTENDENT NEWS

The K-6 building project is scheduled for substantial completion on August 18, 2020. Pending Board of Education approval in March, the 2020-2021 school year will begin on September 8, 2020. This is a later start than normal because it allows for the completion of the new K-6 building and renovations to the high school for 7th and 8th grade. The calendar will be posted on the school web site once it is officially adopted.

Transition planning continues for the consolidation of students onto one campus next year. The district plans to have an auction on June 13, 2020 to sell classroom furnishings and other assets from the elementary and middle school campus. This means the high school campus will be the primary location for school activities starting in June. We ask that all students and residents visiting the high school this summer use caution when entering the parking lot. The parking lot is scheduled to be resurfaced in July and August which will affect traffic flow at times.

We have included several pictures in this newsletter from the interior of the new building as well as the Dianne Komminsk Center for Innovative Thinking and the Cardinal Booster Center expansion. Most of the metal stud walls are up and drywall is being finished in the K-6 building. The gym, multipurpose room, and main hallways have primer on the walls. The elementary and district offices have been painted and will be prepped for ceiling tiles in the near future. On the exterior of the building, installation of brick veneer and standing seam roof has made progress on fair weather days. We will continue to provide project updates at our monthly Board meetings and on the district website. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

ASBESTOS HAZARD EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACTS

(AHERA)

In accordance with the requirements of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act which was passed by Congress in 1986, this article serves as notification of the availability of a Management Plan designed to alleviate the presence of asbestos hazards from present school buildings.

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires schools to be inspected to identify any asbestos- containing building materials. Suspected asbestos-containing building materials were located, sampled (or assumed), and rated according to condition and potential hazard. Every three years, New Bremen Local Schools has conducted another inspection to determine whether the condition of the known or assumed asbestos-containing building material (ACBM) has changed and to make recommendations on managing or removing the ACBM. At the last inspection conducted on July 11, 2018, all materials listed in the Management Plan as asbestos- containing (or assumed to be asbestos-containing) were inspected.

New Bremen Local Schools has developed a management plan, as required, which has been continually updated. The plan has several ongoing requirements:

Publish a notification on management plan availabilityand the status of asbestos activities

Educate and train its employees about asbestos andhow to deal with it

Notify short-term or temporary workers on thelocations of the asbestos-containing building materials

Post warning labels in routine maintenance areaswhere asbestos was previously identified or assumed

Follow set plans and procedures designed to minimizethe disturbance of asbestos-containing buildingmaterials

Survey the condition of these materials every sixmonths to assure that they remain in good condition

It is the intention of New Bremen Local Schools to comply with all federal and state regulations controlling asbestos and to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure students and employees a healthy and safe environment in which to learn and work. A copy of the district’s Management Plan is available for review during normal office hours in the office of the Superintendent and the Principal’s office in the Middle School.

The New Bremen Kindergarten children and their parents have participated in a program titled "Project EASE" (Early Access to Success in Education). This program was created to join parents and teachers together to help get the children ready for the complex tasks of learning to read, write, and understand written work. It gives the teachers the opportunity to provide the parents with information on how to help their child at home. Session One was titled "Once Upon A Time" and covers story comprehension and retelling. Our second session, "Cracking the Code", focused on letter identification and beginning sounds. The third and final session, "Words, Words, Words", concentrated on decoding words and writing with KID spelling.

We would like to express our support for this program. We have seen good results. The children seem to be learning their letters and sounds and are feeling more confident using KID spelling to write their own thoughts. We feel the program is very beneficial. The children are excited to learn to read. They see us and their parents involved and excited, which helps to motivate them. Thank you to Mrs. Bev Poppe (our story teller), Mrs. Kramer (our Principal), and all of our parents who come and support this wonderful program!

As the year winds down, the children are excited to learn about the life cycle of chickens, visiting Make Believe Hospital, Easter, learning about good nutrition, making Stone Soup, looking forward to our end of the year picnic, and closing the doors one final time at this building!

ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The year is flying by and our time in the current elementary building is coming to an end. The students are working extremely hard and learning a lot of valuable skills in physical education class. They are learning things such as social skills, how to work as a team, how to compete, how to handle adversity, and the benefits of physical fitness on their overall health.

As we finish this school year we will be working on a lot of fundamentals that will help the students in their futures. We will be working on improving our gross motor skills as well. We’ve placed a big emphasis on being a good winner and also being gracious in defeat. The students have been terrific all year long and I’m super excited to finish this year strong!

SECOND GRADE NEWS

The second grade classes have had a busy winter, and we are welcoming spring.

On Monday, March 2, second graders celebrated Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading with partners and taking AR tests which allowed second graders to earn mileage to visit destinations across America. We are happy to announce that we reached our goal! Our second graders also partner-read with kindergarteners. It was a great day!

For the month of March, students will be participating in the Tournament of Books (March Reading Madness). During this time, students will pick the champion book from books chosen by 16 school employees. See the picture of the bracket.

Students are working towards earning a pizza party. To earn the party, we are encouraging students to read a variety of genres of books including fiction, non-fiction, mystery, sports, and biographies.

In Math, we have been adding and subtracting three-digit numbers, graphing, telling time, and will be measuring and learning about shapes and fractions. We continue to have addition and subtraction time tests each week. These facts are required to be mastered by the end of the school year in preparation for moving on to multiplication next year in third grade.

In Language, we have learned of the many types and forms of verbs and to use them properly in our writing. We incorporate writing into many subject areas. We have been writing research and informational reports.

In Social Studies, students worked very hard on researching a president, typing the report and timeline, and creating their president out of a pop bottle. We also have learned map skills, and students have created maps of their own towns.

Engineers from Allen County spoke with second graders about engineering. Students had an opportunity to participate in a state-wide poster contest. In Science, we have been learning about plants and weather and completed activities that go along with Severe Weather Week in March. Students will also be learning about the water cycle and life cycles of frogs and butterflies.

In April, the second graders will go on a field trip to the Auglaize County Courthouse and the Neil Armstrong Museum. We will also be visiting the fort at Ft. Recovery and the recycling center in Chickasaw.

We want to thank all the parents, relatives, and friends who visited our rooms on Open House night March 9. The students seem to be proud of what they accomplished, and we too are proud of them.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS

The fourth graders have been very busy reading, writing, and mastering their math skills! In Social Studies class, the students have proven themselves as successful entrepreneurs. After learning about the process of production and consumption, students developed a plan on how to sell their products. They applied their knowledge and talents and sold around 1000 chocolate covered pretzel rods. Profits from this project have been used to support the following causes:

Save the Manatee Ronald McDonald House Smile Train Make-A-Wish Foundation St. Jude Children’s Hospital World Wildlife Foundation

They have also learned about Ohio’s prehistoric and historic Indian tribes. They worked in groups to research one of the six Ohio tribes and designed a replica of their tribe’s village.

SIXTH GRADE NEWS

It is so hard to believe that we are into the last nine weeks of the year!! We have really enjoyed each and every student and will miss them as they move onto seventh grade. We are so proud of the leadership and perseverance the sixth grade students have shown inside the classroom as well as in extracurricular clubs and sports representing our school. It is always so amazing to watch them grow and mature from the beginning of the year to the end. You can be so very proud of them. We have asked a lot out of them in sixth grade and they met every challenge presented to them.

In science, we are finishing up our life science unit with genetics. They can now make a Punnett square, know their fingerprint patterns and created their own organism…what a busy few weeks! We will be ending the year with physical science. They will be studying the three states of matter, density, and motion. We will also be doing a second Engineering is Elementary unit on Chemical Engineering where they will create their own play dough recipe. Social Studies will see us traveling out of India and into China. Before we travel onward, the sixth graders will be doing an activity where they will be put into a varna (class) within India’s caste system. There, they will have to live the life of a person within that class. In China, we will travel the famous silk road to try and be the first group to trade all of our goods while trying to stay alive along the treacherous route. We will also be creating our own country and learning economics through the games Fetch! and Pit.

Language arts class has surely kept the students busy this semester – time is flying! We are preparing for State Testing by learning various test taking strategies and focusing on improving our typing skills by utilizing our Chromebooks for essays and projects. We completed informational and argumentative essays on various topics to prepare for the writing portion of the test. This year the students will type their writing compositions which will take focus, determination, and perseverance. Some highlights this nine weeks were creating our own Mythological God or Goddess and Mythological creature and learning how to state strong claims for argumentative writing and speeches. We are looking forward to completing our very first extensive research paper focusing on a social studies topic - the Roman Empire. We will connect this research as we transport ourselves to Ancient Rome through a historical fiction story. This will lead us into our final project of the year – the famous “Sugar Shock” project. We will learn about leading an active lifestyle and will make delicious, healthy, low sugar snacks to celebrate the end of the school year. I am so proud of the hard work of all students this year. Keep learning and growing!

Right now, in math, core one is finishing up the 6th grade standards and moving onto reviewing 6th grade and into the 7th grade material. Core two is getting started on our geometry unit and core three is finishing up their unit on probability. Everyone will be starting our March Madness project. In this project, we are looking at decimals, fractions, percents, probability, rates, and algebraic expression just to name a few items that will be covered in the project.

ELEMENTARY INTERVENTION

The school year seems to be flying by so fast! The students are all working very hard and learning many new things each day.

Second grade students are working hard in reading. They continue to develop comprehension and fluency skills. They are working hard writing extended response answers. They are reading longer texts and applying new skills to projects in the classroom. In Math, we have learned to regroup with addition and subtraction, make and read graphs, count money, and tell time.

Third grade students have worked hard to prepare for the Ohio tests in both Reading and Math. They have been reading short stories and answering a variety of questions to help prepare them for the tests. In Math, students have learned multiplication and have started multiplication time tests. They have learned many hints and tricks to multiply. Many of the students are participating in the after school program. This is a great way to help them become more comfortable and confident with the tests. A huge thanks to parents for all their hard work!

Have a great rest of the year, Mrs. Kelly Wilker

ELEMENTARY ART

It is hard to believe that Open House is behind us once again and we are into the fourth nine weeks already. I think every year slips away faster than the one before, especially this one! I hope everyone enjoyed the works we shared at Open House. The first graders are always excited to finally get to take their books home and share them with their family. I’m sure some older siblings may be able to pull out there books to show them too.

Currently the Kindergarten class is printing and practicing their painting skills. We will enjoy an Easter project during the fourth nine weeks also. First grade will continue to work with texture and get to do their “Rainbow Fish” painting. Second grade will continue learning about color and do a new painting using warm and cool colors. We will also make sure we have time to do our yarn weaving. The kids always love to do that. Third grade will get to do their animal print after we discuss Van Gogh and “The Starry Night”. Fourth grade has just finished some really impressive Notan designs. They will get to do their much anticipated clay project in the fourth nine weeks. Fifth grade will squeeze in their self-portrait project as well as one last clay project. Sixth grade will work with one point perspective and have fun with the art of Andy Warhol.

Of course, our current and future artwork will also be displayed in the halls for all to enjoy. I hope you get a chance to see some of it.

A new library automation system has been implemented which includes the online library catalog. We now use iSearch through INFOhio and have begun training students to log into their user accounts. Through their account they can monitor which library materials they have checked out, check on holds and any fines they may have. They can also build resource lists of print as well as electronic materials used for research. Links to the online catalog can be found on the library web pages of the respective buildings. If you would like to know more about iSearch or INFOhio you can go to www.infohio.org or contact me for assistance.

GRADE 7-12 PRINCIPAL NEWS

The fourth and final grading period of the 2019-20 school year is already here and state testing is quickly approaching. A great deal of effort has gone into preparing students for the upcoming testing including extra time spent outside of traditional school hours.

Every year, spring is the busiest time of the school year for staff and students. Currently, we are working through scheduling for next year’s courses, preparing for testing, working on scholarships, preparing for graduation, the ending of winter programs, and the beginning of spring extracurricular events. In addition to all of these things, students have actively been involved in several events outside of the traditional school setting. At the beginning of the month, the freshman participated in the Exploration Academy and juniors attended the Talent Connections Forum. Both of these events held at Wright State Lake Campus were to help students with career exploration as well as assisting them in making connections with area businesses. Lastly, our seventh grade students recently completed their STEM fair, where many innovated products were created and then judged by local engineers.

In addition to all of the amazing individual accomplishments we have seen this winter season from our sports teams, there are two individuals I would like to congratulate for their work in the classroom. I want to congratulate junior, Jared Bergman, for being the recipient of the Honda-Ohio State STEM Medal. I also want to congratulate senior, Hannah Kramer, for being New Bremen’s recipient of the Franklin B. Walter Award. Congratulations to both individuals!

The Class of 2020 will be missed for many reasons, but I look forward to watching these young men and women begin a new chapter in their lives. I wish them all the best of luck and encourage them to come back to visit whenever they have the opportunity.

Mr. Marcus Overman Gr. 7-12 Principal

As the end of the year quickly approaches, the seventh grade ELA students are working hard to prepare for the End of Course state test. We have been completing practice tests which include reading passages and writing prompts. Students have been given the opportunity to participate in one-on-one writing conferences where they have received personalized feedback on their response to the practice writing prompts. It is my hope that these one-on-one sessions will ensure a higher rate of success for students when it comes to the state test.

Aside from state test preparation, the students are beginning the final unit of study for the year. Unit four covers the essential question “Why is it essential to defend human rights?” In order to explore this essential question, we will be looking at a variety of fiction and nonfiction pieces that will allow students to consider and discuss human rights and the importance of protecting them now and in the future. Along with pieces from the textbook, students will also be reading novels in small literature circles. Each literature circle will have a different novel, but all of the novels address the essential question of the unit. At the end of the unit, each group will create a presentation based off of their novel. This presentation will address the historical context of the novel and include a discussion of literary elements covered throughout the year, of the unit question in relation to the novel, and of the group’s ideas about what can be done to ensure that all human rights are protected in the future.

JUNIOR HIGH HISTORY

Welcome to Junior High History. We have had a great year so far and look forward to finishing the year strong.

In seventh grade world history, our next two units will cover Europe’s Renaissance and Reformation and Europe entering the Modern Age. We will explore how the Renaissance differed from the Middle Ages and classical times, and examine changes in European life that led to the Renaissance. We will learn about ideas, problems, and growth. Eventually we will cover the age of exploration and the scientific revolution. If time remains, we will study philosophers whose ideas influenced the Enlightenment and discover new thinking about government and individual rights.

In eighth grade United States history, our next unit will cover before, during, and after the Civil War era. We will discover the deep division over slavery, visit battle grounds, and face the terrors and hardships of those who suffered through one of America’s bloodiest war. Then we move on to a unit that will cover the rise of industry, the Progressive Era, and America becoming a world power. We will explore innovations that transformed society. Also, we will investigate the problems in America and discover how social leaders propose to deal with them. If time remains, then we will link the past to the present.

We have done various activities, projects, role playing, movies, songs, etc. to enhance our Junior High History curriculum this year. As time allows, students have been able to look into current events from not only Ohio but from around the United States and the world.

HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNMENT

The high school government classes are working hard preparing for end of course testing and AP exams. The classes have been exploring the various types of questions that will be asked of them and refining their test taking skills. These standardized tests require students to do more than simply answer multiple choice questions and complete a few essay questions. The end of course government test will take place on April 21 and the AP Government exam will take place on May 4. In addition to preparing for these two tests, students have been examining Supreme Court case rulings and their connections to the amendments of the United States Constitution. These court cases are required for the AP class, but also serve as practical application of the amendments to real-life scenarios in our country. The students research the rulings of each case and, more importantly, the precedents that have been set as a result of those rulings. On Friday, April 17 the AP Government class will attend Municipal Court proceedings in Celina. Judge Kathy Speelman does a wonderful job each year of walking our students through the judicial process at the municipal level and taking the time during the proceedings to inform students of the rights of the accused and the responsibility of the court. Students in the past have given the trip to court high reviews. Many thanks to Judge Speelman and her staff.

Spring in Spanish class is exciting! We are reading novels, practicing our speaking skills, and incorporating lots of technology with each new lesson.

Spanish I will continue their studies on the Spanish Civil War, Picasso and Gaudi by reading our first novel, Agentes Secretos. With this novel we have incorporated many ways to use Chromebooks to enhance vocabulary acquisition. We have used Google Classroom,Webquests, Gimkit, Duolingo, Quizlet, Quizizz, Kahoot, and many songs of the week.

Spanish II is studying Guatemala and immigration while reading the novel Esperanza. We will also continue learning past tenses and sentence structures. Our final novel will focus on the history of baseball in the Dominican Republic. It’s a perfect book for welcoming spring and baseball season!

Spanish III is building their knowledge of Francisco Franco and Spanish history through the novel Hija del Sastre. Students are furthering their understanding of past tenses in Spanish, and are improving rapidly in their written and conversational skills.

Spanish IV just completed the novel Calaca Alegre in which we studied artists and neighborhoods of Chicago. We will end the year studying various artists and read one final novel.

All levels are currently preparing for Locura De Marzo, which is our annual spring music competition. Ms. Sarah Ross

FFA Holds Children’s Hospital Drive

In December, the New Bremen FFA Chapter held a Children’s Hospital Drive in conjunction with the K-4 students at New Bremen Elementary. The goal of the drive was to help provide the hospital with items that are on their top ten needed list for children at the hospital. Items that were collected included toys, coloring books, dolls, matchbox cars, blankets, and games. Mrs. Sims’ first grade class brought in the most items and was awarded with a donut and juice party provided by the FFA. As a result of the drive, the FFA was able to donate over 1,100 items to Children’s Hospital in Dayton. FFA members sorted through all of the items and recently delivered the items to the hospital. The chapter would like to thank all the students, parents, and teachers who helped make the drive a huge success this year.

FFA Celebrates National FFA Week

Chapter members celebrated National FFA Week from February 24 - 28. One of the busiest weeks of the year, members conducted a multitude of activities. The chapter conducted a coloring contest for the elementary students, provided lunch for the staff at New Bremen, conducted food presentations in class, and Drive your Tractor to School day. Furthermore, FFA members hosted a FFA Week Scavenger hunt throughout the school and put gifts in teacher’s mailboxes. Each day during lunch, members sold lollipops with proceeds benefiting the St. Paul’s Blessings Pantry in town. The purpose of FFA Week is to celebrate and emphasize the nation’s largest youth organization—the National FFA Organization and to publicize the nation’s number one industry—agriculture.

FFA Members to Receive Recognition at the State Level

New Bremen FFA members recently completed applications for the State and American FFA Degree along with officer books and proficiency applications. After a district, regional, and state evaluation process, we are excited to announce the results of the student’s efforts. Four members will be receiving their State FFA Degree in May at the State FFA Convention in Columbus. These members include: Liam Homan, Max Homan, Jessica Fledderjohann, and Ashton Ritter. In order for students to earn the State FFA Degree, they had to have participated in at least eight activities above the chapter level including two contests and two State level activities. Students had to conduct 25 hours or more of community service and have earned or invested $2,000 as a result of their Supervised Agricultural Experience Projects. Graduate members, Joanna Frankenberg, Jenna Heitkamp, Austin Brown, and Jacob Tangeman applied for the American FFA Degree and, pending national approval, will receive their American Degrees at the National FFA Convention in October. In addition to all the State FFA Degree Requirements, they had to complete at least 50 hours of community service and earn $10,000 or invested $7,500 in their Supervised

Agricultural Experience Project. In addition, Grace Wilker completed the chapter reporter’s book, Rachel Brown and Max Homan completed the treasurer’s book, and Jessica Fledderjohann completed the Secretary’s book. All three officers received a gold rating on their books and will be recognized at the State FFA Convention in May. Members Max Homan and Liam Homan participated in the Proficiency Award Program which recognizes students with outstanding SAE projects. Max Homan competed in the dairy placement award area and received a Silver Rating at the state level and fourth place in the district. On Thursday, March 26, 30 students from NBHS will board a bus to take an enrichment trip to the Fisher Theater in Detroit to see the musical Dear Evan Hansen. Representatives from the Junior District Leadership Team will also attend.

The show is a musical that effectively addresses depression, anxiety, bullying, loneliness, suicide, social media, viral videos, friendship (or the lack thereof), and the responsibility we all have to be there for each other. Students are excited for the opportunity to experience this Tony-award winning musical (6 awards, including best musical!).

The story takes place in a high school. It's the first day of school, and the main character, Evan, has no friends. Because he battles with depression and social anxiety, his mother has been taking him to a psychiatrist, who has recommended that Evan write positive letters to himself to help (hence the title). A video of the opening song really captures the way teenagers often feel: https://youtu.be/REIOnCTwjF0

Our students will be excellent representatives of our community, and they already take to heart the message from the cast of the musical (and their partners, Befrienders Worldwide, a suicide prevention organization) to reach out - and encourage others to do the same - to prevent suicide; we all need positive human connection for mental wellness. Check out their message at https://www.befrienders.org/

I encourage you to talk with these students about what they learned from the show. It will be truly powerful!

HIGH SCHOOL MATH

The AP Calculus students are beginning a unit on areas and volumes and also working hard to prepare for the upcoming AP Calculus AB exam on Tuesday, May 5. They are studying both multiple choice and free response types of questions and learning how to give the level of detailed reasoning required to earn a passing score on the exam.

The precalculus/trigonometry students are finishing up a unit on the graphs of all six trigonometric functions and applications of them to a variety of applied situations. Following this they will begin working with trigonometric proofs and the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines.

Foundations of College Math students are beginning the study of the trigonometric functions and applications of them to many real-life problems. The work the students have done over the course of the year will support them as they take college math placement tests and also serve as a strong base of math knowledge for their college math courses.

Mrs. Kathy Schmitmeyer

Well, it’s been a great year!

In the manufacturing lab, the Woods I classes have been finishing up their push stick and skills block and planning individual projects. The students in the Metals II class are gaining experience with the metal lathe and vertical mill to complete several basic skills projects.

FCA ROMER’S CATERING BBQ CHICKEN AND RIBS DINNER

FUNDRAISER

With another year getting closer to coming to an end, the New Bremen High School FCA has been holding meetings regularly for the 2019 – 2020 school year. Meetings are held every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. Meetings are held in the High School Library during 2nd CPT and began September 24. If we ever have delays or cancellations, meetings on those days are cancelled. Discussions are led by community members, Youth Pastors from the area, special speakers, coaches within our school district, or by the students. This year we have focused on the Ten Commandments.

Last year we gave out five scholarships totaling $1000.00 to our students with funds received through donations and the sales of Chicken and Rib dinners. This year we would like to do the same depending on the funds we have available. We will be selling Romer’s Catering BBQ Chicken & Rib dinners again to help us raise money for those scholarships. The sales of those will start on April 1st and run through April 15th. The dinners will be available for pick up at the school on Wednesday, April 22 from 4:30 – 6:00 pm.

If you would ever like to be a speaker to our group, know of someone that would like to speak, or would like to donate for scholarships that we award to the students attending FCA meetings, please email me, [email protected], or call the school and leave me a message. We are looking forward to seeing our FCA group continue to grow and see these students be able to impact NBHS in just one more positive way. If you have any additional questions about the types of topics discussed at an FCA meeting feel free to contact me at any time.

Junior District Leadership Club

"“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it." William Arthur Ward

One snowy day in December, students filtered into my classroom before a Junior District Leadership meeting; several kids were dis-cussing how cold the construction team looked while working on our new school building. Lead by JDLT president Macy Puthoff, the group decided to show their appreciation. Several students baked tasty treats, and they delivered the treats, along with warm coffee to the construction team. I am very proud that the members of the JDLT recognize that when we are grateful, optimistic, and kind, oth-ers will gravitate towards us. This is an example of true leadership.
