As noted in the February Reporter, the lodge had two hoop shoot winners advance to the State competition in Hawthorne Nevada held on February 15, Jillian Foster and Jake Wight. Unfortunately, neither will advance to the regional competition, however, I am proud to announce both came in second place in their respective divisions.

The lodge had extra monies in the Hoop Shoot budget and was able to purchase 12 referee shirts for future annual hoop shoot events. The shirts were on clearance for $3.95 and, although the only sizes were XL and XXL, the shirts will still be able to be used for forthcoming events if we all tuck our shirts in. Previously the lodge only owned approximately five referee shirts.

The Sweetheart Ball and Awards Dinner was held on February 14, 2020. I am pleased to announce Mike Stowell as the Elk of the Year. Mike exemplifies the Elk spirit in that, in time the selection committee has known Mike, none of us have heard a negative word from him. All his conversations are positive. Mike is generous with his time and his conversations are well thought out and interesting. Abbott. Donald, as a member of the Sparks City Council, was instrumental in

creating the Sparks City Council Senior Advisory Board. The advisory board is

tasked with researching and presenting topics related to seniors to the city

council. In addition to his work as a councilman, Donald sits on 12 City of Sparks

boards and advisory councils and, as a board member of the Sparks Heritage

Museum, Donald was able to help save Last Chance Joe and to have Last Chance

Joe featured on a DMV license plate.

Danny McGinley was awarded the Elk Officer of the Year for his continued support

of veterans and veteran programs to include the bimonthly poker game he helps

hosts at the VA Community Living Center, his work on Stand Down and the his

efforts to have the veterans brought from the Community Living Center to our

lodge for a monthly dinner.

On February 17, 2020, the lodge hosted an ice cream social at the Northern

Nevada State Veterans Home. Nine Elks and family members helped serve over

20 vets. Thank you to all who helped brighten President’s Day for our vets.

VET’S CORNER The Ice cream Social at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home was a great success and the Sparks Elks Lodge was very well represented. It was great to see so many volunteers turn out for the event. They will let me know when they are planning the next event. The Veterans are always so appreciative of what we do for them. Let's all give a big thank you to our active Military as well as our vets A reminder:: the Veterans will share our dinner on March 27th. So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.

Danny McGinley, Veteran’s Chairman

SPARKS ELKS LADIES - President's Message I am doing much better and will be getting my cast off on the 20th and will be really glad to be rid of it. I appreciate all your well wishes during this time. By the time you receive this Reporter you will have gone to the Sweetheart Valentine’s event. I hope that it was a great dinner and dance and congratulate the awards winners. The Elks Ladies decided not to take part in the voting polls for the upcoming election. After much research by Lucy, we felt it required too many hours and very long days of standing at the polls. We will have to find other ways to do fundraisers. It is time for the St. Paddy’s day corned beef sandwich making, along with the great tasting potato salad made by the SEL ladies. I’m hoping for great sales this year. Our Potluck for March 3rd will be pork sliders and all the fixings. Don’t forget that your dues will be coming up for the SELs. My time as President has almost come to an end and it has been a great year for me. I hope that it goes well for the next President also. I want to thank all the ladies that stepped up to be officers for 2020/2021. They will need additional help on some of the committees – please participate. Thanks again, DIANE NIELSEN, President Sparks Elks Ladies PERS CORNER St. Paddy's day sandwich event. This will take place on Tuesday March 17, 2020. Preparatory meeting will take place on Monday March 9th at 11am at the lodge. We will finalize phone people, packers ,slicers, salad makers and packers for the actual date. I really appreciate any and all help on this endeavor. We will shoot for 400 sandwiches this year as well. Price to stay the same as last year at $9.00 per sandwich.

Meeting Minutes

We cannot post Elk business in a public place. Since we rent out our building to the public, we

will no longer post Elk minutes.

The minutes of the previous meeting will be posted the day of the current meeting, for those

of you who wish to read them prior to the meeting. They will be posted on the board next to

the lodge door.

If at any time you want to make arrangements with the Secretary to read them other than

meeting nights, please give me a call.

Our Kitchen manager Ed Emerick has taken over the Kitchen bag for cooks.

If you are in need of it, Please contact Ed to make arrangements.

We have been working on years of paperwork as mentioned in the last newsletter.

Due to many new members, it was decided that we would take all the information for special

events and put them in binders. The binders hold activity reports, financial information and

any other pertinent information that would help a new chairperson plan an event.

Ron Rehn and Gary Dalton have completed this task. Thank you so much for your time and

organizational skills.

I will be in the office on Mondays 11am till 2pm and Tuesday10am till 2pm, if you need to

stop by. Otherwise you can reach me via phone. 916/956-0542
