Mary Ann Kantrow, President

The Paddock Happy New Year! As usual 2002 went by way too fast. I hope that 2003 won't go by as fast but I know that it will. I hope that everyone's Holiday Season went well and that all your wishes came true. Now it's back to work, and your club is already hard at work organizing fun events throughout the year. Matt Chapman is finalizing this season's dates for our Driver Education events. February 22 will be our annual Kart2Kart event. This is also a joint event with Motor-Stadt Region. Greg Steen organized this event and he is taking reservations. Contact him at [email protected] as soon as possible to reserve your spot. Matt Chapman also set up our Tech Session at Jeff Jones' shop (Automotive Techniques) for March 15. We plan to start at Noon and will provide some pop and munchies. In April we are planning a Rock Climbing event but the date has not yet been finalized . This is a great event for the kids as well as for the parents. All the details for this event as well as all the others can be found on the website. We held the Holiday Party with Motor-Stadt Region on January 18. Despite the very cold weather we had a great time. It was the perfect opportunity to get together with friends from both clubs after the long holiday break. The event was held at Oak Pointe Country Club in Brighton which provided great food and excellent service. Oak Pointe will be on our list for next year as a location and we will definitely combine the event with MSR again. I would like to thank all those who helped organize this event. Matt Chapman helped with the location. Sue Sarin handled all the invitations and the RSVPs. Burghard Linn took care of all the financial matters with ease. Lisa Sandau, Susan Roberts, Sue Sarin, and Dan Kantrow procured door prizes. With the merchandise from MSR we had almost enough prizes for everyone. In the next newsletter

we will have the complete list of suppliers who donated items. Hopefully this list will help you find your next supplier for all your Porsche needs. We had two special guests with us that evening. Denis Moore, our Zone 4 Rep along with his wife, Roberta, and Michael Green from Michelin who was available to answer all our questions about tires. John Lieberman of MSR put together a great slide show with pictures from our two regions from the past year. He also included some awesome pictures of Porsches from the web. With the help of these volunteers we were able to have another great event. Thank you again very much! If your New Year's Resolution was to get more involved with the club we have the perfect opportunity. We are looking for a newsletter editor. Currently Glenn Trapp, Joe Lile and Burghard Linn have been doing an awesome job with the newsletter but they are also performing other duties for the club and I don't want them to get burned out. Please contact one of these gentlemen if you have any questions about the newsletter editor position and would like to learn more. See you soon.

R a l l y S p o r t / M o t o r - S t a d t About 60 members of the Rally Sport and Motor-Stadt Regions (MSR) converged on the Oak Pointe Country Club in Brighton for their annual holiday party. The group expressed its appreciation to the organizers (see the paddock). Everyone enjoyed the fine dinner of appetizers, salad, rice, and vege-tables. The main courses of chicken, salmon, and prime rib were followed by Black Forest Cherry cake. After dinner, we awarded a large number of door prizes. The prizes included Porsche model cars, calendars, caps, clocks, calculators, shirts, and fleece blankets. Glenn Trapp capped off an enjoyable evening by winning the grand prize; an F1 racing wheel and tire. As members began to leave the party, Glenn and Claudia were discussing the relative merits of their F1 wheel on a 911, a

914, or in their living room. Stewart FreeStewart FreeStewart FreeStewart Free

Porsche Announces 911 GT3

by PCNA ATLANTA, DECEMBER 19, 2002 --- Porsche has revealed plans to introduce an ultra high performance version of its 911 Carrera Coupe sports car to the world mar-ket in the spring of 2003. The new model, named the 911 GT3, represents the most powerful non-turbocharged Porsche ever offered for street use in the United States and Canada. Based on the previous 911 GT3 that was not available in North America, the 2003 Porsche 911 GT3 features a 3.6-liter, flat- six cylinder engine producing 380 horse-power (SAE) and 285 pound-feet of torque. With a power output of an impressive 105 horsepower per liter, the engine propels the 911 GT3 from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, from 0 to 100 mph in 9.4 seconds, and to a top track speed of 190 mph. To handle this increased performance, the 911 GT3's transmission is fitted with transmission oil cooling and injection oil lubrication and has undergone some addi-tional reinforcements.

The most strik-ing visual fea-ture of the new 911 GT3 is its unique rear wing that is largely responsible for excellent direc-tional stability at high speeds and increased down-force for fast corning. Com-bining a redes-igned front apron, the GT3 achieves an out-standing drag coefficient

Page 7: Volume VIII, Issue 1 Winter 2003 - PCA

7

(Cd=0.30) for a car in its class. The GT3's han-dling is further enhanced by a sports suspen-sion, wider and lighter wheels, and wider tires. Front wheels are 8.5 inches wide fitted with 235/40 ZR 18 tires, and rear wheels are 11 inches wide with 295/30 ZR 18 tires. Brakes on the GT3 have been improved as well. Front brakes now feature six-piston, rather than the previous four-piston monobloc brake calipers and larger discs fitted with Porsche-patented cooling ducts. The ABS brake system was also modi-fied. The new system (ABS 5.7) has a faster and more sensitive control response. It is also lightweight and provides greater stability for ABS braking. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) discs, standard on the 911 GT2, can be fitted on request. Priced at $99,900 in the United States, the 2003 Porsche 911 GT3 will be in North American Porsche dealerships in May 2003. Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga., and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche vehicles for the United States and Canada. A wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 200 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, marketing and training for its 203 U.S. and Canadian dealers. They, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service.

LET OUR ADVERTISERS KNOW THAT YOU APPRECIATE THEM

What’s up with Porsche doing an suv? Is this a real Porsche? The tone of this question has come up repeatedly over the years. There was some initial resis-tance to the 911 since, “Real Porsches have four cylinders.” Then when Porsche took over the 914 project there was a cry of indignation over the VW four cylinder that conveniently forgot what it was that powered the 356. The 928 was ridiculed as a “Teutonic T Bird” with its anathema front engined water cooled V8. The 924/944/968 has often been held up to the same derision. After all, it was sup-posed to be an Audi. The evergreen 911 has even come in for it’s share of snotti-ness, especially since its recent switch to water cooling. There are some who say that the classic fluid lines were lost in the 70s with the flared fenders and whale tales that accommodated wider wheels, bigger brakes and intercoolers. The Box-ster is often treated as a stepchild by some clubs. Now comes the Cayenne. It’s a truck, for crying out loud. What’s often overlooked is that Porsche did what it did to stay in business. It is a small company that would be an attractive takeover target for a larger company, VW being the most likely. The 914 and 944 had so much invested that to drop them when VW and Audi bailed would probably have killed the company. Water-cooling the 911 was necessary to meet emissions regs. Now Porsche says its new truck is going to be sold out for the foreseeable future. If strong sales lets Porsche get back into motor sports and keeps R & D on the cars

going strong then I hope they sell a ton of them. JoeJoeJoeJoe

Review RSR Constitution and Bylaws and recommend the necessary changes appropriate for a “Civic League”. Approve spending up to $500.00 on legal/CPA consulting fees to help with the application. Discussion: Reasons, The IRS notified us in October 2002 that RSR never received Tax Exempt status. Two options needed to be fully investigated prior to making any recommendations. 1.) File as a “for profit” corporation and pay the appropriate corporate taxes. Or 2.) Apply for tax-exempt status now. Vote: Was passed unanimously by all board members present. To spend up to $500.00 for CPA/legal consulting fees. To pay the $500.00 application fee to apply for “Civic League” status. To make the appropriate changes in the RSR Constitution and Bylaws in accordance with receiving “Civic League” status Insurance: Gary Starin reported that he is still working with PCA to obtain D&O insurance informa-tion.
