Strengthening the Core

ENGR. MARICRIS C. VINES, ASEAN ENG

As our PIChE 2020 roadmap is about to reach its final year, we are continuously implementing programs and strengthening strategies to achieve the 2020 goals. The PIChE 2020 strategies are:

Promote membership and CPDInvolve and empower local chaptersChampion chemical engineer professional brandHeighten community serviceEnforce the chemical engineering lawNow, for us to reinforce these strategies, we have

to strengthen our identity in the core of sustainable development.

Purpose - we have to know what our purpose is. We are guided by the organization’s vision and mission and it is a must that every member of the organization knows it by heart. The Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers will continue to be the prime mover in promoting excellence in the Chemical Engineering Profession and Education by forging local and international linkages to establish itself as a globally recognized institution for Filipino Chemical Engineers.

Identify commitment level to the profession - Most of the time, we give importance on things that would just benefit us. Not only that, we would normally see certain situations in favor of our wants and needs. But did it ever cross our minds to know what must be our contribution to our profession? Another “I” that I can think of is for us to have intrinsic motivation. It’s a motivation that comes from within. You engage in an activity solely because you enjoy it and get personal satisfaction from it. I’ve learned this term from Bulacan Chapter President Engr. Chris Valerio. We should learn to have sincere and selfless contribution to the profession whether you are in the industry, academe,

and government. After that, you’ll be proud to say that you have fulfilled your commitment. Let us all be committed and become an inspiration to aspiring Chemical Engineers so we can all continuously lead and serve the profession as well as the organization.

Compassion and Respect - Freedom of speech gives us the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint. A platform, such as social media, is available for us to share our point of views and thoughts. Sometimes in our desire to prove that we are right and the best, we tend to forget to be respectful and be sensitive on what we say. Let us always try to assess the situation first and try to know where the other person is coming from. Don’t get mad or don’t get even. Be the better person.

Hear concerns and address issues - We let our members raise (if there’s any) their issues and concerns. Since the organization operates thru its local chapters, we encourage you to always reach out to your chapter first as it can be resolved within the chapter. Rest assured that chapter officers are always on the loop about the information that you have to know. Your national board is doing its best to protect the interest of members and the profession as well.

Encourage - We have more than 34,000 registered chemical engineers in the Philippines and as of now, only around 3000 are active members of PIChE. That is why we need your help to encourage our fellow Chemical Engineers to be a member of PIChE. As Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

Let us strengthen our core, move forward and make the Chemical Engineering Profession significant across the world.

ChE Week 2019 CDOBY ENGR. JOCEL B. DIMACUTAC

As a celebration for the 14th Chemical Engineering Week with the theme “Strengthening the Chemical Engineers’ Identity in the Core of Sustainable Development”, PIChE-CDO prepared programs for both Chemical Engineers and students to participate and cultivate our connection with the community and the profession.

ChE Week 2019 opens up with a noon mass and soon followed with a formal opening at Xavier University. Both students and professionals attended the activity which was concluded with a quiz bowl for the Chemical Engineering students.

On the morning of September 17, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10) and Junior Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers – Xavier University (JPIChE-XU), the chapter conducted the annual activity called GUNA which is an eco-movement on the sustainable management of solid waste at Pinikitan Creek, Cagayan de Oro. The professionals, the students, the barangay officials and the citizens living nearby brought their cleaning tools and helped in freeing the creek from the garbage that has been floating and lurking in the area. Throughout the years of conducting this activity, it was observed that the group attending this activity is increasingly growing and the garbage in the creek slowly decreased. This year, not only did the DENR-10 helped but as well as the barangay officials and citizens.

Hopefully this would encourage the people living in the area to properly dispose their wastes and open everyone’s eyes on the importance of proper waste disposal.

Now on its third year PIChE-CDO conducts the PAKIGSANGKA 3.0, a competition that is open to all bonafide senior high schools in the province of Misamis Oriental under the General Academic track – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand. The activity was held at Limketkai Mall Activity Center with the intention of promoting Chemical Engineering to the soon to be college students. There were ten senior high schools who participated in the event. The second runner-up belonged to Gusa Regional Science High School - X. And after a couple rounds of tie-breakers, the first runner-up went to Corpus Christi Senior High School - Macasandig Campus, leaving Xavier University Senior High School to successfully defend their winning title in PAKIGSANGKA 3.0.

On the last day of the celebration, the chapter conducted a CPD

seminar on September 21 with the title Seminar on Toxic Substances and Hazardous Waste Management in the Philippines and Drug Delivery Using Green Materials at Philtown Hotel, CDO which was attended by 40 Chemical Engineers and Students. The speakers who enthusiastically shared their knowledge and experience were Engr. Dahn Suan of the Environmental Management Bureau Region 10 and Engr. Rodel Guerrero, Ph.D. of MSU-IIT. After which, the Chapter conducted the Mr. and Ms. PIChE-CDO where Engr. Noemar Nash Nuñez and Engr. Kathrina Ragpala won the crown respectively.

To further nurture the relationship between PIChE-CDO and JPIChE-XU, the chapter attended the closing activity of JPIChE-XU’s Trivia Wars where the chapter participants won the second place. With the ChE Week ending, both professionals and students gained knowledge, found new friends and acquired inspirations to become better Engineers and contribute on the development of the profession and the society.
