HVAC program aims to meet industry demand for workers Program designed to train young adults as HVAC technicians and professionals 

  With  growing  demand  for  technicians  and temperatures  averaging  greater  than  100  degrees  for  three  or more months  annually, industry  representatives  unanimously  agreed the East Valley Institute of Technology should add a Heating, Ventilation and Air Condition‐ing (HVAC) program to help train and develop tomorrow’s workforce.   

“The need for trained technicians and industry professionals in Arizona is continuing to grow and many companies are actively seeking workers to replace those who are get‐ting  ready  to  retire”  said  Janice  Parker,  director  of  partnership  development  at EVIT.   “There has been a  tremendous outpouring of support  from  the HVAC  industry wanting to help and get involved.”   

Beginning in August, EVIT will offer training to high school students tuition‐free during their  junior and senior years.   The course will teach the basics of HVAC  in a hands‐on lab space created specifically  for  this career path.   HVAC  training  is also available  for tuition‐paying adults through the EVIT School of Adult Education.     

In early‐January,  an  advisory  council made up of  representatives  from  local  and na‐tional sheet metal shops, residential and commercial air conditioning companies, trade associations and industry alliances was established.  Members have been instrumental in helping develop an instructor job description and course curriculum and solicit dona‐tions.    EVIT has  already  received  thousands of dollars worth of new equipment,  re‐cently  released  from market  testing,  from  various  vendors  and  the Air Conditioning Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).   

"EVIT will be a world‐class facility and training opportunity for young adults looking for a rewarding career in a growing industry” said Mike Nipper, Regional Sales Manager for Emerson  Climate  Technologies  and  chairman  of  the  HVAC  Advisory  Council.  “By working side‐by‐side with key employers in the Valley, the program will not only be dynamic and enjoyable, but one that will prepare students to take the HVAC  industry into the 21st century."

Students attend EVIT half‐day and upon completion of the two‐year program can choose  from a variety of career  pathways.    Entry‐level  positions  in  the HVAC  industry  typically  average  between  $12  and  $15  per hour.    School  officials  are  also working  to  find  a  community  college  partner  to  establish  an  articulation  agreement that will provide students the opportunity to earn college credits toward an advanced degree.     Registration  is  currently underway  for  the  2012/13  school  year.    For more  information,  including how  to  apply, visit www.evit.com or call 480‐461‐4000. 

EVIT raises money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Students and teachers participated  in a walk‐a‐thon on March 5th and 6th to raise money  for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).  This fundraiser was coordinated by HOSA students and teachers as a National Service Project.  EVIT raised more than $6,000 for the cause through pledges and the sale of water bottles.      Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is one of the largest student organizations in the country. It partners with different healthcare‐oriented nonprofit organizations and chapters  lead volunteer and  fund‐raising efforts on its behalf.  Last year, EVIT was recognized as the top school in the nation raising more than $12,000 for JDRF.

SkillsUSA pilot for Aesthetics Aesthetics hosted  the  first pilot  for Arizona State SkillsUSA on March 5. Students were  judged and evaluated on basic facials,  facial  massage  and  makeup  application  including  lashes.   Congratulations  to  the  winners:  Erica  Ryu  Price  (1st),  Alexa Schneider (2nd), and Elaine DelVecchio (3rd). You represented EVIT proudly and professionally and impressed the judges with your great skills!   

Presentation focuses on driver safety   The  3rd  Annual  EVIT  Teen  Driving  Safety  Day  was  held  on March 7. Special  thanks  to Early Childhood Education and  the Mesa  Police Department DUI  Task  Force  for  helping  educate EVIT students about underage drinking laws, DUI enforcement, drugged/distracted  driving  laws  and  the  legal  consequences through guest speakers and visual displays.    

 

Construction program tours Adelante site  EVIT Construction Technologies students toured the grounds of the new Adelante Healthcare Clinic  located on  the EVIT Cam‐pus. Students will be  learning about each stage of the process and  the  state‐of‐the‐art  public  health  center  is  scheduled  to open October 2012.  EVIT health and nursing students will soon have the opportunity to complete required clinical hours with‐out leaving campus!   

 

Rotary Student of the Month Culinary student Sam White was named the East Mesa Rotary Student  of  the Month  for March.  Sam  is  a  senior  at Dobson High school and recently won a $80,088 scholarship to attend the Culinary Art Institute of Phoenix. He  is also an "A" student at EVIT and has perfect attendance this year.  Way to go Sam!   

PMT students excel in variety of areas Brett Wager, a second year student and  intern with Able Engineering, won the gold medal  in the Precision Machining at SkillsUSA. Devin Roberts, a second year student who displays excellent work ethic, ability and attitude, began an  internship with Able Engineering as a trainee machinist and  is on his way to a successful and profitable career as a machine tradesman. A third PMT student, Jared Potter, modeled for the EVIT Fash‐ion Show.  He did an excellent job, made new friends and may even have a future career on the catwalk!

EVIT Culinary students net $122,725 in scholarships  Culinary students from the East Valley Institute of Technology won scholarships totaling $122,725 at the an‐nual Careers in Culinary Arts Program (C‐CAP) competition held on March 17, 2012.    The EVIT scholarship winners (all seniors) include:   Anne Chung (Corona Del Sol): $2,000 C‐CAP Education Scholarship to school of choice   Chelsey Hacker (Apache Junction): $5,000 to Scottsdale Community College   Calena Srutowski (home schooled): $14,000 to Arizona Culinary Institute (1/2 tuition)   Brandy Pennick (Apache Junction): $21,645 to Art Institute of Las Vegas (1/2 tuition)   Sam White (Dobson): $80,080 to Art Institute of Phoenix (full bachelor’s degree)     Additionally, junior Courtney Clardy (home schooled) won a scholarship to the summer explorer program at Le Cordon Bleu and a junior membership to the American Culinary Federation (ACF).

Skills USASkills USA  EVIT students capture 27 medals at SkillsUSA 

 Students  from  the  East  Valley  Institute  of  Technology participated  in  the  Arizona  State  SkillsUSA  competition on March 27 at the Phoenix Convention Center.    Of  the  110  students  competing,  27  were  awarded  medals  in  14  different  career  and  technical  education programs including 10 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze.   Gold medalists at  the  state  level will  travel  to Kansas City  to compete  for  national  titles  June  23  to  27  at  the  48th  annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC).  EVIT students receiving medals at Arizona SkillsUSA include:

Facilities UpdateFacilities Update  A day in the life of an EVIT maintenance technician Submitted by Greg Vincent & Travis Wilson  

Contrary  to what  is  shown many  times  in  the movies or TV shows,  EVIT  maintenance  staff  doesn’t  have  time  to  sit around and play cards, twiddle our thumbs, stare each other in  the  face or anything else  to waste  time while waiting  for something to break, a call to come in, or the time clock to tell us to go home.  Like everyone on the EVIT campus we are very busy! Here are a few things that perhaps you didn’t know that your mainte‐nance staff takes care of:   General plumbing – This includes replacing pipes under a 

sink,  changing  valve  stems  in  a  faucet,  replacing  a  sole‐noid in one of our many automatic sinks, replacing batter‐ies in our automatic sinks and toilets, and much more! 

General  electrical  –  This  covers  changing  light  bulbs  of various  sizes  and  shapes,  replacing  ballasts,  replacing  a wall receptacle, running a new circuit and even replacing a switch on a vacuum cleaner! 

Set‐up Crew – Maintenance sets up for most events that take place around campus except culinary. For example, EVIT Expo is not only a lot of planning of the teachers and other  staff,  think  about  how  all  those  extension  cords, tables, and trash cans distributed around campus! 

Drywall/Painting – Got a hole in a wall? Yup, we fix those too! Once  the patch has been blended  in and smoothed out  it gets textured (the design on our walls  is called Or‐ange Peel) then painted. 

 The  items  listed  above  do  not  include  the  preventative  maintenance (PM) work orders or simply the maintenance of our  equipment  so  that  it  lasts  longer.  Some  of  these  items include changing fan coil filters, greasing bearings, maintain‐ing golf carts, servicing hot water heaters and more!  For all of  the work  to be completed and appropriately scheduled,  it needs  to be prioritized.   We get a  lot  different  requests at  the  same  time. For example,  if a work order was put  in  for a  sink  in a  restroom not working it would get a higher priority than say a cabinet lock that isn’t working or a light bulb that went out. And of course, on top of all of that, we have to schedule time to change filters and other stuff.  So, whether  it’s adding salt to culinary & cosmetology’s water softeners, changing bearings  in a fan coil, or even working on a door lock, you can say that we are a very busy department!

The 3rd Annual Neuron Challenge for Human Anatomy & Physiology (MC10) students was held in March. Students were judged on their creativity and use of unique items to build models. The winners from left to right (above): Grand Prize to Josh Ryerse and Kendall Day (McShane), 1st place to Dylan Thomas and Sophie Newsom (McShane), 2nd place to Kelli Altoff and Melissa Nunez (McShane) and 3rd place to Ana Venegas, Aldo Aguilar and Efrain Ramos (Howell).

Representatives from the U.S. Forest Service (including an EVIT alumni) presented to Fire Science students about  wildland firefighting.  Students also had the opportunity to try out the gear and learn how to operate a pump. 

Massage therapy students learned about  "Elder Touch" and massage techniques specific  to the senior population from a guest speaker.  

Cosmetology students jump for joy over the  opportunities ahead and show that you can participate  

in extracurricular activities and attend EVIT!

EVIT students and instructors attended the Phoenix‐Mesa Gateway Airport Open House and  talked with prospective students and community members about the Aviation program.. 

The 7th Annual EVIT Fashion show was held on March  27  in  front  of  a  sellout  crowd.    Second year students competed for more than $5,000 in scholarship money.   Congratulations  to  the  winners:  1st  place  to  Aubry  Stitt  (Corona  Del  Sol)  for  "Sky  Inspiration,"  2nd  place  to  Taylor  Corr  (Red Mountain)  for  "British  Punk"  and  3rd  place  to AnaMaria Segura (Mesa) for "Columbia."

The East Campus held a blood drive with United Blood Services.  A total of 34 lifesaving donors  stepped up to help ensure that blood is available for patients in need.  Way to go! 

Interior Design students traveled to New York City for an educational yet action‐packed trip.   They looked at architecture, visited design colleges such as Pratt Institute, FIT and Parsons  

New School of Design, toured Radio City Music Hall and walked the Brooklyn Bridge.

In  a  partnership  with  Valley  Metro,  the  EVIT  Trip  Reduction  Program  is  designed  to  reduce  single  occupant vehicle (SOV) trips to the work site.   

If  you  carpool,  vanpool, walk,  bike  or  ride  the  bus  to school  you  are  considered  an  Alternate  Mode  User (AMU), and you can register to win quarterly prizes val‐ued at $25.
