How are we already in August?

Broadway has rolled through most of

the summer, and that means that we are

busy gearing up for a full slate of fall

activities! Most Christian Ed classes,

and certainly our worship services,

continue through the summer months,

but there is always a freshness to the

beginning of fall activities—like taking

the wrappers off those new school

supplies!

Our youth will get the transition to fall started with a

new end-of-summer gathering called the Summer Send-

Off on August 15. Broadway’s youth in grades 6-12 will

meet at the Mulberry Grill in Rocheport for wood-fired

pizza, games, a campfire and worship. See page five for

more details.

To prepare our new kindergartners for their move

from the Preschool Wing to the very big space of the

CLC, KinderPath orientation will take place on Saturday,

August 22, from 10:00 a.m.—noon. See the related

article on page five for details.

Sunday, August 23, is our official Move Up Sunday.

With Columbia schools beginning class on August 18,

Broadway’s children and youth will also advance to the

next grade level for Sunday School classes. And a new

tradition begins—at each worship service, children and

youth will be invited to come forward for a Blessing of

the Backpacks—a prayer for a good school year for all!

Immediately following 11:15 a.m. worship on August

23, Broadway’s youth will hold a

Car Wash to raise funds for their

2016 Boys’ and Girls’ Retreats.

Cars will be washed in the north

parking lot (behind the CLC) until

4:00 p.m. All donations are

gratefully accepted.

A long-standing Broadway

tradition is also scheduled for

Sunday, August 23. The Ice

Cream Social will begin at 3:30

p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. If you missed the Youth Car

Wash because you attended an earlier service, come a

little early for the Social, get your vehicle in line to be

washed, and come in and enjoy a little homemade ice

cream while our youth wash away! You are invited to

share your own homemade ice cream with others, or to

bring a baked treat to share. Connections Ministry will

provide vanilla ice cream, ice cream toppings and drinks

for this fun and tasty afternoon of fellowship. There is no

2 ON BROADWAY…. with Pastor Tim Carson

As the church staff finalized the

calendar for our fall schedule right up to

Christmas, we were left breathless; what

a rising tide of ministry, learning,

worship and service ahead of us! By

mid-August, schools will be back in

session, dormant church groups and

ministries restarted and new initiatives

budding. This will be a fall to remember!

Our fall worship series will be

“Growing in God” and will travel the road of spiritual

practices and ministries that are life-changing and world-

transforming.

We will have three special guests appearing in the next

few months: Dr. Rita Brock of the Soul Repair Center of

Brite Divinity School will be the keynoter at our Gateway to

Hope event September 22 and the focus area is “moral

injury” and healing the wounds of war. When Dr. Joretta

Marshall, Dean of Brite Divinity School, delivers the Stalcup

Lectures on October 17, she will address the subject of her

long- researched topic, “Forgiveness.” She will also be our

preacher in worship October 18. And then on the first

Sunday of Advent, November 29, the Director of Week of

Compassion, Rev. Vy Nguyen will be our special pulpit

guest. As Vy was a refugee from Vietnam when a small

child, he has a very strong sense of our need to minister at

the point of greatest human need.

As 2015 is the centenary of spiritual writer Thomas

Merton, at least two groups will be reading

and reflecting on his works throughout the

year. The Pastor’s Book Shelf and a

Sunday morning elective class will both be

reading and discussing Merton. We are

planning to take a spiritual pilgrimage to

Gethsemane Abbey in Kentucky, Merton’s

Abbey, at the conclusion of the year with

Merton.

It is our hope that some of our groups

and classes may key off these speakers and series in their

own study and reflection. Two of our presenters have

books that many will want to read in advance of their visits

with us. Rita Brock’s book is Soul Repair and Joretta

Marshall’s book is How Can I Forgive? The Sunday

morning worship series, Growing in God, and the

Wednesday evening Men’s Bible Study will both be

following the book of James, and our study resource will be

N.T. Wright’s commentary by the same name, James. The

Thomas Merton reading groups will no doubt include his

classic spiritual autobiography, The Seven Storey

Mountain.

Whoever you are and however long you have been

engaged in serious Christian growth, this fall provides an

opportunity for you to plug into serious and life-changing

reflection, study, prayer and service. As this summer

comes to a close, please consider the ways you can place

your spiritual life at the top of your priority list!

Judy Saliger, long-time Broadway staff and church

member, will leave the Broadway staff on August 12. Judy

and her husband, Bill, will move to Raymore, a suburb of

Kansas City, to be near their daughter, Katie.

Judy has served as the Administrative Assistant in

Children’s Ministry for seven years. Before becoming a

Broadway staff member, Judy was an active volunteer in

Children’s ministry, serving in many important roles,

including the very big job of

directing our Vacation Bible

School. Judy has also

sung with the Ensemble

since its beginning.

We will miss her sweet

smile, gentle spirit and

lovely voice. Blessings to Bill and Judy on their move to

Kansas City!

3 Calendar Highlights

Last Sunday, Pastor

Tim shared the tragic

story of a friend’s son—a

combat veteran at the

age of 23—who had

committed suicide. The

numbers of combat

veterans who are ending

their own lives is equally

tragic, numbering 22 a

day. Many other

returning veterans

engage in self-

destructive behaviors

that results in chronic unemployment, the loss of family and friends,

substance abuse and homelessness.

On September 22, Broadway will host a day-long workshop which will

pull back the curtain on this disturbing trend. Dr. Rita Brock, the founder of

the Soul Repair Center at Brite Divinity School, will be the featured speaker

at the Gateway to Hope: Bringing Our Veterans All the Way Home

workshop. Broadway’s Service Ministry is the sponsor of the workshop in

conjunction with the Mid-Missouri Partners in Continuing Education.

Registration, which includes a luncheon, is $40. Veterans and their family

members may register for $25, and Broadway is providing ten scholarships

for veterans. The workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration, and end

at approximately 4:00 p.m. The workshop will include opportunities for

interaction with Dr. Brock and other participants, as well as a time for

questions.

Dr. Brock was raised in a military family, and is an internationally-known

lecturer and award-winning author. Her two most recent books are Soul

Repair: Recovering from Moral Injury After War, and Paradise Lost: How

Christians Traded Love of This World for Crucifixion and Empire. Dr. Brock

is Research Professor of Theology and Culture at Brite.

Registration information and brochures are available in the church

office, all Welcome Centers and the Broadway website. Anyone who is a

veteran, knows a veteran, or is a family member of a veteran is

encouraged to attend the workshop. Please contact the church office at

445.5312 with any questions.

Dude! Beach Party VBS Was Totally Awesome! Sometimes everything in nature cooperates to

produce a giant wave, and that’s exactly how last week’s

Beach Party Vacation Bible School worked out! 97

children (including 11 from the Burmese congregation

that meets in our lower level each Sunday), 102 adult

and youth volunteers, $1077 raised to save sea turtle

habitat, Tim and Nick in grass skirts—it just doesn’t get

much better!

And in the midst of all of the fun and friends at VBS

were lessons and scripture from the Be-Attitudes: Be

Kind, Be Obedient, Be Forgiving and Be Bold.

Thank you to all who participated and

volunteered!

Here we are already in August,

which means that the beginning of a

new school year is less than three

weeks away!

This year, Broadway’s youth will

say farewell to summer and hello to

another school year a little

differently—with a Summer Send-Off

at the Mulberry Grill in Rocheport on Saturday,

August 15, from 6:00-10:00 p.m. The Grill is located

just off the Katy Trail in Rocheport, at 101 Howard

Street and is owned by Broadway members Bruce

and Janice Henson, along with their son. The Grill is

known for its wood-fired pizzas and gorgeous setting.

Broadway’s youth will be treated to the Grill’s

exceptional pizza, games, music and s 'mores. After

sunset, there will be a campfire and closing worship.

And there is no charge for this fun (and delicious)

event!

Car pools from Broadway will be arranged prior to

the Summer Send-Off. If you have any questions,

please contact Jennifer Barb at

[email protected].

Broadway’s Christian Life Center is a big place,

particularly if the only Sunday School classrooms you

have know are in our cozy Preschool Wing. For those

who will be entering kindergarten this fall, and

transitioning from our Preschool Wing to the CLC,

there is KinderPath on Saturday, August 22, from

10:00 a.m.-Noon.

KinderPath is a two-hour orientation to Broadway’s

Pathways rotational model Sunday School program

for elementary-age children. New kindergarteners

and their parents will see where all the groups meet

on Sunday morning, how to follow the signs to find

your child’s classroom and how our rotational model

works.

Please contact Barb at 445.5312 or

[email protected] to rsvp.

Pathways Guides and

Teachers Needed What are you doing on Sunday mornings between

10:10-11:00 a.m.? Guides and teachers are needed for

our Pathways children’s Sunday School program. The

wonderful thing about volunteering for Pathways—other

than working with some amazing children—is that you

can choose to teach a five-week module, and then take

a break! Or, if you would prefer to serve as a Guide,

you can team up with a partner to work out a serving

schedule for the school year.

Volunteers are also needed to serve as Shepherds

for KidzWay during 9:00 a.m. worship and to help in the

Nursery during the 10:10 a.m. Christian Education

hour. If you can help with any of these positions, or

would like more information, contact Barb at

[email protected].

6 BROADWAY MINISTRIES Wednesday Night Live Returns August 26 With the beginning of school, comes the return to

“routine.” But there is nothing routine about Broadway

youth and Wednesday Night Live—every week offers

a new way to experience God’s love!

On August 26, Wednesday Night Live returns.

Once again, Service/Mission and Outreach Ministry

will provide a fellowship meal for youth at 6:00 p.m.,

and an earlier option at 5:30 p.m. (beginning

September 9) for adults who are participating in Bible

study classes or Chancel Bells. Broadway’s Chancel

Choir will return to rehearsals on August 19, and all

choir members are welcome to join the youth for dinner

beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Youth activities get underway at 6:30 p.m. following

the meal. Middle school and high school groups will

alternate between planned activities and gym time.

Once again, youth will participate in service, fellowship,

worship and small groups during the course of the

school year.

Wednesdays will be busy at Broadway—bring your

student to youth group and join us for a fellowship meal,

or just come to enjoy the food and company. All are

welcome!

Whenever the occasional fifth Sunday falls on our

calendar, Broadway collects a Noisy Offering. The

Noisy Offering is aptly named, since a coffee can is

passed between the pews and only loose change is

collected. The offering is designated for a particular

outreach ministry.

Our next Noisy Offering will be collected on August

30 at each worship service. Service/Mission and

Outreach Ministry (MOM) has earmarked this month’s

offering for Coyote Hill Children’s Home. Coyote Hill

provides care for abandoned, abused and neglected

children in a loving and Christian environment. Coyote

Hill was established by the McDaniel family in 1991 with

one home for children. In 2014, Coyote Hill completed

construction on its fifth home. Service Ministry is proud

to support this important and much-needed shelter for

children.

Save That Change—Noisy

Offering Is August 30

Broadway’s Spirited Singers will soon begin their

second year of sharing music and enjoying fellowship,

and you are invited to join them!

The Spirited Singers is a group Broadway seniors

who enjoy singing and sharing the gift of their songs

with others. The Singers will begin their new year of

rehearsals on Monday, August 10, at 1:00 p.m. in the

Music Center. The group will choose music for their fall

and winter program and rehearse their selections at this

meeting. After several weeks of rehearsal, the Singers

will take their program to area assisted living facilities.

If you enjoy singing and would like to be a part of the

group, please contact Marilyn McCreary at

573.268.4876. Many group members carpool to church

and to performances, so please let her know if

transportation is a concern for you.

Literally thousands of people make

the trip to Columbia for the sole (or

could it be “soul”?) purpose of attending

the annual Roots N Blues N BBQ

Festival. We are so lucky to live here,

and even better—as Broadway

members we are all eligible to receive

special pricing for Festival tickets!

As a Broadway member, you can

order festival passes for one or three

days at a discounted price by entering the code,

BROADWAYCHR5TN, when ordering online. The

code will save you from $5-$26 on your purchase.

The code is valid until September 15.

Performers for the 2015 festival have been

announced, and the variety and quality of musicians

promises to make 2015 the best year yet! Mike

Farris is the featured performer for

Sunday Gospel and he sings from

the heart and soul of his own

experience of God’s love and

mercy. You can find numerous

YouTube video clips of his

performances and songs.

An added treat for Broadway

members will be the debut of

“Broadway Blues,” as the opening

group for Mike Farris. This group of Broadway

musicians and vocalists, selected by and under the

direction of Tom Brintnall, has been rehearsing since

June for its Roots N Blues debut. Broadway Blues

will perform ten songs as the opening act for Mike

Ferris—if you’ve never attended the festival before,

this is the year to do it!

Where can you buy eight 10-ounce steaks for $30?

The steaks are individually vacuum-sealed and are

USDA Choice.

This bargain would be hard to find in Columbia, but

there is a way—each month, Broadway’s Food

Ministry offers great deals on steaks, pork, chicken

and other selections through our partnership with

Bread of Hope. Bread of Hope provides pre-packed

boxes of food each month, similar to Angel Food, but

much higher quality.

The August menu is on the Broadway website and

available for download in the Broadway Weekly e-

news. Printed copies are available in the church

office, at our drop box outside Fellowship Hall and at

all Welcome Centers.

If you enjoy working with energetic, enthusiastic and

engaged people, there is a ministry for you at

Broadway!

Connections Ministry coordinates and plans all of

Broadway’s church-wide fellowship events, including

the August 23 Ice Cream Social. The Connections

Team is fortunate to have many members, as many of

its members travel and cannot attend or help with

every fellowship event. So, it is easy to be a part of

this ministry without attending each and every activity!

If you would like more information about

Connections Ministry and how you can help, contact
