High School FootballThe LaVilla High School cheerleaders were on the sidelines whentheir team played Refugio in a state high school football game Fridaynight in Javelina Stadium.

PRIOR TO THE start of athletic events throughout the nationlast weekend, there was a moment of silence in memory of victimsof the terrorist attacks in Paris, France, Friday.

Such was held prior to the Javelina men’s basketball gameSaturday night in the Steinke Center.

Also remembered before the Javelina game was formerJavelina head men’s basketball coach and basketball player DonMcDonald, who had passed away earlier in the week in SanAntonio.

THE JAVELINA FOOTBALL team closed out its season lastweekend with an offensive bang.

The Javelinas amassed 546 total yards against West TexasA&M and it was almost perfectly balanced between rushing andpassing.

There were 274 rushing yards and 272 passing yards.Several individuals had career days.Quarterback Myles Carr completed 29 of 30 (.633) passes for

272 yards and four touchdowns.Running back Greg Pitre rushed for 226 yards and averaged

8.4 yards a carry on 27 attempts. He also had four pass receptionsfor 52 yards and two scores.

Pitre’s rushing figure was the 13th single-game best for theJavelinas.

Receiver Anthony Autry had seven receptions for 145 yards. All three are underclassmen.

OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE had one of the biggestturnarounds of the season Saturday against Tarleton State inStephenville.

The Aggies had dropped an 84-47 decision to the Texans Oct.24 and three weeks later, the Texans squeaked by, 48-47.

OPSU becomes part of the Lone Star Conference in footballnext fall.

WESTERN NEW MEXICO, also coming into the LSC nextyear, played its final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference footballgame last weekend and defeated Black Hills (S.D.) State, 59-21, inSilver City, N.M.

The Mustangs won two of their last three RMAC contests.

HENDERSON (ARK.) STATE defeated Ouachita Baptist(Ark.), 21-17, last weekend.

There probably aren’t many fans who read the Highlightsinterested in that result. But it was a big one for the editor, an HSUalum.

This is one of the biggest rivalries not only in NCAA DivisionII but all of college football.

These two schools are located adjacent to each other inArkadelphia, Ark.

Highway 67 divides the two campuses. Actually, Hendersonhas a few buildings on the same side of the highway as Ouachita.

JAVELINA HEAD MEN’S basketball coach Johnny Estellewill be one of the lecturers at the 25th annual South Padre IslandBasketball Clinic May 6-7 on South Padre Island.

YOU COULD HEAR a sigh of relief when the final Lone StarConference postseason playoff games were played Saturday. Thiswas especially true in Commerce.

The playoffs have been necessary but not popular. They have been held to give each of the LSC teams two extra

games on their schedules. It would have been impossible to gainthese two games had there not been a playoff.

But they haven’t been popular with the fans.At last weekend’s games, there were 5,119 fans at the game

between the two top-ranked teams…Texas A&M-Commerce andMidwestern State—in Commerce. There were 403 at the EasternNew Mexico and Angelo State game in Portales, N.M., pitting theNo. 3 and No. 4 seeds. There were 1,178 at the Javelina gamewith West Texas in Canyon. And there were 1,276 in Stephenvillefor the Tarleton State-Oklahoma Panhandle State contest.

The two years of playoffs have tarnished the glow of winningthe LSC championship for Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Lions have lost in the playoffs each season, dropping adecision to Midwestern State Saturday and having lost to AngeloState the previous year.

After losing to ASU in 2014, the Lions weren’t selected for theNCAA Division II playoffs.

They did get in this year along with Midwestern.

SOUTHWEST BAPTIST (MO.) made one of the biggestjumps of the season when it moved into the No. 6 spot in theNCAA Division II national women’s cross country poll last weekafter not being in the top 25 the previous week.

The Bearcats won the NCAA Division II Central Regionchampionship, its first.

FORMER JAVELINA FOOTBALL player Mark Smith will bea guest speaker at the Hill Country Football Clinic Feb. 12-13 inFredericksburg.

WHEN YOU ARE around long enough, you lose some of yourfriends and cohorts.

Such was the case last week with the passing of DonMcDonald.

When I reported to Texas A&I Aug. 20, 1968, one of the firstpeople to befriend me was Mac. He invited me to his home andhelped me get acclimated to Kingsville.

Along with being the head men’s basketball coach, he was alsoon the football staff. He served as the game filmer and on roadtrips, we roomed together.

Mac had some of the best players in the history of the LoneStar Conference.

Jeff Wildenberg is the school’s all-time leading scorer in acareer and was All-LSC for three consecutive seasons.

Hoegie Simmons is the all-time leading scorer in a two-yearcareer and arguably the most exciting player to ever take an LSCcourt. He was on two All-America teams three times during histwo seasons.

Jeff St. Clair was a standout as a scorer and rebounder andreceived All-America mention.

Chuck Meyer was All-Lone Star Conference and is third in thecareer scoring chart.

Gary Wideman played for McDonald and later returned tocoach the Javelinas.

McDonald himself ranks 16th on the career scoring chart. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1989.
