We know that we are all mortal and not long for this world. Yet, we see beyond this world into the eternal realms. I don't mean by this that we are longing for the 'pie in the sky'. Instead, we Christians are encouraged to see life and death for what it is: a part of our great journey. We know that God walks with us through the darkest valleys. We give thanks in the midst of turmoil because it is God who sets our table. We can't always claim to know 'why' or 'how' things happen. We can only grasp on to the present moment as the gift it truly is. Capt. Standish was not the only one in Plymouth harbor who mourned the loss of loved ones. Nor were those pilgrims the only ones who faced trials and tribulations that tried their faith. Throughout the centuries many faithful believers, even those who faced death, found comfort in faith and the 'eternal perspective'. It is encouraging to hear of awe-inspiring stories of saints from times past as they wrestled with loss and deprivation. It is also moving to think of the prayers they received from their brothers and sisters in Christ at the time of grief. Sometimes all it takes are the little blessings of life, the whispers of God and the simple acts of men and women to make us grateful for the present. In this spirit, Thanksgiving isn't so much about being thankful in a material sense. Instead, it is an insistence that in spite of it all we are living this life that we recognize the little gifts we receive each day and we learn that whatever is to come, God is with us. We give thanks for the precious gift of life and pray that the simple joys might cause to reflect in awe and wonder at the true wonder we experience as part of God's Creation. Pastor Nathan

VOLUME XXVIII NO. 11 _______________ November 2016

Little Gifts Capt. Miles Standish had been much at his wife Rose's bedside. As much time, that is, as he could spare

from stalking game, guarding against savages, and felling trees to construct crude homes on shore. A

bitter wind whistled through chinks and cracks in the Mayflower, anchored in Plymouth harbor that

winter of 1620-21. Rose's chills would turn to uncontrollable shaking. Then just as suddenly, her body

would be ablaze with fever. Herbs from the surgeon's chest did little to relieve her. By spring only five

wives remained out of the eighteen who had sailed to Plymouth. Rose was not among them. The golden

dreams of a New World that Miles and Rose had cherished together had evaporated into hollow hopes.

And yet that fall Capt. Standish joined other bereaved Pilgrims in the first Thanksgiving celebration.

The real test of thankfulness is whether we can give thanks from the heart for what we do have, despite

the wounds and pains of yesterday's struggles. Ours is not some fair-weather faith, but a resilient trust in

in the midst of pain. The Pilgrims lived close to the edge of survival. Perhaps that is why they were so

thankful. We all carry our share of pain into the holiday season, some grief harder to bear than others. For

some that pain has led to a despair and loneliness during the holidays. Truly pastors recognize this while

they are planning for services and celebrations throughout the season.

Perhaps the greatest blessing we have as people of faith is our vision of life. We know that we are all

mortal and not long for this world. Yet, we see beyond this world into the eternal realms. I don't mean by

this that we are longing for the 'pie in the sky'. Instead, we Christians are encouraged to see life and death

for what it is: a part of our great journey. We know that God walks with us through the darkest valleys.

We give thanks in the midst of turmoil because it is God who sets our table. We can't always claim to

know 'why' or 'how' things happen. We can only grasp on to the present moment as the gift it truly is.

Capt. Standish was not the only one in Plymouth harbor who mourned the loss of loved ones. Nor were

those pilgrims the only ones who faced trials and tribulations that tried their faith. Throughout the

centuries many faithful believers, even those who faced death, found comfort in faith and the 'eternal

perspective'. It is encouraging to hear of awe-inspiring stories of saints from times past as they wrestled

with loss and deprivation. It is also moving to think of the prayers they received from their brothers and

sisters in Christ at the time of grief. Sometimes all it takes are the little blessings of life, the whispers of

God and the simple acts of men and women to make us grateful for the present. In this spirit,

Thanksgiving isn't so much about being thankful in a material sense. Instead, it is an insistence that in

spite of it all we are living this life that we recognize the little gifts we receive each day and we learn that

whatever is to come, God is with us. We give thanks for the precious gift of life and pray that the simple

joys might cause to reflect in awe and wonder at the true wonder we experience as part of God's Creation.

Dear Lord,

Today we honor our veterans, worthy men and women

who gave their best when they were called upon

to serve and protect their country. We pray that you will bless them, Lord,

for their unselfish service in the continual struggle

to preserve our freedoms, our safety, and our country’s heritage, for all of us.

Bless them abundantly for the hardships they faced,

for the sacrifices they made for their many different contributions

to America’s victories over tyranny and oppression.

We respect them, we thank them, we honor them, we are proud of them,

and we pray that you will watch over these special people

and bless them with peace and happiness. In Jesus’ name we pray; Amen.

Faithful Through the Years— Claren and Ruth Rawson

Community United Presbyterian Church is very blessed to have Claren and Ruth Rawson as part of our church family. Claren has been involved at CUPC for his entire 87 years. Ruth became a part of our congregation when the two were married 62 years ago. Claren and Ruth have both contributed greatly to the life and mission of CUPC through their service as elders on the local church level and as elder commissioners for numerous years on the presbytery level. They both sang in the church choir for many years as well. The Rawsons are very devoted in their worship attendance at CUPC. They raised their 4 children, Elizabeth, Ron, Phyllis, and Angela within the church. Most Sundays they have their great-grandson, Brandon Beckmann, with them making sure he has the opportunity to grow in his faith. Through the years, they promoted Christian education of children and adults through their involvement teaching Sunday School and leadership in Vacation Bible School. Claren (whose career was in the communication industry) was instrumental along with Ruth’s support, to bring a “state of the art” sound system to Community United back in the early 70’s. He sat at the controls until recent years using his “trained ear” to make sure everyone was able to hear each worship service very well.

Ruth has been a part of Presbyterian Women serving countless dinners and helping to make improvements to CUPC. She has kept a wonderful record of our church history through several scrapbooks containing many articles and pictures of people and events through the years. The ministry that Claren and Ruth have brought to CUPC has been a tremendous blessing and continues to be so. Their giving spirits and quiet demeanor may often be in the background as they prefer, but they convey the message of God’s love and are truly an example of being faithful through the years! The Claren and Ruth Rawson have been nominated by CUPC to the Faithful Through the Years recognition program sponsored by the Older Adult Ministries Task Force of the Des Moines Presbytery. Claren and Ruth will be recognized at the next meeting of the Des Moines Presbytery on Tuesday, November 15 at First Presbyterian Church in Perry, Iowa. If you would like to attend this event and be present for lunch, please contact Ann Polito to make a reservation. The cost of lunch for all guests is $10.00 to be paid upon arrival at the event. Special congratulations to this special couple on this honor…your church family is so blessed to have you as part of us!

season by spreading God’s love.

Christmas Pageant Saturday, December 17, 2016

7:00 p.m.

CUPC is preparing to present its third annual Christmas pageant. This will be a multi-generational collaboration in the retelling of the traditional Christmas story. The children will perform the various characters in the story, adult volunteers will help behind the scenes and the adult choir will be singing several songs throughout the play.

Now is the time for children to sign up for parts in

the play if they have not yet done so! The first practice is scheduled for Sunday, November 6, 2016, at 10:45 a.m. Parts will be assigned at this practice and scripts will be handed out. There will be a quick read-through of the play. (The choir will begin practices at a later date.)

Christmas Pageant Volunteers Needed Adult volunteers are needed to help behind the scenes with the pageant. There are many jobs available, and this is a good chance to get involved in this special production of the church and to have fun at the same time. Choir volunteers are also needed! Donna Hall will be the choir director again this year, so please let her know if you could help out by singing in the choir. You don’t have to be a professional singer, just willing to try! If you have any questions or want to help with the pageant in any way, please contact Michele Clarkson, either by phone (989-4276) or by e-mail ([email protected]) or talk to her in person.

BOARD

Thank you to the following people who have signed up to decorate the bulletin board in the front entryway of the church! November Gloria Eckert December Heather Peacock

THANK YOU to everyone who has helped with this “creative” ministry of the church! Your bulletin boards have been a wonderful reflection of your faith and have touched those of us who have seen them! If you would like to be a part of this special ministry in 2017, please contact Ann Polito at 681-9519 to sign up for a month or two!

Elders Elected for 2017!

Congratulations to the newly elected elders to be ordained/installed in January, 2017!

Gloria Eckert Jim Richards Kim Stewart

May God bless your service to Him and to your church family!

Important Information

In the event of inclement weather, everyone is

encouraged to keep their personal safety in mind when

determining whether or not to attend church functions.

Should events be cancelled, members and friends of

the church will be contacted with necessary

information via a phone calling service.

Please also refer to announcements provided on

local television stations.

Nursery care is available for children 0-4 years of age. (Older children are encouraged to attend Children’s Church during worship and enjoy the Kid’s Korner during fellowship.) At least two volunteers who have gone through the SafeChurch Training will be available to be in the nursery during worship each Sunday. Parents may bring their children to the nursery 5 – 10 minutes before worship begins. (8:50 a.m. or after) and pick them up immediately following worship. Please provide for your child’s needs while they are being cared for in the nursery. A bag with diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes will be greatly appreciated. Please also bring whatever snacks and drinks you will allow your children to have!

If you have any questions or wish to register your children for nursery care, please contact Bonnie Nesler at

971-6151.

Better Than Biscuits

For Your Convenience….. A suggestion has come to the Session requesting a way to help those who are away for several weeks or a “season” to remember their church giving. In response to this idea, CUPC will provide self-addressed mailing envelopes to those who request them! If you would like to receive envelopes, please contact the church office at (515) 989-3426 and indicate the quantity desired and where they should be delivered.
