OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE & SERVE Operation Support Our Troops Update Thanks to all who donated items and those from Kings Highway who helped pack. Volunteers from throughout the city packed over 60 boxes of snacks and hygiene items to arrive in Afghanistan for Halloween. Begin now to save magazines, newspaper sport and comic pages, and motel size soaps, shampoo, etc. for our next shipment.
Highland Blessing Dinner ▪ Thursday, September 27th @ 5:15 pm *Volunteers needed Join us at 5:15 at The Highland Center, 520 Olive St. We will serve dinner to those in need. Our hope is to help those fami-lies and individuals who “fall though the cracks” of social services, and to build community with the people who come to the dinners, and with our partner congregations. Please call the church office if you are interested in volunteering.
Operation Christmas Child ▪ Touch the heart of a needy child this Christmas with a gift-filled shoe box and the Good News of Jesus Christ. 2012 marks an important milestone for Operation Christmas Child as we sur-pass reaching 100 million children with God’s love since the start of the project in 1993. Through gift-filled shoe boxes and evangelistic materials, hurting children across the globe are hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Here are some ways you can get involved. Pray. Pray that God will touch the heart of every child who receives a shoe box gift, and that He will bring many children and families to faith in Jesus Christ. Pack A Gift. A Shoe box filled with small toys and other gifts can open hurting hearts to God’s love. Instructional brochures may be available at your church, or you can find everything you need online at samaritanspurse.org/occ. Include $7 Donation. Delivering shoe box gifts overseas is costly. Give $7 per box to cover shipping and other project expenses. Donate online to follow your box (see below). Volunteer. Make an eternal im-pact on the lives of children through volunteer opportunities ranging from short-term service at a drop-off location or Process-ing Center to seasonal involvement as a project leader to year-round roles on an Area Team. Go to samaritanspurse.org/occ to learn more. You may also drop off your gift here at KHCC in the basket located in the Family Life Center Welcome Center and the basket in the Welcome Center in front of the Elevators.

A “Note” from the KHCC Music Department
SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT (continued from last weeks newsletter)
It had been a gray, overcast day in Oberlin, Ohio. Delegates to the National Council of
Congregational Churches were weary from the dismal weather and long business sessions.
When the meeting recessed, singers from Fisk University filed quietly into the choir loft.
Suddenly the clouds parted and sunshine streamed through the windows. Delegates
stopped talking, and every face turned toward the music. “Steal away, steal away, steal
away to Jesus,” came the song in beautiful, brooding harmony. After a moment of stunned
silence, the convention burst into wild applause and cries for more.
Among the delegates was Henry Ward Beecher, a noted pastor from Brooklyn who imme-
diately begged the group to cancel its tour and come directly to his church in New York.
Unable to do that, director George White offered the group for a December concert.
Knowing the importance of this engagement, White agonized about naming his group;
and in Columbus, Ohio, after spending much of the night in prayer, he found the answer.
They would be the Jubilee singers, the biblical year of Jubilee in Leviticus 25 being a lib-
eration for slaves.
On December 27, 1871, the Jubilee Singers sang at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn. Rev.
Beecher, deeply moved, stood and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to do what I
want every person in this house to do.” He turned his pockets inside out, giving all the
money to the Jubilee Singers. That night the offering was $1,300! Newspapers picked up
the story and soon the Jubilee Singers had engagements around the world.
In their concerts, the section that most stirred their audiences was their “spirituals”—
those soulful songs born of slavery and full of yearning.
In 1872, gospel music publisher Biglow & Main hired a musician to meet the Jubilee Sing-
ers and record these timeless, authorless songs on paper. Later that year, a little volume
was published under the title “Jubilee Songs: Complete, As Sung by the Jubilee Singers of
Fisk University.” It was a milestone for both gospel and popular music; it introduced the
“Negro spiritual” to America and to the world. Among the favorites were “Nobody Knows
the Trouble I’ve Seen” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”
Thanks to the Jubilee Singers, Fisk University is still training young people today---and
still sending out its Jubilee Singers to churches and concert halls across America and
around the world. “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” is on page 643 in the Chalice Hymnal.
