Dear Volunteers,

To those of you who made the long trek to be with us in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, we thank you and welcome you to the Gateway to the North! We are delighted and humbled that so many of you will be helping our local families build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable home ownership.

As you know, Canadians across the country are celebrating our country’s 150th anniversary. As such, Habitat Edmonton is honoured to be hosting President and Mrs. Carter as they bring the 34th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project to Edmonton.

Some of you will be constructing homes at our Carter Place build in southeast Edmonton’s Laurel community, and others will be lending your hard-working hands to our 16-home project in Fort Saskatchewan. Edmontonians are proud of our city and of our people. And we are especially proud of the work that our volunteers, donors, and partners have done since our founding in 1991. This past year, Habitat Edmonton handed house keys to the 500th family we’ve served.

If you are a first-timer to our communities, I know you will enjoy all that we have to offer. We appreciate you contributing in such a tangible way. If you regularly visit the Edmonton area - or even live here - we appreciate you putting in the sweat and love to make us stronger.

I truly trust and hope that the 34th Carter Work Project will be a memorable and enjoyable time for you. Welcome!

Sincerely, Alfred Nikolai President & CEO Habitat for Humanity Edmonton

Habitat for Humanity EdmontonFor over 25 years, Habitat Edmonton has been offering a hand-up to families in Edmonton and across northern Alberta. Habitat firmly believes that home ownership offers stability, security, and self-reliance. Along with operating in the capital region, Habitat has empowered local committees to serve families in Barrhead, Cold Lake, Edson, Fairview, Grande Prairie, Hinton, Rocky Mountain House, Slave Lake, Wetaskiwin, Whitecourt, and on the East Prairie, Elizabeth, Gift Lake, and Kikino Metis Settlements. For more information, please visit HFH.org.

Habitat for Humanity InternationalDriven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org

Habitat for Humanity CanadaIn Canada, Habitat for Humanity has been working since 1985 toward a world where everyone has a decent and safe place to live. With the help of over 70,000 volunteers every year and 56 local organizations from coast to coast to coast, we believe in bringing communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. Worldwide, more than 9.8 million people have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Visit habitat.ca for more information.

ABOUT US

For over 33 years, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter along with his wife Rosalynn have given a week of their time to help Habitat for Humanity improve and build homes throughout the world. President and Mrs. Carter have worked alongside 100,000 volunteers to build, renovate and repair 4,000 Habitat for Humanity homes in 14 countries, while raising awareness of the critical need for affordable housing.

To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, the Carters have brought the 34th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project to communities across Canada - Edmonton and Winnipeg being the main two host sites. Seventy-five homes will be built in the Edmonton area as part of the project.

The event week kicks off with an opening ceremony at the Shaw Conference Centre on Sunday, and the closing ceremony will be held at Commonwealth Stadium while the Edmonton Eskimos host the Ottawa Redblacks to wrap up the week on Friday evening.

President and Mrs. Carter will be building on-site and attending special events during the week. To respect their privacy and limited time schedule, please do not approach the Carters for photos or special requests. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

One in every 10 families in the Edmonton area is in need of affordable housing. The Edmonton Community Foundation reported that in 2011 there were 48,000 Edmontonians in Core Housing Need (families who live in accommodations that are not adequate, suitable, or affordable, and who spend more than 30 percent of gross income on housing).

It is becoming increasingly difficult for people to afford to live in the capital region. According to the Edmonton Community Foundations Vital

Signs (2016), 24,770 renter households

spent more than 50 percent of their income

on housing costs, and that 41 percent of renters live in unaffordable housing. The cost of housing is contributing to families meeting other basic needs, such as food, clothing, and transportation.
