Page 1: Volunteer Spotlight “Scott Mission Camp— the best thing I can do … · 2018-01-30 · But I’m like, ‘No, it’s the most fun and definitely the best thing I can do with myself

As a volunteer at The Scott Mission, Zach is serving up good, hot meals and genuine care to neighbours who need to know someone cares. “I would want people to do the

same for me if I was in a different situation than I’m in now,” he says.

Zenaida is a huge fan of Scott Mission Camp and hasn’t missed a summer in 15 years! “Scott Mission Camp is a second home to a lot of kids and teenagers,” she says. “This place helps you get in-depth with your faith, and I really appreciate that. It’s something you don’t get anywhere else.”

I t takes generous gifts from donors, and the

generous gift of time from scores of volunteers, to make The Scott Mission a place where help and hope can always be found . . .

Zach is one of those special people who, despite being a university student, finds time to serve as a volunteer so he can bring dignity and hope into the hearts of people who are lost, broken, or defeated by life.

“I first volunteered last January and had such a good experience,” Zach says. “I think it’s important for people to give their time. We all benefit from bringing other people up. I would want people to do the same for me if I was in a different situation than I’m in now.”

Through his work preparing and serving food in The Scott Mission kitchen, Zach has seen how important donors’ gifts of meals are to the homeless and even to those who have a home, but are struggling to make ends meet. “The Scott Mission has great food

and I know confidently that when people walk out of here they’re happier and able to focus on other things, like looking for work instead of how to get money to buy food.”

Zach’s volunteer service has impacted the lives of our neighbours in need, just as the people he has served have impacted him. “I hope that everyone we serve finds the resilience to push through the hard times, to find hope and purpose,” he says.

He offers heartfelt thanks to everyone who supports The Scott Mission with their time and their treasure. “Everything you contribute to The Scott Mission is put to use—clothing, food, money—all of it goes towards enhancing the dignity and the lives of the clients here,” Zach says. “There are definitely people who need help. We need to take steps to try to fix problems and not just focus on what’s next for us, but what’s next for the less privileged in our society.”

A PUBLICATION OF THE SCOTT MISSION

WINTER NEWSLETTER 2018

TSM0451IN1

January day when Mike came through the doors of

The Scott Mission . . .

Z enaida was just 11 months old when she first attended

Scott Mission Camp at Caledon.

“My mom heard about the family camp they offer and we were going through a pretty rough time. So she thought maybe if we came to a place where everyone is teaching about God and talking about God, that maybe it would bring more blessings. It was for the better,” Zenaida says with a smile.

Now, 15 years later, Zenaida has never missed a single year of summer camp. She takes a little teasing from her friends at school, but she’s quick to tell them they’re the ones missing out!

“Camp is always fun and happy and never boring. My friends, they’re like ‘You go to Bible camp? It’s probably so boring.’ But I’m like, ‘No, it’s the most fun and definitely the best thing I can do with myself in the summer!’”

Zenaida credits the counsellors and staff with solid mentoring that has helped her resolve conflicts and make better, biblically sound choices in life. “I was not a bad kid, but not the best. This camp has changed my perspective of God . . . I feel like it’s really transformed me. I think before I say things because God is in my heart, in me.”

With her recent acceptance into our Foundations Program, a leadership training program, Zenaida is now receiving the training that will help her serve as a counsellor and mentor in the years ahead; equipping her to impact young lives in the same way she has been impacted.

Among the many blessings Zenaida thanks God for are the caring friends and generous donors who support The Scott Mission and make the summer camp experience available to children whose families could never afford to send a child to a week-long camp.

“I want to give donors a huge thank-you, because Scott Mission Camp is a second home to a lot of kids and teenagers. Without it, what guidance would we have? This place helps you get in-depth with your faith and I really appreciate that. It’s something you don’t get anywhere else.”

Thank you for your generous support of The Scott Mission! Your compassion and generosity are impacting the lives of children and youth in a tremendous way through character- and faith-building programs and activities!

“Scott Mission Camp— the best thing I can do with my summer!”Thank you for enriching the lives of our community’s children and teens!

Bitter winter weather drives more desperate people to seek help from The Scott Mission: people like Mike. Your support ensures they find food, clothing, and the additional help they need to get a fresh start in life.

GIVEYour gifts feed the hungry and help the lost and broken rebuild their lives. Call 416-923-2400 or visit www.ScottMission.com to give now.

SERVEAs a volunteer, you can impact the vulnerable in our community through serving opportunities like food preparation, child care, cleaning, office work, and more.

I t was a bitter cold January day when Mike came through the doors here at The Scott Mission.

The young man was obviously dangerously cold. The clothes and shoes he wore were not going to keep him warm—or alive—for long! He was in desperate need of shelter for the night.

“I remember the staff. How down-to-earth they were. I didn’t have a winter coat or winter boots and they went out of their way to find me stuff to wear. I remember enjoying the food, and then lying down on a mattress and looking up to see Psalm 23 on the wall . . . ‘The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.’”

Mike learned firsthand that The Scott Mission is not only a place of warmth and shelter, but also a peaceful place of hope and healing. With help from our staff and social workers, he got the counselling and medical attention that restored his health. He immersed himself in all of our life-enriching programs; growing

in his faith and finding the courage to build bridges to reunite with his family.

Today, Mike has an apartment and deeply enjoys his renewed relationships, but The Scott Mission is still his “home away from home.” He eats, prays, and celebrates with us as the lives of others—once mired in homelessness, hopelessness, or addiction—are transformed by God to health, independence, and productivity.

“I’ve seen firsthand a lot of lives changed, and it wouldn’t have been possible without gifts from donors,” Mike says. “The Scott Mission is the best. It’s not just a shelter; they help you get back on your feet.”

Thank you for your support of The Scott Mission, which makes it possible for people in desperate need to find good hot meals and life-changing help when they need it most. Your ongoing support will pave the way for a fresh start in life for more hungry and hurting neighbours like Mike.

FiveWays to help YOUR NEIGHBOURS IN NEED

I have just two words for you,

Thank you."Support from caring friends and donors funds important Family Ministry outreaches to strengthen and encourage struggling families in the Toronto area. Each day, families on the brink of homelessness turn to The Scott Mission for help with meals and groceries, plus clothing and other basic necessities. In addition, our staff provide counselling to help families find the tools, courage, and spiritual guidance to live with hope and joy. Your prayers and ongoing financial support make you a great blessing to our neighbours in need!

Thank you to The Scott Mission’s supporters and staff. I am so grateful

that you welcomed me and my family with kindness and compassion during

a frightening time in life that was fraught with many changes. When we

were most alone and desperate, you were there . . .

You helped us with meals and groceries when there was just no way I could

make ends meet; with warm clothes in the dead of winter, and Christmas

presents for my little one . . . otherwise there might have been none.

Among the greatest gifts, you gave us the opportunity to join other families

at The Scott Mission Family Camp, something I could never have

afforded. The experience was incredible and unforgettable, life-changing.

I cried when it was time to leave—we all did.

Thank you for teaching me about Jesus and His love for me, for all of us.

Thank you to everyone who supports The Scott Mission with their time and

money. May you continue to help others as graciously as you helped me

and my family. Your grateful neighbour, Gulnara

I nspired by the incredible impact people in her community make with their

gifts and time, Mary made the commitment to partner with The Scott Mission as a Good Samaritan Giving Circle donor.

“I wanted to be sure funds are used with integrity to benefit and affect the community,” Mary smiles. “It makes me feel good that I’m actually doing something to help others!”

Knowing the impact donations can have in the lives of the most vulnerable made becoming a monthly donor an easy decision. Each month, she knows that her contribution will be there to help wherever the needs are greatest.

“A monthly supporter is one who can be counted on to pay the bills! My gifts help The Scott Mission build a stable foundation of programs the community can rely on.”

Join Mary as a monthly partner in the Good Samaritan Giving Circle and your monthly gift will provide lifesaving and life-changing services to those in need when they need it.

PRAY Your prayers are needed each and every day! Please pray God will direct those who are in need of His mercy and love to The Scott Mission, and that their hearts will be opened to Him through our ministry.

DONATE You can donate much-needed food, hygiene items, and warm winter clothing. Call 416-923-8872 for pick up within Toronto or drop off at the Mission at 502 Spadina Ave., Toronto: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to noon on weekends.
