In the last 4 years, since the last JnNURM fillip, Volvo Buses has partnered with cities to change how people look at public transport. During these years, Volvo has expanded its presence to partner 13 cities to take the first steps in addressing key public transport concerns of growing cities – namely congestion, fuel, environment & safety.

The Volvo experience has spread with over 1000 city buses on the road covering millions of kilometers. Most importantly, these buses motivated a significant percentage of commuters to choose the high-performance Volvo city buses over their personal vehicles. This change has had a profound impact. The economics of a modern city bus have been re-defined with a clear understanding that bigger is not necessarily expensive. A typical Volvo city bus can be as competitive as a standard bus on financial performance. Also, the general notion on maintenance of high performance buses has been demystified. But the key learning has been that partnership between manufacturers, operators and authorities is essential to having viable operations. Volvo Buses has played an important role in the way people perceive public transport and has also helped wean them away from personal vehicles. But this is just the beginning.

The focus is on investing for the future that is sustainable. Efforts are being made by a wide range of stakeholders to address the present concerns and put in place solutions for the long-term. Volvo’s transport solution is bundled truly in this sense to address and provide a unique travel experience complemented with a factor of motivation for the commuter to choose a bus every time.

MobilityDesign to Inspire People

For many years, Volvo Buses has been constantly striving to make public transportation more attractive and profitable to our customers. Our design starts with – the understanding of operators, the drivers and the passengers and realized in terms of the vehicle features that best suit the interests & needs of high-performing city transportation.

Vehicle operating conditions in a city has tough duty cycle, wherein frequent start-stops, quick acceleration, fly-over gradients, effective air-conditioning is required in a complete day operation. This effectively translates into a demand on vehicle and its system with a number of salient features, which is delivered by the Volvo city bus making it distinct.

The Volvo 8400 JnNURM city bus also makes public transport an attractive option to people from various walks of life, including senior citizens, women, and children as well as differently-abled people, who require special attention & care. With easy manoeuvrability, higher average speeds, lower NVH, longer service life, besides enhanced comfort & safety, the premium city bus of today is clearly playing the role of expected of it – that of drawing people away from their personal vehicles and imparting a better travel experience.

The Volvo 8400 has been developed keeping in mind the specifications mentioned under JnNURM. The product has undergone extensive testing lasting many months in order for Volvo to develop the bus to meet the demands of growing Indian cities.

Quick and Easy entry & exit for all. Entry at just 350mm,means it is easy to get on and off, especially for passengers with impaired mobility. The Volvo 8400 kneeling-feature along with pneumatic lifting and lowering mechanism enables the body to be lowered, while passengers are boarding andalighting. The clear door width of 1200mm in the front andrear of the bus help in comfortable & quick entry and exit.

Safe. The bus is easy to drive and offers excellent handling ability, rollover protection and safety is further boosted by powerful disc brakes on all wheels, roll stabilizers and a true-bus suspension system. The doors are equipped with sensitive edge to prevent passenger injury during accidental door closure.

Friendly, Safe and Efficient

A key reason why Volvo provides more efficiency, while caring for all - the young, old, speciallychallenged, men or women.

Noise, Vibration & Harshness

A standard in cars and a key reason why passengers are ready to leave behind their personal vehicles for Volvo Buses.

Many sum up a pleasant drive - summing as a good AC and a good drive. But there is more to it.

Noise vibration & frequencies: The sound levels in the bus affect comfort. but its also the disturbing frequencies that need to be cutoff. The vibration levels and its effect on the human body is another unspoken factor. Gentle in harsh conditions: Of course, the ease with which the vehicle handles different terrains and how it responds to frequent start & stop of the traffic – plays a key part in making a comfortable drive. So when it comes to Volvo buses, the need from owners of personal vehicles is clear and profound

EfficiencyPower for

Fuel Efficient Performance

Modern fuel-efficient engine. The engine in the Volvo 8400, the Volvo D8C 330, is a modern 8-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine with a turbocharger and Intercooler.

The engine generates a peak torque of 1200nm at very low rpm range aptly suitable for city bus load conditions. The engine with 330 hp is with EMS for efficient combustion, low emission, instant response, resulting in a good driveability and manoeuvrability.

SCR technology is used for achieving BS IV norms, reducing the pollutants especially nitrogen oxide and particulates. It is a tamper-proof system with Ad-blue as the fuel and engine deration feature.

A well-matched power train with automatictransmission.

A reason how seamless performance is delivered beyond expectations & reliability ensured.

The power train of Volvo 8400 is dimensioned to get the greatest possible power out of the engine. The 6-speed automatic transmission with NBS feature offers unmatched smooth progress and ride comfort. An integrated retarder with a unique torque convertor enhances braking power. The transmission has a smooth shifting pattern that adapts to the topography & vehicle load, which helps optimise the fuel consumption and at the same time provides a jerk free ride experience.

It is not merely about speed. Keeping high averagespeed means the bus must be able to decelerate and accelerate with ease in city traffic. The number of stops in a city traffic and varied traffic densities means that this factor has a major influence. The right engine torque and driveline secures the need.

A high-performing bus offers operations of over 17 hrs without dropping in performance or reliability. A key factor, when a state corporation seeks to achieve ‘more with less; higher trips per day;and be responsive to rising city mobility demands.

Modern Technology

High-performing driveline. The Volvo D8C engine coupled with 6-speed automatic transmission & integrated retarder and optimized rear axle ratio delivers high performance required in city’s start-stop, meaning quick acceleration in the least possible time to enable quickest transit time from bus stop to city road.

The Volvo D8C engine supplies a peak power of 330hp in order to meet optimal power to weight ratio and ensure reserve power, which is critical to meet three areas for good city duty cycle – instant acceleration, air-conditioning performance, and gradeability.

Technology for Greater

Reliability

Engine Management System and Bus Electronic Architecture. The Engine Management System (EMS) with Bus Electronic Architecture (BEA2) in Volvo city buses help in quick engine diagnosis, notification of severe faults and maintenance schedules to ensure a high reliable vehicle. CRDI technology & precise fuel injectors ensure lower emission and good fuel economy through the life of the engine.

Bus Electronic Architecture (BEA2). All Volvo buses are equipped with modern bus electronic architecture (BEA), which is a 2-channel advanced form of a Master-master multiplex system. The architecture is an integration of all the key aggregates of the vehicle system like brakes, suspension, engine management, gearbox, etc. Each of the aggregates have a dedicated multiplexing node with a dedicated control unit. The control unit is programmed to monitor the particular functionality of the aggregate. In the BEA architecture each of the control unit can send and receive commands from other control units in the vehicle thus optimising the operational parameters for its own functionality.Based on a modular concept BEA helps significant reduction in the wirings and fuses used in the vehicle and promotes use of correct wire sizes. This also is a safety feature, which can reduce the short circuits and wrong/faulty connections.

Care For Driver

The driver environment in all Volvo city buses are designed so as to ensure that the person driving the vehicle is not fatigued because of the road conditions and traffic jams. The aim is to ensure that the driver is always alert and can respond quickly to any panic road situations. The driver area is an ergonomically designed, satellite configuration having clearly grouped and accessible switches ensuring least distraction from the traffic. The modern & informative instrument cluster has clear wide display system that can be adjusted as per different lighting conditions.

Steering System Architecture. The steering system in all Volvo buses offers flexible and easy driving drivers area that can be adjusted as per the driver needs. The telescopic steering column provides adjustments of the steering wheel with angular and up/down movements. The seats have 4 degrees of movement with pneumatic adjustment system which also acts like a cushion like comfort. The power assisted progressive steering ensures least effort while driving.

Safety Cornerstone

At Volvo Buses, Safety is one of the core values. We pay a lot of attention toensure that our products are the best in Safety and that our stakeholders – customers, drivers and passengers – experience this at all times. Over the years,Volvo has continuously worked to improve the safety standards by developing and integrating new technologies in all our buses.

On-road

Safety

Disc Brakes. The disc brakes in the front and rear are of the same type as those found in Volvo’s larger buses. The brakes features Volvo EBS providing the best braking power & shorter stopping distances.

ABS. The brakes are designed in such a way that the disc brake is always in full contact with the brake lining regardless of the temperature. The brake disc is mounted on the hub via a patented splined like joint allowing the disc to expand symmetrically. The Volvo disc brakes at the front in combination with the drum brakes at the rear are designed for operating reliability and longer service life.

Hydrodynamic Retarder. Retarders play an important role to enhance LCC for a city duty cycle. The brake blending feature of the EBS uses the retarder efficiently to provide a fool proof and efficient braking system.

Electronic Braking System. Indian city driving cycle has a high degree of unexpected events, demands on panic brakes and good control on vehicle especially during 3-4 months rainy seasons. The brake design must provide enhanced manoeuvrability by preventing wheel lock condition, shall help improve the brake and tyre life, smooth deceleration and stop, reduce wear and tear of brake components. The above demands are best met by the Electronic Braking System in Volvo city buses, which has electronically controlled disc brakes integrated with anti-lock braking system on all wheels for better braking efficiencies, lower heat dissipation, smaller stopping distance in city’s bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions and better vehicle control with minimum brake force.

Door Brake System. PassengersafetyisenhancedwiththeDoor Brake System in Volvo city buses. This system preventsthe vehicle from moving if either of the doors is open. These doors are with sensitive edge technology so that peopleare not injured during the opening/closing of the doors. Thedriver dash-board also shows the status of a rear door open/close and hence, the driver can ensure the boarding/alighting has been completed.

Brake Blending is the function within the EBS system. This means that the wheel & the auxiliary brakes cascadewitheachotherwheneverthebrakesareapplied.Whenthedriver steps on the brakes the service brakes initially does alltheaction. However, whentheauxiliarybrakesoutputincreases they assume the brake action gradually resulting inminimal wear of the service brakes. The EBS system alsosenses the wear level of the brake lining and levels theaction between the axles ensuring, that the axles alwayshave the best brake lining for high performance.

When it comes to Volvo, technology defines the way people experience comfort and safety in a city bus. Besides features like electronic suspension, kneeling mechanism, wide-access to facilitate quick entry/exit of people with disabilities, the typical Volvo city bus imparts an assurance of safety at motivating people to choose the bus.

ECS (Electronic Controlled Suspension) Electronic Controlled Suspension (ECS) plays a key role ingood and comfortable ride experience. The suspension systemin all Volvo city buses is designed in such a way that the entire interior load of the vehicle is distributed evenly across all types of duty cycles with factors like road shocks and road irregularities. This is possible with controlling and maintaining the spring rate of each of the bellows under all loading conditions. This is ensured by the ECS system, which regulates the bellow height precisely as per load and road conditions ensuring a smooth ride experience for the passenger. This would also mean lesser vibration passing onto the chassis and bus body resulting in lesser wear and tear. Self-correction of the bellow height helps protect driveline angularity related problems, counters road unevenness; bellow failures can be easily monitored. The build quality and technology of the bellows in all Volvo city buses meet and even exceed the demanding operations cycle in varying traffic, congestion and road conditions making it ideal for long duty cycles.

Air-conditioning An effective air conditioning is essential for passengers to travel in comfort and to be insulated from the conditions outside. All Volvo city buses are equipped with AC systems that deliver best performance in challenging conditions, like road congestion, bad roads, and demands of long duty cycles. Some of the salient features of air conditioning in Volvo city busesare:• 32kWACcapacitywithpulldowntimeof<30minutes

Performance Over a Life Time

Deploying City buses and calculating returns can be seen from various perspectives. Furthermore, deploying Premium High-performing buses is a change process, which means that it is coupled with the increased awareness of the passengers, the network, the value. The returns over time increase manifold when compared to the day one.

Better Life cycle

Cost

The Operations perspectivei. A Volvo City Bus pays back from the increased

preference from loyal customers. As is witnessed in many STUs where Volvo City Buses operate, a typical Volvo bus can attract more passengers compared to normal city bus. Research shows that passengers are willing to pay higher fares for travelling in high-performance buses. As a result of greater passenger preference, the revenue generated by Volvo City Buses is higher compared to other services. Add to this the factor that a Volvo product can easily operate for 17-18 hours a day without a problem.

ii. Of course, cost of operation side is equally important. Considering the tight margins one has in the business, a 1% reduction in the cost of operation could be an increase of 10% in profits! Volvo City Buses come with high uptime, which means that the maintenance cost per km is competitive for the number of kms the bus operates each day.

iii. There is also a reduction in administrative cost due to

The City Perspectivei. The savings for a city are even more.ii. Considering that a Volvo is proven to attract passengers

who would otherwise use their personal vehicles, an immediate impact is reduced vehicles on road.

iii. So, with one Volvo, assuming 50% people have left their personal vehicles behind, you have 20 reduced numbers of cars on road. This means 20 fewer engines on road. This also means so much lesser emissions. Each car on roadoccupies2.5timesitslengthandwidth.With20cars off the road, you almost reduce 150m of length of road used against just 30m of a bus. Imagine the reduced infrastructure requirement.

iv. It is proven that moving 5% more people into public transport from personal vehicles has a higher impact on reduction in emissions than increasing the emission regulations of the vehicles.

v. The fuel savings, the emissions saved, the road space and the increased safety is worth billions of dollars saving for a city.

better reliability of the buses and the easier maintenance schedules. This includes on-site support services supervised by Volvo technicians.

iv. The high reliability and uptime of the Volvo City Bus is further supported by an over 10 years + lifetime. This means that the costs you do not calculate, but which generate unexpectedly are minimized – aggregate breakdowns, refurbishment, reduce non-operational vehicles, higher driver motivation. This predictability allows for planning which has high impact in future cost optimization.

v. Fuel is a key factor in India covering for over 50% of the operating cost. Volvo Driver Training has a potential of reducing 10%+ fuel consumption merely because of driver behaviour. Coupled to that the Volvo Automatic Gearbox ensures that the Volvo is always operating at an optimized performance. The fuel cost per passenger per km in a Volvo City Bus is significantly better. For the corporation, this factor has contributed significantly to the profits from the Volvo fleet in operations.
