ENGINES VOLVO POWER

325-425 hp, 1250-1550 lb-ft.The Volvo D11 is a fuel efficient, lightweight engine designed to improve reliability and minimize cost of operation. The D11 delivers performance competitive with larger engines, beginning at 325 hp and up to an impressive 425 hp* at 1,550 lb-ft torque. One XE and two Eco-Torque ratings are available. It’s also a lighter solution for maximizing fuel efficeincy in bulk, less-than-truckload, and distribution applications.

375-500 hp, 1450-1850 lb-ft. The Volvo D13’s efficiency, power, and light weight improves operating costs, while meeting the new 2017 GHG emissions standards. Twelve power ratings are available, from 375 to 500 hp.

Fifteen XE, eight Eco-Torque, and three Dual-Torque ratings provide “dual-personality” torque output for customers who desire the fuel economy of lower torque with the strong performance of higher torque.

Ideal for applications operating primarily at cruise speed, the D13TC uses turbo compounding to capture and harness energy typically lost through the exhaust. TC recovers lost horsepower and helps improve fuel economy by up to 6.5% compared to previous Volvo powertrains, depending on rear-axle ratios. TC will be available in mid-2017.

500-600 hp, 1650-2050 lb-ft.Volvo’s ultra-reliable D16 delivers the power and torque needed to move large payloads of 160,000 pounds or more** with ease, even on steep grades. Five power ratings are available from 500 to 600 hp, including a heavy-spec XE16 package rated for combination weights up to 143,000 pounds—designed specifically for the North American heavy long-combination vehicle market. One Eco-Torque rating can also be selected for the D16. Available in VNL daycabs and sleepers, it’s the perfect choice for line-haul and heavy-haul operations.

*Beginning early 2017, seven power ratings will be available including new 325 and 425 hp offerings.**Higher limits available with approval.

Efficiency runs in the family.Volvo’s new 2017 family of engines is built on a foundation of proven, developed architecture that leverages innovative hardware to maximize efficiency. Energy that is normally lost is recovered with standard features including lower friction pistons and a two-speed water pump. For additional energy recovery, turbo compounding options will be available for VNL models mid-year 2017.

A standard common-rail fuel injection system now gets the most power out of every drop of fuel. Our reliable variable geometry turbocharger compresses and moves the intake air while providing the correct back pressure to drive the EGR process. And reliability isn’t sacrificed for greater efficiency. All Volvo D11 and D13 engines carry a B50 life of 1.2 million miles.

ENGINES CUMMINS POWER

Cummins ISX12 G320-400 hp, 1150-1450 lb-ft.The ISX12 G is a dedicated, factory-built natural gas engine based on the Cummins ISX12 diesel platform. Featuring the same proven EGR, spark ignition, and simple aftertreatment as the Cummins ISL G engine, the ISX12 G delivers strong pulling power with heavy-duty durability. With five available power ratings from 320 to 400 hp, the ISX 12 G is ideal for regional-haul and LTL distribution applications with GCW ratings up to 80,000 pounds.

Cummins ISX15400-550 hp, 1650-1850 lb-ft.The 2017 ISX15 at the 400–550 hp rating is well suited for fleets in freight applications that require fuel economy and the benefits of bigger block architecture. The economy-focused engine is optimized to deliver peak torque at lower engine speeds and enable down-speeding without compromising drivability.

Power options for special applicationsBecause certain specialized applications require unique powertrains, Volvo works closely with Cummins to provide a full range of power options.

As the fueling infrastructure for natural gas becomes increasingly plentiful, more and more delivery, distribution, and regional fleets are seeking to leverage the benefits of this clean, inexpensive fuel. The Cummins ISX12 G is a proven alternative-fuel solution, well matched to these shorter-haul applications.

For fleets that prefer big-block architecture, but need the fuel efficiency of lower power ratings, availability of the Cummins ISX15 provides an option for open-road applications.

An automated manual transmission with digital intelligence.Volvo has made the industry’s most advanced automatic transmission even better. The latest edition of the I-Shift includes upgraded hardware and software, greater durability and a new countershaft brake for improved performance and smoother shifting. The electronic control unit can handle any load and any road, shifting perfectly every time. We’ve also improved clutch durability and torsional dampening in both our D11 and D13 models. So I-Shift not only keeps fuel costs down, it can help slow driveline wear, reduce noise and vibration, extend transmission life, and lower maintenance costs.

Whether your route includes rolling hills or steep mountain terrain, Volvo’s innovative I-See option employs self-learning knowledge of road topography to work with I-Shift, helping your drivers optimize the truck’s speed and gear-shifting in the most fuel-efficient way.

FUEL EFFICIENCY VOLVO ENGINES

Longer runs between fuel stops.Volvo engines offer an impressive mix of power, efficiency, and value. All our 2017 engines are optimized to help you save up to 3% on fuel compared to previous Volvo engines. And with up to 600 hp and 2,050 lb-ft of torque, Volvo engines are built to handle the demands of the road with all the power you need.

Driving near-zero emissions. Volvo’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system is a superior solution to the EPA’s emissions standards, not to mention a fuel- and cost-saving innovation for your fleet.

Here’s how it works: high-NOx/particulate exhaust flows from the engine to Volvo’s diesel particulate filter (DPF), where much of the exhaust’s particulate is removed. Next, before the exhaust reaches the catalytic converter, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is mixed in. The DEF and catalytic converter change the harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapor, and the truck’s NOx emissions register at near-zero levels. DEF allows the engine to use less exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and maintain higher oxygen levels for better combustion.

FUEL EFFICIENCY INNOVATIONS

Now every road is worth remembering.

Combine I-Shift with an intelligent cruise control and you get I-See. It’s a unique system that learns the topography of the road. Later on, it automatically uses its knowledge to save fuel when the intelligent cruise control is engaged.

Uphill.When I-See knows an uphill grade is coming, it increases speed in preparation. Once the climb begins, I-See uses its stored knowledge to avoid unnecessary downshifts towards the top. You approach the crest smoothly without wasting fuel in a lower gear at the top of the climb.

Downhill.Just before the slope, I-See engages Eco-Roll,® which disengages the driveline and lets the truck roll for the optimum period before re-engaging the driveline. This saves energy and minimizes the need for braking. I-See also knows when the slope ends. So it can apply the engine brake gently in time, rather than abruptly at the end, or continue to gain momentum for an upcoming hill.

When the day is done, drivers need a place to relax and recharge. That’s why we designed the VNL series sleepers with those little touches that make a VNL truck feel like a home away from home.

The flat-roof VNL 430 sleeper maximizes its 118 cubic feet of space. The sleeper area holds a surprisingly large 36-inch wide bed in an efficient 42-inch sleeper, providing a cozy spot to rest up after a long day.

With room for two bunks, the 61-inch sleeper in the VNL 630 and VNL 670 have ample room to rest. And with a lower bunk that opens up to a large workstation, it’s a perfect place to work, eat, or kick back.

For the ultimate in over-the-road comfort, look to the 77-inch sleepers in the VNL 730 and VNL 780. The mid-roof VNL 730 offers an optional 53-inch wide bed. While the high-roof VNL 780 offers a 37-inch bed in the upper bunk and a 42-inch wide bed in the lower bunk, as part of its 371 cubic-foot living space.

SAFETY ACTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Keeping you out of danger.

Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST).Loss of control, jackknives, and rollovers are three of the most dangerous incidents a driver can face. Standard on all VNL tractors, Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology, or VEST, continually monitors driver inputs and normal driving parameters. When VEST detects that the truck is dangerously close to an event such as a rollover, the system automatically reduces engine torque and selectively applies the necessary braking to help get the truck back on course.

Built to exceed the demanding Volvo Swedish Cab Safety Test, our high-strength steel (HSS) cabs have the industry’s highest strength-to-weight ratio, and are designed to absorb as much of a crash’s energy as possible to protect the driver. To further protect occupants, the steering column collapses and the engine and transmission drop down and away from the driver.

Volvo is the only Class 8 manufacturer to make a driver’s side airbag standard equipment in every truck. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the inventors of the 3-point safety belt.
