ACADEMIC INTEGRATION & COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE IN DIVISION I ATHLETICS

5 NCAA TourNAmeNT AppeArANCes • 1946 • 2012 • 2013 • 2014 • 2015 3AGAINST THE SECIn the Tommy Amaker era, Harvard has tallied one win over an SEC opponent in two attempts. Harvard topped Auburn, 69-51, at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii in 2015, but fell to Vanderbilt, 79-70, in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

PLAyER OF THE WEEKOpening the season with a career-best performance, Harvard men’s basketball sophomore Bryce Aiken was selected as the Ivy League Player of the Week for Nov. 6-12.

Aiken became Harvard’s first player to net 30 in a game since Wesley Saunders ‘15, guiding the Crimson to a 70-67 (OT) victory over Massachusetts. The Randolph, New Jersey native poured in 12 of Harvard’s final 16 points, including a game-winning stop-and-pop 3-pointer from 26 feet with just 1.9 seconds to go in the extra frame. Aiken also scored 12 points in the opener against MIT, and shot a dazzling 58 percent from 3-point range over the two games.

THE AMAKER FILEThe all-time winningest head coach in Harvard men’s basketball history, Tommy Amaker returns to the Harvard sidelines for the 11th season. The Thomas G. Stemberg ‘71 Family Endowed Coach for Harvard Men’s Basketball has directed the Crimson to a period of unprecedented prosperity in the form of four NCAA tournament appearances (2012-15), five Ivy League championships (2011-15) and six 20-win seasons (2010-15).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEKBreaking out in the first road action of the year, Harvard men’s basketball’s Danilo Djuricic was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for Nov. 13-19.

Djuricic was strong on both ends of the floor, averaging 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game against Holy Cross and Manhattan. The Brampton, Ontario native poured in a career-high 14 points against the Crusaders, and knocked down five 3-point shots over the weekend. He also rejected a career-best five shots against Holy Cross.

STARTING FROM THE TOP, NOW WE’RE HEREHarvard was picked by the media in the preseason to don the Ancient Eight crown in March, which would be its sixth in eight seasons. The Crimson received six first-place votes and 121 total points, edging Yale and Princeton for top honors by three and seven points, respectively. Penn was chosen to finish fourth as the final team to qualify for the second-annual Ivy League Tournament.

LAST TIME OuTPlaying in their first game since the Wooden Legacy tournament, the Harvard men’s basketball team fell to the Huskies of Northeastern (3-4) by the score of 77-61.

Sophomore Bryce Aiken led the way for Harvard with 26 points, with sophomore Chris Lewis following close behind with 20 points. Sophomore Justin Bassey led the team a career-high 10 rebounds, while Lewis had seven.

DOubLE-DOubLE TROubLEControlling the paint in the season opener, sophomore Chris Lewis tallied his first-career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds against MIT Nov. 10. Classmate Seth Towns followed with his own against Holy Cross, totaling 24 points and 10 boards, and Robert Baker chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds against Saint Joseph’s.

THE NEW GENERATIONAfter being ranked the 10th youngest team in the NCAA according to KenPom rankings, the Crimson returns a core group to the court in 2017-18. Sophomores Chris Lewis, Justin Bassey and Seth Towns all return this season after starting 20-plus games last season as freshmen. Sophomores Bryce Aiken (14.5) and Towns (12.3) led the team in points per game as freshmen a year ago.

WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME!With the roster spots left by the graduating seniors, Tommy Amaker and his coaching staff added three members from the Class of 2021.

Danilo Djuricic, a forward from Ontario, captained the Canadian Men’s National U16 and U17 teams and won a silver medal in the U16 FIBA Championships. Reed Farley is a guard from California, who was a four-year starter and three-year captain with his high school team in La Jolla, California. The second guard joining the Crimson is Rio Haskett. The three-year starter is an elite athlete that was a senior captain at his high school in Richmond, Virginia. In his four years he helped his high school to a 90-11 record.

HOME IMPROVEMENTWith the new season comes a newer-looking building. Lavietes Pavilion has been redone just in time for the season. The renovations include new locker rooms, coaches offices, and improved concession and merchandise areas for fans.

The arena now features fresh new bathrooms, upgraded bleacher seating and a brand-new video board and sound system.

ATHLETE ACTIVISMFormer Harvard men’s basketball standout and current NFL Today on CBS host James Brown ’73 came to campus alongside Dr. Harry Edwards, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at UC Berkeley. The two discussed social issues surrounding sports. This was the second year Head Coach Tommy Amaker has put on an event like this, after last year inviting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to campus.

This social issue discussion gained national media attention in an article from the AP, which was also featured in the New York Times, ABC News, Washington Post, USA Today and many others.

ACADEMICSAt the foundation of Harvard’s lofty reputation is a liberal arts curriculum taught by some of the world’s great scholars. Nobel laureates and Pulit-zer Prize-winning authors teach introductory and Gen Ed courses, and all faculty are readily available for students.

Now equally well-known for its professional schools, Harvard originally received recognition as the country’s first and finest undergraduate institution. It has long been committed to reforming college curricula and, in fact, the whole elective system be-gan here over a century ago. Today, Harvard main-tains its strong commitment to the undergraduate with one of the broadest programs in existence. Students may concentrate in any of 48 fields, including African-American studies, computer and environmental sciences, engineering, government, classics, and folklore and mythology. The majority of courses offered at Harvard have fewer than 20 students, and most departments feature a “tutorial” system of teaching and learning.

THE HARVARD STuDENTWhile Harvard has long been a leader among universities, it is equally committed to develop-ing leaders among people. Thus, its enrollment is not comprised of 6,700 “geniuses.” Instead, the University prides itself on attracting the best all-around young individuals—those with the energy, innovation and creativity to enliven a classroom.

Some students show unusual academic promise through experiences or achievements in study or research. Others are more “well-rounded” and have contributed in many different ways to the lives of their schools or communities. Still others could be called “well-lopsided,” with demonstrated excellence in one particular endeavor. And many students bring perspectives formed by unusual personal circumstances or experiences.

The end result is an undergraduate population drawn from every state and many foreign coun-tries, one that brings together a grand diversity of social, ethnic and economic backgrounds.

ADMISSIONThere is no formula for gaining admission to Harvard. Academic accomplishment in high school is important, but the Admissions Committee also considers many other criteria such as community involvement, extracurricular activities and work experience. There were over 37,000 applicants for the class of 2019.

Strength of character, ability to overcome adver-sity, and other personal qualities often play a part in admissions decisions.

Grades and test scores are relied on to help as-sess academic promise, but they are by no means relied on exclusively. Evidence that you are willing and able to take on academic challenges or that you possess strengths not fully revealed in objec-tive information is also of interest to the Admis-sions Committee.

FINANCIAL AIDIn welcoming the Harvard Class of 2012, Harvard ushered in a dramatic expansion of its financial aid programs. Through a series of reforms, families with incomes up to $65,000 are no longer ex-pected to contribute to the cost of their children’s undergraduate education; families earning up to $150,000 will be asked to contribute just a mod-est fraction of their incomes (generally 10 percent or less); and grants have replaced loans for all undergraduates receiving aid. Harvard has long sought to attract the most talented and promising students, whatever their financial means. It re-mains a paramount priority to make that ideal real.

HOuSING SySTEMBoth academically and residentially, Harvard Col-lege is fully coeducational. The centers of campus life are the residential houses. The house system, established in 1930, provides a small college atmosphere within the university.

Each house has several faculty members and a staff of residential tutors associated with it, as well as dormitories, dining halls, libraries, intramural athletic teams and a number of social events.

There are 12 residential houses, while a 13th unit, Dudley House, provides a parallel life for the students who live off-campus. All freshmen live in or next to Harvard Yard. “The Yard” is the center of the university, and the hub of Harvard’s activity.

Resident adult advisers help students explore the academic and non-academic opportunities of their first year. A wide range of programs are designed especially for first-year students—in the arts, intra-mural athletics and Freshman Seminars.

Students run nearly 400 organizations and programs on campus. There are men’s, women’s and mixed voiced choruses, plus over half a dozen a cappella groups.

Six orchestras, smaller ensembles, chamber groups and rock bands also thrive. Twenty-two dance groups represent diverse cultures and modes of artistic expression from around the world. There are two student newspapers and numerous political, feminist, ethnic, cultural and religious journals.

In addition, there are several student organizations that focus on diversity and social justice issues.

DIVERSITy There are more than 50 cultural, ethnic, and international student organizations at Harvard, as well as communities representing nearly every major religion.

The Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations sponsors many activities that celebrate the ethnic and cultural diversity at Harvard. One of the most anticipated events is Cultural Rhythms, a festival that highlights the talents of Harvard students and offers ethnic foods from around the world. Past emcees have included Queen Latifah, Jackie Chan, Andy Garcia, and Halle Berry.

In the 10 seasons since taking over as head coach of Harvard’s men’s basketball program, Tommy Amaker has reinvented the Crimson into an Ivy League power with a national presence. He has directed Harvard to a period of unprecedented prosperity in the form of four NCAA tournament appearances (2012-15), five Ivy League championships (2011-15) and six 20-win seasons (2010-15). Amaker is the all-time winningest coach with the Crimson, surpassing Frank Sullivan with a 74-66 win at Boston College Dec. 7, 2016.

Amaker was introduced as head coach by Nichols Family Director of Athletics Bob Scalise on April 13, 2007, following six seasons as head coach at Michigan and four at the helm of Seton Hall. Amaker owns a 369-244 career record: 193-105 at Harvard, 108-84 at Michigan and 68-55 at Seton Hall. He has earned numerous Coach of the Year awards, including the 2013 Clarence “Big House” Gaines College Basketball Coach of the Year Award, presented to the top minority basketball coach in NCAA Division I. In 2012, he was presented with district coach of the year awards from both the United States Basketball Writers Association and National Association of Basketball Coaches, and was a candidate for the AP National Coach of the Year. He has also been named a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award five times (2011-15), and the Hugh Durham Award three times (2011, 2012, 2015).

With Amaker at the helm, Harvard student-athletes have garnered four All-America honors, 11 All-District distinctions and 29 all-conference accolades. Additionally, Keith Wright ‘12 (2012) and Wesley Saunders ’15 (2014) have been named Ivy League Player of the Year, Steve Moundou-Missi ’15 (2015) and Agunwa Okolie ’16 (2016) have garnered defensive player of the year plaudits, with Kyle Casey ’13-14 (2010), Siyani Chambers ’16-17 (2013) and Bryce Aiken (2017) earning rookie of the year honors.

Harvard capped the 2016-17 season with an apperance in the inaugural Ivy League tournament. The Crimson - the 10th-youngest team according to KenPom rankings - finished 18-10 overall, including a 10-4 mark in Ancient Eight play. On Dec. 7, 2016, Amaker became the all-time winningest coach in Ivy League history, surpassing the previous mark with a 74-66 win at Boston College. Amaker also ended the season as the all-time leader at Harvard in Ivy wins (94).

Harvard finished the 2014-15 regular season tied with Yale for the Ancient Eight crown. The Crimson defeated the Bulldogs in a one-game playoff for the right to represent the Ivy League in the NCAA tournament, where it fell to fourth-seeded North Carolina, 67-65, despite taking a 65-63 lead with 1:15 to play. Harvard also completed its second straight season sweep of traditional Ivy powers Penn and Princeton during the regular season, becoming the first program in conference history to do in consecutive years.

In 2013-14, the 12th-seeded Crimson knocked off fifth-seeded Cincinnati in the tournament’s second round, and nearly pulled off an upset of fourth-seeded Michigan State to reach the Sweet 16. Harvard finished the year with a 27-5 overall record and a 13-1 mark in the Ivy League, setting program bests for both overall victories and conference victories, and also captured the title at the Great Alaska Shootout along the way. Additionally, a record six Crimson were named to the All-Ivy League teams, including player of the year Wesley Saunders ‘15.

A year earlier, Harvard earned a historic win in the NCAA tournament as the 14th-seeded Crimson upset third-seeded New Mexico, which was ranked 10th nationally. The victory was the first by the Crimson against a top-10 opponent and left Harvard among the nation’s top 32 teams at season’s end.

A win in the NCAA tournament was a natural progression after the 2011-12 season, perhaps the best overall campaign in program history and the first in which the Crimson claimed sole possession of the Ivy title. En route to ending its 66-year NCAA tournament drought, Harvard debuted in the national rankings, climbing as high as No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and No. 22 in the Associated Press poll. The Crimson also won the inaugural Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, with wins against Utah, No. 20 Florida State and Central Florida.

Harvard’s first Ivy crown came in 2010-11, when the Crimson went 23-7, tied Princeton at 12-2 in league play, and made its first NIT appearance. The 2009-10 campaign ended in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, Harvard’s first postseason berth since 1946.

At Michigan, Amaker inherited a program that was reeling from institutional and NCAA sanctions but led the Wolverines to the postseason three times, winning the 2004 NIT title and reaching the championship game of the 2006 NIT. The Wolverines were ranked as high as No. 20 in the nation during the 2005-06 season.

Seton Hall reached the postseason every year during Amaker’s tenure. He led the Pirates to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2000 and to three appearances in the NIT. He was credited with bringing in the top recruiting class in the country, including the national high school player of the year, for the 2000-01 season.

Amaker served nine years as a graduate assistant, assistant coach and associate head coach at Duke, working for legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski. He was an assistant on two NCAA championship teams with the Blue Devils (1991, ’92) and helped Duke to three other Final Fours in eight NCAA tournament appearances. Duke was a combined 230-80 in Amaker’s nine years on the Blue Devils coaching staff.

A native of Falls Church, Virginia, Amaker began his career in college basketball as a four-year starter at Duke, leading the Blue Devils to four NCAA tournaments and an appearance in the 1986 national championship game. He served as captain as a senior in 1987, and was the winner of the Henry Iba Corinthian Award as the nation’s top defensive player. Amaker was enshrined in the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2013, Amaker was inducted in the Washington Metropolitan Basketball Hall of Fame.

A 1987 Duke graduate with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Amaker was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1987 NBA draft. He currently serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and is a former board member of USA Basketball where he was a member of the Men’s Collegiate and Men’s Senior National Committees, helping to select members of the gold-medal-winning 1996 U.S. Olympic team.
