Welcome to Woking Park
Everyone here at Westfield FC,
players, officials, supporters and
generous sponsors are delighted to
welcome you all to Saturday’s game in
the FA Trophy, and Tuesday night’s
tie in the Surrey Senior Cup.
A particularly warm welcome is
extended to our Match Officials and
all those who have travelled from
both Beaconsfield and Spelthorne for
our eighth and ninth home games of
the season. We hope you enjoy your
day, our facilities and hospitality, and
have a safe journey home.
Our visitors from Buckinghamshire are
having a difficult season at the foot of
the Southern Premier South, but
should still be respected for their
Step 3 status, and our desire to reach
the same level will, I’m sure, come
through this afternoon.
Our next home League game has
been a while coming, and looks to be
a great advert for the non-league
game as we entertain Tooting &
Mitcham in two weeks’ time (Nov
9th). Last year’s encounter saw
Westfield come back from an early
Tooting goal, to win 2-1 in the last 15
minutes, so please join us at Woking
Park for another exciting contest.
Enjoy the games,
Neil Collins

BetVictor Isthmian League South Central Roundup by Ian Townsend
Saturday 5 October - the last time Westfield played a League game! We’ve new leaders at the top of the South
Central Division, Hanwell Town
taking over at the summit after they
comfortable beat Chalfont St Peter whilst
Westfield fell to defeat at Barking.
Dwayne Duncan, Gareth Chendlik and
Jeremiah Miah scored for the Geordies in
a three-nil win, whilst a goal in each half
from Junior Dadson gave Barking the
points at Mayesbrook Park.
Harlow Town fell behind in two minutes
at Ashford Town, Dan brown with the
goal, but equalised five minutes later
through Oliver Gnadi and then completed
a smash and grab in the last minute when
Matthew Rush scored the winner. The
Hawks go fourth, and Bracknell Town are
fifth, a Nathan Minhas hat trick helping
the Robins to a four-two win over FC
Romania. Seb Bowerman got Bracknell’s
other goal whilst George Taban and Dinu
Barcari found the net for the Wolves.
Uxbridge climbed to seventh, early goals
from Mark Bitmead and Mahlondo Martin
enough to beat Chipstead, whilst
Waltham Abbey scored SIX at
Northwood. The Abbotts took a second
minute lead through Aron Gordon only
for Harry Lodovica to equalise a quarter
of an hour later. After the break, however,
it was one way traffic- Darrelle Russell,
Gordon again, Nathan Koranteng, Louis
Bowen and Leonne McKenzie finding the
net for the visitors, who climb to eighth.
Our other two matches were drawn. Andy
Ali gave Bedfont Sports the lead at
Marlow only for Kelvin Bossman to
equalise, whilst Hertford Town and South
Park couldn’t manage a goal between
them.

A series of articles by the author of the book ‘A History and Guide to
Football Programmes’ describing how programmes have changed
over a century-and-a-half of Association Football
Everybody’s Doing It in the 1920s
Programme issuing by clubs and associations became the norm in the 1920’s,
resulting from the example shown by those clubs whose pre-Great War programmes
had proved to be good sellers, and significant profit makers. Another reason for the
explosion of issues was the widespread provision of “Half Time Scoreboards” around
football grounds.
In the days before radio coverage and teletext, football crowds had to rely on the
“half times” from other grounds being displayed on enormous fixed boards (either
at the back of the terracing or at the trackside), to ascertain how rivals were faring.
The only means of deciphering the mixture of letters and numbers was to refer to
the coded list of fixtures printed in the match programme. In
this way, the programme had evolved from being a means of
identification of players to being a vehicle for even more
spectator information.
Part of the sudden upsurge in programme production was the
virtual doubling of the size of the Football League in the early
1920’s, by the formation of Division 3 North and the transfer
of clubs from the Southern League to form Division 3 South.
Thus we have the first regular issue of programmes from
Rochdale in 1922/23, Halifax Town in 1921/22 and such long
forgotten ex-League clubs as Wigan Borough and Stalybridge
Celtic (both 1921/22) and Nelson (1924/25). Of clubs to join
the League in subsequent years, York City issued an 8-page
programme in 1924/25 in the Midland League, and Torquay
United first issued (starting with FA Cup ties) in 1923/24.
Chelsea, host club of the 1920, 1921, and 1922 FA Cup Finals, set a fine example by
publishing the first truly official, and substantial, FA Cup Final programmes.
Featuring classical sketches by Bernhard Hugh on the cover, these were 24, 20 and
8-page programmes respectively, the last bearing a very close resemblance to the
standard Chelsea programme of the inter-war years.
The 1920’s was the decade in which football programme production became the
norm throughout the Football League, and for all major non-league clubs, and it
was also the era in which programmes adopted the format we associate with them
today. Henceforth, match programmes would be multi-page, stapled, liberally filled
with advertisements and including as a minimum; team selections, fixtures/results,
league tables, half-time scoreboard and editorial.

Last Sunday’s front page of The Non-League Paper was going to be about the first round proper
of the FA Cup. About the excitement of the upcoming draw at Maldon & Tiptree as Non-League
clubs eagerly awaited those life-changing ties to come out of the hat – and what a draw it turned
out to be.
It was going to be about those clubs daring to dream. Isthmian Premier club Carshalton Athletic
after they upset National League side Dagenham & Redbridge. Or Nantwich Town, who beat
National League North high-fliers King’s Lynn Town. Then there was the story of Kingstonian
beating higher league opposition in Dartford. There was also the drama at Potters Bar Town, who
scored an equaliser against neighbours Barnet in the 11th minute of stoppage time to set up a
replay. And there was the excitement of goalkeeper Alan Julian heading an injury-time equaliser
at Sutton United to keep Billericay Town’s FA Cup dream alive.
The front page was supposed to carry pictures capturing all the emotion of this great competition
on another action-packed day in Non-League football.
Instead, for the second time in a month, it carried a story about allegations of racism. Once again,
the ugly side of society has reared its head in Non-League, and English, football.
On the back of the shameful scenes in Bulgaria when England players were racially abused and
the game was twice suspended, Haringey Borough walked off the pitch following alleged racism
towards goalkeeper Valery Douglas Pajetat. Two men, aged 23 and 26, have since been arrested
on suspicion of racially-aggravated common assault. The incident came in the 65th minute
following a Yeovil penalty where he claims he was spat at and verbally abused by fans. The match
didn’t restart and was abandoned. Boss Tom Loizou also said defender Coby Rowe was targeted.
English football was appalled when the men’s senior team was on the end of horrific abuse and
there have been calls for strong action against Bulgaria and their authorities. We are equally
appalled at these allegations.
FA chairman Greg Clarke spoke in the immediate aftermath of the Bulgaria game. He rightly
pointed out that we must also look at the game in this country because there are issues that
clearly need addressing. There is no hiding from that fact. The conversation must include what we
are doing about our game.
It’s four weeks since allegations were made during the National League game between Hartlepool
United and Dover Athletic. Dover players Inih Effiong and Ricky Modeste were subjected to racist
abuse and gestures. Pools players heard it and were upset at what they saw coming from some of
their home fans. While they considered walking off the pitch, in the end the game was played to a
conclusion.
Hartlepool were rightly praised for their response to the situation and it looks like Yeovil have
reacted in a similar way. Boss Darren Sarll says they stand alongside Haringey and the club say
they will be cooperating with the investigation which The FA say is ongoing. The tie is to be
replayed on Tuesday, October 29.
If proven, the two supporters should never watch a game of football in this country again. Of
course, 99.9 per cent of Yeovil fans will be ashamed of what has allegedly happened. Hopefully
anyone who has seen or heard anything comes forward to ensure the investigation can be as
thorough as is needed.
As we’ve said before, we all have a responsibility to drive this abhorrent behaviour out of our
game and out of our society.
No footballer, no person, should be attacked just because of their skin colour.
In a high-profile competition, Haringey’s actions will be seen far and wide. Hopefully this can be
a stepping stone towards a better future. Their stand is to be applauded. In times gone past, the
incident may not have come to light until after the game.
By stopping an FA Cup game in its tracks, the message will be louder. Racists are not welcome in
our football grounds at any level. Only then can we get back to talking about the football.

Though formed as recently as the summer
of 2017 the roots of Beaconsfield Town FC
stem from Beaconsfield SYCOB which
was founded in 1994 following a merger
between Beaconsfield United and Slough
Youth Centre Old Boys (hence the
“SYCOB” in the Clubs name).
United dated back to 1921 and were
hemselves a coming together of two local
teams whilst Slough Youth Centre formed
their first football team in 1938. With
Slough Youth Centre Old Boys unable to
progress due to a lack of ground
provisions and United themselves
struggling on and off the field at the time
the decision was taken to amalgamate the
two clubs and so Beaconsfield SYCOB
was born.
Initially playing in the London Spartan
Premier Division, and with Fred Deanus as
Chairman, Beaconsfield SYCOB chalked
up a series of Top Five finishes before
finally winning the league in 2000 / 01
under the guidance of Simon Delahunty.
However they were refused promotion to
the Isthmian League due to some harsh
technicalities over the terms of their lease.
A further three seasons were spent in the
Spartan South Midlands Premier Division
before Beaconsfield SYCOB again won
the league in 2003 / 04 and this time
gained promotion to the Southern
Football League (Division One East).
The Rams made solid progress in their
early years at Step 4 and over three
seasons played in three different leagues –
Division 1 East, Division 1 West and finally
Division 1 South & West from where they
were relegated in 2006 / 07. However the
appointment of ex-player Jamie Jarvis,
ably assisted by Peter Scott and with Bob
Breen as Chairman, saw The Rams not
only win the Spartan South Midlands
Premier Division at the first attempt but
also win the Berks & Bucks FA Senior
Trophy and the Premier Division League
Cup, a fantastic treble of silverware.
Promoted to Division 1 South & West, the
club finished a highly creditable fourth
place and made the Play Offs before
losing out to AFC Totton. Moving to the
Southern League Midland Division for
2009 / 10 and with Fred Deanus returning
as Chairman, Beaconsfield SYCOB then
went through a succession of managers,
players, highs and lows until finishing in
bottom place in 2010 / 11. Only a reprieve
and a league restructure saved The Rams
from the drop but since then they have
gone on to over achieve for a club of its
size. Under the guidance of Byron Walton
they finished fifth in the 2011-12 season
and lost out in the Play Off Final to
Bedworth United.

The following season and with James
Pritchard at the helm they again finished
fifth but lost out to Rugby Town in a Play
Off Semi-Final though the season did
finish with some silverware following a
fine win over Chesham United in the Berks
& Bucks FA Senior Cup.
2013-14 saw Gary Meakin take over as
manager just five days before the start of
the season and with only five players on
the clubs books – to finish 8th and reach
the Quarter Finals of the League Cup was
a fine achievement as was a runner up
spot in the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup,
Chesham United gaining revenge for
defeat twelve months earlier.
The 2014-15 season saw a partnership with
the FAB Academy who provided the bulk
of the teams players under the
stewardship of Andy Hurley and Nas
Bashir. That partnership continued into
2015-16 season with Geoff Warner as
manager as The Rams finished in a re-
spectable ninth place whilst the 2016-17
season saw them under the joint
stewardship of Andy Hurley and Leigh
Wooldridge and ended with a 16th place
league finish though a run to the Fourth
Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup was a
“Best Ever” for SYCOB.
The 2017-18 season saw the return of Gary
Meakin as the first manager of the newly
named Beaconsfield Town, with Chris
Coyle as Chairman. The Rams had virtually
a whole new team and, helped by an
amazing away record, they kept in touch
with the League pacesetters to finally gain
top spot on the last day of the season and
claim the Evo-Stik League South, East
title. Competing at Level 3 for the first
time in their history in the newly formed
Evo-Stik League South Premier South
division, The Rams achieved a highly
credible 12th place finish as well as
reaching the First Round of the F.A.
Trophy for the first time in their history,
losing out to eventual finalists Leyton
Orient. The new season sees the club
expanding with the formation of an
Academy side as well as an Under 18 team
as The Rams look to build for the future
both on and off the pitch.

The first Surrey Senior Cup was started in 1882, when the
Surrey County Football Association's had it's very first
meeting as an organisation.
The current champions of the competition are Met
Police who beat Tooting & Mitcham 2-0 in the 2018/19
final. This was Met Police's third Specavers Senior Cup
Trophy in the club's history, further asserting themselves
as a club to be reckoned with in this competition.
Historically, the most successful club in the competition
are Dulwich Hamlet of South London, who have won the
competition 16 times.
Although the most successful club, Hamlet haven't
appeared in a Specsavers Surrey Senior Cup Final for over
40 years, with the club going on to withdraw their dual-
affiliation due to budgetary reasons after the 2008/09
season. This makes Sutton United the club who currently
complete the most successful, having won it 15 times, and
are hot on the tail to become the record holders.

the Fourth Round in 2001-02,
losing 2-0 at Sutton United,

Spelthorne Sports Football Club, nicknamed The Spelly, was formed in 1922. The
team won the Surrey Elite Intermediate League in the 2010–11 season, gaining
promotion to Division One of the Combined Counties League. As well as winning
the Surrey Elite Intermediate League title in 2011, the club also won the League
Challenge Cup, beating Ripley F.C. in the final.
In 2013–14 The Spelly won the Middlesex FA Intermediate Cup, beating Middlesex
County Premier side Cricklewood Wanderers 3–0 in the Final. Second half goals
from Robert Smith (2), and Lee Staples ensured the victory. The match played at
North Greenford United on 26 March 2014. On 16 April 2014, Spelthorne Sports
were crowned Combined Counties Division One Champions with a 2–1 win away to
Epsom Athletic. They lifted the trophy 3 days later following an emphatic 7–0 win
at home to local rivals Staines Lammas. The Spelly also won the RPM Records
Division One Challenge Cup against Staines Lammas at Windsor FC on 5 May 2014.
A single second-half Lee Staples goal was enough to make sure The Spelly lifted
the trophy, winning the league and cup treble in the process.
The team went on a phenomenal 46 game unbeaten run in all competitions that
season, beating teams in cup competitions from higher divisions such as Frimley
Green, Staines Town (on pens), Walton Casuals, Wembley, and Epsom & Ewell
(on pens). That unbeaten run finally came to an end on 7 May 2014 when they
played Combined Counties Premier Division side Hanworth Villa in the Southern
Combination Cup Final, losing 1–0. The game was played at home and marked the
club's first ever game under the newly installed floodlights. The lads then suffered
their second defeat of the season to the same opposition when the sides met
again 3 days later in the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup Final, again
losing 1–0.
The 2013–14 season was extremely successful for Spelthorne Sports. Winning two
cup finals, and finishing runners-up in another two cup finals. However the biggest
achievement by far was winning the league without losing a single game in the
process. Winning 22, drawing 8, losing 0, scoring 92, and conceding 23.
In the 2018–19 FA Vase, Spelthorne Sports were drawn against de facto reserve
side AFC Spelthorne Sports, winning 4–1.
