THE VIRGINIA SMALLSAT DATA CONSORTIUM

Researched & designed a VSDC ecosystem capable of building data science markets to drive growth in Virginia

The Virginia SmallSat Data Consortium (VSDC) is a state-funded initiative designed to facilitate data sharing, data-centric problem solving, and the expansion of data-ready workforces across the Commonwealth. Our goal is to create an ecosystem where Virginia citizens, non-profits, and businesses can identify opportunities to combine their informational needs, capabilities, and assets in order to identify novel solutions and foster new businesses in the data science sector.

COMMUNITY members facilitate events and comprise the data workforce

WORKFORCES source talent from the community and collaborate across VSDC tools and platforms

OUR FIRST QUARTER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Two newly-created woman-owned businesses have already been established through Consortium activity. This is in addition to four existing Virginia-based start-ups and the creation of four full-time development positions supporting community relations & production of new data-access tools.

VSDC has come together with national, local, and state partners to develop and provide public tools like the Virginia Open Data Cube, the first of its kind in the United States, to democratize access to cutting-edge datasets and diversify workforces to better address pressing concerns across the Commonwealth.

IDENTITY ASSETS to promote cohesive messaging with stakeholders, including logos, a style guide, visual elements, letterheads, and document templates

MEDIA CAMPAIGN STRATEGY to advance public awareness of data’s role in Virginia’s economic future and the Commonwealth’s unique competitive position in the field of data science

Leveraged strategic partnerships with Virginia business leadership to design VSDC identity, develop community, & increase impact

Created inclusive public platforms and resources to facilitate community building and increase awareness of Virginia’s informational and analytic leadership

Released Virginia’s regional Open Data Cube, a tool to fuse advanced satellite imagery with other data sources to solve problems through accessible public interfaces

VSDC has partnered with The IncuHub, an entrepreneurship center based in Hampton Roads, to establish the consortium’s online presence, design VSDC’s identity and brand, and drive community building events activity. This partnership has already yielded invaluable resources for expanding and distributing VSDC activity, set high standards for VSDC identity, and provided a strong resource for future business connections.

Development and outreach activity is well underway for the VSDC teams. Along with the activity outlined in this report, these critical milestones for the initiative have already been completed in Q1 2020:

ENTREPRENEURIAL FRAMEWORKS & RESOURCES are being developed to help stakeholders establish ethical, scalable, legally compliant data science companies in the commonwealth.

ADVISORY BOARD candidates have been identified and are being actively recruited. These industry and public leaders will advocate for problem owners, identify data sets, drive community development, and advance VSDC values and vision across the Commonwealth.

NEW HIGH-VALUE PARTNERSHIPS are being forged every day with national, regional, and local institutions. Current partners include NASA CEOS, VISA, the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience, and universities across Virginia.

VSDC’s framework has already supported partner events in Q1. In the coming months, several additional events are being sponsored, hosted, and coordinated by VSDC - highlighting diverse topics including data ethics, integration, and security around the state
