Assessment team of social economic impact forcommercial release.

The team visited Jatiroto Sugar Mill, Jatiroto andSukosari Research Center, Banyuwangi located 30km and 130 km from Jember respectively to see thenursery farms (conventional system & single budsystem), fields of GM sugarcane with droughttolerance experiment trials and Soil & Entomologylaboratories.

Overall remarks of team on the field performanceof the drought tolerant GM sugarcane inIndonesia:

The team visited only about 2.1 hectares outof 50 hectares as reported under GMsugarcane variety.Field appearance of the GM crop is better thanthe control variety because of green tops andthere was no any pithiness in the GM canes.Drought tolerant sugarcane (NXI-4T) isplanted in 0.8 hectares land and controls arefirst ratoon crop which is being maintained.Crop is 8 months old, distance between tworows are of one meter, Field appearance ofthe transgenic crop is good.

OBSERVATION IN FIELD

Performance of drought tolerantGM sugarcane (NXI-4T) in thefield (0.80 ha)

Performance of controlsugarcane (BL-19) in the field

(0.80 ha)

Inter-node borer and Pokkah boeing diseaseswere observed in both control and GM plants.Quality characters in GM crop (plant crop) wasfound lower than controls (because it is aratoon crop)The data on the effect of fodder fromtransgenic sugarcane tops or green leaves oncattle, consumption of juice from transgenicsugarcane on human being, soil testing, rainfalland humidity was not available.Different quality parameters like brix percent, pol percent and pithiness at 10th, 12th & 14th

month is awaiting from PTPN XI.

The future plan of action will be decided in GoverningCouncil meeting of the Institute.

Mr. Shivajirao Deshmukh, DG, VSI and Mr. P V Ghodke,Scientist, Agronomy section visited Rana Sugars LtdDist. Amritsar(Punjab) on 19th -20th September 2015to discuss thesugarbeet projectand prospects ofMaize & Sweetsorghum crops forthe production ofethanol as perinvitation from Mr.Rana Jagjeet Singh,President, Ranasugars group(Punjab and UttarPradesh).

Mr Amrik Singh Khattar, General Manager (GM-cane)shared his experience of sugarbeet crop from last threeyears and showed working of 3500 TBD sugarbeetprocessing plant. He informed that farmers weregetting good beet yields but at the time of beetharvesting rains and non- availability of properselective post- emergent herbicide were theconstraints for good plant population and sugarrecovery. During visit of sugarcane farmer’s fields, DG,

VSI had discussed on cultural operations usually carriedout by the farmers. He suggested that farmers should

adopt site specific cropm a n a g e m e n tpractices, viz.selection of variety, quality seed, seedtreatment, integratednutrient managementand interculturaloperations forimprovement ofproductivity andquality of sugarbeet aswell as sugarcanecrops. He highlightedVSI’s proactive role inthe development of

agro-techniques for the evaluation of differentsugarbeet & sugarcane varieties and extensionservices provided to the sugar mills on large scale forcultivation of sugarbeet and sugarcane crops. TheDiscussions were held on area under maize and sweetsorghum crops in Punjab with their cost benefit ratioand prospects for these crops as raw material forproduction of ethanol in near future.

Welcome functionThe students of M Sc (semester-III) of Wine, Brewingand Alcohol Technology(WBAT) organized welcomefunction on 14th August 2015 for fresh studentsjoining the course for academic year 2015-16. Theprogram started with worship of Goddess Saraswatifollowed by enlightening of lamp by Dr. S V Patil,Technical Adviser & Head, Alcohol Technology. In an inaugural speech, Dr. S V Patil welcomed allthe students and a briefly introduced thedepartmental activities on research, academic andextension. He also provided guidance to the studentsregarding scope and potential for the course andchoice of specialization subjects to pursue their careerin the field of Second Generation Biofuels, BrewingTechnology and Enology. In replies to the queries raised by the fresh studentsregarding future potential of alcohol industry in India,he described overall global scenario of ethanolindustry and current updates of 10 % ethanol blendingprogram policy of India with facts and figures. He

said that under circumstances of drop in sugar prices,B-Heavy route will be an attractive option forenhancing ethanol production by the distilleries. Tomeet this challenge, all alcohol manufactured bymolasses based distilleries might be diverted toethanol and there will be huge demand of alcohol forpotable and other purposes. The spirit manufacturedby the grain distilleries will probably meet thischallenge. He also expressed his opinion aboutbrewing and wine sector and their current growthrates in India. To meet these challenges, there ishuge demand of technical personnel from theseindustries and these companies will offer attractivesalaries and recruit VSI’s students. The fresh students introduced themselves andexpressed their thoughts about joining this reputedInstitute.
