I am diabetic for the past seven years. My blood sugar was under control until last month. However, when I did blood test yesterday, the fasting sugar was 162mgs% and postprandial was 286mgs%. I had some fruit juices without adding sugar. Did fruit juices without sugar, increase blood sugar levels?

Thanks for your timely question. This question helps many diabetes people during this summer, since most of the patients drink fruit juices in summer. All ripe fruits are rich in carbohydrates. Fruits are made up of carbohydrates and fibre, and the fibre content depends on the variety of the fruit. Once fruits are made in to juices, the fibre content is lost and it will have only carbohydrates, even without adding sugar. So fruit juices will definitely increase blood sugar. Diabetes patients should avoid fruit juices. Bottled drinks and tender coconut are rich in sugar content. These drinks have to be avoided by diabetetics. If blood sugar is under control, diabetes patients can take fruit salads of apple, guava, papaya and watermelon. Diabetes patients can take any one fruit salad in a single day. Vegetable soups and lemon juice with artificial sweeteners can also be taken by diabetes patients.
