Ms. Calderwood and Ms. Roy were recognized for their many years of dedicated service in our last school assembly, we wish them well in their respective retirements. To our many international students, have a safe journey as you return to your home countries. Finally to our graduating class, I hope your time at Vic High has helped prepare you for a bright and meaningful future; please be safe in your celebrations. Graduating students should be aware that the Ministry of Education will be mailing Transcripts to student home addresses (the address held within our data base). Dogwood Diplomas will be mailed through the school office in late August (again, to the most recent address in our data base). If your address has recently changed, please send an updated address to our school email contact. All returning students have been given “draft” course schedules for next year. While some changes in class composition occur over the summer, most classes should stay stable. A refreshed schedule, along with some “startup” documents will be mailed in late August. Please note on these schedules, once received, the process for arranging class changes in late August. Thank you to the many people who contributed to the conversation about the future of Vic High's building. The Board has made a recommendation and we await Ministry approval. Junior Science This semester has been busy in the junior sciences! While there were many labs and engaging activities, students accomplished great things both inside and outside of the science classroom. Science 10 students completed a school wide survey on food waste and composting habits of students and staff that was then shared with the Composting and Recycling program here at Vic High. Science 9 students collected and analyzed soil around Vic High and the Fernwood Community, revealing fascinating results about the levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium in our community. Additionally, students built alien creatures to demonstrate meiosis and sexual reproduction and actively engaged in their learning through inquiry surrounding common chemical compounds and the current legal and ecological state of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Library Vic High Reads Vic High Reads 2018 was an enjoyable “battle of the books” with eleven classes presenting their chosen books to peers, teachers, and community judges in a creative way of the class’ choosing. Of the shortlisted books, Vic High students selected Fifteen Dogs by Andre Alexis as Vic High’s Book of the Year. There are multiple copies of this title and all shortlisted titles in our

school library. You can find out more about the books at https://vichighlibrary.sd61.bc.ca/our-library/vic-high-reads/ Vic High students also voted for the Students’ Choice presentation; that honor was earned by Mr. Sakiyama’s Block C English 10 class for their “live” newscast interpretation of The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel. The Judges’ Choice Award was earned by Ms. Reside’s English 11 Block A class for their spoken word and dance presentation of the historical fiction novel, Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys. Vic High Reads 2019 scheduled for May 14, 2019. Students will be invited to participate in the longlisting process that begins in the fall. Dance Alumni Returns Advance dancers were once again given the wonderful opportunity to work with a returning Alumnus—Amrit Basi. Amrit moved to Vancouver to attend UBC and work with TwoFourSeven Company, a HipHop company under the direction of Roberta Bierman. A fun and challenging class for all the dancers and so great to have Amrit back on the VHS campus. Amrit will be returning to VHS next year to set a new work on our "Platform 61" dancers. She is returning to Victoria to attend UVic as she works on her Degree in Psychology.

Stages Intensive Scholarships Kim Breiland, Artistic and Founding Director of Stages Performing Arts School, offers dance scholarships for her annual summer school which takes place at the end of August. This year's recipients are Rayn Cook-Thomas ("Platform 61") and Olivia Nugent (Grade 9—Intermediate Dance). Congratulations to both these very deserving dancers—have fun cross-training with Kim and her Faculty of amazing teachers. Fernfest "Platform 61" dancers took to the square—Fernwood Community Square—to support our Fernwood Community during their annual Fernfest. So much fun as we shared out brilliant Hip Hop pieces with an appreciative crowd of adults, children, dogs and Volunteers. It was the final performance for two of our German International students, Karl Werner and Isabel Kuhn, and a bittersweet ending to a truly remarkable season of dance for our Vic High Dance Department.

Returning Alumnus Amrit Basi working with our Advance dancers in a Hip Hop workshop. Gymnasts Guthrie and Ella share a rhythmic gymnastics’ moment with Advance dancers in final projects.

Our VHS "Platform 61" dancers rehearsed for 9 months to create a dynamic modern work called ARGON. With the financial support of BC Cultural's AIC Grant and the creative vision of choreographer Constance Cooke, a well-developed 12 minute work was created with 23 Vic High dancers. The experience offered everyone a new perspective on the trials and tribulations of the collective & the individual within the collective.

The dancer's body is the medium through which the message, idea or vision is transmitted and conveyed. It challenges all dancers to be authentic with their movement choices and responses when working & developing a conceptual piece. Constance Cooke challenged our dancers in each and every rehearsal to search for and find that authentic gesture, movement and thought. She created a non-judgmental and safe environment in which the dancers could experience and share their questions, vulnerability, insecurities and curiosity. The inert gas, ARGON, by its existence ultimately links everyone in the world past, present and future. Combine the existence & concept of ARGON, with dancers who use their bodies to express the human connection, with the skills and sensitivity of an experienced choreographer and the outcome is a meaningful 12-minute work that resonates with both the performers and audience members. Kerry Krich, Director of Victoria High Dance Department would like to extend her gratitude and thanks to the B.C. Cultural Granting Committee, choreographer Constance Cooke and VHS PAC for supporting this project.

Interview Prep

BEFORE:

• FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE CRUCIAL, so preparation is essential. You want to be calm and confident during the interview. A little “homework” can make the difference.

• DRESS WELL! Presentation counts, so plan your outfit. Clothing should be neat, clean and appropriate for the position. Dress at least a step above how you would if you had the job.

• LEARN about the employer. Do you want to work for this company? If yes, show your interest. Find out about the career field, the employer and the job requirements.

• THINK of questions you may be asked and practice with a friend (see practice questions below).

• KNOW the name and address of the interviewer. Plan your route.

• RE-READ your resume and cover letter. • BRING a folder containing

o an extra copy of your resume o a list of your references and or reference

letters o paper and pen for notes o company information and a list of

questions you have prepared ARRIVAL:

• Go alone to the interview. • Arrive early – about 10 minutes before the

scheduled time. • Be friendly and business like with everyone you

meet. • TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE AND PUT

IT AWAY! DURING:

• ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING! Be enthusiastic, energetic and confident. A good attitude can make up for a lack of experience.

• Greet the interviewer and introduce yourself. Use his/her name during the interview.

• Be ready to shake hands. Put your coat, bag, etc. over your left shoulder or arm.

• Follow the lead of the interviewer and stay on topic.

• If you don’t understand a question, it is acceptable to ask the interviewer to repeat it.

• Be attentive. Maintain eye contact and good posture and an open stance.

• At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer. If you do not already know, confirm the date they will contact you with the outcome.

AFTER:

• Send a thank you letter to show your interest in the position.

• Contact the employer if you have not heard by the set date.
