June 2016 Principal’s Message Happy Summer! This is our final report for the school year. We say “good bye and good luck” to a number of staff and our 180 grads at this time of year. We had a terrific number of gradation events this year; please see VP Gillian Braun’s report for details. Graduating students should be aware that the Ministry of Education will be mailing Transcripts to student home addresses (the address held within our data base). Dogwood Diplomas will be mailed through the school office in late August (again, to the most recent address in our data base). If your address has recently changed, please send an updated address to our school email contact. All returning students have been given “draft” course schedules for next year. While some changes in class composition occurs over the summer, most classes should stay stable. A refreshed schedule along with some “startup” documents will be mailed in late August. Please note the process for arranging for class changes in late August. The next school year will be a time of change for Vic High. We welcome two new Vice Principals: Mr. Chris Koutougos joins us having been a VP at Lambrick Park Secondary and Ms. Alissa Moore leaves Monterey Middle school as a teacher to join our Administration team. Additionally, Mr. Aaron Parker (new to our District from Chilliwack) will join our school and for the first part of the school year I will help set the team as I prepare to move to Oak Bay Secondary School at the end of January. Our teachers are exploring the changes in curriculum and the grade 9 teachers in particular are ready to move forward with the new curriculum. We will continue with our Collaboration Wednesdays (the second Wednesday morning each month from October to May; we start classes at 9:15am) to frame teacher professional teaming and to move further into the new curriculum. Vice Principal Gillian Braun is moving to Reynolds Secondary school this September. Her skills and knowledge of best practice and her patience and understanding with all students will be missed at Vic High. Ralph Walker is moving onto bigger adventures with retirement on the horizon. Ralph’s gentle, attentive and caring manner will be missed by many of our students at Vic High. Gemma Tarling and Jacob Flower gave a wonderful speech outlining the journey that these grads have taken over their four years here at Vic High. The whole class sang both the grad song (“Unwritten”- Natasha Bedingfield) and our school song “Come Give a Cheer” with vim and vigour. Staff and parents alike were proud of the accomplishments of this class. Two days later, over 180 Grads and their Guests danced the night away after a fantastic dinner at the Laurel Point Inn. This venue was a shift from our traditional Empress Hotel but it seemed like students and adults alike were drawn in by the amazing view of the water and impressive space for the Dinner Dance. Again- another fantastic evening! We wish all the Grads the best of luck in the future and thank you for all your effort and positive spirit that you brought to our school. We will miss you!

Girls Rugby This was the second year for Girls Rugby at Vic High. The team had a good mix of returning players from last year as well as an infusion of brand new players. It takes a lot of guts to join and learn a new sport, especially one with as much physical contact as rugby, and these girls had it in spades. This year’s team played in two tournaments and scored numerous tries thanks to good team efforts, showing a significant improvement over the previous year. Along the way the team lost some players due to injury, but gained some excellent late season additions and finished the year strong with 7 girls giving it their all at the year-end tournament. This team, in true Vic high fashion, showed good sportsmanship and made new friends amongst the teams they competed against. Although all members of the team grew and improved their game, the team voted Marli Lopez as the MVP of the year and Audrey Haipee as the Most Improved Player. As well, Sheena Soriano and Raja Johnston were recognized with “All Star Awards” from the League for their excellent game play and abilities. We are all looking forward to next year when we will have our first team with numerous senior players having two years of experience under their belt. This year we say goodbye to Zinenna Atkinson, Keanna Olson and Audrey Haipee, who will be missed greatly next year, but we look forward to attracting some strong willed girls to replace them. Next year's team will be our first time having a majority of our team being experienced, senior students, so it should be a big year for Vic High Girls Rugby! Listen for announcements in December/January and come join the team!

Beach Volleyball

Over the weekend of June 4th and 5th, 24 volleyball players and three teachers headed up to Parksville for a beach volleyball competition.

We headed up on Friday and stayed in a great hotel right on the water and the players enjoyed a quick and chilly dip in the ocean. The next day we headed to the beach in Parksville where our 12 teams of boys and girls players, ranging from grade 9 to grade 12, played in the sun all day. Our students did very well and improved a great deal throughout the course of the day. For some, it was their first time playing volleyball for the school and for some it was their last. The day was a great success and a lot of fun was had by everyone. We are looking forward to getting volleyball season started in the Fall! Jean Campbell Vic High Tikis Volleyball

Athletic Fundraiser The annual Vic High Athletic Fundraiser took place June 14th at the Fernwood Inn. The Vic High Rhythm and Blues band provided the entertainment and a great time was had by all. The silent auction was well received and we generated some travel money for next year’s school teams. We are looking forward to next year’s event and will give everybody lots of notice. A big thank you to all who came out and supported this event.

Dance Department Stages Summer Intensive Scholarships Kim Breiland, Artistic Director of Stages Performing Arts School offered six scholarships to our Vic High dancers in order to attend 'Stages 36th Annual Summer Dance Intensive Program'. The following Beginner and Intermediate dancers were selected: Chere Cockcroft, Rayn Cook-Thomas, Jacob Rich, Yasmin Dharampaul, Noah Gleeson and Kate Illingworth. These dancers will have the opportunity to work with Craig Hempsted, Lia Biros, Leticia Pang, Jermey Miton and Tiffany Miton from August 22nd to September 2nd for 6 hours a day of intense training. What an amazing opportunity and thanks to Kim for thinking of our Vic High dancers. Victoria High School's Musical Theatre Program

Mr. Penty and Mrs. Krich worked with 50 students from our Musical Theatre and Stage Craft classes to produce the very successful and entertaining production of "Cabaret". The cast included memorable performances from Ashlely Richter as Sally Bowles, Nick Harrison as Cliff, Jacob Flower as Ernst Ludwig, Gemma Tarling as Fraulein Kost, Lulu Martin as Fraulein Schneider, Marshall Scott as Herr Shultz and Amrit Basi as the brilliant & dynamic Emcee.

Students were accompanied by a live band under the orchestration of Mrs. Eng and assisted vocally by Maureen Archaumbalt.

Next year's production is still under careful consideration; however the musical will be produced in the first week in December thus auditions will commence as soon as school reopens in September. All students' suggestions have been considered, and it is always a question of acquiring the rights to produce as a non-profit high school production. VHS Dance Department Give-Back Program Hike for Hospice & Quadra Village Days VHS dancers sponsored the children's tent for 2016 Hospice fund-raiser. Bubble-blowing, face painting and some creative dance brought smiles and laughter for many of the participants at Fisherman's Wharf this year. It will be an annual event for our“Give Back” students as we support this very worthy Hospice Fund-Raiser.

As well, the “Platform 61” dancers performed at the family-focused Quadra Village Day on Saturday, May 7th. It is a fun day for everyone with many dance performances, community displays, child & youth activities and an awesome pancake breakfast. Funds from this annual event are recycled back into their Quadra community which includes our own Victoria High, Central Middle and George Jay Elementary families.

In the Auto Shop w/ Dancers Dance Department Expansion Directors: K. Krich & G. Leach Following a very successful year of performances, festivals, dance club and workshops the VHS Dance Department has expanded its curriculum to meet the requests of our students. Grace Leach and Kerry Krich are thrilled to know the numbers of interested & inspired students now supports 2 Beginner and 2 Intermediate Tech classes in addition to an Advance Tech class, Performance 10,11,12 (aka “Platform 61”), Choreography 11 & 12 and Musical Theatre 9-12. The mandate to cross-train our students has initiated an ever growing interest in many different dance genres. There are plans to implement a Ballet Dance Club and Salsa Dance Club (2016-17) that will run linear if the interest supports it. As well, there is some tentative discussion around a field-trip to Vancouver to participate in classes and workshops with professionals in Vancouver's commercial and professional dance/workout industry. Greater Victoria Performing Arts Dance Festival 2016 Congratulations to all our dancers on their recent presentation of the GVPA Inspiring Dancers Award, and specifically to Alex Claver as the recipient of this year's GVPA Young Choreographers Award. We are so very proud of each and every dancer that went through the rehearsal and performance experience with the spirit and gusto of professional dancers.
