Antenna.ConsiderationsRepeateroperationwithoutaduplexerrequiresthattwoantennasbeinstalled, oneforreceivingandonefor transmitting, so that the receivingantennadoesnotabsorbenergy from the transmittingantenna.Thereareanumberofways todo this,dependingontheTX/RXfrequencyseparation,andontheloca-tionsavailableforantennamounting.Ifaduplexerisused,asingleantennasufficesforbothtransmittingand receiving. Ifusinga reduced-sizeduplexer, asix-cavitymodel (minimum) is recommended.Ver-texStandard recommends theuseof theduplexer. For furtherdetails, contactyourVertexStandarddealer.

Regardlessof theabove choice, it isofparamountimportance that theantenna(s)bemountedashighand in the clearaspossible, preferablywithin line-of-sight toallrepeaterusers.Furthermore, losses inthefeedline(s)mustbeminimized, sothefeedline(s)shouldbehighquality, andas short aspossible. Ifa long feedline isnecessary, use coaxial hardlinecabletoreducelosses.

Repeaterantennasshouldhavean impedanceof50Ωattheoperatingfrequency.Whenseparatereceiveand transmit antennasareused,high-Qnarrow-bandtypesmayservetominimizeinteraction.How-ever,whenasingleantennaisusedwithaduplexer,itshouldbealow-Qwide-bandtype.

NEVER TRANSMIT WITHOUT HAVING A TRANSMIT ANTENNA CONNECTED TO THE TX ANTENNA JACK OF THE REPEAT-ER.

DC.Power.Supply.BackupForuninterruptedoperationduringpowerfailures,a12voltrechargeabletypebattery(55-Ahormorerec-ommended)maybeconnectedtotheBATTterminalpostson the rearpanel.While the repeater isoper-ating fromtheACsource,aslightchargingcurrentwillmaintainbatterycharge.IntheeventofanACpoweroutage, theautomaticpower control circuitwillautomaticallyswitchtherepeatertothebackupbattery,andoperationwillnotbeinterrupted.

Afterprolongedoperationfromthebattery, itshouldbedisconnected from the repeater and rechargedseparatelybeforere-connecting,asthetricklechargeisnot sufficient for recharginga completelydis-chargedbattery.

Never reapply AC power to the repeater with a dis-charged battery connected, as the DC startup current can damage the repeater and battery.

WhileoperatingfromabatteryorDCsupply,there-peaterrequiresapproximately7amperesat12Voltsduringtransmit.

Equipment.LocationWhile theoperating temperature rangeof the re-peater isquitebroad, thebest location isone inwhichtheairtemperaturedoesnotapproachtheex-tremesofthespecifiedrange,andonethatdoesnotchangerapidly.Makesuretoallowforfreeairflowaroundtheheatsinkontherearapronatalltimes.Inwarmclimates,therepeatershouldnotbesealedinasmallclosedroom.

Do not place equipment, books, or papers on top and bottom of the repeater. Also, provide 30 centimeters of space on either side of the repeater.

Protect the repeater fromwindand rain, andex-tremesintemperatureorhumiditythatmayshortentheusefullifeoftheequipment.Trytolocatethere-peaterinanenvironmentthatisalsocomfortableforservicepersonnel,ifpossible.
