Career training offered to reCent gradS

Beginning in August 2014, GST BOCES Adult Education and Career Services

will offer specialized career training programs to recent high school gradu-ates. Right after graduation, students can develop a marketable skill by enrolling in short-term career training. These pro-grams are designed specifically to meet the needs of local employers. Partici-pants will be prepared to enter the work-force in their chosen field after success-fully completing one of these courses. Options include Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B), Cosmetology, Electricity, Healthcare Career Pathway, Industrial Manufacturing, Practical Nurs-ing, Office Support Specialist, Precision

Machining and Welding. All other adult career training programs are open to recent graduates as well. Each program will train participants in job readiness skills such as résumé building, job search support and employment preparation. Programs range in price from $1,250 to $12,000 and many students will qualify for financial assistance. For those who do not qualify, payment plans are available. To learn more about these courses and other career training options, call 739-7905 to speak with a vocational special-ist. Pre-admission testing is required for all courses. For a program brochure and application, please go to www.gstboces.org/adulted.

Students in Toni Risboskin’s eighth-grade technology classes recently

completed a dragster design project and held the annual much-anticipated Middle School drag races. According to Ms. Risboskin, students researched aerodynamics and car design and then drew by hand sketches of their vehicle. Using the solid modeling pro-gram, Inventor 2014, students designed the body of the vehicle. After learning to safely use woodshop equipment such as a jigsaw, band saw, drill press, files and sanders, students built the vehicle bod-ies. Upon final assembly, students raced their dragsters in the hall of the technol-ogy wing. The students’ work was evaluated on meeting design specifications, creativity, aerodynamics, craftsmanship and perfor-mance. “All students were winners in going from design to production of a race car that was their own unique creation,” said Ms. Risboskin.

Fourth period top racers were (L to R) Cody Pike, Michael LaRock, Khloie Garrison and Mike Shaffer.

Sixth period top racers were (L to R) Aaron Wood, Deanna Chandler, Madison Buiniskis and Cameron Barton.

Seventh period top racers were (L to R) Max Rogers, Andrea Davis, Niccole Spallone and Dewain Talada.

Congratula-tions to Middle

School math teach-er Karin Mann and High School science teacher Stacey Coston, who recently were named New York State Master Teach-ers. The New York State Master Teacher Program (NYSMTP) seeks to iden-tify, reward and support master teachers from across the state. According to the State University of New York website, “These outstanding STEM teachers have been recognized for their commitment to profes-sional growth, learning and excellence in the classroom.” The NYSMTP recognizes the work of the highest-performing STEM teachers by

establishing an expert community dedicated to devel-oping expertise in the areas of con-tent, pedagogy and students, families and communities. Master teachers are committed to ongo-ing professional work in addition to their regular school

responsibilities, and serve as mentors and models for STEM teaching throughout the state. Mann and Coston went through a lengthy application and interview process prior to being recognized. They will receive additional professional development in their content areas as they prepare to mentor new teachers and facilitate professional develop-ment opportunities for current teachers.
