PRODUCTION NOTES

The story takes place at a time in American history that many ofus have conveniently forgotten. The Depression’s economic

turmoil led to political extremism from the left and the right. Attimes it felt as though the fabric of our society were coming apart. The rise of an unabashedly liberal president--who considered So-cialism so popular that he added its root word to a program ofguaranteed income for the elderly--led to the rise of rightwingAmerican militia, who donned brown shirts and emulated Ger-many. With cries of “America First,” radio hosts like FatherCharles Coughlin brought fascist ideas into the mainstream, to thepoint where gossip columnists regularly asked celebrities how to“solve the Jewish problem.”

In a post 9/11 world filled with a similar economic collapse, Ifound disturbing parallels between Chaplin’s time and today. But I had no idea how strong those parallels would turn out to be.

One month after I completed the first draft of the play, NorthKorea forced Sony to halt the distribution of the Seth Rogen

comedy The Interview. This was closely followed by the CharlieHebdo tragedy in Paris. And, soon, our own unabashedly liberalpresident would give rise to a modern, reactionary demagogue, railing against certain ethnic and religious groups with cries ofAmerica First. A socialist would also be a contender in this race. And they would both square off against a strong woman.

Iwrite this before the election, so the choice has already beenmade. But I hope that you, like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pick-ford, were not silent in the face of that choice, that you were notafraid to make the final call, and that you were willing to abide bythe outcome. As Chapin says, “Democracy, you know. It’s theAmerican way.”
