Hi gang, This is a 1977 photo of the WØOYH station. It sure does look different than the 1952 station. I used the Collins equipment on SSB only and worked the Kansas WX net and SB nets. I used the Triton IV on CW because of the full break-in and some times on SSB. I think at this time I was the ARRL Ks “PAM” Phone ActivityManager which is called “NM” Net Manager today.

My main nitch in ham radio has been as a tfc handler and especially as a CW traffic handler. Learning the codewas the hardest thing I ever did. I still have my military 78RPM teaching records. YEP! I said 78 RPM with Uncle Sams logo on them. I also rented one of those perforatedtape machines for a short time.

My son Kevin came to me at age 14 and said he was ready to take the Novice test. He had taught himself the code with out me knowing it. All he did was to use a B-A key and sounder to send to him self. A year later he was coping 40 WPM in his head. On field day he goes out with the Johnson County club and spends the whole Saturday night in the CW station.. He can send, log, and dupe all by himself. He has passed the OM up in the dust.

Sometimes we win. When it could not have been worse on the East Coast, we did spring at 75 degrees. It had been 80 in Salina but degraded a bit getting here. A day or two in the middle of winter makes all the difference plus giving a chance to do something that shouldn’t wait. u Hi Orlan,I hope you are doing well and not getting too much snow, we’ve had our share lately and they claim the groundhog saw his shadow! The only shadow he could have seen was a reflection from the bright snow!

I just wanted to pass along this nice recognition of Bob on the league website today.

u I got a nice pdf attachment, “Going Boldly: CW – Space, from Randy Noon KCØCCR in Hiawatha, Ks today that I want to share with you. He is active in “Fists”, U know, CW, Code, and writes articles, the latest is in the Jan/Feb CQ magazine, "Going Boldly: CW Space ------- The final Fronteer," pages 126 thro 127. I hope you have access to the CQ mag and time to read his article. If You read “Larry’s List” you will notice a lot of CW interest in our KC area. It is good to see the interest in CW and the classes starting. You might go to http://fistsna.org/ to see what “Fists” is all about.

u Larry,

Another excellent sourceI is the ARRL Code practice files. MP3s with text for checking.

u https://www.youtube.com/embed/WC8U5_4lo2c?feature=player_embedded Latest Navy's latest Drone. Gud chance U have Cn it but..................The Navy successfully conducted take-offs and landings from the nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, with a new stealth jet called the X-47B. What is so different about this plane is the fact that it is a 'drone'. It is completely unmanned. Drones come in all sizes and the X-47B is likely one of the larger ones. What is so ironic about all of this is the fact that the enemy cannot detect a plane like this in the first place. In the unlikely event they get lucky at shooting one down, there will be no human loss of life or captivity. As you view the flight deck crew signaling the plane, they are simply signaling the on-board cameras, who in turn are being manned bystaff inside the command intelligence center (CIC) on board the ship. Also check out the short distance this plane needs for a takeoff.

ARRL Honorary Vice President Bruce KØBJ Orlan,

Rod K0EQH just pointed out that Becky Jain Kersenbrock, W0VGE, was mentioned in a sidebar of August 2014 CQ. They reported that she was on the cover of the January 1956 CQ. I found that cover on the internet and Rod sent a scan of the recent CQ item.

Becky's dad Doc W0LOW became a Slient Key in 2004. He was an amateur photographer and made his own and Becky's QSLs. Becky's son Cory AB0ND lives in Ellsworth. For a while he was in the Netherlands Antilles doing RF work for Trans World Radio. A nephew, Brian Wood AA6FV works with Motorola Solutions in San Diego and has

two copies of the January '56 CQ. Brian's parents are both hams.... Doc was an effective ham ambassador.

Kansas State RACES Officer – Jim KCØNYK

Here is my article.

RACES

The post of State of Kansas RACES Officer became vacant 21 January 2015. It was an honor and privilege to have served the amateur community in our mission of protecting our citizens.

To all those who were so willing to work with the program during this year, THANK YOU! I would hope that you will work with whomever is appointed as my replacement. As for

myself, help will always be available to those who ask.

Stay safe, stay ready. See ya down the log sometime.

A lot of people have no knowledge of this.

DECLASSIFIED PHOTOS - 'B-29' "Enola Gay"

Forest Arden was the chief flight mechanic of a B-29 stationed at Tinian Island. His aircraft was parked nearby to the Enola Gay and he watched the loading procedure of the first Atomic Bomb. He said that security was strictly enforced and no one was allowed to approach to within 100 yards! Few had any inkling of what about to occur. Everyone was astounded at the sudden end of World War II.

This is an unbelievable set of photos - the REAL thing - pix from Tinian Island as the B-29 "Enola Gay" was being loaded. Notice the "Top Secret" stamp on some of the photos. In the last few pix notice the CRUDE sheet metal work on the casing and fins of "Little Boy" - the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.

u The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control,

mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstormstearing up the country from one end to another,

and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to takeGod out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

u A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.

His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut.

Then we'll talk about the car."

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."

The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long

hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."

(love the Dad's reply!)

"Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?"

4 U 2 think abt!!!Subject: [Fwd: Things to think about in the New Year]

These are reputedly based on true incidences - both wonderful and inspirational. 1. Today, I interviewed my grandmother for part of a research paper I'm working on for my Psychology class. When I asked her to define success in her own words, she said, "Success is when you look back at your life and the memories make you smile." 2. Today, I asked my mentor - a very successful business man in his 70s- what his top 3 tips are for success. He smiled and said, "Read something no one else is reading, think something no one else is thinking,

and do something no one else is doing." 3. Today, after a 72 hour shift at the fire station, a woman ran up to me at the grocery store and gave me a hug. When I tensed up, she realized I didn't recognize her. She let go with tears of joy in her eyes and the most sincere smile and said, "On 9-11-2001, you carried me out of the World Trade Center." 4. Today, after I watched my dog get run over by a car, I sat on the side of the road holding him and crying. And just before he died, he licked the tears off my face. 5. Today at 7AM, I woke up feeling ill, but decided I needed the money, so I went into work. At 3PM I got laid off. On my drive home I got a flat tire. When I went into the trunk for the spare, it was flat too. A man in a BMW pulled over, gave me a ride, we chatted, and then he offered me a job. I start tomorrow. 6. Today, as my father, three brothers, and two sisters stood around my mother's hospital bed, my mother uttered her last coherent words before she died. She simply said, "I feel so loved right now. We should have gotten together like this more often." 7. Today, I kissed my dad on the forehead as he passed away in a small hospital bed. About 5 seconds after he passed, I realizedit was the first time I had given him a kiss since I was a little boy. 8. Today, in the cutest voice, my 8-year-old daughter asked me to start recycling. I chuckled and asked, "Why?" She replied, "So you can help me save the planet." I chuckled again and asked, "And why do you want to save the planet?" Because that's where I keep all my stuff," she said. 9. Today, when I witnessed a 27-year-old breast cancer patient laughing hysterically at her 2-year-old daughter's antics, I suddenly realized that I need to stop complaining about my life and start celebrating it again. 10. Today, a boy in a wheelchair saw me desperately struggling on crutches with my broken leg and offered to carry my backpack and books for me. He helped me all the way across campus to my class and as he was leaving he said, "I hope you feel better soon." 11. Today, I was feeling down because the results of a biopsy came back malignant. When I got home, I opened an e-mail that said, "Thinking of you today. If you need me, I'm a phone call away." It was from a high school friend I hadn't seen in 10 years. 12. Today, I was traveling in Kenya and I met a refugee from Zimbabwe. He said he hadn't eaten anything in over 3 days and looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, "We can share it." As we know, the best sermons are lived, not preached. I am glad I have you to send these to. I hope you will send them on.

Oh boy, I SURE DO. and not just on ham radio, either. I firmly believe that no ONE factor led more, to the increased development of the "noise blanker" for HF receivers, than this. For those of you who know about complex-impedence matching, you'll notice the conical ends to the driven elements (where the ladder-line feeders attach)... that provides a very wide impedence matching RANGE, as the "Z" would vary quite a bit from 7 to 19 mHz. Aside from being so close to Chernobyl, it WOULD be cool to use that array for DX on 40m, 30m, 20m, & 17m. Tom - WØEAJ

It's basically the same design; the plug-in coils eliminate the need for a bandswitch, and as a result the coils are MUCH HIGHER in "Q", than would be possible with the necessarily smaller coils, as those wired to a bandswitch. Mine demonstrates "readable CW" at .045 microvolts on 80m, and similar on 40m & 20m - WELL on a par with the latest gear! Guys are STILL building these receivers and some of the "products" are simply beautiful in their construction & quality. Tom - WØEAJ
