Putnam ARC is a community based organization that offers lifelong support and opportunities for people with disabilities in the Putnam Count, New York Area. The organizational headquarters is located at

31 International BLVD, Brewster New York ,10509.

Michelle Scolaro, is a residential community director at the organization and she seeks to design a new group home called Canter Group Home for 4 adult men that are on the autistic spectrum with diverse needs, unique talents and interests. They would like to find property in Putnam Valley, NY where they can build a new adult living facility. The design will need to provide a structured and supportive environment that offers guidance and practice of life skills while maintaining autonomy.

End User Profile Client One: Male, 24 likes and plays basketball and all kinds of music. He has mobility issues and has a wheelchair. He likes to be social but focuses on what he likes so he needs more guidance in group/team activities . Client Two: Male, 30 likes to read and prefers quiet surroundings. He likes nature, animals and being outdoors. He has some mobility issues and walks with a gait. He struggles with facial cues and engaging in group activities. Client Three: Male, 22 enjoys art and computer graphics. He has no mobility issues but lacks social awareness. Client Four: Male, 28 enjoys bowling. He likes to be involved with the community. He has no mobility issues but struggles with social situations.

This icon has been transformed and reproduced in some fashion and has been come to be known as a symbol for Autism. The multi-colors of the puzzle pieces represent the diverse groups of people who have various difficulties related with the disorder like trouble with communication, social cues and behaviors which also can be represented in the arrays of color. The neutral person taking a stance can represent anyone who wants to help contribute to the quality of life of someone who has Autism. The Canter Group Home name is printed in a Century Gothic Font and the color blue is used which also symbolizes Autism. This branding will be seen throughout the design by delicately using different colors to create variety and interest but also to be reminded of our purpose.

The character of the Canter Group Home will embrace a home-like atmosphere that will create a sense of place for the end users. It will be a contemporary design with masculine details. The main color scheme will be mostly neutral but will utilize different colors to represent the diverse nature of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder and to create variety and interest. Furniture and lighting will mimic the character of the home but it will also be sustainable, durable, easy maintenance and cost effective. Daylighting, energy efficient appliances/fixtures and plumbing locations will be utilized to offer more savings in the overall design. The function of the home will follow ADA guidelines and Universal Design Principles to promote the health, safety and welfare of all occupants. Through space planning, the design of the home will plan for separate private and public spaces so that everyone can feel comfortable visiting the home but offer privacy to the end users. Staff areas will be centrally located to offer supervision but also to respond to secondary users. The design of the Canter Group home will be successful by implementing all programming needs, satisfying the budget restraints and provide a home-life feel that promotes quality of life and a sense of place. The design will meet the facility goals by offering a structured and friendly atmosphere to the end users which will help them flourish and become part of their residential community.

Justifying the solution:

The Design Concept

The character of the Canter Group Home will embrace a home-like atmosphere that will create a sense of place for the end users. It will be a contemporary design with masculine details. The main color scheme will be mostly neutral but will utilize different colors to represent the diverse nature of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder and to create variety and interest. Furniture and lighting will mimic the character of the home but it will also be sustainable, durable, easy maintenance and cost effective. Daylighting, energy efficient appliances/fixtures and plumbing locations will be utilized to offer more savings in the overall design.

The function of the home will follow ADA guidelines and Universal Design Principles to promote the health, safety and welfare of all occupants. I utilize the original design concept throughout my design and I didn’t deviate from my original thoughts. I used it as a guideline to make sure that I created a home-like design in a therapeutic setting. I also focused on the diverse needs of the clients to make sure that I had two different types of areas to accommodate their regulating behavioral needs. This was not mentioned in detail in the design concept and it evolved as the design went along. I followed ADA Standards, Universal Design Principles and Building codes to promote the health, safety and welfare of all occupants.

From the beginning, my color solution was to use a neutral color palette with splashes of color to reflect and symbolize the diverse needs of the end users with ASD. It wasn’t until the Design development phase where I did a color theory analysis to focus on color. I used a complementary color scheme using medium hues of oranges and blues to create harmony within the design so that the colors were not overwhelming to the end user.

Universal Design application was thought about in the programming phase when I did my research for code compliance. I wanted to focus on creating a design that most people could use with ease. When I was in the design development phase, I focus on choosing selections that would help the end user. For example, I specified door levers for low physical effort, provided room for side and front approach to cabinetry and fixtures, I specified cabinet pulls, electric stove with front controls, washer/dryer that have front use.

Code and egress requirements were also utilized in the design development phase where space planning the floor plan and furniture plan was critical to the success of the design. Codes is something that is always in the back of my mind at the start of any project but research begins just before the preliminary plans are created. I usually follow ADA standards but I did have a client that used a wheelchair so it was necessary to make sure I space planned accurate circulation areas so that it was comfortable for him and to also make it comfortable for everyone too. The Bubble Diagrams and Block diagrams helped during this process. It made me aware of key areas that could be potential problems if not planned accurately based on code. It was a great way to ensure that all rooms were code compliant and that there were two egresses planned in a residential home.

As for Wayfinding elements, I used exit signs and directional exit signage to ensure everyone could leave the residence while following signs. I also used the same paint color for the walls and hardwood flooring in the main circulation paths that lead out to exits. This was thought about when we did the circulation studies. We had to show the different circulation paths and this gave me the idea to use the same wall color and flooring in the main circulation path to help guide people to an exit.

Environmental design choices are my first choice since I studied sustainable design. I find that most manufacturers and retailers provide a sustainable choice for FF&E so it is easy to specify sustainable materials. I also utilize daylighting and controlled daylighting efforts with a solar panel shade. Both are the best and efficient way to save on energy. This is always thought about and planned in the programming phase and is utilized throughout the design.

Furniture selections were design to be economical, easy to clean, comfortable and durable. This was thought about during the thesis and the end users needs. The primary source, Michelle Scolaro helped me with that and mentioned how important it was for it to be economical, durable, comfortable. And, it had to be easy to be cleaned, so all specifications focused on those criteria.

The finish selections were used to create a home like feel to the group home. I used sustainable paint and a neutral color palette. Crown molding and base molding was used to create a typical residential feel-to give it a high end appeal. The whole point was to create that home-like feel.

I specify a beautiful entry door instead of a typical door because it was the first thing you see when you’re approaching the home. I wanted it to be familiar and typical of a residential home.

The lighting was designed to provide additional lighting that did not come from daylighting source. It was to be functional for either general or for task but it had to have a home-like appeal to it to drive home the design concept.

I created the built-in book shelf and seating area for the quiet/reading room because I wanted to offer a nice area to go to unwind. What better way to unwind by sitting by a beautiful window and relaxing while reading a book.

Overall the design was successful because I utilized the thesis as a guideline to create a beautiful group home that had home-like appeal while providing the necessary support needed for them to be independent and have a place of their own. The group home is situated in a residential area to provide connectivity to their immediate community and foster that internal drive to enjoy life.

Reflecting

My initial research revealed that people with Autism have many different difficulties that are with them throughout their lifespan and a design was need to support their needs while providing a home like atmosphere in a Group Home setting. It was a huge task because they had physical mobility issues, issues with socializing; communication is often difficult because they have a hard time reading facial cues and repetitive behaviors like stemming.

So there was a lot to consider when designing a group home that creates a calm environment that could tackle some of these needs while providing a supportive environment to help promote a sense of self. Wow! This was a tall order. I reached out to Putnam ARC and Greystone community programs to help guide me in designing for people with a disability like Autism. There tremendous help and suggestions made the difficult task easier to handle. They told me what their needs were and the research guided me in creating a home-like atmosphere for them because that is what made them feel the best. When end-users are in a structure and familiar place, it is one less thing they have to process so understanding their needs really helped in the overall design. Once I had those ideas going, the vision opened up and I utilize the programming phase to start the design solution and for there it snow balled into a beautiful and successful design.

I think utilizing each phase of the design so was instrumental in tackling this project. The Schematic Phase really helped me to see the different adjacency requirements and all the necessary rooms needed and the required circulation paths. From there a design concept formulated which brings us into the design development when you’re thinking code compliance, color theory and what colors will create a neutral and relaxing home-like feel. The sketches really helped me to see how the furnishings and volume of space is used which helped in the design of the two needed rooms. The music/art room needed to have an open feel so the vaulted ceiling design was perfect for that and the drop ceiling in the reading/quiet room addressed the need for a small space which all this knowledge helped in the FF&E selections which finally bought me to the construction documents and the final design solution.

By utilizing all the phases of design and slowly use all the design tools, I was able to make a successful design that hopefully will be utilized by my community. I really enjoyed creating a design that could benefit those on the Autistic Spectrum.
