BOYS BASKETBALL

The 2014-15 season was a strong learning, competitive season. The Varsity team this season was very young (6 soph-omores, 6 juniors, 2 seniors). The team battled in a very tough Patriot Conference and competed strong enough to defeat the tournament champions, South County, twice during the season. Since the team was so young, a lot of play-ers were able to contribute and learn throughout the year. The team finished 3rd place in the Falls Church Holiday tournament and split their games during the start of the season tip-off tournament. Jamie Sara led the team in points, rebounds & steals. Chris Cheng led the team with 55 3-pointers made (10th in the DC Metro area). Khalil Williams led the team in assists and was 2nd in scoring while starting every game of the season at point guard.

Team Record: 8-15 Team Awards: MVP: Jamie Sara Coaches Award: Khalil Williams Most Improved Player – Chris Cheng Best Rebounder – Jamie Sara Best Defender – Jamie Sara Coaching Staff: Head Coach: David Houston III (Patriot Conference Co-Coach of the year) Assistant Coach: Tyrone Strother, Dr. David Houston Jr,Justin Baker JV: The 2014-15 season was a unique one for the boys basketball program at West Potomac. Six sophomores ended up playing on the varsity team, including Da’Jon Bellfield and Mark Ellis who began the year as members of the JV. While this group of kids should form a strong nucleus for the future, it presented our team with a challenge and forced other members of the sophomore class to step up in the absence of their classmates. Our team was able to be com-petitive in a difficult league and ended up finishing the year with a record of 6-10. Some highlights of our season were our road wins at Mount Vernon, at South County, and at Annandale. A source of pride for us throughout the year was our team defense, which kept us in games and enabled us to hold all of our league opponents to their lowest point total of the year. We were led by our captain and Coach’s Award winner Luke Lash who led our team in minutes played and did a great job taking care of the ball as our point guard. Trevin Armstrong led our team in scoring and had numerous standout performances including a 25 point game in our win at South County. Freshman Jake Mazzoccoli also made significant contributions as a low post scorer and our leading rebounder. Team Record: 3-13 Coaches Award: Luke Lash

Freshman: Despite a rough start to the season, the Boys Freshman Basket Ball team rebounded and gelled together and accomplished many of our goals. Our longest winning streak was three games and that was accomplished in the same week. We beat our long time rival T.C. Williams who was 13-0 at the time. We finished strong, winning two of our last three games and really came together as one team instead of individuals. I’m proud of the group and wish them the best going forward.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

A very young WP Varsity Girls basketball team played a tough schedule against many top 25 teams

in the area. There were many bright spots throughout the season including going into overtime

with local powerhouse Mount Vernon, beating Lee in overtime at their place, and battling toe to

toe with the dynasty local program West Springfield HS (at WSHS). The girls adjusted to an entirely

new coaching staff and system. As a young team, we hope to improve on our accomplishments

this year and make many more next year! While the season ended sooner than we wanted, I truly

couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to coach.

JV: The JV Girls basketball team finished 10-6 after a successful finish over Lake Braddock and An-

nandale! The highlight of the season came with several big wins over top teams like South County

early on, and Woodson late in the season. A very young team, the JV girls are looking forward to

yet another successful season in 2015-2016 and have proven to be a dedicated and hard-working

group of young student-athletes.

Freshman: The Girl’s Freshmen Basketball team completed the 2013-14 school year with a 7-9

record. This team could have easily have been 9-7 with two close losses. After being up on West

Springfield by 12 points, the young team succumbed to a late full-court press and lost by 1 point.

In a close game against TC Williams High School, this young team lost a nail biter by three points.

This was a young freshmen team with only five of the twelve players having any organized basket-

ball experience. This lack of experience showed as the team got off to a slow start (starting the

season 1-3). However, as the young players improved so did the performance of the team. I be-

lieve this was a successful season.

RIFLE

The Rifle Team completed another record setting season this year. The season started with

the addition of eight new freshman team members. This doubled the team size to 15 shooters,

the largest team ever and prepares the team to continue its success into the future. With the

support of additional volunteer coaches, the team increased practice to four nights a week, to

accommodate all of the team members. During the season team members practiced hard to

increase their personal best scores and the team established a new school record with a score

of 1121. The team shot its way to a 6-3 season record with a fourth place finish in the Potomac

High School Air Rifle League Championships. Team member Grayson Wheeler was named to

the PHSRL All-Metro Second Team and team members Jack Apperson, Andy Knight, Dominic

Mancini, Connor McPherson and Chris Quin all received All-Metro Honorable Mention recogni-

tion. This is the largest number of team members to receive All-Metro Honors in a single.

The season in still underway with the team participating in the NRA National Junior Indoor Air

Rifle Championships. The results of these matches will be announced in May. In last year’s

match, the team finished eighth in the Non-Military Scholastic Team Division and our highest

shooter finished in 25th place, in this national match. A team member also received a

$1000.00 scholarship from the Civilian Marksmanship Program and the Ft. Hunt Sportsmen

John C Frey Most Valuable Athlete Honorable Mention Award.

WINTER TRACK

Who would have thought after all of the snow days and sporadic practices in freezing temper-atures that the Winter Track Team would produce quite a few standout performances? To have produced the outcomes that the Winter track team achieved requires a consistent workout regimen week in and week out. In the earlier going there was a lot of discourage-ment and hopelessness because our athletes were not achieving where they thought they should be. But our athletes dug deep with determination, perseverance and resolve to push through all the adversity that the elements could throw at them. They continued to show up on sub 30 degree days and holidays determined to improve; and they did just that. We had athletes to PR in the specialized events and qualify for regionals and states. Most of the fruits of their labor were displayed in the performances they gave in the conference championship. With this new found success through hard work and a disciplined mind state our track ath-letes hope to carry their winter accolades into the spring season to reach new heights and better successes.
