Waddell Elementary School Media Center OrientationMolly Brubaker (Reese)Media Specialist

Welcome to your media center! This is the place where you will learn, explore, have fun, and lots more every week! I am so excited that you are here! Lets take a look around!1The BasicsBusiness Hours 8:30 3:00Open door policy As long as the door is open you are always welcome! You must have a pass or note from your teacher to visit the library If you have questions Ask!

There are four major rules to the media center. First of all, the doors will open at 8:30 and you are welcome all day long until 3:00. If you need to stay later than 3:00 to do research, that is okay Just ask! I have an open door policy. What does that mean you might ask? Well as long as the door is unlocked, you are welcome to come inside! Please make sure that you have your library pass from your teacher when you come to the library. This is for your safety, I need to make sure that your teacher knows you are with me when you come. If you come without permission, your teacher will be worried and looking for you. If you ever have any questions while you are in the library feel free to ask me anything! 2Library Layout

I think we have a pretty cool library, but it can get kind of hard to find your way around if you do not know what you are looking for! This is our library layout, we have book cases, computers, tables, carpets and A LOT of books! Lets take a closer look! 3Tables and Chairs

These are your tables and chairs. At these tables you can read silently, do research, or complete an assignment. Each table is labeled with a number and a letter. There are 8 tables with 4 chairs at each table. Please do not move the chairs from table to table. You are welcome to sit at these tables any time, they are here for you! 4Computer Center

Currently, we have six student computers in the library. We are working hard to get some more but right now they are located around the corner in between the easy fiction books. The computers are a first come, first serve basis and you should only use them for Destiny Quest, research, or AR tests. No games unless Mrs. Bru gives you permission. Destiny Quest is the computer program that we use to locate books. I will be teaching you guys how to use this program within the next few weeks. 5Fiction BooksTwo sections Easy Fiction labeled with an E Fiction labeled with FIC These are stories that not real or are make believe. Examples: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, The Cat In The Hat, The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Fiction books are stories that are not real or are make believe. We have two sections of fiction books in our library. We have a section called Easy Fiction which is mostly picture books, and then we also have a regular fiction section along the back wall which is composed mostly of chapter books. 6Easy Fiction Section

The easy fiction section can be found on what I like to call the short shelves. These are the shelves that no matter what grade you are in, these shelves are shorter than you! These books are in alphabetical order starting with A and going all the way to Z! These books are labeled with and E and then the first three letters of the authors last name. For example; Dr. Seuss books are labeled with and E Seu. 7Fiction Section

The regular fiction section is located along the back wall. These books are marked simply with an FIC and then the first three letters of the authors last name. For example Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling are labeled FIC Row. They are in alphabetical order from left to right. 8Non Fiction Books2 Sections Easy Non Fiction Labeled ENF ###Non Fiction Labeled with a numberBooks that are true, they state facts

Non Fiction books are true or factual. They are also called informational texts. You gain knowledge by reading them. Similarly to the fiction books we have two sections. The Easy Non- Fiction section and the regular Non-Fiction section. Most of the easy non-fiction books are on a K-5 level and the regular non fiction books are anywhere from a 3rd grade to a 12th grade! 9Easy Non Fiction Section

The easy non fiction books are located on the tall shelves beside the tables. These books are labeled with an ENF followed by their Dewey Decimal number. They are in order based on their Dewey Decimal number starting from 0 and going though the 900s. 10Non-Fiction Sections

The regular non fiction section wraps around the room tracing the tables. The smaller numbers start immediately after the ENF books and they wrap around next to the reference section stopping at the 500s. The 600s pick up in the back of the room next to the teachers work room and wrap around the corner stopping at the 900s next to the regular fiction books. These books are labeled and ordered by their Dewey Decimal number. 11Reference

Reference books are great tools for research, rather you are looking up a definition or a destination these two sets of shelves are your one stop shop. They are labeled with and REF. These books are only available for one night check out. 12Biographies

Interested in learning about a specific person? Well the biography section is for you. These books are labeled with a B and then the first three letters of the persons last name. These books are located on the back wall in the corner next to the door. They are in order alphabetically by last name. 13Reading Carpet and Smart Board

The carpet is where most of our lessons will take place. We will use the Smart Board almost every lesson and you will sit on the carpet each time. The carpet is a quiet area where I ask that you only speak after being called on. This is where a lot of the learning happens! 14Circulation Desk

The circulation desk is located front and center as soon as you walk into the media center. This is where you will check in and out your books. There are two computers on the circulation desk, the one of the right is the check in computer. You will check in your books and place them on the cart, go find more books, and then use the computer on the left for check out. Because we do not have lunch cards this year we are using this notebook for check out. You will scan your name and then your books to check them out! The process is very easy! Students are allowed to check out 2 books for up to 2 weeks at a time! 15Parent Resources / News Room

This is the parent resource room. Your parents can come and check out educational games, books, or workbooks to help you with your homework! This also the room where the we broadcast WRTS live. If you are a 4th or 5th grader we will hold auditions twice a year. I hope to see you there. If you are in K-3rd you will watch every morning and you may audition once you reach 4th grade! 16See you soon!

I know that was quick and pretty brief, but I promise you will get the hang of it! I will be here if you have any questions! I hope I see everyone really soon! 17
