PERSPECTIVE
Architecture was a major that was very intriguing to me in my youth. Throughout the years I have learned that architecture is not a one track career field that is defined and prescribed; architecture has a variety of perspectives and ideas that come together to create meaningful spaces for people to occupy. My undergraduate education at Judson University has opened my eyes to many different ways in which architecture can be viewed. From those views, I have generated an understanding of how I see architecture today and what it truly means to me. These ideas shape how I think about design and reflect the type of architect I want to become.
EMPOWERING
Architecture not only gives the client what they want, but it also gives them a sense of pride and something to be proud of. In some cases, architecture gives a person a sense of place in society and allows them to be more engaged with the people around them. Architecture that encourages client participation allows architecture to exceed beyond functional qualities and enhances the psychology of the people who inhabit it.
CONTEXTUAL
Architecture is something that cannot be separate from the culture or place. The type of architecture being built is a sign of the cultural direction of a place. With that being said, it is not “placeless.” Each project should have a specific function for a specific site that gives it life and meaning. “Site-less” architecture is something that is built for its image not for its functional role in a culture.
EXPERIENTIAL
Architecture is a place in which spaces and environments can change and evoke different sensations. Although it is a static object, the empty space in it creates opportunities for phenomenal experiences to happen. Light, shadow, form, anything, it all is a result of architecture. The spaces that are created from architecture allow for a user to interpret their own sensations or the architecture itself provides sensations it wants you to feel. This is something I experienced in the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany.

Envision ElginElgin, IL
Envision ElginElgin, ILEnvision Elgin is a project that was a multi-use high rise located in the city of Elgin. This high rise is made up of street level retail, community space, restaurant, theater, conference center, office, and residential. The first two levels of the tower were derived from contextual constraints such as pedestrian traffic, vehicular traffic, and many other factors. The tower portion was created in response to having a large building in a small city. By having a solid/void formal expression, breaking down the scale of the building was much easier and helped it fit in its context.

Christian Church DesignBarrington, ILChristian Church Design is a project meant to provide a new church for a growing congregation in the Chicago-land area and to also provide ancillary spaces as well. My church was derived from a previous assignment where we looked at the Tabernacle narrative in Exodus. From that, my concept of the Exclusivity of God and Privilege of Man was derived. The atrium space provides natural light in the sanctuary and is a beacon of light representing Gods presence.

Minimal System ChurchesCosta Rica, Honduras, Bolivia, GambiaThe minimal system churches project dealt with designing buildings for third world countries with limited resources. I was tasked with designing a building for each site starting with a simple shape. I choose to design churches for all five sites. My concept was purify, meaning not yet pure. From that concept I decided to use a circle because it is the most pure form. It is also representative of God and how the circle represents wholeness with Jesus Christ.

RiverkeeperSt. Charles, ILA Riverkeeper is a person or organization that seeks to advocate, educate and innovate the ecosystems in and around rivers. The Riverkeeper I designed is meant to be free and open to move however one likes and thats what drove my concept of fluidity. Everyone is an individual and sees things differently, so they should have the freedom to explore at their own pace and that lead me to break up the program into separate buildings instead of one main one.

Residential Project
The residential project was a personal project I did over the summer in my free time. This was my first time using Sketch-up and using its tools. This is a modern residential house made up of concrete, glass and wood. The idea behind this project was to take a simple box and start subtracting 10’ by 10’ cubes from that box, defining different room elements. In order to separate private from public space, I pushed back the interior wall to create a recessed path to allow for access to the kitchen and lofted bedrooms.

Shelter ProjectJakarta, IndonesiaThe shelter project was a project designed to fulfill the needs of the Indonesian people after a tsunami destroyed their home. This started as in individual phase, each class member generating a concept that fit their idea. Of the individual concepts, six were chosen and then developed more until the final iteration. The final build team was made of three colleagues and I. We saw the initial to final design come through and competed with it in Arkansas to bring new ideas to World Vision.

2 - Rain Collection
Two separate areas not only give users the freedom to manage the interior spaces according to their preferences but also allow for gender-specific space division in Indonesian domestic culture.
1 - Adaptability
In the center of the roof of each pod is a hole for rain collection as well as ventilation.
3 - Fabric/Reed Skin
The compound system of fabric overlaid in parts with reeds allows for maximum ventilation, is lightweight and is easily replaceable with local materials.
4 - Metal Joints
Stronger than normal PVC joints, the joints are universal making it easy for PVC-replacement bamboo to be used. The two custom joints, one for the top and one for the bottom, can easily be mass produced.
5 - Flooring
The Eventdeck flooring is perforated for drainage, is durable, can be assembled quickly and contours to the shape of the ground.
6 - PVC
Strong, light and durable, the PVC poles make up most of the structure and can be easily replaced with local materials, such as bamboo.
7 - Tension
The tension ropes in the wall and roof systems prevents racking, further strengthening the entire system.
28
Fabric sheathing with reed coverings for windows gives vernacular aesthetics to the shelter and provides the users with a sense of the traditional dwellings that they are accustomed to. Reed coverings, which can be rolled up and down, control sunlight and ventilation. They allow moderate amount of light and air in to the interior. The light, neutral color of the fabric is a good reflector of sunlight in tropical Indonesian weather and also gives the shelter a pleasing aesthetic. A hole at the center of the roof alternatively serves the purposes of either rain collection or ventilation.
The interior is designed to provide users with a comfortable amount of space to move around and sleep. Head clearance of 6’9” makes the interior neither too confined nor too lofty for the users. Two separate spaces give users the option to have separate areas for males and females since some parts of Indonesian domestic cultures are sensitive about separate genders in shared living space.

Architectural Drawing + Europe Study TourItaly, Czech Republic, Germany, NetherlandsThe architectural drawing section was from a class that focused on perspective and how that gives buildings life and dimension. The KROB drawing that I replicated below shows how there is a dynamic cohesion between something perspectively driven and something that is natural and gestural. The Europe Study Tour sketches were an exercise in understanding how to draw in the moment and be able to capture moments that have a scale and proportion to its context.
