Parent Teacher Evening

Our first Parent/Teacher interviews to allow you to consult with

your child’s teachers will be held on Tuesday 2 April. Teachers will

be available for interview by appointment from 4:00pm until

7:00pm. Interviews will be conducted in the Currie Hall and Gym

and are of seven-minute duration. To co-ordinate the interviews

we are using an online booking system to assist parents in securing

their preferred interview times. The procedure is as follows:

• If you wish to see any of your child’s teachers, you need to secure

an appointment time using this system. If you do not have access

to the internet your local library may be able to help, or

alternatively you can call the school office.

• The booking system will only be accessible from tomorrow,

Tuesday 26 March through to 12:00pm on Tuesday 2 April. No

interview requests will be accepted outside of these times.

• In your web browser, type in the school website

click the link for 'Parent Teacher Portal' and follow the instructions.

The Tomorrow Man Workshops

The Tomorrow Man team is in Wagga Wagga again this year and

this Friday 29 March all Year 10 students at Wagga Wagga High

School will be participating in these exciting workshops sponsored

by Riverina Bluebell and Gotcha4Life. Boys and girls will be

separated into small groups to participate in sessions where

expectations and rules about gender stereotypes will be broken

down, students will make connections with those around them and

focus on their own resiliency as part of building solid support

networks for the future. There is no charge for the workshops and

all students are expected to attend as key PDHPE and Wellbeing

outcomes will be covered.

Wellbeing & Cyber Bullying

This week, students will participate in Wellbeing Lessons that raise

awareness about bullying. Tim Burke, Youth Liaison Officer, from

Wagga Police will present to students and remind them about

being safe online and the potential dangers of cyber bullying. In

our class Wellbeing lessons, we will be building upon the anti

bullying message introduced last year. The lessons are designed to

initiate conversation and awareness. Students will be

provided with strategies to cope with difficult situations and build

positive relationships. There is further documentation for parents

regarding this, if interested, at the end of this newsletter.

Thank you to the volunteers who assisted with the primary school

Touch Football day. Maisy Condon, Milly Lucas and Brandi

Meriton spent the day refereeing and being role models for the

younger players.

Year 12 Fundraising

A massive thank you to Year 12 for their mammoth fundraising

efforts over this past week. The Bunnings BBQ netted close to

$1,600 with students backing up on Thursday at the athletics

carnival to raise over $600 cooking bacon & egg rolls and the ever

popular sausage sandwich. We couldn’t have done it without the

generosity of the community: The Red Mandolin; Wagga Catering;

Woolworths; Coles and Ferndale who all donated goods. Thank you

to our parents who donated time and

materials and of course Year 12 with

approximately 30 students ensuring

the success of these events. With this

commitment, the Year 12 formal and

gift should be epic!

CSU Parent Information Evening – CSU are running a parent

information evening for parents of year 12 students and current

Year 12 students, across our CSU campuses next month. The

Wagga campus parent information evening will be held

on Wednesday March 27 at 5.30pm.

UNSW Medicine Information Evening for senior students

considering a career in Medicine, Wednesday 22 May, 2019

beginning at 5.15pm at Lecture Theatre, UNSW Rural Clinical

School, Harvey House, Docker St Wagga Wagga. Current medical

students, graduates & interns will be in attendance to discuss their

experience as also.

La Trobe University (Open Day) If you are considering La Trobe

University, their Experience Clever program is running on the 12

April on campus. This program will give you an insight on university

life and being a student.

Painting the change rooms at the WWHS Oval

When: Sunday, 31 March 2019 at 9:30am

Please come in your painting clothes to help paint

the final coat in the change rooms at the school oval.

Access the change rooms via the driveway after the

oval, you can drive right up to the change rooms. If

you have a paintbrush and an old ice-cream

container or the like, please bring them with you! We

envisage that we will be painting for a couple of

hours.

Bunnings BBQ The P&C have been successful in

obtaining a Bunnings BBQ on Sunday, 19 May 2019.

If you and/or your friends are able to donate an

hour or two of your day to help cook or sell

sausages we would love to hear from you. We will

be selling sausages from 9am-4pm, please let me

know when you would be able to help

Fact sheet

What is bullying?Bullying has three key features. It:

■ involves a misuse of power in a relationship

■ is ongoing and repeated, and

■ involves behaviours that can cause harm.

Bullying can also occur online. This is known as cyberbullying, which is using technology such as the internet or mobile devices to bully someone. It can include sending abusive texts and emails, posting hurtful messages and putting inappropriate comments on pictures of others.

Bullying of any kind is not acceptable in NSW schools, whatever the reason. Schools are committed to working with parents, staff and students to prevent bullying and respond quickly and effectively if it does occur.

What can you do if your child has been bullied?Listen calmly and get the full story Your child needs to know that they are being heard. Their feelings matter and their concerns should be taken seriously. Encourage your child to talk about what happened. Explain to your child that reporting the bullying is okay.

After listening to their concerns, ask questions to get more details if needed: who, what, where, when.

Reassure your child that they are not to blame Children may blame themselves and this can make them feel even worse. Say supportive things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with’, or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should feel safe at school’.

Ask your child what they want to do – and what they want you to do It is important to help your child to find their own solution as this will help them feel that they have some control over the situation.

If your child is not in any immediate danger and they feel confident, they could try these strategies:

■ Ignore the bullying.

■ Turn their back and walk away.

■ Act unimpressed or pretend they don’t care.

■ Say “No” or “Just stop!” firmly.

If the bullying happened at school, support your child to tell a teacher. If your child wants to talk to someone other than the school or you think added support would help, you could tell them to go to the Kids Helpline website. They can also call for free on 1800 55 1800.

When do I contact the school? Your child may be reluctant for you to speak to school staff. Discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help.

If needed, make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher. You could also ask to talk with the principal.

Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.

Support for parents and carers Kids Helpline also has a parent line with trained teams who provide support, information and counselling for parents of children aged 0-18 years. You can call them for the cost of a local call from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 4pm to 9pm on weekends on 1300 1300 52.

Telephone interpreter serviceIf you would like to contact the school or Parent Line NSW and need assistance with English please call the telephone interpreter service on 131 450, tell them what language you need and ask the operator to make the call. The operator will get an interpreter on the line to assist you with your conversation. You will not be charged for this service.

Cybersafety for students

How to behave online Staying safe online is partly up to how you behave. Think about:

• How am I portraying myself to others and why?

• Do I treat others respectfully? Do I treat others as I would like to be treated?

• How do I make decisions about my behaviour when online?

• What message am I giving the world with my photos online?

• What is the impact on me? My family and friends?

• How would I feel if my information or images were seen by others?

• Have I kept my personal details private?

• Who knows my passwords and my numbers?

• How do I respond to inappropriate behaviour from others?

Bullying online (cyberbullying) Bullying online (sometimes called cyberbullying) is using technology to deliberately and repeatedly bully someone else. It can happen to anyone, anytime, and can leave you feeling unsafe and alone.

Bullying online can include:

• abusive texts and emails

• posting unkind messages or images

• imitating others online

• excluding others online

• inappropriate image tagging.

Bullying online can be offensive and upsetting and you don't have to put up with it.

If you are being bullied, stay CALM and THINK clearly: • Do not respond to the message when you're angry or upset.

• Tell someone: a parent or carer, relative, adult friend or teacher.

• Ask your teacher if your school has a policy in place to deal with bullying if it happens online.

• You can speak to someone online at Kids Helpline http://www.kidshelp.com.au/ or call them (free) on 1800 55 1800.

Protect yourself on the phone • Give your phone number to friends only.

• Keep your mobile phone away from those who shouldn't have your phone number.

• Use ID blocking on your phone to hide your number when you call others.

• Think about whether it is appropriate to send your messages or make a call.

• Regularly check privacy settings on your mobile phone

• For help use the privacy features on your phone call your mobile company's customer care number.

Protect yourself on social networking sites • Regularly check and re-set the privacy settings on your social networking

profiles

• Most social networking profiles start with minimum privacy; make sure you select the settings you need to share your personal information only with those you want to.

• Don’t share your passwords, even with friends.

• Think about whether you would want other people to see your images; some images should not be posted in public places.

Report it • Keep records of calls or messages that are offensive or hurtful.

• Visit the Office of the eSafety Commissioner's Report Cyberbullying section at https://www.esafety.gov.au/complaints-and-reporting/offensive-and-illegal-content-complaints/report-offensive-or-illegal-content for advice about reporting and direct links to social network and online gaming websites reporting pages.

• If you are physically threatened call the police in your state or territory.

• Report serious online bullying to https://www.esafety.gov.au/complaints-and-reporting
