Director’s Report - Summer 2016The Chapter Tee Shirts have arrived…..finally you all say lol. I must admit that it has been a long process but it has been well worth the wait. Head in to Road and Sport to check them out. It’s great having both short and long sleeved shirts available and I’ve heard many a good comment about them so, thank you to those who have already purchased them.

As for our rides and events over summer, they have been well represented. Deane and Janice did a fabulous job of arranging last year’s 25th anniversary celebration. We’ve had great numbers attending our rides including the Gentle Annie weekend away led by Mark and Ash. Well done to anyone and everyone that plans these rides and events for us. We only have one Wednesday night ride left on this year’s calendar so remember to join John Burr and Mark Gatchell who are heading to Te Poi on the 23rd.

March is a busy month with the inaugural Frankton Thunder happening March 5-6 in and around the streets of Frankton. This event has been promoted to all motorcycle enthusiasts as well as some car groups. Trev has been working on establishing the

Chapters presence at the event and Deane is taking a ride that concludes within the event compounds.

The following weekend we have the second Iron Run event being held in Paihia. There are plenty of people heading north so I trust you’ll all have a great time exploring and experiencing what Harley Davidson will be providing for this year’s event. I know Barry, Shelley and the team at Road and Sport will be working hard to make sure the event is successful.

Finally, I took my last HOG ride as Road Captain last month. I have travelled to many great locations over the years and it’s been a real pleasure to lead you on those rides. We have a great team of Road Captains and Tail End Charlies so please remember to thank them for what they do for the Chapter. We’re all volunteers and everyone likes the odd pat on the back.

Thanks and until next time.Ride and have funSteven Richardson

Chapter Ride Card Draws How many of us like to win?? How about winning a $20 voucher? When you come along on a Chapter ride, rider or pillion, you will notice the Road Captain with a pack of playing cards offering Chapter members the chance to draw a card from the pack. The winning card prize is a $20 voucher and the chance to provide the write up on the ride for the Chapter’s newsletter - the HOGWASH. The write up is optional. But what isn’t optional is the winner being a current financial member of the Chapter. The Road Captain relies on the honesty of those drawing a card that they are a current paying member of the Waikato/BOP HOG Chapter.

Is it Friday yet?I want to ride!

Waikato/BOP Dinner in the Bay - 16th December 2015

Viaduct ride - Saturday 20th January 2016Road captain; Paul HookerTail end charlies; Mat Peace and Julie Adams.Following the latest Orientation day meeting held on Saturday 20th Feb (at which three new members were introduced to our chapter), Julie and I took up our TEC duties for the Auckland Viaduct and dinner ride. Unfortunately none of the new riders could join us, but I am sure that they will be taking part in some of the up and coming rides in the near future. One of our riders gave us the news that they has heard that the traffic in Auckland was diabolical, apparently to due to the Chinese Festival and Auckland Pride Festival. I was starting to regret not wearing my leather chaps and studded collar (wink wink), but hey, I would still make the most of it.At Approx. 4pm (after Paul gave us his Road Captain briefing) 9 bikes set out for the Auckland motorway, and our first stop and card draw in Mercer.Directly in front of me was Pete on his Breakout and his lovely partner Cheree on her Street, but wait Cheree, where’s the L Plate? Hooray, that portion of her bike license is over, phase two to go and then a big block, ah Cheree? At Mercer we pick up Penny and Mark to make a total of 11 bikes heading north.Yours truly gets the honor of penning the article this time through, lucky you. (Julie reckons it’s about time I worked for some of my HOG winnings anyway, ha).Out from Mercer and straight up the motorway into the Auckland traffic, and although we had a few crawling spots, it actually wasn’t as bad as we thought it was going to be, and we all arrived safely (and together) at the Viaduct ready for a refreshment and something to fill the stomachs (and not a leather clad pride parade dweller in sight). After a great meal and catch up with fellow Hoggies at the Ohara bar and restaurant, we saddled up to head back down the motorway for our final goodbyes and fuel stop at the Autobahn service stop. Much to our delight the traffic was even more flowing on the way down. After fueling up, and some handshakes, kissing and hugging, we mounted our steeds (Julie and I swapped bikes for a laugh….man…it’s different riding with suspension) and head for home going our separate ways at Taupri. After approx. 250kms, Julie and I arrived home just before 10.00pm with so many bugs that we could barely see out the helmets (Ahhhh! Love rural night riding)All in all a great evening’s ride and some awesome company (as always) even managed to grab a few snaps since our chapter photographer was M.I.ATill next time everyone, be safe and, Roll on Iron Run, Yeah!!!Mat Peace MHTEC ….(Most Honorable Tail end Charlie).

We held our final Dinner for the year at the Brooklyn Patio & Eatery on the Strand in Tauranga last night & what a night it was. 18 Hoggie friends were out for the night to catch up & talk about the great year of riding we’ve all had & the summer ahead.

Was great to check out & admire Mike & Shell’s new Road Glide & Kevin & Lisa’s new Ultra Limited. These touring bikes & baggers sure are becoming very popular within the Hog group. Out of towners Steve & Tessa came all the way from Whakatane – Awesome.

After a bit of mingling Chris welcomed everybody there & thanked them for supporting the rides throughout the year, we played dice to determine the lucky winner of the $40 Countdown Voucher – First up was Ash & he threw an 11. Man that was going to be hard to beat with just two dice. But no, another 11 from Lisa & Chris so a throw off was to be had. Great excitement all around the table – Ash up first & threw another 11 – and that was the winning throw for the round. So Ash was very pleased with himself – I suggested that he might like to buy beer, or flowers or ..........maybe even chocolate.....

The food was delish. Thanks Shirley for recommending the venue – always handy to have a food rep amongst us. We all had a fun night & I will look forward to our next Dinner in the Bay in February.

Chris & I are both looking forward to the Christmas get together with Family & Friends & of course getting out on our bike and enjoying this beautiful country in which we live in.

Happy holiday to all – Happy Christmas & Cheers to a Happy 2016 ahead.

Ride safe & Stay Upright

Tina

Matamata ride - 6th January 2016We set off from Hamilton via Scotsman Valley for dinner at the Horse and Jockey in Matamata, 7 bikes set off from Road and Sport and picked up Mark and Donna at Newstead.

Had a great ride through the valley, no traffic makes it a delightful ride and the weather was perfectWe arrived at the Horse and Jockey to see the Tauranga lot and two locals, Liz and Bruce sitting outside having a quiet drink. We ordered dinner, which took a while and wasn’t worth the wait!!

We headed home at approx 8.15pm. The Hamilton lot headed back via the main road and the Tauranga lot back over the hill, again, not much traffic. It was a great ride. Thanks to Dave for being my TEC.Mandy Ngatai won the card drawer, well done.

Brian LeggRoad Captain

We set off from Road and Sport on time with 8 bikes, picking up two in Pirongia. Went through to Te Kuiti and had morning tea at Boscos. From there, onto Whakamaru through Bennydale, awesome roads with not much traffic. We arrived at Whakamaru at approx 12.45pm, had lunch and a good catch up.

We were off to Five Stags in Cambridge through the Old Taupo road over Arapunui dam and up the south side of the river towards Cambridge.

As we got closer to Karapiro we ran into a slight bit of drizzle, the first of the day. Once inside Five Stags enjoying refreshments it poured down. Once it cleared the Hamilton lot headed off and we fuelled up and headed back over the Kaimais, wth just a few spits coming down on the Bay of Plenty side but was a great ride.

A great days riding on some awesome roads.

Waikato/BOP Dinner in the Bay - 10th FebruaryThe BOP Dinner was held on the 10th of February at Astrolabe Bar/Cafe at the Mount. Another great turnout from the Bay with 20 attending. Was awesome to see Peter come all the way over from the Waikato – thanks Peter. We had 4 new members come along, Dave & Donnella and Tony & Tania, we look forward to seeing you all out on a ride soon. It was a nice evening so the bikes were out, we mixed & mingled and had a few coldies in the Garden Bar before heading in for our meal.We played Heads & Tails with Wendy Legg being the winner of the $40 Countdown Voucher.

Always good to see a good crowd attending. Look forward to the next one on the 11 May.

Until thenRide Safe & Have fun.

The meeting point was opposite the Mobil in Te Awamutu at 8.45am for a 9.00am departure and after a brief from Ash our Road Captain for the day, 15 bikes departed to the delight of the locals which included Colin Downie.First stop was Bosco’s Café in Te Kuiti for a coffee and some more chit chat then it was off to the first fuel stop in Taumarunui and then on to our lunch break at National Park.It looked quite impressive when we parked up outside The Station Café and it was inside to order lunch and remind them that we had a 10% discount thanks to Ash. The food there is pretty good and the main vote regarding food went to their home made pies (who ate all the pies then !!! )After the 2 minute warning it was off to Waiouru to gas up and get ready for the trip over the Gentle Annie. Pete & Sue Holt were there to meet us and then 17 bikes now headed south and hung a left a few K’s out of Taihape and we were on the Gentle Annie.154ks of magnificent scenery lots of very large sheep stations and a few interesting corners. Not to mention THE SPEED BUMP which had most of us up in the air & off our seats phew, didn’t see that coming. We stopped at a very old swing bridge for a photo opportunity and read up about the Springvale Suspension Bridge. This bridge spans the Rangitiki River and I guess if took a boat down the river you would end up in the Manawatu. Anyway this bridge was built in 1925 & was used until 1970 when the road was realigned. The bridge has a category 2 historic place and will

continue to be looked after by Heritage NZ.We rode into Napier around 5.00pm and booked into our home for a couple of days, BK’s Fountain Court Motel, and after a brief from Ash and Mark who was taking a ride to Southern Hawkes Bay Beaches the next day. See the nex page. After a shower and a few quiet cups of tea it was off to the RSA for dinner and again Ash had organized a voucher for everyone to get a free beer or wine. I have to say the meal was bloody good value for money and after a game of pool it was back to our digs.A few of us decided to hang about Napier the next day and not go on the ride so it was up town for breakfast at ‘Ujazi’ which was excellent MERCI.. and then it was checking out the shops. That evening it was your own choice for dinner so after a bit of socializing it was off to a Thai Hutt Restaurant on the Esplanade and again the food was excellent.Monday morning we awoke to a rainy day so it was wets on and get ready for an 8.30am departure over the Napier / Taupo highway to the Z in Taupo where we had ‘Brunch’ some at the Z and some at Mint.We said our goodbyes and I led a ride back to Hamilton and Mark took his crew back over the hill to the Bay.A big Thanks to Ash & Mark for a well organized Weekend which everyone on this trip enjoyed. The Aird’s – 5 of Clubs .

Having fuelled the Zeus @ Z Pukete and exited the forecourt at 9:32am, l knew the chances of not having to do a U turn on Te Rapa straight was pretty slim and sure enough before I reached R&S, here they were, heading towards me, the RC on her softail std, followed closely by the 500 street, with Brian and Ash in the back, providing their support for the days LoH run to Waiuku. The Zeus and I made a mad dash for it then slotted into the middle of the pack.First turnoff was at ngaruwaz (Ngaruawahia) where we followed Hakarimata Rd through to Huntly onto Te Ohaki Rd turning west at Glen Murray Rd which provided a fresh vista for me. The scenery was magnificent, the roads clear and the weather outstanding. There was a slight diversion from the main route and the RC was looking a little disoriented, next we were in a container packed full with motorcycle gear, OMG, a true LoH run, ladies we were $hopping! A purchase made, we continued our hikoi, towards Waiuku, albeit not without another RC brief rerun of disorientation, having found the correct road but was our destination left or right? Having earlier noticed the intercom unit on the side of her helmet, I realised there was likely some guidance from the cheap seats at the back, and sure enough despite what the indicator signalled we headed the other way! "Women's prerogative to change her mind!"Lunch was great! Conversation was prestigious! Company was esteemed! Ride home was without issue and still time to get that washing out and dried.Fantastic fun!XCSV Moana Mason

LoH Waiuku ride - 28th February 2016

Well we must be the luckiest couple in the chapter, Brian won the card draw AGAIN!!What a great night for a ride and what a great place to meet. We left a bit late due to work commitments and got to Okororie first, wondering when we arrived if we had the right night and right place. A quick check of the email confirmed that we were at the right place. The other 4 BOP riders did a scenic tour around Omanawa Road so arrived soon after us. The Waikato crew turned up led by Steve, 15 bikes turned in and parked up behind and beside our 6 BOP bikes, not many other bikes were in the parking lot. We had 21 bikes and 26 members.

We welcomed two new members, Leo and Milly Wakelin, who live in the Tirau district, riding a night rod with no back rest for Milly. You need to sort this Leo as Milly is keen to come on ALL our rides especially the over nighters!

This was the last ride that Steve would do as a Road Captain, thanks Steve from us all for your many adventures.

Hi to all our members,We have had a lot of great rides over the past few Summer months..There have been no incidents reported to our Road Captains and Tailend Charlies during these rides, which shows we are all riding and looking after each other during these rides.Steve Richardson, our Road Captain / Director, advised me on our last ride to Okoroire that he is standing down as a Road Captain as from now, so I wish him well. We will miss his help and input over the past few years.Colin Downie is also standing down as a Tailend Charlie, due to the sale of his pride and joy (H.D).I would like to thank all the remaining Tailend Charlies and Road Captains for their time and input, for attending and organising the rides as I know a lot of thought goes into these rides and how well they have been enjoyed buy all the members.I have attached the runs list below for your interest.

We had a great turn out for our first chapter gathering of 2016 held at John and Martina Burr's house. The weather was fine and warm for a BBQ and drinks in the evening sun. Twenty people turned up, a few people arrived by bike. It was great to catch up with everyone. Thanks to John and Martina for hosting us all. Paul and Mel Hooker.

Te Aroha - Wednesday 3rd February 2016

We headed off from Road and Sport half a dozen strong, our Tail-End-Charlie on a trike so nice to have along,

we headed out Wairere Drive then up to Gordon’s town, following Road Captain Paul on his longish cut and roaming all around,Whitikahu Tahuna Ohinewai roads we were weaving across the land,Haumia Horrell and Wisemans Roads all part of Paul’s Master plan,

Maungateparu Loop Road we turned into, one I had always wanted to drive, much better by bike than in a tin top, a few more corners and then we arrived,

half a dozen more from over the Bay were at the Te Aroha pub,to join us for great conversation, plus an ale and some grub,

the evening was mild the roads dry and clean,so why did I run wide? Don’t know what you mean, at least I got there with undies

still clean!A bit of brain fade, pillion face kinda pale – and this was before I had

gulped down my ale!never to mind it’s all part of the fun, thanks

to the team for a job very well done.
