7 May 2021 The Principal’s word “Hard work pays off” those were the words of wisdom from prefects in their messages of welcome to students on the first day of Term 2.

Welcome back to school from the prefects The ANZAC service held at the Waimate Events Centre was an impressive community occasion during the recent school holidays. It was great to see our young people choosing to participate in these events. Well done to our student leaders on the impressive way in which they carried out their roles. Head Prefects Hannah Soper and Emily Hargreaves carried out the readings during the service and our Prefect team were flag bearers. Waimate High School presented a wreath at the cenotaph.

Please note that there has been a change in Pastoral Manager for Years 9 and 10. Mr Mike Thomson has stepped down from this role. And we presently have Kellie Tagiaia as Pastoral Manager for Year 10 and David Shea for Year 9. A reminder that we have a Teacher Only Day on Thursday 13 May. Our teachers will be learning more about the upcoming NCEA changes and what these will mean for their subject areas and our students. No classes will be running on that day. On Thursday all families were emailed a letter in response to the recent unlawful and inappropriate postings on TikTok and Facebook. We want to give our school community the clear message that online bullying and harassment is not okay, and we encourage our students to do the right thing and keep themselves safe. When incidents do happen, we actively support our students and their families, and engage with the police and Netsafe for advice. However, what our young people are doing outside school time is out of our control and is beyond what can be asked of schools. Therefore, we need to ensure that we have robust partnerships between home and school so we are all working on this community issue together. If you or your children have concerns about a social media posting you should:

• Screenshot the offensive or inappropriate content

• Record the URL account link

• Report it to the social media platform

• Report it to Net Safe

• Inform us of the incident so we can provide appropriate support for students involved.

Ngā mihi nui Janette Packman

During the term break Margaret Nichol, Emma Freeman and Hannah Soper attended the 2021 South Island SADD Conference in Dunedin. SADD is a student-led nationwide organisation with the goal of empowering young Kiwis to prevent loss on our roads, together. The girls spent three days learning about the SADD principles and different ways to incorporate them into our school, through activities and presentations. They hope to use the skills and ideas they took away from the conference in our school throughout the next three terms

OCEANS Grief and Loss is a peer support programme for children, teens, and adults who have experienced loss in their life. The losses we work with usually come from the death of a significant person, or a personal experience of separation/divorce. The focus of this programme is providing a safe environment for participants to talk about their loss/es and the change/s that have occurred then look ahead to a preferred future living and coping with the loss/change. We meet once a week for eight weeks in the children's programme and six weeks for the teen and adult's programme. We have seen many people go through the programme and have numerous success stories of how it has helped (Over 500 since Oceans started in 2006). To enrol in a grief and loss programme please visit the website: https://www.anglicancare.org.nz Or, phone Matt on 0800 OCEANS or 027 4 OCEANS (ie. 623267) or Email [email protected] for more information SPORTS CORNER: Sports Results: Preseason Rugby (Friday 31st April) Roncalli/Aoraki Combined defeated Waitaki Boys’ High School 29-5

Careers Education Gateway We have had overwhelming interest in Gateway this year, with 28 students initially interested in being part of the Gateway programme in 2021. In term 1 students successfully completed Comprehensive Workplace First Aid and Health & Safety courses, in preparation for going out on work placement in term 2. Students are also now focussed on industry related self-directed study in their chosen industry sector, earning credits for their NCEA qualification. We have been very busy with work placement interviews and most of our students are ready to head out on work experience in the first week back. We wish our students all the best in the coming weeks as they venture out into the workforce. In the coming weeks, we will be profiling students on their work experience journeys. Here’s a snapshot of career industry sectors Waimate High School Gateway students are involved in, in 2021:

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? TARA GREENHALGH

What years did you attend Waimate High School? I attended Waimate High School from 1993 to 1999. What were your favourite subjects at Waimate High School? I really loved maths and accounting. What other things were you involved in at Waimate High School? I loved visiting the library and Mrs Bailey. I loved reading and still do. I remember playing rugby for the Waimate High School girls rugby team and travelling to Dunedin for a sports exchange with a Dunedin high school. I was also involved in swimming. I also remember being involved in Young Enterprise, we made a recipe book, which I still have. What have you been doing since you left Waimate High School? I attended Otago University for three and a half years. I studied accounting and every commerce subject you can think of. Even though I had always wanted to be an accountant, once I attended university, I decided that accounting was no longer a career option for me. After leaving university, I applied for a job as Office Manager at Parker Warburton Architects, Dunedin. In this role, the variety was interesting and stimulating. Soon I was helping put together proposals for million-dollar projects. I had found my niche, I loved it, especially the pressure of working to deadlines. In 2008, I moved to Australia and secured a job in Brisbane for a water utility company called Trility. Trility is an Australian and New Zealand company committed to being a ‘partner of choice’ in the delivery of water, wastewater, and environmental services. I started out as a receptionist and moved through the ranks to the position I currently hold which is Proposals Manager. I am responsible for the planning, coordination, and preparation of all tenders and proposals submitted by the company, ranging from small $50,000 projects to multi-million and billion-

Page 7: WAIMATE HIGH SCHOOL 2021

dollar projects. When we win a tender, we design, build, operate and maintain water and sewage treatment plants for anywhere from ten to 35 years. The things that initially attracted me to the job included the opportunity to travel around Australia, learning about water and waste treatment operations, and the opportunities for promotion due to it being a smaller company. I love the challenge of bringing large projects together through working collaboratively with a team. In 2019, I approached my firm about moving home to New Zealand and working remotely from here. This proposal was accepted, and I transferred to the New Zealand division. I moved home at the end of January 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic. I currently work from home in Waimate, managing a four-hour time difference in order to be able to work collaboratively with a global team. WHS Cross Country (Bus Students) The cross country next Friday 14th May, involves the use of chalk dyes for the fun run. All bus students must be washed down, have changed their clothes and be clean to be able to use the bus on Friday afternoon.
