Susan emerges from cold night in the bush

By Aaron Meredith

A mother’s fi rst thought after emerging safely from the bush was to feed her eight month old daughter.

Susan O’Brien went missing during an XTERRA race in the Rimutaka Forest Park, failing to return to the Car Park at the 11.30am cut off time on Sunday.

Susan was missing for exactly 24 hours after the time she was due back, before she was seen waving frantically by a Westpac Rescue Helicopter Team.

Continued from page 1The Helicopter had just fi nished drop-

ping off a Land Search Party, and had been hunting for about four hours before seeing Susan.

She survived the cold n ight by cover ing herself with dirt and even drank some of her own breast milk, which she thought would keep her going.

Race organisers say that she was well prepared to spend the night in the bush, with a good jacket with a hood, and plenty of fl uids.

After it was found that Susan was miss-ing Runners ran the track twice to see if she was still on the track.

Police also confirmed that she was seen at a Hutt well off the track around lunchtime on Sunday.

Nick Engleback, from Land Search and Rescue, said race organisers did a "really good job" of searching till the offi cial search parties arrived.

A team of 31 people

plus three search dogs were out on Sunday with a similar number searching on Monday. Fires were lit on Sunday

night to act as beacons. The runner's family issued a statement

on Monday afternoon, thanking the police, search and rescue teams and

race organisers for "their tireless and unwavering efforts to fi nd Susan"."As a family we are

extremely relieved and thankful that Susan has

been found safe and well."Susan will be having some

much-needed rest over the next couple of days."

Wainuiomata Village residents are about to lose their post box in their area, but a lo-cal business Director is fi ghting to keep it.

Brenda Ryan from BJR accounting wants to keep the only post box in Wai-nuiomata South and has contacted New Zealand Post about this.

She found a notice on the post box one

day so checked the NZ Post website to see why this was happening.

It says that anyone who has a concern about this should contact the service centre.

“It looks like they are inviting people to protest via their website,” she says.

“I use this post box every day as this is the address of my business, I can as-sure you this post box is used a lot and regularly by myself and all the residents of Wainuiomata South.”

NZ Post says they only remove post boxes if they are not being used often, but Brenda says that last time she tried to fi t some mail in their it barely fi t.

“I have to jiggle it around to make sure it falls right inside because it is so full,” she says

“I also quite often fi nd undelivered mail on the footpath outside my offi ce, because the envelope hasn't stayed in the postbox due to it being so full.”

If anyone in the Wainuiomata South area has a concern about the removal of the post box, please contact the NZ Post Customer Service Centre on 0800501501.

The Wainuiomata Marae was fi lled with love and respect as hundreds farewelled Henrietta Maxwell.

“Whaea Henrietta was entrepreneurial in many spheres,” said Mãori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell.

“She was a fearless advocate of Te Ataarangi, a method of teaching te reo Mãori with the use of cuisenaire rods, Thousands of New Zealanders, over the last three decades have grown to love those rods as a simple tool for learning language structures.”

Henrietta was a strong advocate of both Te Reo and Kohanga Reo, she taught at a local Kohanga Reo for many years.

Labour’s Maori caucus chair, Peeni Henare, says her dedication and com-mitment to the Maori language was unwavering and her legacy will not be forgotten.

He offered condolences to her eight surviving children.

Henrietta Maxwell from Ngati Porou was one of the key fi gures behind the establishment the fi rst kohanga reo at Wainuiomata.

Henrietta was thought to be in her 70’s, and was well known in both the Maori and wider com-munity in Wainui-omata and Lower Hutt.

Many around Wai-nuiomata had stories of what she had done in Wainuiomata, and all were deeply saddened by her passing.

Henrietta is survived by her chil-dren, Hapi, Peter, Kimiora, Juan, Mina, Elizabeth, April-Dawn, Puke, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Whai Oranga has another new doctor within its walls, this time coming from America.

Melissa Amertil has just started at the surgery, and is excited about working at the Wainuio-mata doctors.

Melissa was born in Michigan and grew up on Massachusetts, and studied in Wisconsin.

She came to New Zealand two and a half years ago, and has fallen in love with the country.

“People are very friendly and very inquisitive,” she says.

“They do watch too much American television however.”

Melissa jokes saying that we sometimes think that life in the USA is exactly like we see on TV, but it is not.

“I lived there for over thirty years, I know it’s nothing like that,” she laughs.

Outside of work, she says that

her and food “get along really well,” and that she is wanting to try and get into the theatre while she is over here.

Mel issa l ived in the Hawkes Bay when she fi rst moved over to New Zealand, before moving down to Wellington.

She is now planning to stay in New Zealand and get her permanent residency.

She took up the job at Whai Oranga, and now is aiming to provide the best care for her patients possible.

“I am here to repre-sent their needs, and to work in partnership with them to provide the care,” she says.

“They give 50 per-cent, I give 50 percent, and we will make a beautiful 100 percent.”

Some people have hearing problems and just do not know how to cope with it, and now people in Wainuiomata will be able to get the help they need.

Susan Lennie a Hearing Therapist from Life Un-limited is setting up clinics that will be run at the Wai-nuiomata Community Centre once a month.

These start next month, and Susan is keen to help anyone who needs it.

“We basically help people to fi nd out if they have a hear-ing problem, and then help them manage that problem,” she says.

“We do not supply or fit Hearing Aids, we help people learn about them or can point people in the right direction so they can get them.”

Some of the solutions they fi nd to helping people with problems with hearing are working with the families, and around people’s homes.

“It could be as easy as re-ducing background noise so

that they can hear clearer and it also can be people speaking clearer around the dinner table,” says Susan.

Other problems with hear-ing can also be dealt with, and every case is dealt with on an individual basis.

“There are tools that can be applied for everyone, but to get it right every case needs to be dealt with differently,” Susan says.

If people are interested in these clinics, they can make an appointment through the Wellington offi ce, and they

will organise the appoint-ment.People can call the free phone line on 0800 008 011 to make an appointment.

Wainuiomata resident Luke Tahuran-gi has won the 2014 CRA Apprentice of the Year, Golden Gun award.

The award was presented by MITO Chairman David O’Kane, at the Col-lision Repair Association’s Annual Awards ceremony in Paihia on Friday night. The award recognises the ap-prentice who is at the top of their fi eld in vehicle refi nishing.

Luke attributes his win to being promoted to a senior refi nisher role at an early stage in his career. “I had to master the techniques and learn about the paints fairly quickly. That fast-paced learning has helped boost my skills and career,” said Luke.

In addition to this prestigious award,

Luke has recently won the gold medal in Car Painting at the WorldSkills Oceania competition, held in Ham-ilton last month, having also won the qualifying rounds prior.

Luke has achieved a National Certifi -cate in Refi nishing (Level 4) through MITO and completed I-Car courses to keep up-to-date with new techniques and paints. MITO Chief Executive Janet Lane who was also at the ceremony, is impressed with Luke. “Luke stands out as a very skilled and competent automotive refi nisher, and is a fabulous role model for anyone thinking about a career in this indus-try. This is a very prestigious award within the industry and it refl ects the

high level of skill and strong work ethic Luke has,” said Janet.

Aside from the study, 22 year old Luke credits his workmates and supervisors with helping him develop and advance his skills. “I’ve learned a lot from the other technicians in the workshop and have been mentored by the company owners,” said Luke.

Luke’s passion for the industry began when his father bought him his fi rst car to work on. He then got a holiday job at Larsen’s Panel and Paint in Wainuiomata. Luke was soon hooked on the industry and left school at the age of 16 to work full-time at Larsen’s and start a MITO apprenticeship in refi nishing.

Dear Ed, I think some of the Television ads are quite good.

There is one with a lovely sheep getting good directions from its Ram Dad and skip-ping along like those little animals do.

The wool and wool store-men and some women shear-ers are so cozy and warm in

their winter garments.I am so proud of the goods

produced by our country as well as the work it gives to our country people.

In my opinion I think and feel well done New Zealand and those kind of ads are not offensive for children and the, old or any age to watch

Mrs E.R Marchant

Dear Ed, I agree with Mayor Wal-lace things are being done by stealth and we not should rest on your laurels.

Ray is right proposing a system that you want will only have some egg on your rather than lot of egg on your face.

Local Government New Zealand is calling for law changes on reorganisa-tion proposal.

The Local Government Commis-

sion is statutory body and the law changes are that LGNZ are calling for are wishes of majority of effected voters of each council each council be done by the majority of voters.

LGNZ calls for all current amalga-mation to be proposal to be postponed the LGNZ remit LGNZ want is the Local Government Commission is be subject to the Offi cial information act.

Open Government should be impor-

tant part of local democracy and the way the Greater Wellington Regional Council and Porirua Council tried to fast track the draft Reorganisation proposal through the Independent review there is need for changes to make local democracy work.

One the issue that need to be de-bated will this create more inequities for residential ratepayers.

The Wainuiomata Pioneer Churches Anzac Concert was a success, and every attendee enjoyed the show.

The church was almost filled as the Wellington Kiwi Concert Party preformed songs from the era of World War One.

“With the enthusiastic support of the audience the roof of the Old Church was in danger,” says Joyce Lockyer from the Pioneer Church.

The evening started off with the playing of the last post followed by a minute of silence and the New Zealand National Anthem.

“The President of the Church Com-

mittee reading out the names and a brief history of the Men of Wainuio-mata who fought in World War One,” says Joyce.

“Members of the audience were then invited to speak of their ancestors who also fought in this War.”

The concert then commenced and the evening was ended with a light supper.

“It was a most enjoyable and memo-rable evening,” says Joyce.

The concert was moved to the night before Anzac Day as to not clash with any other events that were happening in the valley at the time.

This year’s Anzac Day services had the highest rate of attendees ever, with records breaking all over the country.

Children in Wainuiomata once again had the chance to enter a coloring competition run by Professionals Real Estate agent Ben McLennan.

The competition was run over the last

holiday period and around 2000 pictures were entered in the competition.

The entries are being displayed on the windows of the old sport shop in the mall.

The winners this year were Charlotte Claridge, Annabelle Wildbore and Max McCormack.

Coastguard volunteers bring over 7330 people home safely each year.

Steve, Terry and Colin were three of those people after a boating accident left them lost at sea in the Firth of Thames for nine hours in January this year.

The three men were left submerged in the churning sea, clinging to their slippery, upturned aluminum hull in complete shock and disbelief.

They were fl ipped out so quickly they didn’t even realise what had happened and found themselves struggling for their lives in churning seas surrounded by scattered debris from their boat.

“We’d been lost at sea for about eight hours, we were in total darkness, our bodies were freezing and numb,” he says

“We saw vehicle headlights in the distance across the water, it was a car travelling on the coast road.”

“We wondered if those people in that car had any idea of the peril we were in… all sorts of things were going through our minds.”

“For the fi rst two hours we tried to keep each other’s spirits up. Then the next few hours fell silent as we were engulfed in our own thoughts, terrifi ed of what our fate might be.” said Terry.

“We wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them, No one ever expects it to happen to them. We are lucky to be alive and we have been eternally thankful every single day since the accident.” says Terry.

This is just one of the 2,800 rescues that 2,326 Coastguard volunteers carry

out each year, and May sees the begin-ning of Coastguard’s annual MayDay appeal, calling for donations to help volunteers continue to save lives at sea such as Steve, Terry and Colin’s.

MayDay is an important component of our fundraising stream and we rely on public donations so we can continue saving lives at sea.

We’re urging the public to support the vital service we provide by donating at coastguard.co.nz.” says Patrick Hol-mes, CEO, Coastguard New Zealand.

“It’s vital to our organisation to raise awareness of the work we do.

This year we’re extremely grateful to have Sir Graham Henry on board again as our offi cial ambassador.

He’s a keen boatie himself and a great advocate for safer boating.

You’ll be seeing Graham around the traps, spreading our message and encouraging the public of New Zealand to get behind Coastguard this MayDay.” he continued.

“Coastguard is a charity made up of great volunteers, they’re generous kiwis that have day jobs just like you and I giving up their time to save lives at sea.”

“Coastguard is a great organisation doing great things to keep kiwis safe on the water. I really hope New Zealanders get behind this great cause and make a donation this MayDay.” said Graham Henry.

Coastguard’s annual MayDay appeal kicks off on May 1st and runs through to May 31st. Coastguard units around the country will be out in force raising awareness and collecting donations for Coastguard.

When people think of Basketball, they tend to not think it is as global as it is, it is played in America and that’s pretty much it, well you couldn’t be more wrong.

Basketball is played in nearly as many coun-tries as Football, with countries all around the world competing in various leagues.

The FIBA world championships have 24 teams from every continent competing against each other.

NBA teams have players from all corners of the earth playing for them, it’s not all about LeBron and Kobe and Kevin Durant.

In New Zealand we all know about Steven Adams, he is our NBA player, but there are players from some countries you would never think of.

In the Miami Heat, you have the Dragic brothers, who come from Slovenia.

Marcin Gortad from the Washington Wizards comes from Poland, and the Spurs Tony Parker is French.

You had Yao Ming from China, and there are currently multiple players from Australia playing as well.

FIBA has 215 member countries from all around the world that means that if you can think of a country they most likely play Basketball.

Yes that even means some of our Pa-cifi c Neighbours play the sport like Tuvalu, Kiribati and even Norfold Island have inter-national Basketball teams.

Even the tiniest European countries have teams, Andorra, Malta and San Marino.

Fifa only has 209 countries that are mem-bers, World Rugby has 100, the ICC has only 10 full members and 106 associate members.

So before you think only Americans play basketball, remember that more people play Basketball than most other sports in the world, Its massive!

Basketball, a much bigger sport than we think

The Ulalei Netball club unfor-tunately had two tough losses this weekend, with both sides going down by inly single fi gues.

The Premier One squad went down 61-57 to Petone Rugby League, the teams went goal for goal for much of the match.

The turning point however was the loss of goal keeper Shaitana Laba-Filihiahekava to an Achilles injury.

After the loss the girls currently sit in third on the table.

The Premier Two side also had a tough loss going down 28-22 to Maidstone United, with the teams also going goal for goal for much of the match.

Some great long range shooting by Stephanie Hoare kept Ulalei in the game right up unitl the fi nal quarter when Maidstone United pulled away.

The Hutt Valley Secondary Schools Netball got underway this weekend and the Wainuiomata High School Junior A team started strongly.

The destroyed Chilton St James by 30-9, and were far too strong in all aspects of play.

The Coach Lahraine Sagaga was pleased with the start of the season.

“The girls played well as a team,

it was great to see some of the combinations working well already,” She says

“It is a great way to kick of the season.”

In other High School netball results Wainuiomata One beat St Orans Three 31-24.

Wainuiomata Three defeated Sa-cred Heart 17 by 26-11, Wainuio-mata Four had the bye, Wainuiomata Five defeated St Orans 12 by 20-10.

Wainuiomata six defeated Sacred Heart 21 by 20-1, fi nishing up a great weekend for the High School.

Next Week Ulalei Premier One is playing Naenae at 11am, Pre-mier Two is playing Maidstone at 12.30pm, both at Walter Nash Stadium.

In the secondary Schools grade, Wainuiomata One is playing Hutt Valley High School two at Taita College at 10am, Wainuiomata Two is playing St Orans eight at 9am.

Wainuiomata Three plays Chilton fi ve at Sacred Heart at 10am, Wai-nuiomata Four plays Sacred Heart 18 also at 10am at Sacred Heart.

Wainuiomata fi ve is also at Sacred Heart against Sacred Heart playing at 11am, and Wainuiomata six fi nish the action at Sacred Heart against Chilton Six at 1pm.

Saturday May 9 was our fi nal cross-country relay for the season, in the form of the Varsity relays.

These races were held at QEII Park, McKays Crossing, Paekakariki, in slightly windy conditions, making the already tough course even harder.

Wainuiomata Har r iers' performed well and several personal bests were run even though the course ended up being about 400 meters longer than last year.

Even with several athletes out of the running due to injury and illness, Wainuiomata Har-

riers fi elded three teams with a Masters Men 50+, Senior Women, and composite teams.

All teams ran extremely well and the competition between the senior women and compos-ite teams was extremely close, with the composite narrowly holding off the senior team by less than a minute.

The stand-out performance of the day came from junior runner Ashden Brew who fi n-ished 4th boy, and 5th overall in the 9 and under race.

The grueling 3.5km (al-though actually measured at 3.9km) course fi lled with lots

of hills, mud and even sand-dunes to negotiate, ensured everyone had a great deal of fun!

We also had Robbie Hannan, Karen McNatty and Brendan McCauley compete in the chocolate walk race.

The results for the day in-cluded the Masters men fi nish-ing in an overall eighth place.

The Composite team was in third place and the senior women were in ninth place.

The Juniors also competed in Individual races, with all the juniors performing well at the meet.
