::Life In Rhodesia.:Missionary's Theme

Rev. Gene D. Phillips, aSouthern Baptist missionary to'Rhodesia, will relate some ofhis experiences at the 11 a.m.and 7:30 p.m. services Sunday.at Oakland Baptist Church.

Rev. and Mrs. Phillips wereappointed to their mission inApril 1956, but in 1962 whenthousands of Africans had go!).&.to the booming Triangle Sugar'Estates in southeastern'Rhodesia where jobs wereabundant, they were stationed'in Shabani, 140miles away, and'began holding services there as"time permitted.

When they returned toRhodesia in 1965 following)urlough in the States, theyrelocated at Triangle to begin amore permanent witness in thearea. AyoungAfrican Christianasked why they were settlingthere. "You will only wasteyour time here," he predicted."You cannot change thesepeople. They love their sin.They are not interested inknowing any other way"The Phillipses agreed that

they could not change anyone,but assured him that theyserved a God who could. Threeyears later the same youngman, by then a Sunday Schoolteacher and a faithful worker inthe Baptist Church, reportedthat he had seen God doing the"impossible" in Triangle andsurrounding areas.During an evangelistic

crusade in 1970, 250 decisionsfor Christ were recorded in the'Triangle area, many of them byyoung men working on thesugar estate., Phillips does evangelisticwork throughout the Trianglearea and beyond, concentratingparticularly 'on the work' ofRunyararo Baptist Church inTriangle, and its 10 scatteredpreaching points. The church,organized in 1966,now has anAfrican pastor.In January 1973 a Baptist

church was organized inChiredzi, 17 miles fromTriangle. The Congregationwas begun by a layman whomoved there from Triangleseveral years ago, Phillipssays.Phillips admits that there are

obstacles to the spread ofChristianity in the area.."African witchcraft and wit-chdoctors are not just super-stition. They are very real andare of the devil," he said."Demon possession is a realityin this country."Mrs. Phillips works with
