ldquoItrsquos certainly a concern Itrsquos the best race hersquos run since he broke his maidenrdquo Hennig said ldquoThe only encouraging part of coming back on short rest is he has definitely moved up mentally since winning a race Hersquos shown no signs of letting off hersquos trained more aggressively since the race than prior to the race The rider that gets on him every day says his arms are six inches longer than they were before the race He says he gets better every dayrdquo

Steve Asmussen entered Student Council the only other Grade I winner in the field The 6-year-old has banked nearly $14 million while competing from coast to coast He won the Pimlico Special over a muddy surface and would probably benefit from more rain

No itrsquos not October yet though you might think so when you check the entries for Saturdayrsquos Grade I Diana Stakes The 1 18-mile turf stakes sure looks like the Breedersrsquo Cup Filly and Mare Turf which will be run Oct 24 at Santa Anita

In fact the winner of the Diana a Breedersrsquo Cup Challenge race automatically earns a starting berth in California

Mother Nature however could take some of the zing out of the $500000 Diana Though the forecast looks promising for Friday night and Saturday the torrential rain that lashed Saratoga Springs Wednes-day and Thursday might have already taken its toll on the course

Grade I winners Bit Of Whimsy Rutherienne Va-care and Wait A While are entered in the Diana but with the exception of Bit Of Whimsy (whose connec-tions said she will handle soft going) the other three standouts are questionable if the course is too water-logged

Christophe Clement the trainer of Rutherienne and Vacare and Todd Pletcher the trainer of Wait A While were anxious to watch Fridayrsquos Lake George the first turf race of the meet

The good news is that Fridayrsquos skies sported nary a cloud and Saturdayrsquos forecast held only a 30-per-cent chance of an isolated thunderstorm Then again itrsquos Saratoga and typhoon-like events arrive without warning

ldquoFor some reason early in her 3-year-old year she got stubborn about going into the gaterdquo Pletcher said ldquoWe did a lot of work with her and found that the easy compromise was just to blindfold her It has worked well and we have never changed itrdquo

ston Spa Vacare has started just once this year finishing eighth (though just 4 lengths behind the winner) in the Just A Game at Belmont Park June 7 Clement entered Vacare in an overnight stakes earlier this month at Belmont but scratched when the turf came up yielding

ldquoShe ran in the Just A Game so there will be no excuserdquo Clement said ldquoIt is what it is She had her racerdquo

Shug McGaughey Criminologistrsquos trainer said he doesnrsquot mind if the turf is boggy as long as it is safe

Criminologist won the Grade III Athenia over a yielding course last year at Belmont and took an allowance here last year over a course labeled good She is 2-for-2 on Saratogarsquos turf

Criminologist finished seventh in the 1-mile Just A Game and McGaughey thinks the Dianarsquos extra furlong will help

ldquoThe mile and an eighth is probably her shtick a little more than the milerdquo McGaughey said ldquoShe got in a little bit of traffic in the Just A Game Irsquom not using that as an excuse It was around the half-mile pole and then she kind of dropped it on (jockey John Velazquez)

Zabeel booked Thorrsquos Echo a return flight in April 2007 and after 14 months off he resurfaced in the Grade II True North on the Belmont Stakes under-card Racing up close to a quick pace he tired late to finish fourth beaten only 1 34 lengths by divisional leader Benny The Bull Thorrsquos Echo drew the rail in the Vanderbilt and reunites with Corey Nakatani who was aboard for the late-season stakes scores in 2006

Pena sees little change in the horse that seems to be sitting on a peak performance

When yoursquore a 22-year-old appren-tice who had never ridden a winner be-fore New Yearrsquos Day itrsquos pretty easy to see the blue skies through the storm

Morales crossed another career mile-stone off his list Friday when he guided Clemens home in the opener giving the Mexican jockey his first career score at Saratoga

Morales came to the United States at 18 settling in Kentucky before learning his trade as an exercise rider in Califor-nia New Jersey and Florida He took out his jockeyrsquos license earlier this year in Florida and rode his first winner Jan 31 at Tampa Bay Downs

The apprentice moved his tack to Belmont for the springsummer meet Big Sandyrsquos jockey colony makes the New York skyline look like a two-sto-ry apartment complex but instead of

struggling on the bottom floor Morales excelled riding 23 winners and finish-ing 10th in the standings

On to Saratoga where Morales has picked up right where he left off

Killing time on Travers Day 2004 I went to the paddock for the third race and watched 12 maiden 2-year-olds walk around as 50000-plus people basked in Saratogarsquos biggest day

Hours later Birdstone would blend brilliance with darkness thunder rain and lightning to win the Travers But itrsquos the 2-year-olds I remember Or one anyway The field included future stars Silver Train (the winner at $2040 un-der Jerry Bailey) and Sun King plus Malheur Survivalist and Interpatation on the also-eligible list

Some regal some dignified some wild most a little flighty because of the typical Travers Day commotion the horses took it all in and got ready to run One stopped me faster than a George Foreman punch The big long-legged bay with a little white on his nose strolled easily around the paddock and looked somewhat out of place Despite billion-dollar bloodlines (Kingmambo-Class Kris Kris S) and connections (Will Farish and Neil Howard) the colt didnrsquot fit He was big and raw lean like he needed to grow up If he lasted hersquod be a star someday I came back to the office that Travers Day and told every-one about ldquothe prettiest horse in the worldrdquo I declared emphatically ldquoRe-member this name Student Councilrdquo

I just didnrsquot think someday was so far away He lost that 6 12-furlong test by 23 lengths (checking in 12th at 52-1) but gained a fan for life He didnrsquot break his maiden until five starts (and nearly two years) later and bounced through allowance races turf synthetic some mid-level stakes Useful would describe him but thatrsquos probably about it Two summers ago at Saratoga Sean and I even asked Howard about making the horse a steeplechaser Every time it looked like a possibility he would run a little better

You know the rest of the story Last summer Farish and Howard

sold the horse to Millennium Farm and Student Council rewarded his new con-nections with a Grade I score in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar He backed that up by winning the Grade II Haw-thorne Gold Cup This year he added the Grade I Pimlico Special and is the 6-1 fourth choice in todayrsquos Grade I Whitney Trainer Steve Asmussen may pass (hersquos not enamored with post posi-tion 9) and opt instead for a second try at the Pacific Classic Aug 24 but the horse has still made the big time

Thoroughbreds are amazing and given a chance they will show you In this era of retired 3-year-olds he keeps going at 6 ndash a testament to durability patience breeding timing a little luck

Asmussen considers the circumstanc-es the good fortune for all concerned ndash and shakes his head

ldquoHersquos amazing an amazing physi-cal (specimen)rdquo Asmussen said Friday morning ldquoHe trains like absolutely like a train Exactly He looks tremen-dous standing still and when hersquos mov-ing Hersquos proven hersquos good enough and thatrsquos all anybody wants for a horse

You feel fabulous about it and fabulous for him Hersquos a multiple Grade I winner on synthetic and dirt now Thatrsquos pretty impressiverdquo

Asmussen gave ample credit to the horsersquos prior home for providing the foundation for the recent success Far-ish and Howard didnrsquot crank on a late-maturing 2-year-old beyond a few starts Student Council started just once between October 2004 and May 2006 but has run 24 times since

Last yearrsquos Pacific Classic victory came a matter of days after the pur-chase by Millenniumrsquos owner Ro Parra on the advice of bloodstock consultant Jerry Brown at Thoro-Graph

ldquoNeil does an unbelievable job of be-ing patient and letting those horses de-veloprdquo Asmussen said ldquoStudent Coun-cil is just another example of how well the Farish and Neil Howard deal works When we got him I asked Neil what to do with him and we entered him Thatrsquos what we did No lie Timing-wise for the horse Ro is somebody who is inter-ested in running horses of this caliber and they made a great choice buying him because of the health the horse was in and how fresh he was at his age For Neil not to exploit that horse to be that patient with him ndash thatrsquos what got him hererdquo

Still bay still regal still sporting that white snip Student Council looks a lit-tle older than he did almost four years ago (donrsquot we all) and probably feels the grind of five seasons of racing ndash but hersquos still the ldquoprettiest horse in the worldrdquo to me I still get e-mail updates about entries workouts results Irsquom not sure Irsquove ever cashed a bet on him but thatrsquos not the point Hersquos simply one I follow

ldquoYoursquore standing here because of the sense of pride you had in picking up on it ndash even back themrdquo Asmussen said af-ter I relayed my story ldquoI love it when that happens Moments like that are special You would have never thought it would happen now though would you Irsquoll bet he was some 2-year-old though rdquo

ldquoOKrdquo Fahey saidHere goesTwo days after Chad Brown 29

won his first Saratoga race with his first Saratoga starter Fahey 30 duplicated the effort when Fort Apache Star upset a starter allowance Friday Consider Fa-hey content with his decision to bring four horses to Saratoga A decision made July 5

That was the day the condition book came out on NYRArsquos web site Fahey searched the conditions Itrsquos not like Pletcher or Asmussen looking at a condi-tion book It either works or it doesnrsquot work Fahey has 11 horses in his care It didnrsquot take long to download the stall application

ldquoI saw spots where my horses fit like this horse hererdquo Fahey said ldquoI was sur-prised just because itrsquos lsquoSaratogarsquo You used to need good allowance horses good babies and stakes horses to belong hererdquo

Fahey circled the sixth race in the book (carded as Fridayrsquos seventh) for Fort Apache Star a 4-year-old he claimed for $10000 in March at Fair Grounds Fort Apache Star had lost his last three races before that day all by double digit margins Fahey took the blinkers off and shortened him up The chestnut gelding responded immediately finishing third at Keeneland in a $30000 conditioned claimer second at Churchill against the same company then stepping up and winning for a $50000 tag Spartan Sta-blesrsquo gelding finished fourth on the turf at the end of June setting him up for his Saratoga debut

Fahey liked that spot and then picked out a few other races that fit other horses Fahey decided he belonged at Saratoga

Then he talked to his wife Jennie and told her he was leaving for six weeks Leaving his 3-year-old son and his 1 12-year-old daughter Then he called his owners to tell them he wanted to go to Saratoga

Jennie Fahey was cool with it Faheyrsquos owners went along with it but were hesitant

ldquoAre you surerdquo many of them asked

ldquoI was sure but I wasnrsquot very surerdquo Fahey said ldquoIt was a big step To leave the family Irsquom sorry It just hits yourdquo

Thatrsquos what happens when you win your first race at Saratoga Everything hits you

Eighteen years on the backstretch Eighteen years of dreaming

Fahey followed his dad onto the Churchill Downs backstretch walking hots for Glenn Wismer His dad taught school and spent summer vacations walking hots and working the mutuels at Churchill The younger Fahey went to Eastern Kentucky University just like his dad but the racetrack was always more

addictive than schoolwork He worked off and on as ldquohotwalker groom and half-ass foremanrdquo for Wayne Lukas and then worked as the assistant to the assis-tant in the Steve Asmussen juggernaut

ldquoIt jumps in your blood and stays there There isnrsquot many things Irsquod like to do other than this or could dordquo Fahey said ldquoSo far wersquove had some success We havenrsquot had any big time owners or big time horses I had a horse in the Claim-ing Crown last year and Irsquoll have one in it this year For a guy like me whorsquos got 10 horses trying to pay the bills and feed the family those type of horses mean a lotrdquo

Leave it to Fahey to win his first race at Saratoga with a horse he claimed for $10000 in March Fahey walks a differ-ent walk He doesnrsquot fit the mold of Todd Pletcher Kiaran McLaughlin Mark Hennig Dallas Stewart no he calls himself a half-ass foreman Hersquos no half-ass trainer

ldquoI donrsquot have 40 or 50 horses that I can keep plugging at them and picking spots Irsquom proud of what wersquove donerdquo Fahey said ldquoIrsquove got good owners sup-porting me and itrsquos nice to repay them with thisrdquo

Faheyrsquos son George starts pre-school in the fall His daughter Lizzie is 1 12 The emotions started to come again as Fahey stood outside Clarkrsquos Cottage where his small string of Saratoga horses bed down for the season

ldquoMy wifersquos a saint shersquos supported me every step of the wayrdquo Fahey said ldquoI go to New Orleans but we plan on that and we can deal with it Coming up here came on so quick July 5 and we were shipping two weeks later itrsquos a lot Itrsquos pretty cool to win one That helps It jumps on top of you and puts you in a headlock something like thisrdquo
