IF THE LAB ISYOUR SANDBOXand the sky is your limit, you belong at Wake
Downtown. You’ll be immersed in an active, roll-
up-your-sleeves learning environment when you
participate in our engineering and biomedical
sciences programs. Experiential learning
normally reserved for graduate-level study is the
cornerstone of these undergraduate opportunities.
Newly approved offerings in engineering,
biochemistry and molecular biology, and medicinal
chemistry and drug discovery are now available.
Innovation starts with the right environment, so
we’ve created a new home for these programs
in the heart of downtown Winston- Salem. We
set up shop right next to the new Wake Forest
School of Medicine facilities at the Bowman Gray
Center for Medical Education — not only to give
our undergraduates proximity to those labs and
research spaces, but also to increase collaboration
with School of Medicine faculty in coursework and
research. Wake Downtown also houses courses in
the arts and humanities alongside our new anchor
programs in the sciences, bringing in students
and professors from all disciplines to benefit from
the building’s innovative teaching spaces and
urban setting.
RENOVATING SPACE. INNOVATING SCIENCE. Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, the physical home of Wake Downtown, offers students a
thriving community of established businesses, entrepreneurial startups, retail space and
institutions of higher learning. This dynamic reincarnation of former tobacco-processing
buildings includes the new main campus of the Wake Forest School of Medicine and
covers nearly 200 acres, including 55 acres of green space that includes Bailey Park. WAKE D

INNOVATIVE AND HANDS-ON.. . JUST LIKE A GOOD ENGINEER
B.S. IN ENGINEERING
This Bachelor of Science program offers comprehensive
and fully immersed technical training with a firm academic
grounding in liberal arts. With Wake Forest’s unsurpassed
student-faculty engagement and real-world learning
opportunities, the curriculum extends beyond that of a typical
undergraduate engineering program. Already, students are
taking advantage of unique opportunities and projects, making
connections between their undergraduate coursework,
innovative entrepreneurship and Wake Forest’s distinct
interdisciplinary environment.

LIFE UNDER THE LENS
B.S. IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
Explore the chemical principles that define life with this
interdisciplinary degree offering from the departments
of chemistry and biology. Understanding growth,
development and genetics begins with the study of living
organisms at the biochemical, molecular and cellular
levels. Faculty and students use a highly engaged,
hands-on approach to learning to develop practical skills
for addressing today’s complex biochemical, molecular
biological and biomedical challenges. Emphasizing
research that employs analytical and quantitative
methods along with high-resolution imaging, this major
provides a strong foundation in chemistry and biology.
Undergraduates partner with faculty mentors for at least
two semesters and/or summers of research, culminating
in a senior research project.

CONCENTRATION IN MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY AND DRUG DISCOVERY
Discovery is for people who love a challenge as much
as they love learning. Leveraging the strength of the
chemistry department’s research program, Wake Forest
now offers a concentration in medicinal chemistry and
drug discovery, providing a new avenue to earning
an American Chemical Society certified B.S. degree.
With the goal of identifying new therapeutic agents,
faculty engage students in an in-depth study of the
connections between chemical structure and biological
function. This concentration is ideal for students
interested in health-related fields, biomedical sciences
and pharmacology.

EXPLORE THE WORLDOUTSIDE YOUR LABThere is life outside the lab, and we’ve made having fun very
convenient. When your brain reaches capacity, we suggest
you fill up your senses. Cool your heels at Bailey Park, see
and be seen at a local art gallery or treat your mouth at one
of dozens of unique downtown eateries. You can cheer on
the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark, soak up the
sun at Salem Lake or take in the smells at Camino Bakery.
Experiment with your surroundings. You know how.

DRAWN TOGETHER
START.dt
START.dt is a collaborative enterprise between START, the Wake Forest student
gallery in Reynolda Village, and Wake Downtown. This initiative periodically presents
work created by Wake Forest students in available spaces at Wake Downtown,
fostering cross-disciplinary interactions where creative and investigatory impulses
overlap. Already, START.dt has hosted numerous exhibitions at the interface of the
sciences and the humanities, exploring issues inside and outside of the research lab.
To learn more, visit startgallery.wfu.edu/opportunities/start-dt.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO THRIVE IN THE CITYWake Downtown is where tradition meets innovation.
In an urban setting, undergraduate engineering and
biomedical sciences programs are infused with the
liberal arts. Wake Downtown also has a unique approach
to the Wake Forest tradition of serving our community.
Partnering with fellow educational institutions in the
area as well as youth-serving organizations, Wake
Downtown hosts and facilitates STEM pipeline activities
to cultivate interest in STEM-focused careers and higher
education. The collective expertise of researchers
and educators from Wake Forest and the surrounding
community enriches these experiences and has proven
beneficial to all involved.
Wake Downtown also shares physical space with
visitors and area residents, offering a multitude of
resources including classrooms, meeting rooms and
group gathering areas. Community relationships have
flourished as Wake Downtown continues to create
promising partnerships with our downtown neighbors.
