REAL CLIENTS. REAL STORIES.I LOST MY MIND, ONCE I LOST MY HUSBANDRobin had a steady job with the State of NH, when she lost her husband of 15 years from illness. Her husband was her life. They did everything together from eating meals together to paying bills together. For her, the loss was too much to bear. She felt numb and turned to heroin. She lost her job and her home was foreclosed. She moved to Florida, hoping for a fresh start with her family, but it wasn’t enough. She returned to New Hampshire and sought treatment, then relapsed. She attempted suicide. In her words, she described the crossroads she was facing, “I failed at killing myself. Now, I have no other choice than to get better.”

EVERYWHERE I’VE GONE FOR HELP, I HAVE FELT WELCOMENew Horizons was Robin’s home for two weeks. “The hardest part for me was carrying around my stuff during the day. It’s exhausting being outside all day. I was on public display. I felt degraded.” Angie’s Shelter was her next step, where she felt relief since the house is open during the day to her. She says Angie’s is like a sisterhood. Her best friend is here too, a story that mirrors hers in an uncanny way. Her roommate struggles with trust still sleeping with her shoes on, but she thinks she’s coming around.

I HAVE TO BE OK WITH ME“I used to think I had a black cloud over me, but of course, it was me. It was drugs and it was not paying bills. I understand now, that my thoughts are my reality. My huge fear is my finances once I get a job again. That, and using drugs again. I’ve learned that the more I share my fears, the more I’ll get help. I don’t see a black cloud over me anymore. I have to move forward. I’m trying to find my purpose on earth. I can’t predict the future, but with my blanket of services wrapped around me, I think I’ll be okay.”

PRESIDENT'S CORNERDear Friends:

It has been an exciting time for Families in Transition-New Horizons through the first seven months of our merger. Over this time period, I’ve had the great pleasure to meet many of you at our events, during shelter tours, and in the community. Please remember, I am always available to talk or meet with you to listen to your thoughts, recommendations, and to let you know what we are up to.

We’re working towards a more integrated service delivery for our participants and trying to eliminate gaps in services so that we can enhance our programming and serve more people in need. To do this, we’re having listening sessions with our clients to get their feedback. In addition, this fall, a cross section of our staff will travel to and learn from other nonprofit providers who provide shelter and food services who have implemented best practices. To me, it is always important to look up and out to learn from others and assess what may work for those we shelter and feed.

Your continued support, now more than ever, is critical to our success. We truly appreciate all that you do for our organization and the people whom we serve. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Warm regards,

Maureen BeauregardPresident

Proud To Be PartnersCongratulations to the Healthcare for the Homeless team which has been recognized by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) with a 2017 Quality Improvement Award. The clinic achieved the best overall clinical performance among all HRSA-granted health centers. Healthcare for the Homeless is partnered with New Horizons and located in our building.

Serving Team SpotlightThank you Citizens Bank for serving dinner in our soup kitchen for close to 20 years!

Greenhouse Happenings The Hunger ProjectEach year elementary school students learn about gardening through the New Horizons Hunger Project. Students participate in a learning unit on gardening, start and nurture seedlings in their school, then come to our greenhouse to transplant them. While visiting they also get a tour of New Horizons. Second and third grade students planted zucchini in our greenhouse, which they grew from seed in four Manchester schools as part of the New Horizons Hunger Project. Wilson School, Gossler Park School, Bakersville School and St. Casimir School all provide this educational and meaningful opportunity to their students.

This wonderful Hunger Project is made possible by an annual grant from the Telecom Pioneers of America, Jasper N. Keller Chapter 33!

Vegetables and herbs are grown in the ideal conditions of our greenhouse and are a welcome addition to the 200 salads and entrees made each day for our clients. The greenhouse is staffed by a collaborative of wonderful volunteers and sits in a lot adjacent to our facility. Our greenhouse has been producing vegetables and herbs, saving us money on fresh produce, for five years.

Sean McDonald of WMUR’s Chronicle program taped an upcoming show about our greenhouse!

ORGANIZATION IN ACTION Pizza Garden Plans and More! A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held at our Hollows Community Garden and Learning Center, in Manchester, which will serve as a community garden, learning center and park. The plans include a garden with all the fresh fixings for a pizza!

New Hope in Carroll County - The grand opening of our Hope House, in Wolfeboro, was held in June. This is the first transitional housing option of its kind in the Governor Wentworth Regional School District, offering housing and services to families in need.

Moving Mountains - President Maureen Beauregard accepting Citizen of the Year from the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

Stronger Together! First joint all-staff meeting of Families in Transition - New Horizons. Staff learned about the organization as a whole and plans for the future.

A Time to Reflect - In June a “Coffee and Conversation” open house was held. Over a dozen donors and clients came to hear about, and have questions answered regarding, our merged organization.
