The Numbers Tell The Story:

An estimated 1.7 million traumatic brain injury deaths, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations occur annually in the United States. When you add in the number of acquired and undiagnosed injuries, the numbers increase substantially.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) further estimates the financial tally of direct medical costs, combined with indirect costs such as lost productivity, add up to almost $60 billion.

But the real story, the one embedded in the lives of brain injury survivors, their families, friends, and caregivers, goes far beyond the numbers and statistics. The personal impact of brain injury can be devastating. It can create despair for individuals, upheaval in families, and a need for long-term or even life-long assistance to carry out the most basic activi-ties of daily living. It is at this juncture of complex medical condition, serious public health problem and human need that the work of the Brain Injury Association of California (BIACAL) begins and continues.

BIACAL Walk For Brain Injury

Brain Injury Association of California

What We Do;

The Brain Injury Association of California (BIACAL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the state of California, and chartered state affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA). Our mission is to be the Voice of Brain Injury. Through advocacy, education and research, we bring help, hope and healing to thousands of individuals living with brain injury, their families and the professionals who serve them. Below is a summary of what we do:

• Participate in the National Brain Injury Information Center network and respond to calls and emails from individuals requesting information and resources.• Maintain our website that provides information about brain injury, resources, legislative activities, research studies, news, support groups, and events. Our website averages between 2,000 – 4,000 hits per month.• Distribute quarterly newsletters via email blasts.• Host two educational conferences per year; one of which is specifically for persons with brain injury, caregivers, family and professionals, and the other conference is specifically designed for medical and legal professionals.• Legislative advocacy – We continue to work closely with our legislative consultant and California legislators who support our vision to introduce the Brain Injury Access to Treatment Act. In addition, we provide letters of support testimony to further advance both California and national legislation.

In all these endeavors, BIACAL receives no federal, state or other municipal funding. The organization relies solely on donations, membership dues, sponsorships, and proceeds from fund raising activities to carry out our extensive programs and services.

Page 4: WALK FOR BRAIN INJURY 2013

When we first started the Walks across the state in 2008, it was the vision of our Board Chairman, Dr. Mark Ashley, to invite other nonprofit organi-zations to join us as Host Organizations. Together we have achieved our goal to increase the number of walks across the state from 3 to 13, and promote awareness of brain injury, increase participation, and raise funds for BIACAL and the Host Organizations so that all may continue to serve persons with brain injury throughout the state. 2013 marks the first year with our new name and new logo. We are very excited about this change as we have increased our branding with the Brain Injury Associa-tion of America. The new name and logo will become nationally rec-ognized as other state affiliates will be using this logo and helping to raise aware-ness of brain injury. (You will notice that throughout this brochure, photos from past walks are used with the old Walk For Thought logo). We begin the Walks in March, Brain Injury Awareness Month, and due to the increase in walk sites, the walks will be held from March 2 to May 5, 2013. You will also notice that we are trying something new in Bakersfield this year. We will host a Walk, Run, & Ride that includes a total of 4 events (Walk, 5K Run, Bike Ride and Motor-

6th Annual Walk For Brain Injury A New Name & New Logo

cycle Ride), all on the same day and same venue with the intent to reach out to other demographics and in-crease the overall awareness of brain injury. These events are a pilot pro-gram that we hope to roll out across the state in future years. Walk For Brain Injury is BIACAL’s largest awareness and fundrais-

ing campaign and we encourage all registrants to actively raise funds to help support the ongoing efforts of BIACAL and the nonprofit host organiza-tions so they may continue to provide programs and services in their respective communities. Please join us at a walk site near you. Register online today and create your individual and/or team fundraising page. You can make a difference by en-couraging others to do the same. Register Early – all fees will be increased by $5 effective two weeks prior

to the walk date. Walk-up registra-tions are welcome at the increased fee. (T-shirts cannot be guaranteed if registered less than two weeks prior to the walk). Watch the website for updates for each of the walk sites. The walks will be held rain or shine so come prepared in the event of rain. In the event of torrential rain or other severe weather, check the Walk For Brain Injury registration website for the latest information and updates.
