Debating

Never Such Innocence Update

Last week, boys from Year 9 and 10 were involved in events organised by the charity Never Such Innocence whose aim is to educate, inspire and involve young people in the centenary activities. On Tuesday 19th September, a music workshop was put on in school with pupils having the opportunity to write songs supervised by Ashley Buxton, Director of Music. On Friday 22nd September, 32 pupils from Year 9 travelled to Birmingham’s Council House where Oliver Gray-Nimmo, Ellls McKenzie and Joel Stainthorpe recited their poems based on World War One superbly well. Accompanied by Ruth Hearn, Hannah Storey, Stephanie Langham and Kate Steadman, the boys heard presentations from several schools as well as speeches from Lady Lucy French, great-granddaughter of Field Marshal Sir John French who commanded the British Expeditionary Forces from 1914-1915 and Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, Chief of the Air Staff in the Royal Air Force. Never Such Innocence are running a poetry, art and song competition this year with the closing entry date of 16th March 2018. For more details visit their website at www.neversuchinnocence.com where there are also details about the free and secure app Trackd to help budding songwriters.

Don't forget to join Debating on Wednesdays at 13:15 in Old Big School with Mr Robson. Next Wednesday's motion is: 'This house believes sportsmen and women should only be allowed to play if they are good role models'. Students can bring sandwiches to the session in Old Big School.

Extra-Curricular Activities in School

Is your son or daughter making the most of the Vesey Experience. Get involved, meet new people and have fun.

Year 10 Welcome Evening

Thank you to Mr Williams, Mr Bowen and Mrs Hodkinson for their contributions to last night's Welcome Evening. Mr Williams is sending all the information to every parent. Hope you find it useful.

Assemblies this week

There have been some excellent assemblies this week. Miss Hearn, Deputy Headteacher, has been talking to the boys about the very important 'Be Kind' campaign. Why don't you ask your son in KS3 about it? Meanwhile Sixth Form students, Declan Mee, Marquez Sinclair and Harry West and Jai Walia did super presentations to Year 11 on A Level History and A Level PE. Mr Nowek also did a very thought-provoking input on UCAS.

Centrestage Lunchtime Drama Workshops

Lunchtime Drama Workshops will run on Tuesdays beginning Tuesday 3 October. This will lead to after school sessions from January, where the students will use the skills they have learned to prepare for a performance. Sessions will then take place on either Monday or Tuesday from 15:25 to 16:45. The KS3 performance is planned for the end of the summer term 2018. Pupils who sign up the classes in the Autumn term are more likely to be considered for roles in the summer performance. To secure your child's place initially for the autumn term lunchtime drama, please send full fees of £60 (£50 for LAMDA students) to Mrs Foster at the School Club Office. A form (already emailed to parents) must also be returned with the fees to confirm the place.

Communication

All students are expected to turn phones off on arrival at school. Therefore, if you need to get an urgent message to your son or daughter, please contact the main school office.

PAC Chair Vacancy

Could you be the new Chair of Bishop Vesey's Grammar School PAC? John Beggan is stepping down as the Chair of the PAC after a number of years of great service to the school. We are looking to find a new Chair from the parent body. We have a wonderfully supportive committee who will be very helpful in supporting any new Chair. If you would like a chat about what's involved, don't hesitate to contact me on [email protected] or John Beggan himself on [email protected].

Parking

Please respect our neighbours by not parking or collecting your sons from Boswell Road or the surrounding estate. Please note that traffic cameras are regularly in operation on Boswell Road. It is essential that we avoid traffic congestion on Boswell Road - traffic problems are a nuisance to our neighbours and pose a health and safety risk to our children. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Pavilion Re-Vamp

Many thanks to Maxine Hanley and the band of parents assisting with the re-vamp of The Pavilion. We appreciate the support being given by one of our corporate partners, and Old Veseyan, Doug Hunt from Honeybourne. However, as the saying goes 'many hands make light work'. If you are interested in helping, please email [email protected]. We would welcome donations of black gloss Cuprinol, white masonry paint and white exterior wood paint. We will especially need some painters.

Some excellent ideas have been submitted about what to do with our tyres. Watch this space!

Sporting Success

1st team Hockey secured back to back wins after a fantastic 4-0 away win over Bromsgrove 1st team. Goals for Yr 11s George Hounslow and Malachi Searchwell Snape as well as Archie Sansome and Jainan Patel. The juniors started their fixtures with the U15A going down 4-2 to KES Birmingham but with a much improved second half, U15B team winning 6-1, U14B drawing 2-2 in an enthralling end to end contest, U14B narrowly losing 2-1 after conceding late goals. All were against KES Birmingham. U13 results were amazing: U13A beat KES Birmingham 6-0, U13B beat KES Birmingham 3-0 and U15A beat Solihull School 6-0! Elsewhere we had some competitive rugby fixtures last Saturday against Loughborough Grammar School. Meanwhile in the NatWest we beat King Henry VIII 52-29 and Year 7 had a lot of fun against Bromsgrove School. Hope you enjoy some good footage of the matches below. As you know, we like to be competitive at sport. But the most important thing for us, is the spirit in which it is played. We have always sought to play with dignity and respect for the opposition and each other. Thank you to all of the parents for your encouragement of the boys in this.
