Introduction

The new Walking style X introduces a complete new concept of measuring activities based on the Metabolic Equivalent (MET). This concept enables users to accurately measure physical activity and explicitly takes the different physiques of these users into account. MET is based on the Resting Metabolism Rate of the individual user and compares the intensity of the physical activity in relation to this rate. The intensity in combination with the duration of the physical activity is calculated by the device based on the individuals input.

The Walking style X is a great motivator for outdoor activities as it sets weekly targets and adapts them to the user’s daily activities.

Definitions

Basic Metabolic Rate

The energy expended by the body at rest to maintain normal functioning.

MET (Metabolic Equivalent)

A unit of Metabolic Equivalent, or MET, is defined as a person’s working

metabolic rate relative to the resting metabolic rate.

One MET is defined as 1 KCAL per kilogram per hour and is the caloric

consumption of a person while at complete rest.

Exercise Unit

This is the person’s working metabolic rate (intensity of exercise) multiplied by

time (Exercise Unit=MET * Time)

Target Exercise

Based on the guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine 21

Exercise Units is the recommended weekly target

Definitions (cont.)

KCAL

1 KCAL is the amount of heat (energy) needed to increase the temperature of one kg of water by 1°C.This unit is commonly used to express food energy.

Trip

Number of steps since the trip function was manually reset

Met indicator

Displays the intensity of the last 1 minute’s walk (2 to 4 METs)

Feature – Benefit - Advantage

Feature Benefit AdvantageMET(= Metabolic Equivalent)

Basic Metabolic Rate Enables comparison as a unit and a concept

Exercise Units (Ex)(3 Ex = 1 h * 3 MET)

MET * Time (h) Combines time and intensity

21 Ex as weekly goal Requirement/presetting to treat/fight against obesity

Prevention of Lifestyle-related diseases (Metabolic Syndrome)

MET-display (2-4 METs) To show the current intensity of physical activity

Display of intensity, motivates the user

KCAL-display Display of spent energy volume (1 kcal/kg/h for Resting Metabolic Rate)

Helps user to balance energy intake and emission

Trip meter Determination of cumulative steps in individual set time-frame

Motivation through high number of steps; average calculation

Memory(4 weeks for Ex-units)

Information on Ex-units per week for 4 weeks

Memory of achieved goals; motivation to further increase physical activity

Memory (7 days for other functions)

Information per day for 7 days Saves achieved goals; motivation to further increase physical activity

3-D Sensor Flexible placement of the device High accuracy

Q & A

1. What are the features of the new sensor in WS X?The new sensor is a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS).MEMS can detect acceleration in three directions and is therefore very accurate

2. What is the information of Body Height used for?To calculate Exercise units and METs, but not the distance

3. Does the WS X count intensity above 4 MET?Yes

4. When are Exercise steps counted?Exercise steps are counted after 20 sec walking with 3 METs or more
