Once you gain experience and your business is off the ground, you might consider offering vinyl and canvas mural products along with installation for those customers

who want permanent installations. Given that these products are a little more difficult and time consuming to install you’ll need to charge a higher rate for installation.

Offering these products is completely optional and many business owners decide to only offer the repositionable/removable product.

Please note that these products are not for installation on paneling, textured wall surfaces or cinder blocks. The wall surface must be smooth for proper installation.

Service Product Selection

As a mural professional you’ll assist customers with product selection by showing them the various categories and options available. You’ll assist them with choosing the right size for their room and provide them with size and pricing options to work within their

budget.

What size wall mural will be right for your customer’s room? Murals are custom ordered so any size is possible. Your customers get to choose from thousands of images and then specify the size that best fits their situation-from a

minimum of 4' x 6' to a mural that covers an entire wall. When determining what size to order, keep in mind that a full wall mural is going to

offer the greatest impact and is ultimately the best value for your customers. When it comes to wall murals, size truly does matter. A partial wall mural will add color, texture, interest and, if you wish, provide a theme to your space. However a full wall

mural will provide extraordinary drama and help you transform a room from boring to incredible. Once your prospective customer start viewing the options they will truly be amazed and excited.

Murals are also a great solution for business customers. Business owners are always looking for ways to stand out from competitors and adding a wall mural can make a

great impact on their office space. Business owners can stimulate creative ideas by using a colorful mural on a conference

room wall or choose a cityscape for an upscale restaurant, a mountain landscape for your mountaineering store or a tropical theme for a scuba shop. You can do an entire wall or just a portion. Put a panoramic landscape above a sofa or a tall, narrow

lighthouse mural on a tall, narrow wall. Murals are truly custom so you’ll always be able to propose some options to prospective business customers.

Offering your services to businesses is a great way to become very profitable by providing your niche services.

Installation

As a mural professional, you’ll also handle the installation of the mural as your primary service offering. While there are some people who are do-it-yourselfers, the vast

majority of people are intimidated by a wall mural installation project. Your niche service will save people time, reduce stress and allow them to quickly

transform any room or space into a truly impressive environment. Your services will quickly become in-demand as you obtain referrals and earn an excellent reputation in

your area.

As with any business, some prospects might say “can’t I do it myself ?” The answer is Yes, however once you explain that you can eliminate the stress of such a project and

ensure a fast high quality installation you’ll be able to close the sale. We’ll explain in detail later in the instruction manual just how you can effectively work with customers to easily close sales.

Your service will offer customers the following primary benefits:

Ensure proper and concise mural measurement

Eliminate Stress Save Time Ensure a high quality long lasting installation

Pricing

As an independent business owner you are free to set pricing. We suggest using a clear, simple and fair pricing strategy to encourage sales and customer satisfaction. A

flat rate installation pricing structure based on mural size works well and is recommended. We suggest you profit on the installation charges and charge the client for the actual mural cost from the supplier which is determined using the online

calculator. Visit the www.MuralSource.com website; choose the ‘Murals Your Way’ supplier. Once on the supplier website, choose the top link for ‘How it Works’ then

Inspection Always start by first inspecting the entire mural prior to installation. It is best to do

your inspection prior to arriving at the client site to ensure that your client has an excellent installation experience.

checked:

Mural is the correct one ordered (check against your customer order sheet)

Mural has no damage from shipping

Preparation – Before you Begin

Never Pre-Trim the Mural – Your wall or ceiling line may be slightly off

Never adhere mural to cinder block, paneling or textured wall surface without

properly prepping the wall to create a smooth surface

Paint the Wall, if necessary. The best wall surface is a wall painted with two

coats of flat latex paint

Wash off grease or dirt and rinse with warm water, products such as Dirtex work

very well. The entire wall should be perfectly clean.

Fill cracks and holes with spackling compound, and sand until smooth. The

SmartStick® Removable Mural Installation

Make a level guideline on the wall (Using a Level)

Use a pencil to lightly mark the desired starting point for your mural on the wall.

Use the top left corner of your mural to begin. Then measure the width of the panel, and make a 2nd point where it ends (across horizontally, not vertically).

From this point, use your level to make a straight vertical line approximately 3 feet in length. This will be your guideline for the right hand side of your first mural panel.

NOTE: Your mural may have a bleed area

Your mural may have as much as a 1 inch bleed (extra image area) around all

sides of the mural panel(s). This is to accommodate irregular wall and ceiling lines. After installation, you may trim out the bleed area if necessary.

Peel and stick your mural panel

Start at the top left of the panel and peel back the liner roughly 2-3 inches.

Lining up with your pencil guideline, apply the adhesive side of the mural panel to the wall, smoothing it onto the wall with your hands. DO NOT peel off the

entire liner all at once. Slowly and evenly peel back the liner a few inches at a time and apply to the wall. Consider having another person hold the bottom of the mural as you apply from top down. Remove and re-start if necessary to

ensure the mural is aligned to your pencil guideline.

Smooth all wrinkles and bubbles outward, until they are removed. Do not use

pressure. Simple light strokes work best. Be careful not to stretch the mural while positioning. If wrinkles or bubbles appear, simply peel back the panel and reapply that section.

Additional panel installation

Align panel #2 to panel #1. When matching panel #2 to panel #1, there will be a 2” overlap. This is correct. Simply match the pattern of the mural overlapping the panels. DO NOT install the panels with edges butt together. Repeat step #3

to apply any remaining panels. You may wrap a panel around an outside corner.

Trim overage

When all panels have been adhered, trim any ceiling and baseboard overage, as well as any corners using your straight edge (12 in. taping knife) and razor knife.

Go slowly, pressing straight edge firmly into the corner and cutting along the

straight edge. Change razor blades often for the best result.

NOTE: Your SmartStick® mural can be removed and reused without damaging your wall. Consider keeping the liner if you are thinking of re-using the mural in the future.

Vinyl Installation

Before you begin

One person may perform the installation however two people simplifies the job.

Never hang a vinyl mural over existing wallpaper; wallpaper must be removed

prior to installation.

Never start the adhesive process until the wall surface has been properly

prepared, all of the measurements have been double-checked and the necessary tools are ready.

Tools Needed for Vinyl Installation:

Pre-mixed medium to heavy weight wall covering adhesive.

Smoothing brush Straight edge (for trimming) Sharp blade (snap off style) to cut the mural

Tape measure Pasting brush or 4” foam roller Drop cloths

Clean damp sponge

Make a level guideline on the wall (Using a Level)

Use a pencil to mark the desired starting point for your mural on the wall. Use the top left corner of your mural to begin. Then measure the width of the panel, and make a 2nd point where it ends (across horizontally, not vertically).

From this point, use your level to make a straight vertical line approximately 3

feet in length. This will be your guideline for the right hand side of your first

mural panel. The success of your project depends on having the first strip straight.

NOTE: Your mural may have a bleed area Your mural may have as much as a 1 inch bleed (extra image area) around all sides of the mural panel(s). This is to accommodate irregular wall and ceiling

lines. After installation, you may trim out the bleed area if necessary.

Apply adhesive and place 1st panel on wall

Lay panel on clean, flat surface (backside up).

Evenly apply medium to heavy weight premixed adhesive, with pasting brush, to

back of mural panel.

Apply the panel to the wall; slide the panel into position so the right hand side of

it touches your guideline.

Be careful not to stretch the mural while positioning.

Additional panel installation

Align panel #2 to panel #1. When matching panel #2 to panel #1, there will be a 2” overlap. This is correct. Simply match the pattern of the mural overlapping the panels. DO NOT install the panels with edges butt together. Repeat step #5

to apply any remaining panels. You may wrap a panel around an outside corner.

You may optionally apply a vinyl to vinyl adhesive at the overlap to keep the

panel edges from curling over time.

Trim overage

When all panels have been adhered, trim any ceiling and baseboard overage, as

well as any corners using your straight edge (12 in. taping knife) and razor knife.

Go slowly, pressing straight edge firmly into the corner and cutting along the

Double-Cutting Option for Seams

Wallpaper murals that are larger than 52 inches wide or tall will be printed on two or more panels. Matching seams between the panels is very simple to do with the

following double cut system. Each panel will be printed with a 2-inch overlap at the seam. To make the seams match without overlapping the edges you can follow these easy instructions to double-cut the seams for a clean look with no overlap:

Install the first panel

Making sure the panel is level.

Install the second panel

Knowing that exactly 2 inches will overlap the first panel, you'll be able to line up

the image easily with the overlap and by keeping the second panel level. Review the image before doing any cutting.

Evaluate the Seam

Some wallpaper mural designs won't show the overlapped seam, and if you like, you can leave it installed that way. But if the seam does show you may prefer to

double cut it. If so, take a straight edge (such as a level) and a razor and slice the mural through the two layers directly in the middle of the seam, or 1 inch in from both edges of the overlap.

Hint: When cutting along the straight edge with your razor, keep the razor in the seam during the entire cut. When you need to readjust your position, hold the razor

steady and slide the straight edge down for the next cut. This will help keep the seam smooth and professional. Always use a new razor for each job.

Gently peel away the two top layers of overlapped material

Your seams will now be perfectly matched and clean cut.

Continue to install panels

Double cut the seams in the same manner until your entire mural is hung.

Practice

Practicing is an important first step to starting your new business. You’ll have fun, build confidence and the necessary skills to go out and perform installations for customers.

Take your time and practice. After a couple panels you will find that it’s fun and easy! No need to feel any pressure since you can simply remove the wall covering and start over using the repositionable SmartStick type of mural.

Measuring Wall

Once you have decided on the wall you want to enhance with a mural, you will need to decide what portion of the wall you want covered. Keep in mind that a

full wall mural is going to offer you the greatest impact and is ultimately the best value for your money. This is one instance where size truly does matter. A partial wall mural will add color, texture, interest and, if you wish, provide a

theme to your space. However a full wall mural will provide extraordinary drama and help you transform a room from ho-hum to incredibly chic.

A great way to see how a mural will look on your wall is to try the "virtual room" feature from the mural source website. Simply click on an image from the extensive directory and then on the "virtual room" link below the image. You'll

be able to see how a mural will look in different sizes with different combinations of furniture. You may find that your ideal selection may include a wall mural

above a sofa or behind a desk or headboard. You get to choose the exact dimensions that fit your space. It’s a great tool you can use to help your customers choose a product as well.

Once you have decided on the best size, measure the wall several times to ensure an accurate measurement. Laser or sonic measuring tools work great

and save time.

Measuring tips (full wall)

Width - measure the horizontal distance from corner to corner.

Height- we recommend that you measure the vertical height at each

corner as walls are never perfectly square. If different, select the greater

of the two height measurements.

Measuring tips (partial wall)

Submit your exact measurements of your desired mural space.

Note: Our supplier can create all custom size murals based on the specific dimensions that you provide. To allow for slightly uneven wall dimensions an

extra inch of bleed is added to the height and width of each mural section, or panel. This extra material can be easily trimmed away once the mural application is complete.

Select Mural

Select a mural of your choosing to enhance your own personal home. We suggest you choose two murals, one for a full wall and another for a partial wall

so you can practice installing both. Order your repositionable mural from our affiliate link to ensure the best pricing:

Website: www.MuralSource.com

We suggest you start by choosing the SmartStick® Repositionable product from our partner supplier Environmental Graphics.

Once your order is placed review the installation instructions once again and

ensure you have all the supplies ready so you’ll be ready once your order arrives.

Install

Install the product using the detailed instructions provided in this guide.

Note:

Save the backing paper from your mural

Do not trim your full wall mural at the top, bottom and sides just yet

Remove

Remove each wall mural section one at a time. Reapply the backing paper and set aside.

Repeat installation as many times as necessary to build your confidence.

Trim

Once you are confident and have completed your practice installation its time to trim the mural at the ceiling and baseboard.

Trimming Along Ceiling

Carefully place your straight edge into the corner between the wall and the

ceiling angling slightly downward toward the wall. A 10 inch Wall Board taping knife works well to ensure the wall covering is tight into the corner.

Using a sharp razor knife, slowly trim the wall mural across the top of the straight edge. Slowly work your way across the entire top of the mural trimming

the excess wall covering. Once you’ve trimmed along the top of the straight edge width, slide the straight edge across and repeat for the entire width of the wall.

Trimming Along Baseboards

Carefully place your straight edge into the space between the wall and the ceiling

angling slightly back towards the wall. A 10 inch Wall Board taping knife works well to ensure the wall covering is tight into the corner.

Using a sharp razor knife, slowly trim the wall mural across the top of the straight edge. Slowly work your way across the entire bottom of the mural trimming the excess wall covering. Once you’ve trimmed along the straight edge

width, slide the straight edge across and repeat for the entire width of the wall.

Trimming Inside Corners

Starting at ceiling, carefully place your straight edge into the inside corner

angling slightly towards the mural covered wall. A 10 inch Wall Board taping knife works well to ensure the wall covering is tight into the corner.

Using a sharp razor knife, slowly trim the wall mural down the top of the straight edge. Slowly work your way down the entire inside corner trimming the excess wall covering. Once you’ve trimmed along the straight edge width, slide the

straight edge down and repeat for the entire height. Outside Corners

If your mural installation involves an outside corner, there may be the need to trim a very small amount (sixteenths of an inch) vertically on the outside corner

if it is not perfectly straight. If you feel this is necessary, one method that works well is to use a break-off

style razor blade (not yet used so that it is very sharp) and extend it out a few inches. Simply slide the razor slowly down the outside corner from top to

bottom to trim the excess.

Initial Contact

General Information Initial contact may be made by potential customers in a variety of ways such as by phone, email or in person if you decide to setup a booth at home shows.

The most common ways are by phone and email after a potential customer sees your ad or picks up a brochure in a local business.

Regardless of how you are contacted, you should be well prepared to provide information about your services and pricing.

First, instill confidence by sharing that you are fully insured and can provide references if requested. It also helps to be part of any local business

organizations such as a local chamber of commerce. Also, be sure to mention that you are a member of the National Mural Association located at: www.MuralProfessionals.com.

Your website is a great way to easily provide information to potential customers. Many people will review information about your business online prior to calling

which saves time and makes it easier to setup an appointment. Request that your free web page is setup specifying your service offerings as part of your

membership in the National Association. You will get a web address to share with potential customers as follows: www.MuralProfessionals.com/yourname

Keep your pricing & services sheet provided in the business kit resources readily available to you can quickly convey price ranges based on mural size.

Also communicate that the unique Smart Stick removable mural product takes the pressure off any decisions since it can be removed with no wall damage which may help some people move forward with purchasing one.

Setup an appointment Offer to setup a personal meeting at the potential customer’s home to personally

inspect their space and to review all the mural options for their space. It helps to take pressure off the potential customer by ensuring that there is

absolutely no obligation and your visit is free of charge. Getting in front of the customer face to face is very important to closing the sale which we’ll discuss in the next step.

Meeting

Examine Space Look over the space or spaces proposed by the client. Check the wall surfaces to see if any repairs are necessary to make the surface smooth. As discussed in

installation preparation section of this guide, ensure that you have a smooth surface for installation.

Make notes on any required preparation to create a smooth surface, number of edges requiring trimming and switch plates for including in the estimate.

Measure Measure the proposed space or spaces as instructed earlier in this guide.

Show Product Start by showing the prospective customer samples of the actual product. A great sales technique is to purchase a few samples of the Smart Stick product

which you can bring to the client’s home, stick on a wall and show how it works. Next, provide the client with the ‘Categories’ sheet from the Resources CD which

contains all of these exciting categories:

Animals Architectural Beach and Tropical

Beatrix Potter™ Cities and Cityscapes Coastal Landscapes

Contemporary Graphics Dinosaur Train Disney™

Famous Artwork Fantasy and Mythology Food, Drink and Entertainment

Garfield® Italian Kids Rooms

Maps and Flags Nature Religious/Spiritual

Repositionable Wallpaper Retro/Vintage Sea Life

Amazing Murals™ Business

30

The categories sheet will also contain the website address where your clients may go if they are not able to make a selection the same day.

Get Online using a laptop computer to show your customer the great designs available, bring a laptop computer with a mobile wireless card (for internet

access) to your client’s home. If you don’t have a laptop, you only need an inexpensive one from Walmart for

$300 to $400 with a 15” to 16” display. You’ll also need a mobile wireless card to plug in and get internet access out at the customer’s home. Major providers such as Verizon and AT & T offer mobile wireless service for your laptop for a fee

of approximately $50 per month. The cost of your mobile wireless service will be tax deductible as a business expense.

As another option, you can also have the customer get online with their home computer however it is more professional if you have your own computer available.

Help the customer focus in on the category and design which meets their style and needs.

Personalization is another great option to offer your clients and available from

our supplier for a small up charge. Personalization allows you to include a name or other words printed directly on the mural. Children especially enjoy having their name printed as part of the mural. It’s also great for business installations

to include a company name, logo or slogan. A typical personalization graphics charge is from $15 to $40.

In addition, murals can also be created from customs images provided by the client for a truly unique mural.

Estimate Visit the www.MuralSource.com website, once on the supplier site click the link for ‘How To’ at the top then the link for ‘Pricing’. Enter the dimensions

and material for a quick price quote. Work within your client’s budget by suggesting different size options. For

example, of installing a mural on an entire wall surface is too expensive for their budget, suggest a smaller 4’ x 6’ size centered on a wall.

Using the Estimate Sheet included on the CD in the kit, provide the customer with an estimate to include the following items:

Mural Size

Wall Preparation (if necessary)

Mural Cost

Installation (including trimming)

31

Copy the customer details for your records or use estimate forms from your local

office store which provides a duplicate copy. Place your copy of the customer estimate aside or on a calendar for follow up one week later.

Cross-Sell Cross selling services is a great way to grow your business and increase income. Your Amazing Mural business also includes complete materials which will allow

you to offer professional quality glow-in-the-dark star murals for your customers. If you decide to offer start ceiling murals, provide your customer with a brochure

and marketing materials for their consideration. It’s a great opportunity to offer an additional product and is a high profit service since the system allows you to install a star mural quickly at a very low cost for materials. Once you practice

the techniques explained in the guide, you’ll find that you can rapidly install these murals which are very exciting to put in place for your customers.

You’ll have a variety of options to present from simple basic murals to those which are more complex. Even if your customer is not interested immediately, you’ll find that many will contact you at a later time. A star mural can make a

great gift for a child’s room and is very popular.

Close Sale

Review Guarantee

Providing a rock solid guarantee is a key component to closing a sale. By ensuring that your customer is 100% satisfied with their mural choice you can greatly increase sales.

Our key partner Environmental Graphics offers a best in the business guarantee when purchasing a wall mural which ensures complete satisfaction. Visit the

www.MuralSource.com website and click through to our partner site(s) to review their Guarantee to see the details. Convey to your customer that if they are not satisfied with their mural 100% that it can be exchanged for a

replacement. You can decide if you’ll waive the installation charge or charge a reduced

additional fee for reinstalling the new mural. Accept Deposit

Ask your customer to make a $100 deposit in order to get on your installation schedule and show their commitment. Since you will be ordering the mural, it is important to ensure the customer is serious about completing the installation.

You can choose to accept a larger deposit however a smaller deposit will often times make it easier to close the sale.

Product Selection Process Provide your customer with the Product Selection information sheet included on the CD in the kit which provides them with instructions to view their mural

choices online.

Explain that there is no pressure to make their selection immediately and they

are free to review the options online and discuss with their family and friends. Suggest making a decision within a week so that you can order the mural which

typically takes approximately a week to 10 days to receive. Rush orders are possible for an additional fee.

Provide Marketing Materials for friends & family Provide your customer with some extra brochures and business cards for their

friends and family members. It is very common to obtain word of mouth referrals from your customers. Providing extra marketing materials makes it easy for them to pass on information about your services and is definitely worth

the effort. In addition, consider attaching a time sensitive discount coupon to each brochure

which encourages customers to share the information soon. We also suggest you show appreciation to your customers for providing referrals

by offering them a discount on their next mural for their referral. Simply ask each new customer how they learned about your business and send them a

discount coupon and thank you note. Your small gesture of appreciation is worth the effort since many customers will purchase an additional mural.

Complete Job

Arrive On Time

Ensure that you arrive on-time for your appointment. It is important to make sure the process goes smoothly so the customer is completely satisfied and

confidently refers their friends and family to your business. Complete Installation

Prior to arriving onsite, ensure that you have first inspected the Mural to ensure that it is the one chosen by the customer and is not damaged in any way.

Follow the installation instructions as detailed earlier in this guide. Be sure to clean up the area once the installation has been completed.

Take Photos Ask the customer for permission to take a quick photo or two for your portfolio which is helpful when visiting clients to obtain new business.

Collect Payment Collect the remaining balance from the customer. Ensure that you deduct any

deposits made when they placed their initial order. Consider low cost credit card processors which have the capability to swipe credit cards via your Smartphone (iPhone, Android etc..) such as: www.squareup.com or www.PayPal.com

These service providers allow you to use an existing phone to easily capture credit card payments and email a receipt to your customer.

Provide Marketing Materials Just as you did following your onsite customer visit, provide the customer with extra brochures and business cards for their friends and family members. It is

important to ensure that these are readily available since the customer will be excited about their new mural and want to show it to family and friends. Don’t forget to attach a time sensitive coupon which can greatly encourage sales. You

can offer a fixed amount off installation, discount on more than one mural or perhaps a discount on a combination of a wall mural any other products or services you offer.

Provide Testimonial Form Provide your customer with a testimonial form along with a self addressed

stamped envelope. Collect your customer testimonials and include them on your website to encourage sales.

You can also accumulate the testimonials and list them in a simple document. Print your updated testimonials and provide to customers when performing estimates.

Portfolio

One of the most powerful marketing tools is your own portfolio. You can easily build a

portfolio by using a 3 ring binder with clear sheet protectors. Following the completion of each job, include 3 pages for each client containing the following items:

Summary Sheet – Include mural name, style #, description and dimensions

Mural Photos – Include before and after pictures

Testimonial – Include customer testimonial sheet

It is also helpful to organize your portfolio into categories based on types of murals so that you can easily flip to the portfolio section based on a potential client’s interests. Simply insert some tab dividers to label the different categories making it easier to find

types of murals.

NOTE: All necessary forms and check lists are provided on the RESOURCES CD included in your startup kit.
