Great works of art can change lives – those of others as much as our own. Enjoying and exploring them makes us emotionally richer and gives us insights into history and into the lives of individuals and of society.
The Wallace Collection is one of Europe’s great art collections. In the twenty-five galleries are unsurpassed displays of French eighteenth-century paintings, furniture and porcelain, together with superb Old Master paintings. A magnificent collection of princely arms and armour is shown in four galleries and there are important displays of gold boxes, miniatures, sculpture and Medieval and Renaissance works of art.
The Collection does not aim to be systematic, instead, it is shaped by the passions and the personal tastes of outstanding collectors, all members of the same family. The four Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace were central players in the collecting landscape of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, outbidding the greatest collectors of Europe for the objects of their desire, chosen for their exceptional beauty and exquisite provenance.
Much of the Wallace Collection’s work is made possible only through the generosity of our individual supporters. As a national museum we receive a government grant which enables us to be open to the public free of charge, however, the Collection’s full potential could not be realised without the help of our supporters from the UK and further afield.
Annual support from the Benefactors of the Wallace Collection makes it possible for us to pursue our most crucial activities such as research, conservation, educational programmes and temporary exhibitions. As part of the Wallace Collection family, Benefactors are invited to join me and the curators to explore the rich cultural history assembled within the Collection.
It would be my great pleasure to welcome you among our Benefactors.
Dr Christoph Vogtherr, Director The Wallace Collection
