SECOND YEAR REPRESENTATIVE MALE (2 NOMINATIONS)

JAMES LITTLE (II) My name is James Little and I would like the privilege of being your second year rep. Second year of MD will bring a lot of challenges with the transition into the clinical phase of our course and we need someone who will be dedicated to the role and capable of juggling that commitment and ensuring our transition is as smooth as possible. I believe I have the qualities to be able to do this; I am hard working and diligent with everything I put my mind to but also approachable and friendly. In high school I was school captain and have learnt a lot in the years since which will hold me in good stead for being your year 2 rep. I will sign off as I did back then by encouraging you to think big but vote Little.

NIGEL CHANG (II) I might not know some of you, but I know what you want. If you are looking for a 2017 year rep, I just might be the one, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me an year rep excellent candidate. If you vote for me, that’ll be the end of it. I will listen to you, I will fight for you, but if you don’t, I will still see you in class, smile at you, but I will not kill you. These learning outcomes shall be fulfilled: 1. Represent your views on educational and course issues 2. Provision of regular feedback on issues raised 3. Advocate on issues affecting or specific to our year group 4. Conduct education surveys as required 5. Coordinate the distribution of information and correspondence from the faculty, WAMSS Executive and Committee to our year group 6. Overseeing and administering the year group social media page 7. Assisting with the promotion and ticket sales for various events throughout the year 8. Coordinating year group events

SECOND YEAR REPRESENTATIVE FEMALE (3 NOMINATIONS)

LAURA JOHNSTON (II) Salve! mihi nomen est Laura. That’s Latin for, “Hi! My name is Laura”. I expect that bit of Latin will assist your memory when thinking of who to vote for as @year2 rep. But just in case it doesn’t, I’ll continue. At UWA, I have worked as a PAL (study group) leader, PAL mentor, and a lab demonstrator. All of these roles involved a great deal of communication with both students and faculty, and managing their varying interests and priorities. I am approachable, accessible and will happily talk with anyone and everyone. I am ready and willing to devote the time and attention that this role needs. In fact, as part of my initial preparation for the role, my Facebook tag alerts are set to extra loud. I’ve also pre-emptively dedicated an email folder for concerns with clinical rotations. I would appreciate your vote for second year representative. If elected, I promise to work hard to ensure that the concerns of our year group continue to be addressed and that important issues are handled in an efficient and timely manner. Our second year is going to be a busy one, let’s work together to make sure it’s a great one!

ANNA KELLY (II) Hi everyone, my name is Anna! I am very excited to be running for the position of Second Year Representative as I believe I have both the relevant skills, experience and attitude for the position. I am the current Vice Chair of the Rider’s Consultancy Panel for PCAWA, where I take on a very similar role to Year Representative, liaising with other committees, the board and executive to make sure that the member’s voices are heard and accounted for in all decisions. As I see it the role of the Year Representative is to be your voice to both WAMSS and the Faculty and as someone who is rarely afraid to express an opinion I believe I am perfect for this role. I am very approachable (It’s definitely hard for me to hide with my hair colour), hard working, generally organized and love a solid bit of banter. So, I would love the opportunity to represent you, the MD Class of 2019, and to help make your experience in second year both as smooth and as fun as possible.

MUDRA SHAH (II) Hello! My name is Mudra and I’m super excited to be nominating for the position of second year representative in 2017. This role requires an enthusiastic individual who is committed, responsible and organised: qualities I believe I can bring to the table, along with some good quality banter! My experience with several committees over the past 4 years, including being the first year representative for our cohort this year for GPSN has allowed me to develop skills in effective communication, voicing our cohort’s preferences and balancing extra-curricular activities with study, all of which I will be able to apply to this role. Furthermore, I am very friendly and easily approachable, and my obsession with the colour yellow means I can be spotted almost anywhere on the campus! I also believe that medicine presents us with many challenges (*8am starts*) hence, I will strive to make our second year as easy as possible, focusing on simple things such as having updated lecture slides and having earlier access to relevant content. I hope that my efforts will also allow for an easier transition into our clinical years. This role will be challenging but I will strive to the best that I can and make sure our cohort’s preferences and problems are heard and resolved.

THIRD YEAR REPRESENTATIVE MALE (2 NOMINATIONS)

THOMAS IKONOMIDIS (III) G'day everyone, Those of you who don't know me I'm Tommy Ikonomidis. I'll be a great 3rd year representative. I was school captain of my primary school and really think this has prepared me for the role. As 3rd year rep I will take all concerns seriously and will respond to emails promptly. I am also the UWA representative on AVANT's Students Advisory Council which means I can advocate for change in medical indemnity, training and education. Thankyou for your consideration. Here's a photo of me winning the MIPS Cup for WAMSS. I love WAMSS.

STEPHEN MEEK (III) Hey! I’m Stephen and am hoping to be elected as your male 3rd year representative. I have attended and assisted with a variety of WAMSS events over the last year or so and am always keen to provide an extra set of hands whenever I can. Using my experience as a camp leader this year, I plan to continue to encourage the strong team spirit our year group shares and to continue the excellent work that Adarsh and Karen have put in this year. As the awkward and neglected middle child of the MD, our cohort has had to face a variety of unique hardships over the last year or so and as year representative I will be sure to communicate any problems or issues our cohort has to the appropriate persons effectively and efficiently. I am extremely well versed in confidently communicating my thoughts on improving the course, etc. to the faculty and hope to utilise my pragmatic and persistent attitude to great effect as your year representative. I am a friendly and easy to talk to person, so if you have any questions I am always willing to listen and help out in any way that I can!

THIRD YEAR REPRESENTATIVE FEMALE (3 NOMINATIONS)

RACHEL WHITEHORN (III) Hi everyone! I’m excited to nominate as one of your Third Year Representatives and would love the opportunity to continue the fantastic work done by our reps over the past two years. I feel my dedication and organisation would allow me to do this with confidence and efficiency. My previous involvement with WAMSS' Red Party and my role as UWASS Events Coordinator have given me the useful skills to tackle challenges and communicate effectively. I am passionate about medicine and allowing every student the opportunity to have their say and to feel comfortable in the course. As your representative I would ensure that I was approachable and available to each and every student, and be 100% dedicated to being an advocate for our year group.

ERIKA CHRISTIE (III) Hey guys, For those of you whom I have not met, my name is Erika and I am nominating for third year rep. I believe I have the qualities to fulfill this role; I am organised, hardworking and always thrive under a challenge. Being approachable and having a strong voice is an imperative part of representing the cohort’s wishes, and I know that I will be effective in this. I am always looking for ways to study smarter and this is one way in which I think we could all help each other. I am not going to RCS, but have lived in a rural town for most my life and understand the challenges involved, and as such I think this will make me a great representative for all those going rural next year. And as I will be in Perth, I would like to ensure those of us remaining don’t feel left behind. If you have any questions, please contact me anytime, I look forward to hearing your ideas and concerns. Erika

RUBY KIRUPANANTHER (III) Like the battery of a pen torch, I think this role requires three A’s: advocacy, approachability and “a” bit of experience. Advocacy: I hope to follow the great example of our year reps these past two years in replying promptly to, and seriously addressing all concerns. Next year we will continue to be spread across multiple hospitals/GP clinics. I would provide streamlined feedback (from our year group) to the relevant people/groups regarding issues such as placement/general academic issues, electives, … and pebblepad. Taking a page from the year above us, I would also like to set up a google doc feedback system for the end of each rotation, which would provide a coordinated and anonymous approach. Approachability: I think I’m pretty approachable/friendly and am always happy to have a chat. A bit of experience: I’ve had experience with handling mass emails and meetings, advocacy, communication between different groups and organising events through roles such as Dr YES/Teddy Bear Hospital Coordinator (2014/2016). I’ve been involved with various WAMSS subcommittees and would love to help further on committee. Lastly, being a second child myself (1994-present), I feel like I understand the issues of our year group on a personal level.

FOURTH YEAR REPRESENTATIVE MALE (2 NOMINATIONS)

ALEXANDER SHIVAREV (IV) Hey! I’m pretty keen to be running for 4th year rep. It’ll be the final year of our degree, and also the first year of graduating MDs at UWA. With this transition, there’s no doubt that issues will arise and that you will need support in one way or another. If you don’t need the support, you will likely participate in something that WAMSS has to offer and as the 4th year rep, I will make it my duty to ensure your expectations are met. Having been involved with WAMSS since first year and holding an executive position, I believe I am in a unique position to offer our 2017 graduating cohort the support that it needs.

Your year rep needs to be able to:

• Communicate student views to faculty and vice versa • Support students, particularly in applying for internship • Organise aspects including grad dinner, intern prep seminar, jumpers, yearbook

These are just a few of the roles of a year rep and I am completely willing to take them on board, and do my best in making sure that our final year together as students is a memorable and well-organised year.

HREHAN HAKEEM (IV) Wow! These last 3 years have gone fast. Can’t believe how much has happened.

Fourth year will be a challenging and exciting year for us all - A key issue being our final OSCE. As your male representative, I will be committed to advocating your needs and communicating your concerns to the Faculty. I will coordinate the different specialties to provide the revision opportunities you require. I will be proactive in fighting for the resources you need to thrive. Transparency is essential. I’ve seen how hard many of you work, the sacrifices you make. Likewise. I’ll put in the time and effort to make things work. Together, in 2017, I hope we can inspire one another to learn, grow and enjoy this process of medicine. It would be a privilege to serve you.

FOURTH YEAR REPRESENTATIVE FEMALE (UNCONTESTED)

STEPH COLLINS (IV) It is with delight that I nominate for the position of year representative for the fourth and final year of MD. We entered this course in 2014 with the excitement of being the premier MD’s of UWA, however learnt rather quickly that wearing this exclusive title carried significant pitfalls (ie. Pebble Pad). Without doubt our previous year reps have done a wonderful job at supporting us through those challenging times, and I wish to maintain that lead as we reach this milestone in our medical training. Our final year will be both exciting and terrifying, filled with celebrations and meltdowns, and with immense experience in both I feel confident in taking on this role. I have been involved in WAMSS in previous years through coordinating various projects under Interhealth. Next year, I hope to utilise such skills to ensure each and every one of us enjoys our final year. From OSCE prep and internship applications, to organising grad dinner and final year celebrations, I promise to ensure we will have the most memorable year yet.

EDUCATION OFFICER (3 NOMINATIONS)

SAM KHOR (IV) As a member of the first cohort of MDs, our degree has been filled with many invaluable learning experiences with some challenging moments. I am passionate about ensuring a strong final year educational framework that develops us into confident and competent doctors as well as refine the course to ensure all future MDs follow in our footsteps. I want to continue our strong relationship with the Faculty and act as an intermediary between students and staff. I feel student feedback is quintessential to developing a successful course, so I aim to provide a platform for our collective voice and will not to surrender to inadequate responses to our concerns. Similarly, I will ensure students are aware of Faculty decisions and understand their reasoning. I have extensive educational experience through SGR and undergraduate physiology tutoring. I have also held the responsibility of Red Party Treasurer for two years. I have lived through the positives and negatives of first, second and third years of the MD and can easily empathise with issues that may arise. We deserve the highest quality teaching and assessment, and I will push for early dissemination of OSCE/exam information, prompt marking of assessments and fairness through standardised assessments.

SHANNON MARANTELLI (IV) Hi everyone, I’m Shannon and I’ll be a 4th year in 2017. I’m hoping to make the change from getting you drunk at Red Party to getting you the best education possible. The Education Officer is a crucial role that acts as the link between WAMSS, the faculty and all medical students, and requires an individual with excellent communication skills who can foster the relationship we currently enjoy with the faculty. With the new Bachelor of Medical Science and subsequent entry into year 2 of the MD course, we need a strong voice to ensure that current students continue to receive a high quality education.

Page 15: WAMSS Committee Nomination Bulletin 2016 UPDATED DRAFTwamss.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/WAMSS-Committee-Nom… · hrehan hakeem (iv) 11 fourth year representative female (uncontested)

WAMSS General Committee Elections Nomination Bulletin 2016 | 14

My priorities for 2017 would be to: • Ensure transparency between the faculty and students about the course changes • Ensure that student concerns and feedback are conveyed to the faculty • Advocate for timely return of assessments, and aid students who wish to appeal assessments • Address the demands on MD students (Scholarly Activity, Pebblepad) and their impact on study and clinical commitments Being on the WAMSS committee this year has given me greater appreciation for all that is done behind the scenes on our behalf. It would be an honour if you gave me the opportunity to represent you in 2017.

AIDAN ALLEN-HALL (IV) With the first cohort of MD students graduating in 2017, there is much to be done to ensure the smooth sailing of all cohorts as they move through the degree. I am particularly keen to address workload issues, to ensure that all assessment mechanisms are fair and relevant, and to make sure that access to teaching is equitable for all students. I believe that workloads should be manageable, allowing you to focus primarily on clinical learning and to get the most out of your time at university and in the hospitals. My priorities as Education Officer will be to listen to year group feedback, working closely with year group representatives and the WAMSS Executive, to then present your views to the UWA Faculty. Moving into my final year, I will be well positioned to assist with matters relevant to all year groups. I look forward to the opportunity to represent you.

INTERNATIONAL OFFICER (UNCONTESTED)

ELLEN HUANG (IV) I am an international student from Thailand, currently in the 3rd year of MD. I have been living and studying in Australia for nearly 8 years, and have a clear understanding of the unique set of challenges international students face. I am committed to provide support, encourage engagement, and advocate for our welfare.

I possess the passion and relevant experiences for the role. I have been working as the Resident Advisor at University Hall for the past two years. I was on the subcommittee of Global Health Conference 2015 and WAMSS Elective and Exchange in 2016. In these roles I have demonstrated my dedication and developed transferable skills that make me a strong candidate for the role.

2017 is an exciting and challenging year as we expect the first batch of MD students graduating. Advocating for internship opportunities for final year international students is my utmost priority. Furthermore, I intend to continue:

• Preparing final year students for internship application;

• Promoting close interaction amongst all international students;

• Creating networking and professional development opportunities;

• Addressing any issues international students face.

If I may have the pleasure to have your support, I promise I’ll do my utmost to make your 2017 a success.

SOCIAL REPRESENTATIVES (2 NOMINATIONS)

JESS PERRING (II), GAVIN HUANGFU (II), BEC

CIVIL (IV) Hi! We are Bec, Jess and Gavin, we like to party, and it would be our pleasure to be your social representatives for 2017. We understand the need for some time-out from your busy schedules of work and study, and would be honoured to keep your social lives thriving as you head into your next year of medicine. Between the three of us we have a huge amount of experience in running and organizing events. We promise boundless enthusiasm and fun, and a commitment to detail that will make every event a night to remember! Jess: This year I’ve been involved with UWASS, Red Party and DrYES and would love to expand the diversity of the events we run, and introduce some new ideas into the calendar. Bec: After a relaxing RCS year in the Pilbara I am keen to jump back in and revitalize the WAMSS social calendar. With plenty of party-attending and party-organising experience I am ready to make our staple events even better than ever! Gav: As an ex-committee member of the ‘Korean Cultural Club’, I have ample experience communicating with UWA guild and organising social events. I am also on the promotions sub-committee for Red Party.

WILLIAM SCUTT (II), PHOEBE STRICKLAND (II), RHIANNA CLAY (II) We’re Will, Phoebe and Rhi and we hope to be your 2017 social reps. Here’s why we’d be great: We’re organised, motivated and willing to go the extra mile to make sure 2017 is not a year to be forgotten - no one knows how to work work work harder than our very own bad-gal-riri. We’ll continue the events we all know and love, but also want to diversify the events on offer. You can have some nights you can remember, or get white gurl. You do you. We’ll provide some more opportunities to mix with people from other years. We can guarantee you Gary Lau will be at every event. Our personal strengths: Phoebe has legit professional experience with event organisation and promotion around Perth. Yeah. She knows people. #followher Rhi has worked in events too, and is such an organisational kween Officeworks had to take out a restraining order. #highlighterfetish Will once went to the biggest party in his home-state Tassie – there were 12 people there and 3 were sheep. #familyreunion We know you’ll be busy getting down and nerdy next year so we want to make sure you also have a chance to get down and dirty.

ORIENTATION EVENTS REPRESENTATIVES (UNCONTESTED)

SIYANG ZHANG (II), ELLA GIUDICE (II) We are extremely excited to run as a team for the position of Orientation Events Representatives for 2017. Together, we believe our approachability, organisational skills, and commitment to nearly every WAMSS event this year give us the requisite knowledge and experience to warmly welcome new medical students. Our goals for this position are to: • Immerse first year students into the WAMSS community • Establish a camaraderie within the first year cohort We believe that an organised, well-promoted and well-executed Orientation Camp and subsequent social events are paramount in successfully achieving these goals. Through our participation in many events integral to WAMSS life including Pokémed Camp (2013), Med Camp Survivor/Survivour (2016), Tacovention, and NewGHC, we have experienced how amazing and exciting medicine can be. As such, we are enthusiastic to deliver the same inclusive, engaging and banter-filled orientation experience to the incoming cohort. Through Dr YES, we have already developed strong connections with incoming freshers and have experience welcoming new volunteers. Furthermore, involvement in the Red Party Subcommittee has given us event planning experience. It would be an honour for us to represent you as Orientation Events Representatives in welcoming the class of 2020 into the WAMSS community in 2017.

MEDICAL DINNER REPRESENTATIVES (UNCONTESTED)

VIVIEN HSU (IV), TEESH BORCOSKI (IV), CLAUDIA LESLIE (IV) What comes to mind when you see a blonde, a brunette and an Asian? Secret missions and crazy fighting skills in black tank tops and flare pants? We may not be Charlie’s Angels super spies but we’re three girls with super fly ideas and killer party experience (both attending and organising). Our team is made up of a heap of WAMSS and events experience: - 2 Allied Health Representatives (2016) - 3 Red Party Sub-committee members (2014-2015) - 1 Teddy Bear Hospital Coordinator (2015) - 1 Elective and Exchanges Officer (2016) - 1 CB4H Coordinator (2015) - 1 WASSIST Events Officer (2016) Being our final year and last ball, we’ve gathered enough intel to know what you want and we’ve got the experience, commitment and skills to put on a night you’ll never forget (no matter what BAC you achieve).

ALLIED HEALTH REPRESENTATIVES (UNCONTESTED)

NIKITHA BOYAPATI (II) Hi! I am Nikitha Boyapati and I am going to be heading into 2nd year MD in 2017. I would like to nominate myself for the role of Allied Health Representative in 2017. Allied Health is one of WAMSS’s biggest and most important events which attracts more than 2000 people each year. I believe I have the relevant skills and experience to fulfil this role. I have previously helped organise events for WATA and Red Party which required me to organise venues, catering, photographers, promotions, and marketing for these events. I am aware that in the recent years Allied Health has not been able to attract as many people as in previous years where the MBBS course was still in effect. One way I would try to increase the number of people coming to Allied is by increasing the reach of the promotions and marketing campaign of Allied Health among undergraduates in UWA as well as increasing the participation of students from all the other WA universities. This may be achieved by utilising marketing representatives at these universities and marketing Allied Health directly to these groups using Facebook, Student Guild newsletters/emails and other online/social media platforms.

BENJAMIN EDLAND (II), SARAH PEARCE (II), RENITA WHITTLE (II), JORDAN KOROL (II) Hello Everyone, We are hoping to be your sports reps for 2017, but before we tell you our vision, let us introduce ourselves. Sez – Career sporting highlight: an 11km run home from Jack Rabbit’s (claimed it was training for Hunt Cup) Ren – See Instagram profile #activehealthy Jords – Knows the consequences of his former alliance with PESA and is now fully committed to WAMSS (see election photo). We are so excited at the prospect of being your sports representatives. With such a large cohort of students, there is a great opportunity to be involved in numerous sports while mingling with your fellow medical students. With such a successful year in 2016 with a multitude of intervarsity and interfaculty victories, we will endeavour to live up to the expectation left by our predecessors. In addition to the usual sporting events, we will make the most of our diverse range of skills by promoting the WAMSS representation in events such as the City to Surf, Augusta Adventure Race and inaugural Tour de Fridge.

PUBLICATIONS REPRESENTATIVES (UNCONTESTED)

FRANCES RUBZEN (II), TAHLIA LEGGETT (II), MYURI GANGARAM (II) Hello, we are Frances, Tahlia and Myuri from MD1, and we have joined creative forces to run as Publications Representatives for 2017. We have diverse experience in publications, promotions, graphic design and social media. Frances was the Promotions Officer for Interhealth’s Global Health Short Course 2016. Her passion for graphic design has led her to do publicity work with various committees. During undergrad she was the Media Officer in the Multicultural Students Union. After contributing as a Red Aware subcommittee member, Tahlia is enthusiastic to further her experience in a committee position. Her previous publications experience includes working as a specialist editor for neuroscience articles and posting ironic instagram captions. Myuri has substantial experience in marketing, sponsorship and promotions. She was the Internal Promotions Officer for Red Party, and previously acted as Sponsorship Officer for Griffith University. These roles required extensive social media and online promotions. As part of the Communications Portfolio our goals include producing professionally designed publications, and increasing WAMSS’ social media presence. We aim to capture the many interests of medical students across all years, engaging them in WAMSS’ social, academic, sporting and charity events. We look forward to working with you, and meeting you all!

MARKETTING OFFICERS (UNCONTESTED)

JOLYN NG (III), TIFFANY TOO (III) We are Jolyn and Tiffany, currently in our second year of the program. We are pretty excited to be running for the positions of marketing officers. We have not been involved in WAMSS and reckon now would be a good time to start. We do believe that we possess the experiences required to perform the duties of a marketing officer. We are both fairly organised and work really well as a pair. Jolyn: • Liaising with Rotary Clubs in sourcing for funding for students to engage in overseas service learning trips. • Recruiting participants for annual medical trips to Nepal. • Contacting various healthcare organisations for donations of healthcare supplies including medications, disposable surgical kits and other medical supplies. • Committee member on healthcare conference in September 2016. Tiffany: • Women in Surgery 2016 Subcommittee primarily involved in recruiting sponsors. • Event organizer for SMA Soiree 2016 – involved with coordinating/planning/catering/logistics. • Imagine committee 2016/2017 – in charge of planning house visits, liaising with external organisations and events planning. • Committee member on healthcare conference in September 2016. Together, we plan to further develop the close relationship that WAMSS has with us medical students. Oh, we believe sourcing out perks for financially struggling medical students is also on the radar.

UNDERGRADUATE COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER (2 NOMINATIONS)

KINGSLEY FREARSON (III) I plan to communicate with undergraduates, in an official position.

CHARLIE LEFROY (II) Hi everyone, My name is Charlie, and as you can probably guess from the photo I’m from the country. Why do you need to know that? You don’t, it’s just “nice to know :)”. I’m excited to be applying for the position of Undergraduate Communications Officer for 2017. UCO plays an important role in educating undergrad students on what medicine entails, whilst also helping students find other like-minded peers through WAMSS events. With this in mind, I feel that I am the ideal candidate for the position. I have experience in running events through my work organising the WAMSS ‘Medscope’ presentations, as well as assisting in Rotary of Crawley’s ‘Climb For A Smile’ charity run. As UCO, I would aim to achieve the following goals: - Maintain a strong connection between WAMSS and WAMSS associate members - Ensure students are educated on the upcoming changes to the undergraduate medical course - Provide students with an insight into medicine as a career It will be important to have a passionate and hard-working UCO with the upcoming changes in the undergraduate coarse. If elected, I look forward to helping undergrad students while continuing the fantastic work past UCO’s have contributed.

LOOKOUT REPRESENTATIVES (2 NOMINATIONS)

NICOLE BURGER (III), CATHERINE CLARKE (III) We are Cathy and Nicole and next year we’ll be third year MD students. We are excited to be nominating for the role of Lookout Representatives in 2017. Our vision for next year is to actively promote Lookout events to all medical students so that it is easy and simple for any medical student to be involved. We have both been actively involved in WAMSS life. Nicole has a strong interest in global health, this year she was Co-Coordinator of Interhealth’s Crossing Borders groups as well as sitting on GHC’s Training New Trainers national subcommittee. Both roles have provided her with the skills to run events, liaise with formal organisations, as well as a love for volunteering. Cathy has been heavily involved in WAMSS sporting pursuits, participating in interfaculty sport, Hunt cup, Mother’s Day classic, inter-university AFL and touch rugby. We feel together we would be the perfect combination to take Lookout forwards. We aim to create a fun, inclusive atmosphere for any medical student interested in volunteering or attending Lookout events. We would also reinvent some events, creating more opportunities to expand the events profile. We want to create more exciting opportunities in which you can get involved.

GARY ZHANG (III), TIM HARDY (III) We are Gary and Tim, two second year MD students nominating for Lookout Representatives in 2017! As sports representatives this year, we have formed a strong and effective working relationship that is rivalled only by Han Solo and Chewbacca. Our charity work this year has included fundraising for the Motor Neuron Disease Association of WA through our Swim to Rottnest, and also for Ronald McDonald House Perth through the WA Medical Students’ Orchestra concert. Some of the other roles we have been involved with include Interhealth Events and Logistics Officer, Orientation Camp leaders, Treasurer of the WA Medical Students' Orchestra and Bachelor 2016 critics. We have been involved with Lookout in 2016 through the endorsement of the Fair Game charity at all sports events, being expert taste testers at the Pancake Day, and also in Relay for Life coming up. Our aim to provide more opportunities in a range of areas for students to participate and volunteer in. Also, we will endeavour to allow those who volunteer in Lookout events to receive formal recognition from the faculty (rhymes with DebbleDad) and university.

INDIGENOUS REPRESENTATIVES (2 NOMINATIONS)

NAOMI LLOYD (III) Being an Indigenous student at UWA and being a part of the MD course, as a future doctor I'd really like to be greater involved in the medical student body while also advocating for my Indigenous community. I believe a solid foundation is built in medical school and I'd like the opportunity to influence knowledge and attitudes towards the Indigenous community early on in the medical student journey. I plan to strengthen the relationships of the Indigenous medical students from all years by organising regular catch ups but also seek to build the knowledge of the MD year group by planning events which integrate the wider Indigenous community from all specialties whom can offer their wisdom to us.

EMMA-JANE HUNT (II) As one of the Aboriginal students currently in MD1 (2016) I am hoping to provide further access, knowledge and support to medical students on working with Aboriginal patients and supporting cultural competency.

CODE GREEN OFFICERS (UNCONTESTED) ALISON WILLS (II), MARNEY BON (II) Climate change is a global health concern and as future doctors, part of our job will include helping people and communities affected by global warming. Climate change greatly influences the social and environmental determinants of health, impacting weather, air and water quality, food supplies and shelter. While this sounds daunting, there are plenty of small changes we can make to reduce our impact. As Code Green officers for 2017 we would like to do the hard work for you and bring you practical tips to reduce your impact. We aim to do this by starting a Code Green blog to post vegetarian recipes, tips and tutorials to reduce environmental impact, links to environmental events in the community and reviews of environmentally friendly cafes. We would make it a priority to work with the faculty to make classes and events greener and more sustainable, including encouraging the use of reusable cups in LEAPS classes. About Ali: 2016 Administration Officer for Code Green, experienced event organiser and sponsor finder, Facebook post fiend, Keep-cup owner, flexitarian. About Marney: blog writer, office manager, volunteer hand masseuse, tea party organiser, sustainable thermos owner, vegetable obsessed flexitarian. Saving the world one vegetable at a time.

ACADEMIC EVENTS CO-ORDINATORS (4 NOMINATIONS)

CLEMENT LIM (II), CALVIN LO (II) Calvin and myself, Clement, would like to take up the Academic Events Coordinator position in WAMSS.

We believe that medical school should be fun and interesting, incorporating elements of practicality and applicability amidst the endless hours of studying from books and notes. From our experience so far as medical students, the greatest transition from our undergraduate years has definitely been the step up in content, as well as the introduction of the clinical aspect of medicine which many of us have no experience in beforehand.

If granted this opportunity, we plan to address these issues as academic events coordinators, allowing increased exposure to medical events and programs that supplement the curriculum throughout the semester, giving greater opportunities for practice in areas of clinical medicine as well as broaden the horizons of medical students in aspects pertaining to actual clinical practice. We hope to run these events in a lively and interactive manner that challenges the stereotype of clinical medicine being intimidating and/or mundane.

Having both been in the military, we have experience in planning and coordinating events and coupled with our keen interest in medicine, we believe we would be suitable candidates.

They say “2 C’s is better than 1

DAVAADORJ ERDENEBAYAR (II), EMILY TAN (II) !

We are Dav and Emily and we would like to be your Academic Events Co-ordinators for 2017! We want to bring you events that not only complement our curriculum but enhance our experience. There is only so much that can be taught in classrooms and we should take every opportunity to enrich our learning. Dav has a passion for innovative medical research, having completed a research internship at PAWSEY Supercomputing centre. He has been a member of multiple committees, involved in organising social, academic, and career events. Emily has been a volunteer at St John Ambulance since 2014 and is eager to bring her experience to organising the Emergency Medical Challenge. Like Dav, she is committed to bringing current, novel research to the fore and has experience liaising with professors and researchers after completing a project within the School of Medicine and Pharmacology in 2015. Our main goals are to: • Provide workshops that are clinically relevant and applicable • Present guest speakers in research and technology • Facilitate a smooth transition between the pre-clinical and clinical phase • Increase communication between student body and coordinators to tailor events. We would love the opportunity to organise the best academic events for you in 2017!

JESSIE CHANNELL (II), ALICE VELLA (II) Hi, we are Jessie and Alice and we’ll be 2nd year MDs in 2017. We’re excited to be nominating as a team for Academic Events Coordinators. We’ve decided to nominate as we feel the extra academic offers from WAMSS are important additions to the standard curriculum. We want to ensure its continuing success and growth for the benefit of us all! We plan to continue with current favourite events, such as the emergency medical challenge, mock OSCEs, preparation for practice workshops, clinical skills workshops, and we’re keen to add more events relevant to each year group. We’ve worked together before and know that we work well as a team, that’s why we know we’ll be great in this role. Added to this, Jessie has experience as the young professional leader of her previous employers’ 300 young professionals and has organised professional events for 200+ attendees. Alice is a super organised, google-calendar extraordinaire with previous experience in administration and as a wedding planner! As a team we have the motivation, determination and organisational skills to pull off an awesome year of interesting, thoughtful, and worthwhile events.

GAUTAM MURUGIAH (II) Hi! My name is Gautam, and I’m running for Academic Events Coordinator for 2017. I’ve been involved in teaching at UWA for just over a year now and I’ve found organising and delivering the sessions to be incredibly rewarding. I’m passionate about bringing new opportunities to learn through new ways as well as bringing new perspectives that might be outside the curriculum to students. In 2017, I’d like to ramp up the academic lectures for first years who are still exploring the different perspectives in Medicine, as well as looking at future career pathways. Also, in addition to the events that WAMSS traditionally runs, I’d like to develop tutorials and extra materials for pre-clinical students to supplement their learning as well as to create a resource that all students can refer to that either extend the core coursework material to clinical applications, or provide new insights from experts in the various disciplines. I’m passionate about making the most of the time we have in medical school to learn as much as we can. I hope you will give me the opportunity to be a part of making that happen!

STUDENT GRAND ROUNDS CO-ORDINATOR (2 NOMINATIONS)

PETER MALLAL (IV), OLIVER RIGHTON (III), CATHERINE JOLGHAZI (IV) As previous SGR, clinical skills and LEAPS tutors we each have extensive experience in leading peer-run medical education sessions. Our team features two final year students, meaning that we possess substantial amount of clinical experience and theoretical knowledge invaluable to this position. In addition, we bring to the table excellent organizational skills in managing the logistics associated with this large education portfolio. With the transition from MBBS to MD finalizing in 2017, we aim to: 1. Revise each year groups SGR tutorials to guarantee students learn the relevant information for their year. 2. Run new larger scale tutorials aimed at upskilling students of all year groups on topics such as ECG’s, x-rays, electrolyte abnormalities and blood gases. 3. Organise a wide array of OSCE preparation tutes for both the 2nd and 4th year students, as well as coordinating regular OSCE study groups. 4. AND MUCH MORE! As regular and enthusiastic members of WAMSS, we are approachable and always eager to consider areas for improvement. Each member of our team brings a unique and valuable skillset to our application, and with your votes, we aim to make SGR a one-stop peer-education shop for learning medicine and passing exams in 2017.

RICHARD GOODHEART (III), MELISSA SIMMONDS (IV), KRIS KAPPER (IV) We are Richard, Kris, and Mel and we’re putting our hands up for the role of Student Grand Round coordinators next year. Our major goal would be to combine and manage all the peer-run tutorials currently being organised independently under one WAMSS umbrella. Specifically, Richard is the current coordinator of the peer-led clinical skills tutorials for first year students (and will be for Sem 1 next year too), and Kris organises a variety of additional tutorials and lectures including the Clinical Buddy program for hospital orientation. Add to the mix Mel, who has successfully run her own tuition business for five years and been involved extensively with WAMSS since 2014, and we think we have all the necessary ingredients to run a smooth, effective and efficient operation of SGR tutorials and events in 2017. Main goals: • Manage clinical tutorials for first years, Clinical Buddy program, and SGRs under one umbrella • Potentially expand the role of 2nd year MDs (case presentations to 1st years which are relevant to their systems block) • Continue to provide SGRs which allow pre-clinical students to interact with the hospital environment and practice on real patients We’d love your vote for SGR reps 2017!
